The morning after
I'm sure everybody overslept today, especially if you stayed up to watch the San Diego Chargers absolutely crush the Tennesee Titans on the road to lock up a first-round playoff bye. That puts an end to the Titans' dark-horse playoff run, though I still think you have to give Jeff Fisher credit for keeping his team focused after that horrible 0-6 start.
So, you might as well start your day at noon with Sportsline on WBAL (1090 AM). We'll continue to size up tomorrow's big game between the Ravens and Steelers and look back on the sports year that was 2009. I'll be soliciting calls from local fans ranking the top stories of the year. If you're not in signal range, go to WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.
Today's column: You can do your homework by reading my year-end "News item" column either in today's print edition of The Sun or by checking it out right here.

Play to win in 2010! Spend the money! Get the players!
Let's go PA and AM!
Winning is all that matters. We have the tools! We have the technology!
Let 2010 be Miller Time!
Stop the streak dead in it's track at 12!
Bring the fans back!

Great stories of 2009:
Flacco and company in AFC title game last year.
Steelers get one for the other thumb (six super bowls--the way a Steelers fan can steal any braggin' rights from Ravens fans).
Steroids
Melt-Down by Cypress, CA native (and Western High School of Anaheim graduate) E. Woods--and the best (worst) may be yet to come as performance enhancement and other tid-bits come into the conversation.
Oh yeah--I would be remiss to not mention Franklin High School's great kicker, Mr. G., who may be the best kicker in the state at the present time, Billy Cundiff included.

News item: Michael Phelps and his handlers had to perform serious damage control after a photograph was published in a British tabloid showing him smoking marijuana.
My take: It was an embarrassing little episode for Baltimore's Olympic golden boy, but it probably humanized him for a certain demographic segment of the sports public, and it certainly helped him refocus on his swimming career.

Yeah right. You and everyone else said the same thing after the clown's DUI. My bet is his mommy will come out with another book which no one will read, and line of clothing which no one will wear, before he sees another gold medal around his neck. His 20 minutes of fame has now drifted into the shadows until he next DUI or bong hit arrives on the scene.

Pete,
It's survey results like today that explain why the Orioles will NEVER win again! Fan complacency! 59% of the respondents say, yes the Orioles are doing the right thing! They have given the warehouse another pass and saying that just about 60% are satisfied with half hearted attempts to sign great players only to get ineffective retreads that no one else wants!
A very sad state of affairs but PA should be real happy, laughing all the way to the bank!

Keith,
Pretty amazing that 41% of you don't understand the game of baseball enough to see that they are in fact going about the rebuilding in a terrific way.

Hey Gil,
Wow! what a novel idea! I wish we could find a GM that simply wanted to win now as you suggest. Man, that would mean all the losing could stop. You should really overnite these in letter form to "the warehouse".
Just spend the money and get the players and Win Now! You my firend are a genius!
Why didn't someone else think of that.
Just give Hollday a billion dollars for 20 years. Then we'll have our cleanup hitter for.....20 Years!!!
Then trade Weiters and Tillman for Agonz and then give him a trillion dollar extension for a 50 year deal. Man, then we'll be competitive long after both of us are gone.
Man, whoever said being a GM was hard lied. The warehouse lied to us.
There Wayne and pals. I'm on your side now. I have switched allegiance

Dearest Bill Frederick,
Who died and left you Peter Gammon? As far as infrastructure, ie draft and player development I think AM is squared away. However, the O's aren't in the AL Central or the NL Central and its a totally different model. This is not one size fits all. Even the Angels wouldn't compete regularly in the AL East, just like the Jays don't and Rays won't! However, a light switch isn't going to come on all at once where free agents will want to sign here! Nor will another light switch come on and AM will pull triggers and PA will get out the checkbook. That is called long-term committment, committment to winning, showing the elite players your in the game to win not just field a team and make money! That step takes time, not just one day can we say our pitching is there and we go out and try to sign the best players available, it doesn't work like that. Some free agents are generational, as in once in a life time, young, proven, switch hit and gold glove. We severely missed the boat, look at the bums available this year and next! So if your happy continue to enjoy less than .500 seasons, diminishing crowds and more people bailing off this version of the Titanic! As a 45 year fan of the Orioles, I have to say they are an embarrassment and feel most sorry for Nick, who is now stuck in pergatory for the next 5 years!
