MASN star search continues
The people over at MASN are in the early stages of their search for someone to replace Buck Martinez in the broadcast booth, and there are some intriguing possibilities. The network reportedly has talked to Mike Flanagan -- who would seem to be an obvious candidate -- but continues to consider a number of other options. Among the tantalizing names that are being thrown around behind closed doors are Bill Ripken, Brady Anderson and even Yankees broadcaster Ken Singleton, depending on his interest and contract situation.
There apparently is no rush to get someone in place, since spring training is still about two months away, and you may be hearing more names before the final choice is made. But for now, let the debate about the aforementioned candidates begin.

Peter,
Who do I send my resume to over there at MASN? I'd be good fit, I think.

Art Donovan ?? Dude's just funny

I think Brady Anderson would be pretty awesome. I always like listening to him call in to Jerry Coleman's show.

Maybe Anita Marks can give one of those favors we heard about this week to the Angelos boys and get the job.

Will B,
What kind of favors did you hear about?
Posted by: Anonymous | December 18, 2009 6:23 PM
Flanagan's very knowledgeable but he does tend to ramble in a smoker's whine.
Buck was also very knowledgeable but sheeeesh.... that niccotine-strained scratchy voice of his was very caustic to the ears.... worse than Flanny.
I love Billy Ripken, but his speaking voice is a bit rough as well.
Brady Anderson? Very intelligent and insightful.
The only thing about him is that he tends to extend the articulation of his "S'" sounds, characteristic of the stereotype homosexual....... and I'm not sure people would warm up to that for three hours at a time.
I like Ken Singleton. I always thought he was out of place in the Bronx.
I think his heart is still with the O's.
He's got a nice voice and I think he'd do great interviewing the players because they'd all recognize him as a true Oriole great.
Another guy I would not be surprised to see pop up in someone's broadcasting booth is Jamie Moyer. He's a very articulate and insightful guy with an Oriole connection.
Other outside possibilities are Jim Traber, Jeffery Hammonds, Joe Orsulak, or Mike Deveraux.
Tell you who I'd like to see go into color commentary..... Kevin Millar.
I think he'd be awesome.

If Gary Thorne is coming as the play by play guy, then it won't matter who is the analyst. Thorne makes everyone look bad. What a moron that guy is. He knows nothing about the history of the Orioles gets his facts so screwed up.
Posted by: DJ | December 18, 2009 6:35 PM
anybody but the nasal drone of Mike Flanagan. Please.
Flannie has the knowledge, but not the voice, nor the personality for a color analyst.
Flannie is more effective at inducing sleep then Ambien. He'd be good at signing the television station off the air at night.
Not crazy about Brady either, he's another one with a voice issue, its as irritating as Flannies drone, but in a different way that is not pleasant to listen too.
Posted by: LouieNCanton | December 18, 2009 6:58 PM
My first choice would be Jim Kitty Kaat. He is a talented broadcaster, a bright guy, a person who will give an honest assessment, and a wonderful gentleman.
Oriole fans would love listening to him.
I would be happy, also to have Kenny Singleton back in the Oriole nest.
Posted by: Barry | December 18, 2009 7:08 PM
Bear - DEAD ON! (still laughing)
Although I probably could get used to Billy's voice after hearing him on 105.7.
Singy is awesome but I doubt he'd leave his current gig.

Now, this is the blog entry where folks can stay on negative point and blast away at MASN and Angelos without veering way off course (see JJohnson blog topic by JZ).
Ok, fire away.

Flanagan is no longer held in high esteem after being responsible for 6 years of futility. Need to break ties.
Posted by: Arnold Jones | December 18, 2009 8:40 PM
"There is nothing more dispiriting to a team than getting in a circumstance where you're losing games that you really should be winning and we're very confident that Mike ... and others can really lock down the back end of the bullpen and reward the young starters with those games that they should be winning."
Sounds like another one of those "warehouse plants" on the blog again Pete! Better track this nut down and bar him from the board.
Posted by: cush | December 18, 2009 8:56 PM
Useless topic!
All one needs is an Oriole homer and an AAK.

Why not some good looking gal.Maybe Amber all decked out next to Jim. That way when the O's are losing we will have something nice and sweet to look at. Make sure she's ahottie though.
Posted by: roy | December 18, 2009 9:16 PM
AAK? Angelos Ass Kisser?
Posted by: Rob | December 18, 2009 9:25 PM
Too bad both Anderson and Jim Palmer would be color commentators. It'd be kind of funny to see them in the booth together after hearing Palmer accuse Anderson's 1996 year being the result of steroids.
Posted by: Charles Irwin | December 18, 2009 10:24 PM
I think the O's should get Adrian Gonzales to do play by play. They could give up Arrieta, Tillman, Berken, Wigginton, Scott, Pie, and Hernandez.
Posted by: SHAMROCK | December 18, 2009 10:35 PM
the sun comes up. the sun goes down. and as expected, wayne comes through once again. yeah, how about like every other network, masn hires the team's biggest critic and put him on the broadcast? That's what YES and NESN do, right? Get a grip Oliver.
Posted by: jim66 | December 18, 2009 10:48 PM
How 'bout you, Pete? Interested?
Posted by: BobbyWoontz | December 18, 2009 11:10 PM
C'mon, Ken, hit it in the bullpen! If Singleton isn't tied contractually to the Yanks, it would be wonderful to have him on the O's broadcasts.
I strongly, strongly agree with so many others here: Gary Thorne also has to go.
He's a talented and versatile play-by-play man, but he isn't a baseball guy and DEFINITELY isn't an Orioles guy. Frankly, he comes off as somewhat pompous and unknowledgeable. (Sorry if that's not really a word -- it's Friday night and I've had 6 Natty Bohs over at Connelly's.)
Posted by: Smitty | December 18, 2009 11:19 PM
Roy,
If it gets you all excited to look at Amber, you'd be better off if she remains as the useless "sideline" reporter, where she's on camera alot, than as a useless color commentator in the booth. Either way, I guess the game just gets in the way of your lusting for Amber.
Posted by: easywriter01 | December 18, 2009 11:57 PM
Hey Peter,
Any chance they'd go after Brooks? I think a lot of O's fans would love to see/hear Mr. Orioles...
Posted by: Dave | December 19, 2009 2:21 AM
Peter,
What about Rick Dempsey and Tom Davis. You can't get more knowledgable about the game than the Demper and Tom. I think they make a great pair. Just promote the both of them.

If we're going to have Gary Thorne call the game, we should get Bill Clement to do color. Even though he's a "hockey guy", they work brilliantly together, and baseball is a slow, easy game to understand. They'd do great!!

Posted by: GARY | December 19, 2009 8:04 AM
GARY- I think John Buren is touring the country with Kenny Loggins at "Six-Pack" conventions.
Did that guy do something horrible or something? He has disappeared off the face of the Earth, less a website he started but nothing has happened with.
Posted by: SHAMROCK | December 19, 2009 8:55 AM
How about Erin Andrews? She can talk about nail polish , hair ties and Tim Tebow for all I care. Just as long as the do a Picture-in-picture box of her in the corner of the screen.
For all Dempsey knows, he can't articulate it worth a darn. Tom Davis is a grouch. I could see him complaining that the pitcher is taking too long coming to the plate cutting into him eating off air. Kinda like the way he bosses around callers on the radio. And who exactly names you "Five Time Maryland Sportscaster of the Year?"
If Andrews is too busy trying to shack up with wealthy college coaches, I vote for Dave Johnson.

Pete,
Flanagan was horrible the last time as announcer, pitching coach and GM. His only contribution was as a player, get over it!
Billy Ripken is a punk with a foul mouth. No one with the exception of the Baldwin brothers have lived a longer career off their older brother than Billy Ripken! Let's move forward and not lanquish is the Billy Ripken era past!
Ken Singleton is a professional and would be a nice compliment. The Tractor would be a great choice as well. Other good candidates for consideration might be Steve Phillips (of ESPN fame) or even the great tandum of Joe and Fred moving to TV.
I haven't liked our announcers since Jon Miller left. Dempsey talks too much and adds little value. Jim Palmer would lead you to believe he hit for the triple crown, won 900 games and after 21 years playing and 20+ announcing he still doesn't know that a tie is NOT awarded to a runner, but then again why should our announcers be any better than the product on the field.
I believe the Warehouse has taken the philosophy of the imfamous former Washington Redskin Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier, who when asked why the DeadSkins were signing all of the former University of Florida wide receivers, "Because they are Cheap and available"! The O's have maximized this philosophy the last 13 years! As I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and holidays, the words of our less than mediocre former General Manager, Roland Hemond come to mind, 'They act like we have confederate dollars"!
Only hoping 2010 reflects a greater committment to success than the last 13 years! You get what you pay for!

Tonight, Let it be Lowenstein!
Posted by: Kurt | December 19, 2009 10:08 AM
I agree with the Thorne must go opinions. It's like he's not even watching the game. Why can't someone tell him to NEVER EVER give the pitch location. When he says low and outside it's always high and away or vice versa. If he call's it a curve you know it was a fastball. And who ever heard of a 3 RBI homer? It's a 3 run homer you hockey geek...But if you listen to him do ESPN games on the radio he's great, cause you can't see all of his mistakes. As for Buck Martinez, good ridence, if I had to listen to that cheezy FM DJ voice one more minute. Go do a morning zoo somewhere. What ever happened to the days of Chuck Thompson and Bill O'Donnell or even the more recent past of Mel Proctor and Brother Lo.
Posted by: David | December 19, 2009 10:11 AM
Listening to Brady with Jerry Coleman on 1370 am FOX sports is one of the BEST parts of my drive home each week!! , the guy is down to earth, insightful AND is MORE current! Grab him Pete!

Anybody but Anita Marks.I have to change my favorite radio station when she is on the air now!
Posted by: Bigdog | December 19, 2009 10:26 AM
John Lowenstein was hilarious-usually unintended- as a colorman, especially when he was being baited by Palmer.Whatever happened to Lowenstein?
Posted by: Bootz Mercer | December 19, 2009 10:49 AM
Someone nailed it above...the O's are too cheap.
1. Singy is a pro. NY is paying him top dollar so he won't come here. Love to have him though.
2. Billy Ripken would need to take a huge paycut. Bill and brother Cal fleece money off all the Ripken Baseball little leaguers of America. That and his voice, which sounds like he's always talking with a mouth full of food. No thanks.
3. Flanagan. Isn't Angelos still paying him 7 figures to get his coffee and souvlaki?
4. Tom Davis? Are kidding me. Mr. Giggles would be pathetic. He's the Ed McMahon of Balto radio.
5. Dempsey. He have to blow into one of those sobriety gadgets they have in cars.
I say maximize Palmer to the fullest, get BJ Surhoff or someone who knows the game and has a history with the franchise, let Benny Ayala do sunday games, and have Lenn Sakata available for emergency/late inning duty.
Posted by: Rob K. | December 19, 2009 11:01 AM
I'll throw B. J. Surhoff's name into the mix. He's local, personable and has a great baseball mind.
Posted by: Jay F. | December 19, 2009 12:13 PM
As much as I love Brooks, you guys obviously don't remember his previous stints as color man. I couldn't WAIT to hear him pronounce Juan Beniquez every game ;-)
Brother Lo gets my vote, although I do like the suggestion of Millar.
Posted by: jed3d | December 19, 2009 12:47 PM
Millar would go to NESN for any job before even thinking about signing on to MASN.
Posted by: The Nation | December 19, 2009 2:04 PM
Pete,
I vote for Annonymous! He could fire DT between pitches, outs and innings! Much like are recent additions on the field being stop gap, so is our manager so we might as well sign a stop gap announcer!
Posted by: Keith Rowe | December 19, 2009 2:10 PM
The kind of favors she does to keep her job at The Fan. Ask Bob Phillips about them, he knows.
Posted by: Will B | December 19, 2009 2:46 PM
Singleton didn't fit in, in the Bronx? 12 years is a pretty long time not to fit in yet still be there. I've always liked him when I've had the chance to listen to his game calls.
Agree on Flanagan's nasal voice. Already had enough of his analyzing every home run, and every pitch, the same exact way.
Tom Davis has forgotten more than some people know about Baltimore sports, but all that means is - he forgets and gets a lot of things factually wrong. That and the giggles.
Dempsey - the postgame show gives me as much as I can take of him.
Brother Low or Brooks would suit me fine.
Posted by: steve | December 19, 2009 3:00 PM
No Flanagan, please.Once was enough.
Posted by: herb | December 19, 2009 3:37 PM
Brady Anderson would be FANTASTIC!!
Posted by: Mike in Chicago | December 19, 2009 3:53 PM
I agree. Brady Anderson would be a good choice.
Posted by: Dequincey | December 19, 2009 4:04 PM
I'd love to see Flanny in the booth again...something tells me we’ll be needing his comic relief this coming season? Like to see Palmer with Flanagan they did some good games together.
Posted by: Kenn | December 19, 2009 4:07 PM
Don't get me wrong. I love Brooks, but he couldn't keep track of how many outs there were a decade or so ago w/Chuck Thompson. I don't think he would have gotten better with age. I love him, but I will need someone to keep me awake. I haven't heard much of Ken Singleton, but that sounds better than Brooks.
Posted by: dacoitdan | December 19, 2009 5:18 PM
Mike Preston...he'd be perfect, even if he doesn't know a thing about baseball. He doesn't know a thing about football either but that's never stopped him.
He could do the jobs of both Trembley and Thorne while endlessly going on about the lack of team chemistry in the clubhouse because of the new batboy.
Posted by: Ed D... | December 19, 2009 6:45 PM
My best guess is that the popular Lowenstein lost the job last time because he made too many sexist cracks about women in the stands, etc. (Funny as hell, but sexist.)
If somebody could tone him down a little and warn him off that stuff, he'd be perfect!
Posted by: gradyjerome | December 19, 2009 8:09 PM
Pete,
I am still convinced Flanny has pics of Angelos somewhere. I get his history with the team, but its ok to not have him on the payroll.
Love the idea of Billy being the color guy just please take the microphone away from Dempsey PLEASE!
Posted by: Denny | December 21, 2009 10:02 AM
Brother Lo was the best, but since it doesn't sound like they're talking to him, I suppose I need to lower my expectations. Neither Bill Ripken nor Brady sound very appealing to me. Singleton would be nice because at least he's a veteran broadcaster. Please not Dempsey!
