Ravens: It's Flacco time

Stand by for my Sunday column, which will be up on the Web site soon and in the print edition in the morning. In a sense, I'm calling out Joe Flacco, but in a good way. I know he's done as much or more than anyone could have expected from a guy in only his second year as an NFL quarterback, but I'm looking for him to take another step forward in tomorrow's showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field.

The one thing Joe Cool has yet to do is prove he can go toe-to-toe with the elite quarterbacks in the game on a consistent basis. Of course, no one could reasonable expect him to do that in his rookie season -- or his second season, for that matter -- but as Year Two winds down, he has a chance to make a big statement against Ben Roethlisberger and solidify the Ravens' playoff standing in the process.

And it's not just about Flacco. The Ravens have not scored a big win against a playoff-caliber team on the road since Week 2 in San Diego. This would be a good way to warm up for what figures to be a postseason spent entirely on the road.

Man Mike Preston isnt gonna like you very much after sayimg that. He hasnt caught up to the fact that the NFL is a pass happy league now and running is used to basically keep the defense honest. Also when he says the Ravens arent running enough he obviously hadnt seen the stat where the Ravens run/pass the ball almost 50% of the time for both. Sounds like a balanced offensive team to me.

Also can you bring back the random guest person that would pick games against the columnist every week? I liked watching when the experts like Preston would get beat by people like Kim Meisner picking games staright up.Think you know everything but you don't no nothin!

Pete,
All due respect, I really think this matchup is more about the secondaries then the quarterbacks. Even if Joe vs. Ben is sexy, consider this: The Steelers' cornerbacks have 0 interceptions this year, and the Steelers have just 8 as a team. The Raven's on the other hand are missing 3 starters in their secondary, assuming Reed doesn't play. Certainly this "matchup" has a huge role to play in the success of the quarterbacks, but I think that the group that performs, *gulp* best, will lead their team to victory.

"The Steelers' cornerbacks have 0 interceptions this year, and the Steelers have just 8 as a team."

So I guess the Steelers team with 8 INTs is going to beat the Steelers team with 0.

Actually it comes down to Flacco not proving himself tobe a clutch player like Ben yet.

San Diego wasn't a playoff caliber team when the Ravens eeked out a win; now they are. If the Ravens do make the playoffs there will only be one game on the road and then it will be time to get out the golf clubs. But only after blaming the refs for yet another loss later today.

Hey Jim Mora, Chargers were a preseason pick to be in the playoffs! Justa because the Ravens beat them, didn't change that fact. They were and are a playoff team. Take your lifeless seahawks, who lost to Tampa Bay and hang out at the Seattle newspapers!
Not sure what not brooks is trying to say. But the point is Flacco needs to make a statement today and play up to his billing! Beat the squeelers with Big cry baby Ben in there! NO excuses after this game.

Yes, not brooks, I wrote exactly what I meant. Let me clarify...

Ryan Clark (safety) has 2
Tyrone Carter (safety) has 2
Keyaron Fox (LB) has 1
Troy Polamalu (safety) has 3

So, that being said, Steelers' cornerbacks have 0 interceptions, while they have 8 as a TEAM. Seeing as how it's the corners job to cover wide receivers 99% of the time, that makes it a serious weakness.

Time for the Ravens to step up and win on the road against a good team. For the Ravens the playoffs have already started, and today will show if they're a genuine playoff contender. If they lose today, but still manage to back into the playoffs anyway, does it really matter? It will be nothing but good teams on the road for the rest of the playoffs so they might as well show they are ready right now. If they can't beat a Steelers team that they know very very well and is as injury riddled as the Ravens themselves are, then they don't belong in the playoffs. I think they'll step up and win today, 24-17.
