Going Sideways
Jeff is doing such a good job keeping everybody up to date on the Orioles that I'm starting to worry that you might not miss me, so I thought I'd pop in and give you an update from not-so-sunny Southern California. I'm not going to just come right out and tell you why I'm here, but there are two clues in this post -- one verbal and one visual -- that will give you an idea of what's going on here.
I'm on vacation, of course, but the notion -- spread by some of my coworkers -- that I go on vacation every month is slightly exaggerated. This is a special holiday trip in which we (my wife and I) are visiting some places that we never experienced while we lived here. In some cases, we're finding out why. I do enjoy traveling the backroads and checking out the odd roadside attraction, and this particular location would certainly qualify.
Just want to point out that no matter where I go these days, I'm plugging the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Maryland Special Olympics. Check out the jacket in the accompanying photo.
Okay, back to the subject at hand. From the small handful of clues provided here, I want you to tell me exactly where I am in the picture and the significance of it.

Are you at Ostrich Land in Buellton?

Pete's Reply: Bingo! Great call.

Ooh, i got it! You're at Ostrich Land because that's the place Thomas Haden Church ran across naked in Sideways... "Those (schmuck)ers are mean!"

This is Birdland! Well, probably not as you're on the left coast. I'm guessing you're visiting, or got put in, a zoo. I'll stick my neck out here and bet that there's zero chance that any of those ostriches, or a polar bear, plunges into that dish you're holding.

To directly answer your question:
You are on the right hand border of the picture. This is significant so those viewing it can see what
would otherwise be behind you.

Bet ya that chick's two tons of fun. You know, the grateful type?

Pete--Looks like you're traveling with Dick Hall, Randy Johnson, and Mark Hendrickson and are getting ready for the 7th race at Swiss Family Robinson Park.
Quite a post parade.

Pete,
I do the plunge most years... I don't sleep the week prior, but I always feel great afterwards. I recommend it for anyone - but please be sure your heart can take it....
As for being away... Pete, it doesn't! There is nothing to write about unless you want to analyze what other teams have done. Of course you can always write about the Ravens. They're relevant 12 months a year.
You can be gone another few months Pete, and you will have missed nothing important when it comes to the O's.
Safe travels!

Good photo! Don't let McFail see it though, he'll take a chance on one or two of those long neckers to see if they can sling it cheap. All part of the plan.

If you are doing the Sideways tour, you have to take your wife to Los Olivos Cafe (aka The Wine Merchant) in Solvang. The food is fantastic and so is the wine and service. Plus, you'll recognize it from the book/movie.

Ostriches? Nah, You're clearly at the Geico Gecko Farm at the edge of San Gorgino Pass, below the San Andreas Fault. And it's the peak of earthquake season!!!

As are The Orioles, you are lost in the wilderness. And you are no longer going to feed the rumors that Macphail is actually going to stick his neck out, spend some money, and sign some big name talent. All we have gotten so far from Andy is Birds**t.
Either that or Angelos is looking to save more money and you are visiting The Orioles new mascot. He won't have to send it a 1099.

ET, phone home! Pete, sorry to see you've had to resort to panhandling from space aliens for airfare back to BWI. Don't worry--I'm sure things will pick up once baseball season starts.

They gave Pete lessons on how to get his head back out of the sand it looks like.
If only I can find a way to bury my head back in the sand for when Pete and Wayne do the plunge. Yikes!
Kidding. Anyway, have a good one Pete.

pete,
buelton is the central coast, not so cal. big difference.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, it's in the bottom 175 miles of an 800-mile-long state, so it is -- technically -- Southern California, no matter how the locals want to separate themselves from LA.
Posted by: johnnnyg | December 15, 2009 10:01 PM
Yes, that's the central coast, not So. Cal and you are doing research on the technique we Oriole Fans have to do every year, usually by July, ie bury our heads in the sand!
In the vaccum left by your absence, here's a quote from Bobby Jones, Mngr of the Braves, after seeing Adam LaRoche make a serious impact on his team by hitting .344 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in his first 42 games with the Braves. "When Roachy has an opportunity to drive in runs, he's going to take advantage," Jones said. "You're talking about a guy who could hit 30 home runs in a pitcher's ballpark. That's an impact player."
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It's both. That's Bobby Cox, but I see where you're going. Let's see if Andy MacPhail was listening.

I'll guess and say the Neverland ranch and then on to MJ's gravesite.haha

OK. It's out. MLBTR is reporting that the Red Sox are working very hard to acquire Adrian Gonzales.
Macphail can NOT let that happen.
He can say he doesn't pay attention to what the other teams are doing, but he better start.
If the Sox get AG, then I don't care how many prospects we draft, or what we do, we will NEVER compete in the AL East. It will be another 12 seasons.
The O's HAVE to step up here and block this. They don't even have a choice.
I know Macphail is going to the commissioners office in 2 years, but I pray he doesn't kill any chance we have of winning before he does.
All of what he has done up to this point will all be wasted if the Sox get Gonzales after getting Lackey and Cameron.
There would be no point to even playing the games anymore, when you look at how loaded the Yanks and Red Sox are, one of those 2 teams will win it every year REGARDLESS of what we do.
This isn't even about money. To lock him up AFTER the 2011 season, but for the next 2 years, its just 10 million total.
All Macphail has to do is pull the trigger.
I don't even see that the O's have an option. Unless we want to keep going 3-15 against those 2, which the franchise can't handle because the last of the fans will go and the team will just have to move.
I pray to GOD that Macphail gets it. This is a MUST. This isn't even an opinion. I can't stress it enough.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I like your sense of urgency here. I doubt that Andy shares that, but if Gonzalez is available, I agree the Orioles should be on the phone. Of course, the fact that the Red Sox are interested (who wouldn't be) doesn't mean that anything is going to happen. Boston is the trade rumor capital of the world. But when teams like the Red Sox and Yankees set their collective minds to things, they tend to get what they want.
Posted by: Ryan | December 16, 2009 10:49 AM
Ryan,
Calm down, fix yourself a stiff drink and enjoy the Holidays. Macphail is working the plan, slowly, and deliberatlely for Mr. Angelos. The plan is to lose, lose, lose lose, lose... while the remaining loyal suckers proudly wave their last place Oriole Pennants and sream"O" in the middle of the National anthem.
Posted by: Meep Meep | December 16, 2009 10:59 AM
I guessed wrong. I thought this was a picture of you at some sort of Balt Sun writer's meeting.

Ryan -
Unfortunately for the 28 other teams interested in Adrian Gonzalez, Jed Hoyer, the Padres current GM, is former Red Sox assistant.
With that in mind, you've got to assume that he knows their players and prospects better than those from any other team, and may be more inclined to trade for prospects that he's more familiar with.
I do agree with you that the Orioles need to stop this from happening, whether that means acquiring Gonzalez themselves or serving as the middle man in a three team deal.
As far as our prospects go, if it would bring in Gonzalez's proven power bat and solid defense, I wouldn't mind sending a package headlined by Josh Bell and Jake Arrieta or Chris Tlllman. I'd imagine that would at least be on par talent wise (but not results wise) with Boston's Clay Buchholz/Jacoby Ellsbury package.
Interesting Stat: After moving from Arlington to DeathCo, Gonzalez's slugging % has gone up each year since '06, from .500 to .502 to .510 to .551. His slugging % on the road last season was .643.

Sammy Stewart will be paroling soon, and Wayne Garland wants to be an Oriole now!
Posted by: Anonymous | December 16, 2009 1:04 PM
Enough with the Adrian Gonzalez talk.
What the Padres would want - a couple of the Kiddie Korps pitchers who are making up the core of the rebuilding process - is too much for us to give up for a two year rental.
Let's stick with the plan.

I think I 28-year-old slugging first baseman with an excellent glove fits pretty well into the plan.
