Clearing out

Spent a big chunk of the day over at The Castle, where the Ravens were cleaning out their lockers and heading home for the offseason. Most of the players had something to say on the way out the door, and you can check out the Web site for all the stories and blog entries that Jamison Hensley, Ken Murray and Ed Lee generated over the course of the day.

Sometime tonight, you can also get my take on the somewhat somber morning. I talked to Joe Flacco, Mark Clayton and Dominique Foxworth for my column, which will appear in tomorrow's print edition.

Everybody wants to know whether Derrick Mason and Ed Reed will be back for training camp in late July, but no firm answer was forthcoming from either player. Lardarius Webb was in locker room and said he'll be around the whole offseason rehabbing to get ready for 2010. But it was too early for anybody to feel much like talking about next year. There's obviously plenty of time for that.

Thanks to the Ravens!

Thanks for 18 weeks of competitive, meaningful games!

Thanks for another post season run!

Thanks for being honest and true to the fans of Baltimore!

Thanks for having the only major sports franchise in town to be proud of!

Thanks for understanding that Winning matters!

Thanks for the continued excellence!

Thanks for 'again and always' giving us something to truly look forward to, each and every season!

Thanks Ravens!

Too bad you didn't get to talk to Dan Dierdorf, Pete. Not that he'd be able to say much of anything that made sense, what with constantly having Peyton Manning's coque in his mouth and all.

I almost threw up when Manning slid to take a sack and Dierdorf kept going on about how it was a great play, treating Manning like he's a golden god. I started watching the game hating the Colts. I finished the game possibly hating Dierdorf even more.

PPl who complain about the Os arent negative, just perceptive

PPl who complain about the ravens are the negative ones

the ravens make mistakes, but there is no doubt that they are trying to win every yr

the o's only care about profits

its depressing, weve got another hopeless orioles season with NO CHANCE OF COMPETING. For shame

If only Andy was sincere instead of a con man:

"To give him (Trembley) every chance going forward and to win as many games as we can and show meaningful improvement in the standings, which I think we need to do starting in 2010, it's our job in the front office -- mine specifically and in particular -- to augment, to give him as much help as we possibly can going towards that goal."

"Now I think it's important that we show our fans some meaningful improvement in the standings." Andy MacPhail 10/03/09

Who are you talking to, jason?

There's only about 10 people here and we're all aware of your feelings on the topic.

So what's the point in posting it again and again?

Do you have a self imposed daily quota?

CHris,

Y do u care what I write or how often I write it or who im writing to ? R u the blog police ?

I dont worry about your goofy delusional posts about how great the team will be in 2079

I prefer facts to your comical conjecture

For instance:

O's are top 5 in PROFITS

Os are bottom 5 in PAYROLL & STANDINGS

AM's teams have finished in last place 50% of the time since 91

AM has had 6 winning and 12 losing seasons since 91

U keep telling us how great AM is, Ill tell u his record.

I may flatulate repeatedly tonight as well.

WOuld u like to keep track of that too ? I may do it again and again

Chris,

In ALL due respect, can you please leave blogs about the Ravens to people who understand, respect and appreciate winning?

Thanks!

Pete,
You should check out some of the posts around this time on the "Kouzman" posting.
Hopefully that's not what you want this blog to be. I know W sure ruined the good natured atmosphere that used to prevail on here.

jason,

a) Where do you get your info? As far as I've seen (in USA Today), the O's were #22 of 30 in payroll in 2009.

b) The fact that you're completely wrong about the payroll, also leads me to believe you're wrong about the profits.

Your rants fail to factor in that in 2007, the O's spent 56.36% of their revenues on payroll, which was 2nd highest only to the Yankees.

http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2009/01/another_way_to_look_at_mlb_pay_1.html

Since that time, the team has jettisoned a bunch of older, overpaid players and gone younger, so naturally, the percentage of payroll decreases any time you do that because guys like Wieters are getting paid league minimum. Are you telling me that you'd rather have someone like Varitek behind the plate because he costs more? Last off season, the O's gave big dollar extensions to both Roberts and Markakis. The same will most likely happen as our newer, younger guys start to get up there in years. Jones will probably get an extension soon. Eventually other guys are gonna hit their arbitration years and the payroll will increase again.

But don't let any facts get in the way of your pointless rants, jason...

Nice try bf,

You keep posting under different names and you're taking things to a different level.

I have never posted under a different name and I ask Pete to specifically verify such. if he did, he would find you out.

Just stop bf. You're being ridiculous and you're embarrassing yourself!

To stay on track on this Ravens blog, I am going to bring up the Baltimore Blast. I think Ed Hale is raping his bank to fund his soccer team and sticking it to 12 year old soccer fans all across the city. Hale should sell the team to someone who will bring in real talent, like Ronaldo, Ronaldino and Beckham.

What a joke. The truth will set you all free!!! Don't be slaves to the Civic Centererers!

Nice, SHAMROCK.

Funniest post since that one guy kept making Von Trier references.

Chris in Hawaii, Jason C. in Florida,

I think you are both right, and it depends on where you get your information, especially about profits, which is a swag guess by the media. I am trying hard to follow Pete's wishes by sticking to the subject and leaving personalities out. You both are very smart and when it comes to baseball knowledge and statistics have me beaten hands down.

Chris, you know that I lean more toward Jason's view of Angelos and Macphail but I respect your viewpoints. I like to read what both of you post when you are on subject, but I hate it when you go after each other, it is a waste of talent.

I'll give you both credit for one thing, you post under your own names all the time because your styles are recognizeable and inimitable.

I wasn't trying to be funny. I really do think Ed Hale's run of championships and winning teams is going to come to a streaking halt unless he spends $75mil on bringing those three guys to the US to play indoor soccer.

Hale- YOU AND THE CIVIC CENTERERRRERS BEEN WARNED (and not just by the FDIC)!!!!!!

Hey Gil,

I just don't really like how some people come in here and post this stuff, either a) skewing things to fit what they want their point to be or b) just plain putting out something as "fact" that is not true.

According to Forbes, the O's ranked number 17 in revenue for 2008 (they don't have 2009 numbers yet) and according to espn they ranked (again looking at 2008 numbers so they match up) number 21 in payroll.

I just don't see that as the huge money grab that some people are making it out to be.

To me, the way this team is going to improve, is by the young guys succeeding, thus increasing fan attendance, which will then effect payroll.

I don't even think the Ravens have been that open and honest about things... you never know exactly how much they have to spend, how long players are still under contract, what their cap number is, etc...

And they haven't exactly shown continued excellence. They have been as good as they have been bad outside of the super bowl.

(I am not hating on the Ravens, just showing the comparison is dumb. Although I think salary cap issues should be easier to understand as the various nuances of 15 yard Personal Foul penalties in the NFL. Even the announcers don't understand the rules anymore. But I digress...)

I think the other half of Wayne's schizophrenia/bipolar/mania personality is happy Wayne in which the Ravens can do no wrong.

Like the little cartoon devils over people's shoulders...

Sham,

Let's see if you can understand......

It's about 'meaningful' games! It's not about World Series or Super Bowls.... It's about having a shot.

The Ravens, throughout the past decade, have had a shot. Unlike the Denver's, Miami's, Dallas's, etc, the Ravens give their fans hope.

Just this year in fact, the Ravens won as many playoff games as Dallas has won the past 14 years.

Only 6 teams out of 32 in the NFL have made the playoffs the past two years, with the Ravens of course being one of them.

The Orioles however, never win.

The Orioles in fact, never even give their fans hope of a winning season, much less a post season victory.

Understand the difference Sham?

Now you can spin it if you want, but it's simple winning vs losing.

You're about losing... I'm not!

Thank God for the Ravens!

Oriole fans who criticize the Ravens. You remind me of geeks who got beat up in school. Stay with the Oriole blogs. The Ravens are out of your league

Chris

I dont "scew" anything

WHen I originally posted the forbes #'s that placed them 5 th in profitability for 2008, I posted a link. Go through my old posts and you'll find it

In that same link, it had where the Orioles were 3rd in profitability from 2002-2007

I think the problem is that you dont know how to read the numbers

I dont need to lie or scew, the numbers speak for themselves

Its the scumbag apologists like you who have to shamefully try to twist the numbers because thats the only way u can even try to defend the indefensible. Too bad you only fool the other nimrods with the peculiar hobby of defending the propoganda from the outhouse

SHAMROCK,

You are using a new age term that I just don't get so you must be very young. What does it mean to be "hating"on someone or something? Does that mean that you disagree with them? Explain so I will understand. I still have kids at home and they have friends in and out but they don't use that language.

Obviously it is slang that you and your peers understand but please let me in on it. Is it a verb, an adverb, an adjective or a noun, or like the "F" word can be adapted to all four?

Chris in HA

THIS is THE LAST TIME, IM GOING TO TRY TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU. IM NOT SCEWING ANYTHING---YOU CANT READ!!

The os are 17 in total value, but 5th in PROFITABILITY as it says in the chart below

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/33/baseball-values-09_The-Business-Of-Baseball_Income.html

next time u pop off at the mouth, u should at least take your foot out. I always said u had to be some kind of idiot to believe the crap from the warehouse. I think olo dim witted chris proves that theory. OOPS

someone tried to warn u chris that u didnt understand the forbes stuff, u should just shut up about it instead of proving it over and over every day

nice, a Ravens blog entry turns into rants about the Orioles payroll. How did that happen?
Just for spite, I'd like to see the team last in payroll and first in profit.
And when the Ravens post some losing records, I'll expect the same lame-ass repetitive rants from the ususal suspects. There ain't alot of difference in the NFL between 9-7 and 7-9.You might find out soon enough.

Ok, jason.

How is it you can accuse me of being illiterate when you can't even spell correctly? (The word is SKEW, not SCEW, so don't act all high and mighty with your mocking quotation marks)

If you're going to bother pointing out that I read the chart wrong, you might as well point out that their revenue ranking was not actually #17, but #21. So, in 2008, they ranked #22 in payroll and #21 in revenue.

Revenue:
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/33/baseball-values-09_The-Business-Of-Baseball_Revenue.html
Payroll:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=3324146

The number you must have SKEWED was the payroll. You can look above and see that they were #22. So how is it that you managed to repeatedly shout from the rooftops that they are in the bottom five in payroll? Last I checked, there were more than 26 teams in the majors.

And yes, in 2008, they were number 5 in profitability... so what? You want act like major league baseball isn't a business, fine go ahead and act like some evil owner without scruples is trying to sabotage your dollhouse. But it's not like there's a huge gap between them and the 8th most profitable team, Boston. It's 1.5 million dollars. And between us are the Twins and the A's. The median is the Astros and the Reds, who are making about $10 million less than the O's. The most profitable team, the Marlins, took in $15 million plus more than the O's. So I could say we're actually closer to the median than we are to the extremely profitable. Meanwhile, the Yankees and the Blue Jays rank near the bottom and their success isn't exactly on par with one another. They both beat out the Tigers, who were bleeding so bad they've been having to sell off what they can. Are the Tigers #1 in your book because they are at the bottom of the profitability list?

What does profitability prove in your estimation? That the O's are running a successful business? Oh, for shame!

So, what have we learned?

a) The O's payroll ranking coincides with their revenue ranking, which seems like good judgment as it is likely to keep the team stable and out of the situation Detroit is in.

b) Under Andy MacPhail, the team is 5th in profitability when prior to him, according to your posts, they were actually ranked 3rd. Does that sound like the movement of someone who is ONLY concerned with the bottom line?

I'm not following any type of "propoganda" (see... that's how you use mocking quotation marks to point out a mis-spelling) I've gotten from the warehouse. I actually just got so tired of seeing your repeated posts about profitability and payroll, which seemed questionable at best, that I decided to look up the numbers myself.

Wayne, the Ravens and the Cowboys both won 1 playoff game this year.

I would have loved more than anything, to see the Ravens take the Colts out, but I knew it was a long shot at best. I have to admit I thought the Ravens were just not a playoff caliber team, but they stepped up, actually made it in and even won the first round.
If only I could spend next fall being disappointed that the O's had only made it through the first round of the playoffs. It's much more likely however that by August or early Sept. the only drama in the O's season will be if they can possibly get back to .500 by the end of the season. Woo Hoo.

Sean,

You missed the point..... Please read again!

Dear Wayne & Jason C,
Football season is now over. And since you clearly hate the Orioles and everything they currently stand for, I look forward to seeing you on this blog in August. Please, don't come back to comment on a blog about something you clearly don't like.

Love,
Jeff

Ps - I've been reading the comments on this blog for a few months now and y'all just keep making the same arguments and getting proved wrong. For the love of God, come up with something new to say. Maybe, just maybe, someone will take you seriously then.

Wayne... both teams you mentioned play quite a very meaningful games.

Dallas has been pretty competitive over the decade past but fizzle out in the end. Since the Ravens SB win, they lead Dallas 6-4 in Playoff appearances and 7-6 in winning seasons. Add the two years prior to the SB Win, and Dallas has been exactly as competitive 6-6 and 7-7. This does not take into account.

Denver outside of their two choke jobs last two years, made the playoffs 7 times in the last 7 years. They also have one of the best Home Field records in the NFL in the past 10 years. That should matter to you since you go to games and frown on people who accentuate the "Oh" in the national anthem.

At least if you want to sound smart, pick truly despondent teams to compare, you doofus. You have a night and day reactions to each team, O's do nothing right, Ravens do nothing wrong. Very manic. Try to be a little more objective and weigh things out, not only talking sports, but in life in general.

Gil- hating is being obsessively miserable and negative towards something. They finding fault in anything that is done and typically LOUD about it, acting like a know it all. Their criticisms are not constructive and sound more like like whining complaining. I have a relative like this, can't talk to him.

Good example are the loons calling the Radio shows saying its time to get rid of Joe Flacco. Can't see the good in anything.

Another, the bozo's who couldn't let themselves enjoy the Ravens playoff run because they didn't "deserve" to be there. Do you think Jets fans feel that way? They sure as hell don't belong in the playoffs.

I really don't care for the word, but there isn't really a better word to label that type of person. Wayne is a hater. If the O's traded for Albert Pujols, he would complain about it.

Don't worry, they'll blow it in the 9th! -Randy Quaid in ML2
