Ravens: You can breathe now

This game has never been close, but the Ravens have had so much trouble finishing in big games against elite teams, that Willis McGahee's touchdown with 10:32 left in the fourth quarter had to evoke a huge sigh of relief for Ravens fans watching here and at home.

Whats with NFL's idiotic challenge rule? I can understand limiting to two UNSUCCESSFUL challenges per half or game but WHY does successful challenges count AGAINST you?

So if you got a bonehead officiating crew that makes three critical mistakes against you, you can fix two of them but the 3rd one you are stuck with (except in the last 2 minutes of each half).

Makes you wonder who the stupid person was to come up with this?

Ain't the beer cold!!!

Stat of the day: Flacco had one more yard passing (34) than the Ravens had points (33). To the so-called experts who say you have to throw the ball to succeed in today's NFL, I saw thpthpthpthpthpthpthpth.

Tim, don't you mean "Go to war Miss Agnes!"

Gary, glad we are on the same page!

Seeing how the Ravens missed the chance to overrule the fumbled punt can anyone explain why the Ravens do not have at least one person watching the CBS telecast? If Phil Simms sees a problem with a call perhaps he is correct. And since this was the first half and the Ravens were sitting on a 24 point lead there is no reason NOT to challenge the call.

In fact that is my biggest complaint against the Ravens coaching staff. There was no reason NOT to challenge the fumble recovery. They were in the position to burn both timeouts and challenges and this could have been a terrible swing in the game for the Ravens.

Pete's reply: Agreed. It looked like an obvious challenge from up in the press box, where we also get the network feed and replays.

Finally! Ravens follow the formula that can get them through the playoffs--although 10/16 for 175 yards and a touchdown would be better.

Anyway, this game illustrates the fact that if the Ravens had gone this route all year, they would be more like 11-5 and not 9-7 for the regular season.

Next year? Flacco will have recovered, but they should still go ground.

The Ravens are a ground-based team, its in their DNA, all the way back to their previous incarnation in Cleveland with Jim Brown; then Ernest Byner, Jamal Lewis, and now Ray Rice.

Gary, Chuck Thompson also said "Ain't the beer cold?!" years ago.

Today's game reminded me of the 2001 playoffs..

congrats on a good season ravens.
Now get ready to go home.
Peyton is gonna light it up next week.

Bill Schmedrick also said we would lose to the Patriots...I think he has man love for Peyton Manning!

I agree Wayne...the Clots are going down on Saturday!

Pete, stick to following the O's.

Pete's reply: Did something big happen in Birdland today? Did I miss something important?

you have an affinity for being wrong don't you Wayne?.....good luck looking for that comment by me saying the Ravens would lose to the Patriots....I didn't comment on it....
like most of your "ideas" just made up as you go even if you have to .......let's see....what is that you always accuse AM of doing.....oh yeah

Pete's reply: Did something big happen in Birdland today? Did I miss something important?

No, not really.

Over the weekend, Dave Johnson, one-time Oriole pitcher and I do mean one time, said he never looked nor cared who was on-deck when he was pitching. Poor Phil Wood was rendered speechless. He probably had 20 Walter Johnson and Jim Palmer quotes ready to roll out but he didn't want to show up The Expert.

Hoo-boy, laughed so hard, thought my pants would never dry.

But as I said, nothing important.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
