Digging out like everybody else

Good news. I just found my car. I'd been searching for it for a couple of days after the big storm and finally located it right in front of the house. Now -- thanks to a couple of charitable neighbors (Chip and Kathleen) who helped me dig it out -- I no longer have an excuse for lying around the house wondering what Jim Caldwell was thinking when he sent Matt Stover out to try that 51-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter last night.

No disrespect to Matt, who is a prince and one of the greatest kickers ever, but that wasn't the kind of percentage play you make when you're ahead in the Super Bowl in the fourth quarter and you're supposed to be the better team. The miss gave the Saints the ball back on the Saints' 41-yard line, and they marched in to score the touchdown and two-point conversion to build a seven-point cushion.

Radio, radio That will be one of the subjects up for Super Bowl debate when you join me at six for Sportsline on WBAL and WBAL.com. Hey, I'm not asking. You better be there because I'll be taking roll.

Pete -

You shouldn't have posted anything else about the snow. You're about to get another "Filler post!" comment from wayne.

Peter,

you hearing anything out of the warehouse about the O's shopping Wiggy? Saw a small blurb about it on ESPNinsider. Kinda the forgotten man, and certainly not what he was expecting when he signed a two year deal.

yeah, I'm trying to avoid wayne, too. I feel like Swiss cheese with all the shots I've taken on the other blog.

Pete, do you see the Ravens still having interest in Stover heading into next season? I would think the market for 42 year old kickers is pretty slim.

Pete,

I think we all winced when Stover lined up that kick. I was rooting for Stover and against the Irsays so it was kind of mixed feelings. Just watching the Colts lose made my weekend. And seeing Peyton Manning try to force one in was great!! If Johnny Unitas had played half his games in a 70 degree controlled environment along with the P**sy pass defense rules {one hand check above the waist on a receiver only within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage} his statistics would also have been off the chart.

Now that football season is over we are into the void, as George will said in his book.

Gil,

Unlike today's quarterbacks, Mr. Unitas would have balked at wearing a dress.

Hey Pete,
I have an odd question. During the endless pregame coverage, there was some discussion regarding a potential NFL lockout/strike in 2011. I also know there has been talk of an NBA labor mess. Do you think that somewhere in the back of his mind, Bud Selig is kind of hoping they both go thru some labor strfe to focus more people on baseball? And maybe by being the "only professional game in town" it might help baseball move past the steriod mess in the eye of the public?
Love the blog and good luck with digging out.

10 days to camp!!

Of course it's 'filler' nb, but like I've said, it's not Pete's fault. He cover the Orioles, thus expectations are very low. At least it was a newer subject, although it would have been interesting to see evidence of his covered car (before and after perhaps.

And ken, I took shots at you? You're kidding, right?

Pete, it gave the Saints the ball on their own (the Saints) 41, not on the Colts 41. Heck, that would have made it a 69 yard attempt

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Sorry, my bad.

something is happening here
but you don't know what it is,
do you Mr. Jones?

I wonder when people are going to start demanding results ?

I don't know, wayne. I got called a liar and uninformed, told I was ridiculous and you yourself impugned my credibility all because I dared go against the grain and agree with what MacPhail is doing and not agreeing with everyone else on that particular blog that Mac is an incompetent oaf.

It gets tiresome and frankly, no longer worth my time. I believe that in the long run, the Orioles will be very successful and the majority, but not all, of their young players will become good to great major league players. But, I am in the minority in that opinion and I just no longer feel like bucking the system.

I will continue to read Pete's blog, but I can no longer see myself contributing.

You win, wayne.

You got called a liar because you said macfail was "handcuffed" by the tribunce company which is a flat out untruth. It didnt happen that way and you know it

Then you came up with some ludicrous theory about how the central was weak when the Cubs won the division without macfail, but it was strong when he was losing all over the place

You should just hope people forget you posted such hogwash instead of playing the victim and bringing it up again

A tall pine tree landed about 10 feet away from my truck. Then the snow plower plowed 10 feet of snow in front of it. Asshole. Now I have to drive my refurbished '93 Eclipse through this crap, oh, and with low profile tires. Hopefully we get a warm front soon or my truck is going to be sitting there for a while.

But I guess I gotta look on the bright side, at least I have two cars. It just sucks that it took me 15 minutes to drive 2 miles out of my nieborhood.

Call me lazy, but I don't feel like digging my truck out of 10 feet of snow, slush and ice. I only made a path to the door so I can start it up every once in a while.

Pete,

do you and your colleagues from The Sun sit back and laugh at the flame wars on this blog? I just find it funny how thin skinned some people are...

Go against the grain ?

Yeah right, you fabricated a bunch of outlandish (and untrue)excuses for macfails epic failure while in charge in chitown

then for some bizarre reason, you said records dont matter anyway

Very hard to take seriously

It kind of reminded me of the guy on intervention tonight who is convinced that the king of nigeria will be coming to his house to pay him his sweepstake winnings

Poor you

You've stolen our winter! Here am I, stuck in Canada, with no snow to speak of. Okay, the other day I did get a bit on the bottom of my slippers when I stepped out to get the newspaper. And once it was so cold I had to zip my windbreaker halfway up...

ken,

That's too bad! Not sure how I win however, as I never called you a liar and such. Maybe I was sarcastic from time to time, but it was far less than how you came at me at times...... And I'm the reason? hmmm!

I just don't get it ken! Not only is AM's record so poor over the past 16 years, people are giving him credit for guys like bergy, reimold, weiters, markakis, johnson and more. Yes, he was successful for bringing in Jones, but who else in the starting lineup? Wiggy? Millwood, Scott?

I also don't buy into the hype on Bell, Snyder and Arrieta. Those 'names' look very average to me.

Combine it all with the fact that AM has zero history (anywhere) of bringing in quality FA's..... well, my worry certainly seems more than justified.

I've become one of the nicer blogers ken. Some of the stuff i've been reading makes me look mellow. Go figure!

Stover had it, distance-wise. The Saints kicker could hit one from 70 or so.

It was nice to watch a game and not care about the outcome. Couldn't hate either team.

Your car is about to disappear again, Pete.

can you,

He was handcuffed. Kenney meddled and some things he wanted to do were not allowed.

As it was, he did bring many good players to the Cubs, and built the 2003 playoff team. The next year, Prior and Wood disappear, and with them the Cubs chances.

Sorry guys, the Cubs are a special case and to say MacPhail was horrible while running a team that hasn't won a thing for a hundred years is beyond me.

I will say this, though. I grew up on the Chicago's northside and spent many a fruitless afternoon at Wrigley. But I haven't been there in years, though I still love the Cubs. Most of what I know is from friends and associates I still know in the Windy City. I have sent out a few e-mails to find out exactly what happened out there. If I'm wrong, I will admit it. I willlet you know when I get a response.

Fair enough?

Pathetic Fan-

I think if he kicked it straight it would have come up short. Kicking the snot out of it pushed it left but got it there.

If the Ravens bring Stover back, they need to find a moose like the Cowboys have doing kickoffs. That guy has multiple assault charges pending by Wilson, the maker of NFL gameballs.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
