Terps loss tough to watch

The Maryland Terps were in position to salvage some respectability with a road victory over Florida State today, but played it too safe at a critical juncture in the fourth quarter and ended up on the wrong end of a very painful finish.

The Terps score a touchdown to take a four-point lead with abouit four minutes left and made a big interception to get the ball right back at about midfield. If they had been able to get a first down or two, they might have been able to burn enough clock to hold on. Instead, they played if very conservative on the first two plays of the possession and ended up leaving the Seminoles with plenty of time to come back and score the winning touchdown.

It was just too early to get that defensive. The Seminoles had all their timeouts left at that point and -- with the first-down clock stops in the NCAA -- the Terps barely got any time off the clock.

It certainly didn't help that Maryland's attempt to pin Florida State deep evaporated in a flurry of missed tackles on the punt return that allowed the Seminoles to start with a very short field. It also didn't help when Maryland's three-man rush on that final drive could not contain quarterback E.J. Manuel, who broke off two big runs to set up the winning score.

Just been that kind of year.

Maryland is just trying to play its way into the Ivy league.

Pete-
You don't comment on MD much, Freidgen has been killing this team for 3 seasons now.
They just can NOT get a QB or any consistent playmakers on defense.
He built the program, so I guess its his to tear back down.
Or, is it the Ghost of Vanderlindin, ooooooooo, ooooooooo, BOOOO!!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You're right. I don't comment on Maryland much, but it was Florida State and they were on the verge of a much needed victory. I felt bad for the team and for Fridge. It would have taken a little of the sting out of this horrible season.

Ryan - the QB wasn't the issue today, it was his second start and he played well.

This is a young squad which has also had a number of injuries.

The future...Jamarr Robinson, this game was classic and it was easy to watch, they almost pulled the upset, it reminded me of the Raven's defeating Dallas to close Texas Stadium. It would have ruined Mickey Andrews' day. Fridge, he saved your job, Franklin lost this game by not being aggressive at the end. The future looks bright.

the coaching for md. at the end of the game was terrible. on fl. st's next to last drive maryland uses its prevent defense, 3 man line and drops everyone else deep. no pass rush, no defensive players anywhere near the line and manual runs for big chunks of yds. the interception caused by a fl st receiver running the wrong route gives md great field position, but, peter as you said, we played it way to conservative. md stays in the prevent on fl st last drive and it prevents md from winning. on md's last drive, 25 seconds on the clock one time out ball on their own 24 and needing to get to at least the fl st.33-35 yd line md runs a 6 yd curl pattern to a receiver that does not have good speed. horrible call.poor coaching by md. may the schmuck be with you.

It's time for a new refrigerator. This one has gone sour.

FIRE THEM ALL!!

Jeez, where to start?

The obvious first: WIth dozens of games lost during his tenure by dint of his "play not to lose" one-trick pony, Friedgen et al go right back to the pain of doing what has rarely succeeded. In a way, the offensive coaching staff are like substance abusers--they feel they have to quit the monkey on their back, but they just can't.

Next, in a rather jawdropping article about Friedgen, we Washington Post readers learned that he had to pay the whole plane fare ticket for the whole team on two occasions. WTF? It's just that bad in Maryland athletics, and it points--like the ghost of Christmas past--to Debbie Yow. What's even more unsettling is that she'd let him pay not once, but twice!

That $tadium...when combined with THAT football program. You had to know disaster was just around the bend.

The loss of coverage on Maryland's own version of a podunk television station: MASN. If you can't get coverage on MASN you truly need to do some soul-searching; the only thing left is ESPN 360.

I like Ralph, and I think he would do better if he had more support, especially in the recruiting arena, but the athletic director waited too long to do anything other than to hang him out to dry for her sins.

Yet this result should be no surprise, since this is the history of Maryland University's approach to hiring staff, professors and coaches: they're misers.

When will teams learn that when they have inferior athletes they can't rush 3. The prevent has cost many a game. I contest more than they have saved. The underdog Terps had teh game in their hands and chose to play not to lose. Way to go.

Good luck to you Fridge. But then, with your resume, you should have no trouble finding a job you are qualified for.

No pete it's been that KIND of YEAR 4 out of the last 5 years. I am surprised you didn't come out in your post and tell everybody how ralph deserves another chance and how he took this team from ashes and made them what they are today LOUSY. Lousy is what they are today and the blame falls on ralph's shoulders and debbie yow better do the right thing and fire him despite being owed 2 more years on his contract. Md has never been this bad and there shouldn't be any more free passes given for something that happened back in 2001 2002 with other coaches recruits. The lack of recruiting has become a joke with walk on's having to play because they have no depth at some positions. He flat out needs to be fired.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Bob, if you could, you'd fire everybody. I don't like Ralph's chances right now, but if he does get fired, I hope you'll at least give him a nod for the three or four good seasons he had here. Other than that, I don't remember all that much to cheer about since I got here in 1990.

I only saw the last 10 minutes and what really stood out is how lousy the Terps tackling fundamentals are. Those last few plays saw too many D backs wavimg at runners like butterfkies. The game was lost not on conservative play but total inability to keep runners in the grasp.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The three missed tackles on the punt return were probably the whole story.

Pete, from your perspective you think that i want everybody fired. From my perspective when any organzation or team hires a coach at a great salary it's his responsibilty to perform . In college parents trust that there kids are going to be takin care of and that all promises are going to be met. Ralph has let this school down and the alummi down by allowing this team to become even less competive then duke.Pete ralph has gotten more support from the athletic department than any other md coach. If Bobby ross had that same support and backing md might have won a national championship. Ralph couldn't hold the clip board that bobby ross used.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm not disagreeing with you on Ralph. I don't think he has recruited well enough and the team has floundered. Three years in, everybody thought he was a genius, but the bloom is off the rose. However, I've been posting with you for awhile, and you've got a very short fuse when it comes to coaches and managers.

For those of you who made it to Tallahassee, thanks for coming down. I hope that you had a good time. Losing is tough to bear, FSU fans can definitely empathize. We have been repeatedly humbled over the last decade mostly due to poor, poor coaching. Maryland is a classy school, you guys will improve next year. I can only say that I hope we do as well.

What's with the coaching on Maryland football teams, pro and college? They always go too conservative at the end of games,it seems, and play not to loose.Lack of confidence and/or no innovation to take the fight to their opponents late in their games is almost a pattern here.It was painful,Pete, but I picked them to lose by a bigger score and the team looked real div.1 to me yesterday.

Schadenfreudianslip - The MASN Network has nothing to do with Maryland or the ACC. ESPN has the broadcast rights to the ACC.

So point the finger at the ACC as a whole or ESPN. If ESPN decides not to broadcast a given game, other are allowed to bid (Raycom for instance), otherwise they put it on ESPN360 if there are no takers.

MASN doesn't have exclusive bid rights on the ACC, but they do get some of the Big East, Pac-Ten, and the FCS games.

Under this current Head Coach, the Terps will never win recruiting wars with any respectable team & that's why Penn State walks right into Maryland every year & takes the cream of the crop without even thinking these kids just may want to stay home.
Let's see, Penn St. or Maryland...hmmm. One goes to the best bowls every year & one is ready for the Toilet Bowl. Great job Ralphie, you win with someone else's recruits & can't win 3 games with your own. By the way, James Madison would win by 10 if you played them again.
Turn the lights off on your way out.....the state is trying to save money.
