Time to take the plunge

I'm headed over to Sandy Point State Park to take part in the 14th Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Maryland, and this might be the coldest one yet.

No problem. I have a special fat layer that protects me from the icy water and makes me attractive to certain species of seals. I just hope Captain Ahab isn't out sportfishing today.

If you're not going to be there, you can go to WBAL.com and click on the Plunge icon to contribute to the "Week in Review" team.

More pluggery: My Saturday "News item" column is up on the Web site. Check it out right here and tell me what you think.

going back to a seinfeld episode i have one word for you pete..."shrinkage"
may the schmuck be with you!

Good on ya, Pete! :)

Manatees don't survive in cold water, Pete? Haven't you heard the news out of Florida lately?

Seriously, good luck.and thanks for supporting such a great cause!

George: Well, I just got back from swimming in the pool. And the water was cold...
Jerry: Oh...you mean shrinkage.
George: Yes! Significant shrinkage!
Jerry: So you feel you were short changed...

News item: Former Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson has been hired by the Oakland Raiders to be head coach Tom Cable's offensive coordinator.

Pete's take: It's fair to wonder why anyone would want to join the dysfunctional Raiders organization, but Cable's situation is so tenuous that Jackson's got a puncher's chance of opening next season as head coach.

My take: Being ousted from Oakland is not a big deal. However, Jackson is there because Davis is still a believer in JaMarcus Russell. And to quote from "Christine": You can't polish a ...

Related news item: The Ravens have hired former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees to be the new linebackers coach, replacing the departed Vic Fangio.

My take: Perhaps another defensive coordinator has been placed on notice.

News item: The Orioles brought back Miguel Tejada this week, signing him to a one-year, $6 million contract to replace Melvin Mora at third base.

My take: sigh

News item: The 14th annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge takes place on Saturday at Sandy Point State Park. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics Maryland.

Pete's take: This may sound like blackmail, but if you make a donation, I promise I won't take my shirt off when I dive into the icy Chesapeake.

My take: I'm donated out but congrats on doing this for a good cause.

News item: New Hall of Famer Andre Dawson will be displayed on his plaque at Cooperstown wearing a Montreal Expos cap.

My take: I heard Dawson wanted to go in as a Cub. If true, it's a shame he couldn't choose because baseball powers got in a snit over Wade Boggs going in as a Devil Ray.

News item: Turns out, Roberto Alomar will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer after all.

Pete's take: It'll be the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, but it should be a nice warm-up for his likely induction at Cooperstown in 2011.

My take: "... should be ..." is right.

News item: The Oakland A's signed pitcher Ben Sheets, who missed all of last season after elbow surgery, to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $10 million plus incentives.

Pete's take: That's quite a gamble for the revenue-challenged A's, but that's why Billy Beane is one of the most dynamic GMs in baseball.

My take: Dynamic? Yes. Gamble? Bigger yes.

News item: The NBA has fined Labron James $25,000 for kicking a water bottle during Wednesday night's 109-95 victory over the Timberwolves.

My take: With every game so important, the NBA should really consider lengthening their season.

News item: President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer that he'll be rooting for the New Orleans Saints in next week's Super Bowl.

My take: Given the State of Obama over the past year, I'd say my prediction of Indy 34 Saints 16 is practically in the bag.

A good buddy of mine is taking the plunge today as well.
My best to both of you, good on you all for benefiting a good cause.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
