Tigergate: Timing is everything

golfdigestcover.bmpTake a careful look at this cover of the January issue of Golf Digest, which leads with a story titled "10 Tips Obama Can Take From Tiger."

In fairness to the magazine, the January issue was printed in mid-November, well before the Tiger Woods scandal broke, so there is nothing the folks over there can do but take their lumps and try to laugh about it. The rest of us sure will.

Of course, the likelihood of something like that happening was pretty high, considering Woods' status as the golf media's go-to cover guy and the seemingly minute possibility of anything coming about that would alter his status as the most popular athlete in the world or smudge his squeaky clean public image.

I'm just waiting to see if President Obama invites Tiger and Elin over to the White House for a beer. It has worked before.

Can't wait for the late night shows to get a hold of this one......

Letterman's Top Ten will be priceless. (no wait, he may take a pass on this one. A little too close to home)

Here's one of the richest, most famous celebrities in the world, #1 in his field, with an absolutely gorgeous wife at home, and he thinks he also gets to have all the women he wants on the road as well. He could have stayed on top of the world by behaving in a moral way, but now he is paying a steep price for the pride and arrogance that let him think he could indulge his lust as ever he pleased. This is justice.

I don't know much about the law, but I do watch enough "Cops" to have, ahem, "learned" that Florida has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to domestic violence. I'm guessing the reason he wouldn't talk to the police with scratches and bruises about his head and shoulders was to keep her cute little fanny out jail. How would THAT have played in the media??!

In six months or less, this whole story will be forgotten. The fact is, we as Americans are forgiving of the transgressions of our celebrities, whether in politics, entertainment, or sport. What's hurting Tiger right now is the way he's handling it. Since another commenter brought up Letterman, now there's the perfect example of how to handle it right. He came out before the story broke, he was direct and honest to his audience and fans, then just moved on. By hiding and refusing to speak (unless in vague comments), Tiger's only dragging this out further.

Sex is not a crime and we need to stop pushing our morals on others. I'm soo tired of self righteous zealots lambasting the guy for his sexual exploits. The only person that has any say in that is his wife and the rest of you critics should get real lives and do something meaningful instead of standing in judgment of others' behavior.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think you're kind of missing the point here. The average guy doesn't shove his beautiful family in your face and tell you to buy a Buick.

To bad Tiger wasn't caddying for Bill Clinton.

not to condone what he did, but any pro athlete's wife who thinks their husband is keeping their nose clean is out of their mind. He's rich, famous, blessed with enormous chiclet-teeth; who could resist him? Hopefully his wife had her emotional outburst and now she can respond the way she should have in the first place--start renegotiating that pre-nup.

Pete, what do ya think of Mike Gonzalez? He'd be a bit expensive but he's a great reliever, he'd do a lot to shoreup the pen and he's a lefty...

to elaborate on 99percenter's comments--what does any pro athlete (e.g. Roger Clemens, McGwire) think they're going to accomplish by being deliberately vague about what they done? The steroid scandal in MLB has shown that the way to deal with these things is to air them out and move on (how many people remember that Brian Roberts used steroids??). Why does Tiger think this won't apply to him? (Maybe it's because he knows he slept with SO many women that he thinks he won't get off as easily as Brian Roberts?)

Since Letterman is in re-reruns and may not touch this subject matter anyway, here the Top Ten Tiger Woods jokes:

10 - I guess it goes to show that when you play with only wood, you'll get beat with an iron.

9 - How many women is Tiger Woods currently sleeping with? FORE!

8 - The first time she picked up a club in anger, Elin Nordegren shot up to #2 on Golf's All Time Money Winning List.

7 - What does Tiger Woods have in common with baby seals? They both got clubbed by Scandinavians.

6 - Just heard about a new movie: Crouching Tiger, Hitting Hydrant

5 - What's the difference between Tiger Woods' house and his Escalade? The white airbag in the Escalade didn't blow up and hit him in the face.

4 - Tiger woods is the holder of 15 majors -- 14 golf majors and one major screw-up.

3 - What's the difference between an SUV and a golf ball? Tiger can drive a ball 400 yards.

2 - Tiger Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree. He couldn’t decide between a wood and an iron.

1 - What were Tiger Woods and his wife doing out at 2.30 in the morning? They went clubbing.

How did "Anonymous" get credit for this list?

zigzag,

I don't recall Tiger being dragged down the aisle by zealots. If you want to have all kinds of sex, that's fine. Don't get married yet then.

This whole thing says a lot about Tiger Woods as a person. Hopefully, anyone who looks up to Tiger can learn from it.

The guy is probably the best golfer of all time and he's got hundreds of millions of dollars from all of his endorsements. Then he's got a supermodel wife and two kids at home and he can do anything he wants whenever he wants for his family.

Tiger's behavior, and the behavior of several hundred rich and famous people before him, goes to show you that having literally everything you've ever wanted isn't necessarily the road to happiness.

If you're not happy with nothing you won't be happy with everything.

How about placing some blame where it also belongs - on the women? Yes, Tiger had no business having affairs with other women, but who forced those women to agree to sex/relationships with him? Women can say "No, you're married." Sure, sometimes a sneaky married guy seduces a woman who doesn't know he's married, but that certainly isn't the case with famous athletes, actors/actresses, and politicians, whose marital status is public knowledge. It takes two to tango.

Tiger Woods is now to be known as Cheeta Woods!

Back to taking your sly digs at Obama, I see. . .

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Back to overreacting to everything, I see...

If you look on the new Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 gamebox for the Wii you'll see the following phrase on the back:

"Feel The Drama"

Woods and Obama are both frauds the celebrity cult love so it's great to see the both crashing. McPhail is a fraud too but I guess he couldn't fit on the cover.

We'll be stocked with plenty of back up catchers and not much of anything else.

People cheat on their spouses every day. Some get caught and some don't. I fail to see the fascination everyone seems to have with this particular episode of human frailty and imperfection.
"Squeaky-clean"???
I never thought of Woods as any such thing. It was never an issue. Therefore it isn't an issue now.
He was the greatest golfer of all time before the breaking news.... and he still is.
Just as Kobe Bryant isn't any less of a basketball player, Wade Boggs isn't any less of a hitter, and Bill Clinton's legacy is still that of the best president this country had over the past 95 years.

Bravo Peter for saying the truth. I wonder if the "guy" who wrote that statement is aware of marriage vows. Not criminal to break them you say? Maybe a valid point but when you wind up trashing the neighbors property after whatever it was occured, and the police get called, it becomes a public record.

Any one want proof that Tiger Woods is a 100% certified fool and moron? Two things prove it.

1.) The guy has a drop dead gorgeous loving wife and two adorable children. So what's he do? Look at the skanks he "allegedly" had affairs with. Put their pictures next to Elin and her children. Yep, he's a moron.

2.) All the money in the world and the moron has one cell phone? Then the MORON (hate to be redundant but the adjective fits so well here) leaves a message on one skank's phone to tell her "hey, it's tiger, do me a huge favor will you? please, please remove your name from your cell. I think my wife might be calling you...." HELLO MORON????Anyone home in that putter brain of yours? Just goes to show that all the money and fame in the world can't buy you intelligence. I hope Elin takes this moron for all his money, takes 100% custody of the children and finds a REAL MAN because Cheetah Woods isn't one.

And last but not least, how about the skanks sharing half the blame here? I'm sure they all knew he was married and had two children. They are just as much to fault as the MORON is.

My bet is Elin stays with the creep. Always happens. They just don't want to lose that meal ticket and the status. The only woman who I admire and have respect for is the wife of Gov Mark Sanford who kicked his arse out and then moved out herself with the kids. If all women had that kind of guts and class.

That said, the real fools are the ones who believe a golfer is actually an athlete. Hey Peter, can you explain to me how it could be the bottom of the ninth, game seven of the world series; home team down by one run, bases loaded, two out and 50,000 fans screaming at the top of their lungs and yet the batter can still concentrate with all that noise as the pitcher unleashes a 97mph fast ball. But hey, Tiger (or insert your golfer of choice) is lining up this 4 inch putt....shhhhhhh....quiet please! Athletes my fat arse. Bunch of prima donnas is more like it.

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
