My take: Ravens will win
If you haven't already, you can check out my latest "News item" column by clicking here. I'm pretty confident the Ravens will beat the Raiders to advance into the postseason on Sunday, and so are the oddsmakers who have made them a 10 1/2 point favorite, but I'll be back soon with a Sunday column that explains why winning really isn't the only thing that matters this weekend.

Bigger issue... need help winning in Pick 'em. In first, up by 1, $900 on the line. That will buy a dandy of a bottle of wine, maybe Cakebread Cabernet or a nice Clos du Val Reserve Merlot.
IND/BUF Can Buffalo 1st string beat Indy's 2nd?
NE/HOU How long does Brady play? Do they care about 3rd seed vs. 4th?
NYJ/CIN Same with NE, do they want to give Pitt hope of making playoffs?
PHI/DAL Who knows?
GB/AZ Have a feeling Leinart will play alot, is Don Majkowski still the back up in GB???
Sucks, I have to have the day picked by 1pm

Peter,
The Ravens may win, or they may not win. Whatever the outcome, the Ravens are not championship material, at least not this year. Does anyone really think the Ravens are the best NFL team? Do they really amount to a team capable of winning the Super Bowl?
No. A thousand times, no.
So, what's the point? And, when does spring training start?

It all depends on which Raiders' team shows up. I'm an Orioles fan, but when it comes to football, I'm a Raiders' fan. They have beaten some pretty good teams this year..Steelers, Eagles, Bengals and Broncos, and when they did, they looked pretty good. But, they have lost to teams like the Chiefs and Browns, and at times have looked horrible. This year, their fortunes have been directly connected to the QB situation. With Gradkowski, they looked great, with Russell, usually terrible, and the jury is still out on Frye (although he was pretty much interception prone last week). Hard tram to predict, but they are capable of beating the good teams, like the Ravens. Hopefully, either way, it will be a good game to watch.

I honestly think the Ravens could make a Superbowl run. We have beaten ourselves all year. These other teams aren't beating us. If we could correct the stupid penalties and actually make the plays that are given to us, i.e. Mason. I think we have the capabilities of being a very dangerous football team. Even a Superbowl Champion.

At least there is a CHANCE that the ravens will make the postseason from one season to the next. U cant say the same for the O's
I dont want to hear about the salary cap debate. The Os are flush with resources, they should be taking advantage of the fact that there isnt a salary cap.
Since Greedy Petey bought the team in 94, the Os are:
VS BOS 95 151 .386
VS NYY 90 161 .359
and dont tell me that Atkins and Millwood are going to change any of that
2000-2009 ALL OPPS 698-920 .431
which is the worst decade in the history of the franchise. No need to show urgency and add any premium talent now though. Its not like we're one of the most profitable teams in baseball or anything. Top 5 in profitability, bottom 5 in payroll and the standings. Patience, my friends, patience. LOL

The Ravens may very well win tomorrow and squeak into the playoffs, but unless they stop making idiotic mistakes they'll be one and done.
So far they have not shown themselves capable of winning the big games against good teams on the road. Since that's all they'll have in the playoffs it's difficult to be too optimistic. On the other hand they have been able to play even the very best teams close, and could/should have won most of the ones they lost. It's hard to imagine Harbaugh being able to suddenly transform the Ravens into the tight, disciplined team they need to be to advance very far, but you never know. The Ravens have their chance, lets see what they make of it.

Roy,
U may very well be right, but it sure is more interesting to talk about making the playoffs this yr and waht needs to be correct4ed during the games themselves than discussing elaborate pie in the sky scenarios where if everything falls into place, our baseball team might make a run in a couple of yrs.
Man, Im glad we got the Ravens

Yeah, you were right last week too.

Hey Pete, just so you know your link takes you to a story from Jan 2,2009.Same old lovable laughable Sun.Here I was hoping we were debating whether Cam Cameron comes back.Hoping for a new offensive coordinator and a new defensive coordinator next year.

well, you've had yourself a rough decade!

This is matchup between two teams that have some of the widest deparities in points for and points against in the NFL. Although Bert Bell coined the phrase "On any given Sunday", tomorrow will not be that given Sunday for the Raiders. Ravens 34 Raiders 10.
As Shamrock indicated, Troy Smith will get in around midway through the 4th quarter and barring injury it will be his last appearance in a Ravens uniform.

Jason:
Believe me, I'm glad we have the Ravens as well. Of course it's more fun to follow a team that goes into every season with a realistic chance to make the playoffs.
I am hoping the Ravens do well in the playoffs, (I'm not really worried about the Raiders game) but they will have to show us more than they have so far this season to get beyond the first round. Maybe they can, I hope so. Time will tell.

Hey Burt, are you just now discovering that The Sun is an absolute joke and should have been put to sleep a long time ago? Someone put a pillow over its face and get it over with. It's embarrassing. I picked up a copy last weekend and the sports "section" was 3 1/2 pages. And most of it was agate and wire copy. It's like watching Gene Hackman stumble around before collapsing in a pool of his own blood in Bonnie and Clyde.

Off Topic:
Why the lack of coverage and lack of enthusiasm over the Navy victory? I can tell you the fans in Missouri are talking about the loss and the St. Louis Post Dispatch has given it extensive coverage. I think in terms of square inches of paper space Ohio State got more coverage than Navy when you take the front page picture into consideration.

true Elite... how bout that Ricky Dobbs?
Does he have another 25+Td season in him?
Posted by: SHAMROCK | January 3, 2010 10:05 AM
The media in St. Louis sure thinks so. More than the players the folks in Missouri are impressed with Ken Niumatalolo. Right now they would gladly trade Pinkle to Annapolis for Ken. Go to www.stltoday.com and read what Bernie Miklasz had to say about the game.

No what surprises me is that as of 12:26 today the link still isn't fixed.I discovered it earlier, but thought it would be corrected, but I see that is something the Sun may not be capable of doing.Would hate to see Pete get his walking papers in the middle of a Ravens game, even though we have disagreed on many an occasion,I for one, would surely miss him.But hard to tell where the Sun is headed at this point.

Shamrock the Greek,
Go the Wine Source and think French for your wine. In particular think Kermit Lynch imports.
Posted by: Elite Elephant Lover | January 3, 2010 8:26 PM
Elite...
Haven't figured out how French wine works yet. The labels being in French is a bit intimidating. Been to Napa/Sonoma three times. I'll start working on French wine soon enough.
I would love to go to France for wine, if it wasn't so French. That and I fear getting kidnapped for sex trade like in "Taken". My dad isn't Liam Neeson so I would be in trouble. HA!

I live about 2 hours away from Pittsburgh, so I'm surrounded by Steeler fans. I've been a Baltimore Ravens fan since I can remember. Honestly, I think I started to like them because they had purple jerseys haha. They can definitely make a run at the superbowl. If you look at the teams on the AFC side of the spectrum, they were all close games for the Ravens. We were plagued by penalities and missed field goals. They shouldn't have been in the wild card position. They should have won the division, but I'm glad they got in. Now that they're in, they're a force to be reckoned with. With Brady banged up and Welker out, I think they can down the Pats.
I'm predicting a Ravens-Packers Superbowl.
