MacPhail: View from the top

Stopped by Andy MacPhail's office today on the second floor of the clubhouse complex and got a look at the facility from the catbird seat. The Orioles and the Sarasota County crew have done a great job of manicuring the practice fields, and MacPhail has a panoramic view of all them. He's also got a large balcony with nice patio chairs, which would make a great auxiliary press box.

Of course, the Ed Smith Stadium complex is going to be a work in progress for quite some time. The clubhouse building has been repainted in an Orioles motif, which gives it a newer look. There's also work going on inside the stadium, but much of it is short-term sprucing up. The major renovation work probably will start when the O's head north for the regular season.

Shouldn't that read View From The Bottom....

I feel like things are really positioning themselves for a real full throttle launch for the Orioles next generation in 2011. If the management is smart they will have Ed Smith ready to be a jewel Spring complex by 2011, which by then we might be talking about more established young players primed for continuation of a great young career. I think of this season as the season for young guys (pitchers) to step up and surprise people. That needs to happen for the young Orioles to have any chance.

Pete
Your thoughts on 1st Base?? Appears bloggers, media et al have given 1st to Atkins, suggesting Wigginton is trade candidate. Yet in '09 a down year for each, Ty was better & in '08 a good year for ea Ty was better (2 more HR's in 300 less AB's). Not a big fan of Ty but can't see the Atkins hype??

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: There shouldn't be any Atkins hype until he shows he can turn around his declining numbers, but he's going to be the Opening Day first baseman.

Pete,

Any comments regarding Bergesen's shoulder?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I've written a few things, but it was just dumb luck. I guess, in retrospect, the team should have supervised that shoot better, but the kid isn't really a kid. He's got to know better than that.

It's been along time since i wrote anything on your blog. I guess between the end of football season and all the snow i haven't really thought about the orioles. I must say i am a little envious of your job and where you be spending the next 6 or so weeks. Even though my feelings for andy's plan hasn't changed that much i have to say just thinking about baseball makes the winter some what bearable. Enjoy your time down there and here''s hoping that i am completely wrong about the orioles. It certainly will make spring and summer much better around here.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Welcome back. We're just hoping for some interesting stories this spring.

Don I,

I hear what you are saying about handing the job to Atkins on the basis of his numbers last year, but Wiggington is simply awful defensively at first base, (he's only really bad at 3rd) so I just don't see the O's risking his defense with all the young pitchers. If September was at all for real, I'm still hoping an Aubrey platoon is possible as a stop gap until others are ready. That said, unless they find a sucker, I mean a team to take Wiggington, I don't know if there is a roster spot for Aubrey, especially given that he is a one position guy.

Michael Aubrey should be a strong contender for the first base job. He is an excellent fielder and should be given a shot to prove he can hit.

Glad to see AM has a vision and it all starts from the ground up!!!!

well done AM!!

were on our way

GO OS

In fact if Tejeda/Atkins combine for 50 hrs and 180RBIs i will predict right now that AM will get us into the playoffs...

were rolling now!!

Go Os

Well..Wayne (nice name) i respond to filler posts as i always have....

I dont feel the need to change that now!

Wayne,

It's a real shame to see that someone is embarrassing the real wayne on this blog.

Pete, you have to admit - you miss wayne!

Doug...I can use my name as you do yourself!!!

why are you trying to start fights???

be happy as all Os fans should be brothers!

ps no one owns my name!

I agree with Wayne, Doug!

Are you trying to tell me you will only accept someone on here by the name by which it is posted?

Were all Oriole boosters...

dont worry be happy!

Thanks Kramer...hey Doug why cant i use my name on here?

If some other Loser wants to use it he can!! Thanks for making my first post awkward.

Wayne you must be upset as you spelled your name wrong lol

dont worry constant bickering is common place on here and there is a big heartache over a poster with your namesake that really isnt worth getting into!

I dont post much either as I get the same crap when i post which is very rare!

oh cute... someones pretending to be wayne...

Shamrock read his post (if you are able)

he says he is a new poster!

but than again logic and you breath different air!

So i guess the only way to have a conversation on here is to be little someone???

Ill tell my mom you dont approve of the name she picked out for me!

does anyone talk about baseball on here?

Hopefully the stadium will be finished by 2011.

You have two groups in Sarasota right now trying to get the County to scuttle the deal completely which has delayed the release of the bonds needed to start construction.

Pete,

You have to do something about this. I read your blog all the time, used to love reading the comments, but this is becoming absolutely pathetic. What was once my favorite internet destination has become a complete waste of time. The inmates are definitely running the asylum, and they are running it into the ground.

Wayne,

We still have your six! Face it, tomorrow marks the beginning of the end! We'll be 15 back by the end of June! Where were we on Chin Ming Wang, $2Million, well worth the chance versus the 36 year old Japanese reliever we signed last year for $5M a year! Yeah, I know, we have a plan!

The truth will set you free!

Pete - there is obviously something missing in the current make up of this years Oriole's roster.

What is missing is mature leadership. The Orioles need to spend money on one or more of the respected unsigned veterans with a winning track record to provide leadership for their young talent. Adam Jones , for example, definitely needs mature leadership from an experienced teammate to help him grow into the potential he possess.

A team with so many young players need guidance like a Johnny Damon for example. Signing Damon for one year to help provide the necessary needed leadership would help the young talent to mature quicker which will help the Orioles to become a better team faster.

Pete - what is your opinion?

Michael Aubrey is a singles hitting minor league journeyman!

andy macfail--- engineering for a 4th place finish since 2007!!!

FIRE MACPHAIL!!!

To the other Wayne -

There is only room for one of us on this blog, my friend. And as you can see, my reputation precedes me. If I were you, I would legally change your name in real life, as AP has hired hitmen to kill me for my dissent of "The Plan."

The Orioles suck!! I'm going to change my allegiance, I'm sick of always crying about losers everyday. I'm spitting in your face for good Angelos!!Go Yankees!

To the other Wayne

Congratulations on being someone everyone despises but im here to talk about baseball not switching teams!!

Keith Rowe: We have the young arms coming up and despite what is constantly said about us (mostly by our own fans) you have to give it time!

The devil rays found away to compete (whether by losing all those years) and so will we

I believe the places are in place to take a step up!

Pete:

You got to save your "little buddy" Roch. He says he's staying on FRUITville Road and seems to be lost and looking for a "friend". I hope you take him under your flowered shirt and keep him away from others on FRUITville Rd.

JO

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm pretty sure Roch can take care of himself.

Keith-

You would find a way to complain about the capture of Osama Bin Laden.

You don't like anything the O's have done this season (Atkins sucks, Tejada, yada yada), yet you want them to bring in a broken down pitcher who had a 9 something ERA last season and will not be ready until June, if at all. He's a head case.

The truth may set you free, but logic will make you happier and live longer.

You are the new Wayne (now that there are 5 of them apprently). Pick up your crown of thorns at the Sun Printing plant.

Wow,

All I said was one little thing about the real wayne, and look what happened. Lighten up new Wayne. It's just that the original wayne is missed, especially by Pete, and I suppose I hit a nerve with some people.

The real wayne was funny and told the truth about the Orioles. Yes, I'll admit it, I was a fan

Sarasota is acting like $31M is real money.

The owner bearing gifts has leverage in Sarasota -- a momentary smile from the owner has not yet been confirmed.

Sarah Palin can see 74 wins from the catbird seat.

Who is Ed Smith?

Question for you, Peter. Why haven't the O's made a run at signing Jermaine Dye? Seems to me he would be a good DH against lefties (whom Luke can't seem to hit) and otherwise a power right-handed bat off the bench. He should be affordable, too.

Jim

Jim

The problem is that with the short benches of today, it's hard to find room for someone who is a platoon DH/bat off the bench. I agree Dye would help in those situations but I don't see how he filts on a four man bench

The article about the new facility this morning is an insane indictment of the O's over the last 15 years.

They're excited because: (1) the minor league facility is no longer four hours! away from the major league facility; (2) the starters will no longer have to travle 90 minutes for a road game; (3) other teams refused to allow their players to play on the field at the major league facility so having a facility up to that modest standard is an upgrade; and (4) other teams refused to allow their players to play at the minor league facility (wow!).

They are excited that, in 2010, they are briniging their facilities into the 90s. It's pure insanity. I'm optimistic that the new vacility will be nice, but wow, what incompetence. No wonder they've been so awful for so long.... No wonder I won't give them my money any more....
