MacPhail on Johnson

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said he was not particularly surprised that Double-A pitching prospect Steve Johnson was selected by the Giants in the Rule 5 Draft today.

"Not really,'' he said. "We knew it was a possibility. The kid is truly a prospect. I don't think there is any doubt about that. The question is whether he can stay at the major league level. We just don't think he's that close."

Though the Orioles have a handful of players on the 40-man roster who probably could have been outrighted to make room for Johnson on the O's protected list, MacPhail would not second-guess the decision to leave Johnson unprotected.

"Our judgment was that he just wasn't close enough to be able to stick with the big league club all year,'' he said. "The odds are we'll get him back. That's what happens with the vast majority of (Rule 5 draftees)."

I'm think his father is thrilled that this happened. Wouldn't you be?

Along with Pitts, the losing just never stops. And even when the O's have big news (millwood), it's just a sidenote when it comes to real baseball news.

AM doesn't think he's close, yet the O's had arguably the worst pitching in the majors in 09'. Close to what AM? Oh....that's right, you have all these unbelievably great young arms in the system. Gotcha!

Dave Johnson is a happy man! His son just escaped baseball hell.

Reports are that the Braves traded Soriano to the Rays for a pitcher... any info on what the O's were offering? Doesn't seem like the pitcher Atlanta got back was much of anything...

wayne,

His father is thrilled because his son got a potential guarantee to be on the field for Opening Day 2010 a year or two early. If you heard him on air when he found out he was becoming an Oriole, you'd know he eventually wants to see him in the uniform that he wore.

Also, you just threw Pittsburgh under the bus yourself. Nothing like being a blowhard and a hypocrite sometimes.

Tony, I think the issue was the $8m or so per year that Soriano might end up getting in 2010 more than just the player. The Orioles could use a closer, but they didn't need to pay that much.

What about rumors that Sherrill was on the block? How much could the Dodgers expect for him in return?

Hey.... Idiot!

Of course Dave said what he said. He works for the Orioles. Wake up!

Wayne -

You seem to hate anything and everything associated with this team. And you seem to have been holding on to that hate for several years.

So, here's a simple question for you: Why are you still here?

not brooks,

Simple..... I hate losing! you should as well...

i've been a 'full' season tix holder for years, thus I put my money where my mouth is. I love baseball, but yes, I hate what the Angelos family has done to this organization.

So while you orange and black apologist continue to suck up whatever the warehouse throws out, there are MANY just like me who a fed up, but who still put loads of dollars in the O's kitty.... The numbers are dwindling though, and fast.

So keep waving your 1983 O's banner, while saying 'we're on the right track'. As for me, I'll keep holding them accountable for the misery they continue to put on the people who pay their bills.

If there were more like me, and less like you, things wouldn't still be so dreadful.

Wake up brooksie!

Wayne,

I was talking about the trade that brought him here when Dave Johnson cried on the pregame show with Tom Davis. The tears had nothing to do with "towing the line." I don't think even Jim "The Shameless Schill" Hunter could have cried on command like that and he's a company man if there ever was one.

As for Dave being thrilled about Steve's move to San Fran, I made my remark before I even saw he commented on it. I was simply remarking on the reality of the trade. His son gets a shot. It's a thrilling thing wherever it happens. It doesn't take away from the FACT that he was ecstatic to have him in Baltimore. Don't project your negativity to everyone else.

Also, without getting into it, my name is James actually.

James,

Fair enough!

Wayne,

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but how would more people like you make things less dreadful? It seems to me that things might actually be worse with more fans like you because you continue to pay for season tickets even though you are completely disenfranchised with the team. I applaud you for being able to do that, and I'm certainly not trying to talk you out of your season tickets; I'm just merely confused by your assertion. Thanks.

"If there were more like me, and less like you, things wouldn't still be so dreadful. "

That has to be the most foolish things I've read on here in days. The only way you can tell PA how you feel is with your money. DO YOU THINK HE SITS HERE READING HIS BLOG!!??!!!! You have done nothing by all of your whining and complaining to change a thing. Perhaps in your mind you have. Sadly that doesn't translate into action much the way you think.

Face it wayne, you're as a much a part of the problem, if not more. you make it possible for PA to keep churning out a profit despite the endless mediocrity.

Enzo,

You're half correct!

Yes, my dollars do feed the problem. Thing is though, I wish not to give up my seats in hope that sooner than later, PA will sell the team to an owner who cares about winning. I can hope!

Please know however, I don't simply voice my opinion by blogging now and again. I won't elaborate right now, but know that I'm doing what I can.....

Side Note: Being in Brooklyn automatically makes you more sports savvy than most baltimore bloggers.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
