Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

Boller engaged to Prejean...
I'm wondering if Boller didn't just panic and throw the ring in her general direction before their relationship really had time to develop...
Prejean ultimately decided that she wanted a man who would never complete a pass at or to another man...
Also, according to his bride to be, Boller will not be allowed any "good job" pats on the butt next year, which will finally give him a good excuse for not getting any...
Posted by: Chris in Hawaii | February 13, 2010 12:35 AM
Officials are also wondering whether the bride or groom is in the lead for the most questionable "game" tape...
Both Miss America head Donald Trump and Ravens' GM Ozzie Newsome feel comfortable in their decisions to let the bride and groom go stating, "It's obvious neither of them has broken the habit of making horrible decisions under pressure."
Their pre-nup agreement states that in the event of a separation between the two, all blame will be placed on Brian Billick...

Asked for comment on the Boller/Prejean news, Sun columnist Mike Preston said he believes Troy Smith would have been a better fit...
When first courting Prejean, Boller had to repeatedly assure her that his playing for the Rams was in no way a homosexual metaphor...
When asked "Why Prejean?" Boller said he loved her work in the sequel to the Paris Hilton video...

Thanks Pete, I laughed audibly at the Rick Pitino line. Keep up the good work and travel safe down to Sarasota.

From the pictures I've seen of her it looks to me like he won 2 big ones.

Good stuff Pete. I needed a good laugh this morning. Now I think I will go out and fight the 70 degree temperature here in Nazareth. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Have a great day.

The clincher for Ricky P. is that the New Jersey area has a lot of Italian restaurants willing to stay open late just for him. Comfy table tops too.
As for Boller, good for him.

Good column, but I must''ve missed the funny part...Care for more waffles, Brett?

The comment from Chris is too funny for words. Anyway, good luck to Kyle. He seems like a class guy and I wish him well.

I have heard otherwise about class on Boller... Showing up to volunteer at a homeless shelter in his Bentley, being creamed at Preakness betting $100 on every horse in the Stakes, using his linemen to protect him stealing women from guys at bars...
He was a clown...

News Item:
The major networks gleefully showed replay after replay of the Luge wreck on TV and the web. You can access the video in three different spots on the ABC and CBS article page.
My Take:
Very classy showing a human fly through the air like a rag doll at 90 mph and die instantly hitting a pole.

Speaking of those who troll for attention, ESPN has another Washburn/O's rumor about nothing:
The Orioles are reportedly interested in free agent lefty Jarrod Washburn, as we've discussed earlier in the week, but is the veteran a fit in Baltimore?
The O's are building a solid, young roster, with a few key veterans mixed in to both make them competitive in 2010 and assist the younger players in their development. But considering Kevin Millwood's presence in the rotation, Washburn's services may redundant, since he's not likely to come in and put up ace numbers.
The club has as many capable, young starting pitchers as any in the league, including right-hander Chris Tillman and former first-round pick Brian Matusz, who may break camp with the club, as well as Brandon Erbe, Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton, all of whom could be in the big leagues within a year or so.
Blocking their path with a veteran such as Washburn might only make sense if the Orioles figured they were in the thick of the race in American League East and needed the security and reliability of a veteran.
Washburn turned down the Twins and has said publicly that he'd like to return to Seattle, but no confirmed offer has been made to date.

Peter,
I'm disappointed in the Baltimore Sports Investigative Reporters who have failed to ask the tough questions to Andy MacPhail about the Bergesen TV commercial. Given the performance risk, the GM must have approved of the ad beforehand. It's nice to have a Guthrie arbitration agreement and spring training to distract the fans from the poor decision-making process involved in the Bergesen injury. What if it had been season- or career-ending? I've been a MacPhail supporter until now, but someone should take accountability and ultimately it must be the GM in this case.
Posted by: Boomer | February 13, 2010 1:32 PM
Boomer, I 2nd that! You would think the Sun reporters have less to do while it's between seasons. Why would they just let this story slide without their being accountability? Could it be true that the Orioles are that intimidating towards the media?
Posted by: doug | February 13, 2010 2:27 PM
Boomer,
The idea of holding MacPhail responsible for the Bergesen injury is off base. The team hires out the commercial to a production company. The production company wouldn't be even be chosen by the GM, but by someone in marketing most likely. (If you ran a supermarket, you don't have the store manager doing the butcher's work...) That production company then assigns a director to the shoot and ultimately, the director is responsible for the talent's (in this case Bergesen's) actions. Saying that MacPhail should be responsible makes it sound like he should be babying all his players.
He's not a one man Secret Service. He can't be with every guy on the 40 man roster all the time.
Posted by: Chris in Hawaii | February 13, 2010 2:36 PM
Hey, Petey. Do me a favor when you get to Sarasota and see if Bergesen has been assigned to the "Hayden Penn Room". Just sayin'.......

FUNNY MACPHAIL QUOTES
"I think we're in a better position to compete on a game-by-game basis in our division," MacPhail said this winter. "Obviously, it's really tough, but you don't make excuses about that. ... You cherish the opportunity to compete there. We need to get better against the better clubs in our division. Look at what our record was against everybody else, and it was .500 or better.
One little problem there andy, the os werent .500 against the rest of mlb, but were 40 -50 (and an anemic 24-48 vs al east .333 winning pct)
I dont think Millwood, a .226 hitting 1b and a 38 year old SS playing out of position are going to put us over the hump either. That macphail has got a sense of humor though.Ill give him that
Posted by: macfail math | February 13, 2010 5:36 PM
"We need to get better against the better clubs in our division."
Um, that would be every other team in the division.
Posted by: Garry | February 13, 2010 7:46 PM
Ok,
I see Pete's in mid-season form in predictions, Terps over Duke???????
And since predictions are the order of the day I want to say for the record, that Atkins and Tejada combined numbers will be no better than Mora and Huff if as good!
Also with the development of the youngsters the O's will approve a whopping 5-9 games for the season. In fact with just two decent bats that AM told us he was going to buy, we might have seen 1 17-24 game swing and given our youngsters a fighting chance with some good bats to surround our developing players!
Now Bergy's hurt and were gonna have to rely on Matusz to carry the load along with an over the hill Millwood and a bunch of unaccomplished throwers!
It's quite a plan you have Mr. McPhail!
The truth will set you Free!

Nobody should bring up the fact that the Rays went from 66(2007) wins to 96(2008) wins the yr they went to the WS. Worst to first, a 30 game improvement
Winning takes time. Ignore that 30 game jump in wins from tampa or else u might be disappointed this season with that whopping 5 - 10 game improvement expected from the o;s
In other news, The Os are the only team in MLB to have decreasing win totals since 2006. 70,69,68,64
Things are looking up tho...if u say it enough it might take away whats actually happened
ANother winter of missed opportunities. Oh yeah, there was no one worth signing....keep forgetting that
Posted by: Its really about 2014 anyway!!! | February 13, 2010 9:05 PM
The thing that the doom and gloom crowd doesn't get is that it isn't about 2010, 2014, 2018 or any other single year. It's about restoring respect and dignity to a franchise that was once a shining star among MLB teams. You don't do that by producing a single good year, you do that by creating an organization that will maintain stability for the long haul.
It starts from the ground up. It starts in scouting, both nationally and internationally. Joe Jordan seems to be the solution to the national side and while the international side is still lacking, moves the team is making, such as their recent commitment to become re-established in Venezuela, are steps in the right direction. You can't build a house without a solid foundation and the same goes for baseball franchises. Go ahead and call me a MacPhailer, call me what you will, but the fact is, I don't care what you think.
Cynicism is easy. You throw down insults and negative predictions and if the team struggles, you get to say "I told you so" to puff yourself up. If the team achieves something positive, you have the satisfaction of your team succeeding. A wager on the negative is empty. You put nothing on the line. It takes no risks. It takes no guts. It takes no heart.
So steel yourself up for the oncoming season. Suppress whatever joy you once found in the game. Yell insults at those who walk into opening day with a positive outlook. Barricade yourself up behind your wall of negativity. Because you know, I know, we all know, you don't have what it takes to lay your heart down on the line.
Posted by: Chris in Hawaii | February 13, 2010 10:06 PM
Why on earth do you think this team is set up for "long term stability" unless by long term stability you mean long term losing. If ignorance were nickels, youd be a millionare
You vaguely speak of scouting and intl scouting and then neglect to mention that we are woefully behind in intl scouting. and our scouting has produced the losingest decade in the history of the franchise. SPorts is a result oriented industry. Anything short of favorable results is nothing more than a big shiny slippery turd
Just this past winter, Sano a SS a position of need signed with MN. and Chapman the most highly regarded of the intl pitchers went to CIN. Hows that for international scouting? All of the scouting in the world wont help if the resrources arent put in behind it. Our fearless owner was just quoted about how we cant compete with the big boys inb the division. Whats the objective then ? Figured it ouy yet ? DIdnt think so
Bos for instance has DOUBLE the scouting budget as us. I know you only like the happy talk. and anyone who defends this travesty is culpable
Scouting, and what are you hanging your hat on about our scouting? The fact that we wasted a top 5 pick on a Pitcher whom anyone with a shred of honesty will admit was made for financial considerations . I shudder to think how badly we treat the 3rd overall pick this yr
An organization that produces lame, oft injured pitchers and no positional depth to speak of whatsoever is what u call good scouting ? All of the apologists are busy penciling in Josh Bell, but the streets are paved with AA all stars who never sniffed the big leagues.
I know i know, macfailers love throwing around unquantifable bs like "scouting" because you think it cant be measured. Well it is, the results on the field. The glorious scouting dept u speak of has decreasing wins 4 seasons in a row.
So next time u flap your gums with some long winded lecture devoid of tangible content , you should at least have a clue at how deficient we are in areas you pretend that we are thriving in. yeah youre right you are lame, kool aid drinking apologist worthy of contempt.
If you had any competitive heart whatsoever, the charade thats going on at the warehouse would offend you. Instead, you carry its water just like a good little puppet
So why dont you pop in a movie, like all of the other kids who werent good enough to play sports. After all, no thought or effort goes into that, so it should be right up your alley

People who are morbidly obese are more likely to be depressed. They may find themselves feeling unattractive in a society that values thinness. New York University's program for surgical weight loss cites a 1999 study showing that 80 percent of morbidly obese persons felt shunned and discriminated against. They stated that potential employers had discriminated against them in hiring practices, and that doctors had treated them unfairly.
As a result, they retreat into online chat rooms where they frequently engage in online hostility towards those they feel have discriminated against them in society. They usually attack people they perceive as superior whom they blame for their unsatisfactory predicament. Often times they act out fantasies and engage in behavior in which the patient creates illusions of multiple people acting in agreement , thus allowing them to feel as part of a group rather than rejected by a group. They often target one or two persons as the recipients of their attacks
They frequently become addicted to this behavior as a means of avoiding isolation. Often times, they are permanently removed from the group when their deficient social skills lead to arguments, insults and prolonged, never ending rebuttals.
Their inappropriate behavior sometimes referred to as sociopathic e-stalking has just recently been categorized in the DSM for psychological disorders thereby, exacerbating and exposing yet another area in which they are clinically maladjusted
Sadly, there are no medicinal remedies for this troubling new phenomenon

Jason-
Make sure to check the Baltimore Sun Union manual about the time you spent on here today. Are you collecting a paycheck or something? The paper is struggling and probably doesn't want to pay you all that OT.
I like how someone puts you in your place, then you change the subject, call people names, talk as other people, etc. Way to go cool guy.
You seem hung up on the cuban thing, every year there are a few big cubans out there that make noise. Please tell me the last top notch cuban to win a cy young in the past 20 years? How about research the most successful Cuban Pitched seasons in the last 20 years and for a thesis around why they are worth the risk of blowing loads of cash on.
So feel free to discuss, call me a name or say STFU! LOL LMFAO! like the 13 year old girl you are, or even better, create a stream of conversation using other peoples names and other witty cynical names. Trust me, people are noticing. Jim Rome wants to groom you to be the next him. Mike and Mike are going to have you on to be a guest host. Whatever you do, try to get a shower today, some sunlight and have human interaction.
Maybe I'll check in later tonight. I must say I am mildly interested in how many posts the dork on the baseball blog sends to him self all day.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
