NFL: Who cares?

Well, I do, but the final week of the NFL regular season brings together a lot of teams with a lot of different motivations. Some teams are motivated to end on a strong note. Some are motivated to go home for a long vacation. Some are just trying to get into the postseason without anybody important getting hurt.

Commissioner Roger Goodell was just interviewed on the CBS broadcast and said he is looking at ways to add incentive for teams to be more competitive in the final weeks of the season when it might make more sense to call off your dogs to call off your dogs. Don't know how you would do that, but I'm all for it.

Gotta give the Dolphins and Steelers credit. They both look very motivated, even though it'll take quite a few strange bounces around the rest of the AFC to get either of those teams intos the playoffs.

I'll be blogging football throughout the day, particularly during the Ravens' late-afternoon game against the Oakland Raiders. Hope you'll join in the conversation. I'll try to answer a few baseball posts, too, but this is a pretty important day for local football fans, so the Ravens obviously will be my major focus.

I wish MLB would make the Orioles care

12 years of losing and no sign of improvement. If the Orioles were in the NFL then Roger Goodell would probably step in and make things happen. Too bad the MLB commish is a total moron.

I wonder how Roger Goodell would tackle a team that outsources its fans, got a regional network for free and is always in the bottom in payroll even when they are profitable team…..

Not to mention the owner also owns a powerful law firm that has earned multiple settlements and is hell bent to own all of Baltimore before he dies. Why did Baltimore get stuck having a villain from a Bond movie and not George Steinbrenner, John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino or just someone who likes baseball

@ the above commenters

Considering one of the reasons for action is to be better to the fans, my guess is that Goodell would take a look at the kind of people who comment on local blogs and radio shows, decide they don't deserve help, and move along.

@ Peter

I didn't see the commissioner's comments, but really I'm unsure of what he could do. As much as I dislike the idea of a team not making a bona fide attempt to win a game, I also don't like someone on the outside trying to make a determination and hand out reward and punishment.

Fortunately or unfortunately, though, the Ravens aren't in a position to worry about that. Any player that isn't playing today is already injured, not being protected. Though I wouldn't be surprised to see a quicker trigger when it comes to pulling starters if the Ravens are dominating.

Dick,

So how do explain the Lions?

Also, if we don't remember recent history, MLB had to step in with the Montreal Expos situation.

If teams dont want to win its up to the fans to make the call to support them or not. You are not a bad fan if you dont want to root for some kind of disaster like the Orioles, Lions etc

Pete,

Why do want the NFL teams to try when you dont want the Orioles to try to compete?

My advice to any team under fire by Warden Goodell that they are not trying would be use the ol Oriole excuse and cite the plan.

Yo, John, what makes you think the Orioles don't care? Just because they aren't doing what you think they should be doing?

And Dick, the MLB commish is a total moron??? Really? Baseball has never been in better shape, the new divisions and the wild card have been huge successes and too often, losing teams blame their failures on everything but their own stupidity, and that includes the Orioles. That's Selig's fault because......? Unless and until the Player's Association realizes its role in the health of the game, baseball is hamstrung.

As for forcing teams to "try", especially at the end of the season, how is that a commissioners problem? When you have losing rewarded with high drafts picks, there is always going to be the suspicion of tanking it. You think St. Louis fans are unhappy the Rams have the worst record in the league? They would probably be upset if today the Rams found a way to beat SF. Unless or until the league and that's any sports league changes the way picks are rewarded, there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Looks like the Ravens better start trying harder or they might lose to Oakland HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Yes ol bud is a moron. He will be remembered for roids, not knowing what to do during that horrible all star game throwing his hands up like I DON’T KNOW!!! Letting teams like the Orioles not give a shit etc etc He should have stayed selling cars W would have been a better commish.

The wildcard sucks also

if they want to make it more competitive towards the end of the year, add a 7th playoff team to play the 2 seed. Only the 1st seed gets a bye. Makes the 1st seed more important and adds a few more meaningful games to the schedule.

Teams do this all the time. This year was just weird because the Jets got to play two teams that don't need to win and the Colts tanked an undefeated season (which is criminally insane).

Bud Selig is almost the worst current commissioner. I cant say he is the worst because David Stern is under investigation and his sport is overran by thugs and guns but then again guns do not improve performance… Do they? If they do maybe we should buy the whole Orioles team guns.. wait that cant be true... Luke Scott has hundreds of them and he still sucks!

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
