Sorry, if you're that sensitive, you don't belong here
You know what. There's a time to take yourself seriously and a time when it's okay to joke around about stuff. I took a sideways poke at the Obama "birther" thing yesterday and a lot of people came out the woodwork to complain about how inappropriate it was to make a "snide" comment about the whole Obama birth certificate controversy in a sports blog.
Lighten up.
I've seen the Honolulu newspaper birth annoucement for President Obama. I know the birth certificate thing is silly. I was basically saying that with that wise crack, but there are a lot of people out there who are so consumed with their politics that they assume everything has some greater meaning or some evil intent. And there are a few who just don't have the gene that allows them to filter sarcasm.
It was a joke. There are going to be more. Laugh or don't laugh. Read this blog or don't. I'll also poke at Sarah Palin and Nancy Pelosi if I think I can get a quick laugh. If you can't handle that, you have my permission to move on.
I don't think politics or baseball is a religion and I'm not going to tiptoe around people who are too sensitive for their own good. I watched the Saturday Night Live skit the other night that was brutal to Obama and thought it was very funny. I also watched months of brutal SNL stuff on Sarah Palin and thought it was hilarious. It's great to see the humor on both sides of the aisle. You get double the fun. Some of you -- and you know who you are -- ought to try it some time.

Well, when I sit on my front porch I can see................
the other side of the street.
BTW Peter - baseball IS a religion.
Now all of the political nuts will be replaced by the religious nuts on this blog. :(

Here, here, Pete. I'm so sick of the Obamapologists and their holier than thou idol worship that I could just scream. The same folks that thought it was hilarious to see Bush depicted as a chimp now hold the POTUS as untouchable. SNL was not only dead on, but actually funny for once. Keep the equal opportunity humor coming.

What!!!? The birth certificate thing is silly?!!! You are nuts sir!!! This is for real and we should, enmasse, storm the White House and throw that forgeiner out of it!!!! Since you think it's "silly" maybe we should throw you out of here also!!! NUTS Sir, yes, NUTS!!!!
For those not thinking properly, this is meant as a joke, I don't support overthrowing our government except by the election booth.

I thought the Constitution guaranteed separation of sports and state. And can we finally retire the 7th inning God Bless America? We're all for the red, white, and blue but it really cuts back on Thank God I'm a Country Boy.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Bob, funny you should bring that up. I just wrote a quick Four Corners item about which sports tradition I would get rid of, and I briefly considered putting the kibosh on the "God Bless America" thing. Not because I don't like the song or the sentiment. Of course, I think it's great. But I have a problem with a corporate CEO (Bud Selig) ordering me to be patriotic. If teams want to play it, that's fine, and I'll stand up (because I want to), but when the Yankees tried to force people to stay in their seats for it, that was over the top. I mean no disrespect to Selig, who certainly meant well when he decided to do that after 9/11, but we already have the anthem (which we all bought into a long time ago). The rest of my patriotism is my business.

Don't you know that if you say anything negative about Obama that you are a racist?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I guess it's fortunate, then, that I didn't say anything negative about Obama.

In keeping with humorous intent:
If you are not suspicious of a man who hides his history I have a bridge in the desert I want to sell you.
If you are unwilling to call for an investigation of a man who attempts to sell you a bridge in the desert I have some beach front property in Florida at the intersection of I75 and Florida # 29 that I want you to buy.
If you place a down payment on a contract for the bridge in the desert and the beach front property in the swamp I would conclude that you voted for Obama.
Can you pass the: Obama Eligibility Logic Test?

Somehow, you know its coming. That OMG moment is just around the corner. You can feel the inescapable reality creeping up on you. Something will leak. Someone will spill the beans.

Pete's reply: As I said, some people are taking this way too seriously. I was making a joke about my friend Roch, not starting a new political blog.
Posted by: Sam Sewell | November 25, 2009 12:48 PM
REALLY? You've actually gone to Hawaii and pulled up the archive of the paper and seen it yourself, with your own two eyes? WOW! Impressive.
If this is not the case, then you have NOT actually seen the birth announcement. The fact has been uncovered that Team Obama did not discover or dig up those birth announcements. They originated on a BLOG of all places, picked up by Team Obama and touted as proof!
LOL - typical of Mr. Transparency, wouldn't you say?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: He's the president so you might want to get over it. During the 1950s and '60s, everybody's birth announcement was published in the local papers. Obama's is in the Honolulu papers on the date after his birth. Do you actually think somebody went back and altered all the papers from the early 1960s in all the libraries in Hawaii? Or worse, planted it there way back then because they were planning this all along? No, I didn't go there myself and go to the library, but others have. I guess they're all in on it, too.

Pete...
you basically did the equivalent of questioning global warming, but on a Presidential level... better watch out. Your resignation will be called for by days end.
the initial Palin stuff, it was pretty funny. The latter when she proved to be a threat, disgusting.
Its all fun and games until a liberal is satirized.... GOBBLE GOBBLE!!!
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I have to admit, I was surprised, since it was a total offhand wise crack. No real political intent was intended, though I suspected I'd get a few true believers after me. Funny thing is, now I've got both the birthers and the anti-birthers on my case.

Pete:
If you don't mind this observation from a Canadian, one who has much respect and admiration for the US, it seems as those politics in your country has become a blood sport.
The same thing is happening in my country, although to a lesser extent. People can't simply have opposing and honestly held opinions, they are attacked and labelled morons and worse. Jokes can't be told about anyone on the other side of the political divide without vitriolic responses.
Woe to all of us if this doesn't change.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I agree wholeheartedly. It's funny, but when I was traveling to Toronto regularly, I made a couple of friends there and both were totally on the other side of the political spectrum from me, but we always had fun with that and never had a cross word among us. If only it were so everywhere.

BTW, you haven't shown us your birth certificate yet. Those flowered shirts don't fool anyone. What are you hiding Schmuck?
Posted by: riverside | November 25, 2009 1:51 PM
It is not about Obama and the birth certificate. This is still a fundamental problem with the Democratic National Committee and their failure to vet Obama. They tried to cover it with Obama posting a picture of a birth certificate to the internet. Go look at the two versions that Pelosi signed of the statement of qualification for Obama. One says he is qualified, the second version takes out that language. Guess which on they used.
The failure of the press on this is jaw dropping. By the way there was a break-in at the passport office and Obama's passport records were cleansed. One of the suspects that was cooperating with police was found shot in his car. The owner of the company that employed the individuals that did the cleansing has close ties to Obama. Lots of coverage on that.
This entire process stinks and the press continues to ignore the failure of the democratic party to vet Obama.
The issue of the original birth certificate that states the name of the hospital, doctors that made the delivery and any witnesses is still a valid question required in the vetting process.

Funny that an argument over a guy's birth certificate is going on among a bunch of people who are using fake names on the internet...
PS - This one was classic, Pete:

Pete, now that you've gone and turned your sports blog into a political blog, and since we now have Jon Runyon running for Congress and Curt Schilling running for...something, wouldn't it be great theatre if Ray Lewis became the Mayor of Baltimore and Cal Ripken the Governor of Maryland?
Posted by: richabbs | November 25, 2009 2:32 PM
Hi! You are very cute and attractive and like many women this time of year in Vermont, we consider sport to be luring those out-of-state drunk hunters with beer cans into our cabins. O.K., some of us cheat and put on antlers.
Now, the reality of the Obambi situation is his campaign put out a birth certificate that has, in tiny fine print in the lower right hand corner, an HRS (Hawaii Revised Statutes Code) which PROVES IT WAS AMENDED. WE WANT TO SEE THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION SO WE WILL KNOW WHAT WAS AMENDED.
Workers' have a federal "right to know" under 29 CFR 1910.1200 about chemicals they are exposed to at work.
We, the People, have a "right to know" under the U.S. Co, nstitution about the President's birth.
An Amended birth certificate may mean that he was born the biological son of Frank Marshall Davis, who was married at the time to someone other than Obama's biological mother and she may have had it amended after her first marriage.
We just want to know, so that anyone else who has had this happen to them can say, "Guess what I have in common with the President?" Lots of people don't know who their birth father is, or their mother wrote something else down or had something amended. All we are doing is trying to "SEE" the HUMANITY, the HUMAN-NESS in the President. Bring him down to "homie" level, show he's no better than anyone else, BECAUSE every little boy and girl may want to grow up to be President, no matter how sordid their parents behaviour was!!!

CRIS, in the immortal words of Antonin Scalia, SCOTUS Justice, when asked about the problems with the 2000 Bush v Gore election:

Personally, I'm more concerned about the O's need at 1B and 3B and the Ravens inability to play pass defense this year.

Personally, I'm getting really fed up with the masses using the "I'm offended" or the "inappropriate" card.
Pete, you handled it nicely. I would have told those people exactly where they could put their "inappropriate" BS card.
Long live FREE SPEECH and the right/ability to articulate ourselves!!!!! If someone is offended, then that is their problem!!!!!!

Guess what everyone? I'm a huge fan of Peter Schmuck, Roch Kubatko, Mike Preston and Bruce Cunningham! There's my freedom of speech. Go ahead haters, crucify me just for mentioning names. If you're offended by my buddy Pete, maybe you have too much time on your hands. Turn off Oprah and CNN news and form your own opinions. Pete, I appreciate your wit and flowered apparel. I served four years so I could keep hearing it. Keep it coming.

Dear Sally Hill,
As you can tell by my moniker, yes, I live in Hawaii. In fact, I even used to work at the Star-Bulletin (in the classifieds department even). And yes, I've seen the paper with the announcement.
Your argument holds no water. Please, focus your energies on more useful endeavors.
Thanks.
Ps - No, I haven't been using this moniker for all this time with the agenda that this subject might eventually come up and I could rebuke your silliness with some geographical advantage.

Glad to read your latest words, Peter.
I can now assume that you've made up your mind about Carlos Delgado and feel, as I do, that he should just "move on".
There is no better example I can think of which depicts someone who takes himself AND his politics waaaaay too seriously.

Pete,
You have done some really funny stuff on the blog. My favorite was the one you titled "This season has been so long that"...I went back into the archives and read the responses a while back and some were absolutely priceless.
Since you routinely couch statements with tongue in cheek, ther only thing I can think of is that the posters who became hysterical over the birth certificate humor must have missed the other two thousand in which you poked fun at nearly everything that moved.
As I said earlier, some people must scour the internet googling anything that remotely might offend them so that they can express their righteous indignation.
Keep up the good work Pete, and keep your blogs sprinkled with lighthearted banter. You may never headline at the Comedy club but maybe some of those who were insulted will discover the healing power of laughter.

Pete's reply: Thanks Gil. Hope you -- and everybody here -- has a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I don't know if he is really native born but I do have one observation to share....I have tried to remember if I have ever heard, even just once, Obama speak proudly about America.I can't remember and I try to pay attention.....it seems to me this guy doesn't love America and regardless if he is native born or not, that should disqualify him as the legitimate president of the country.....I, for one, think the president should love the country....I believe that he hates this country and is hell bent on destroying its culture, institutions along with its economic and political system...imo....on a different note, Mr. Schmuck...I enjoy your witty humor and don't let haters who don't have a life get to you....

Chris from Hawaii worked in the classified department of a Hawaiian newspaper, so he's an expert qualified to authenticate Obama's legitimacy? Yesterday, after expressing his political opinion, he wrote that I had no right to express mine, because this was an Oriole blog. I can guarantee you that I don't believe something just because it was in the paper, or on TV. I was a sportswriter at the Sunpapers, and worked in the PR department of the Orioles, but I don't tell Chris he has no right to an opinion on sports or the Orioles. So, to Chris and all the other radicalibs, why don't all you leftists continue to support free speech, even when the speaker disagrees with you?

When fate speaks out and karma wins. All the fools end up ranting about things that dont matter as another person dies in a war year after year. May we all grow up and see the things that are good in all of us. In time we will have peace on earth for sure.
Posted by: Perry Peck | November 26, 2009 12:37 AM
I will be honest with you. I usually think that I understand what Americans debate about in their blogs. But this one baffles me.
What is the big deal about the birth certificate? He certainly seems born to me!! Are they saying that he is not really qualified to run for President? Isn't it a little too late for that type of discussion?
I don't fully agree with Obama's policies, but it seems like this type of discussion doesnt do anything positive to solve real problems that your country and our wolrld faces. Wouldn't we be better served to discuss issues (preferably on other blogs more appropriate for that discussion) than qualifications?
Anyway, nice joke, Peter.
Posted by: European Prof | November 26, 2009 3:04 AM
Upon further reflection (I spent the morning observing the Latvian Parliament at work while musing over this blog), if Obama were deemed not qualified, wouldn't that only mean that Biden would be President? Do conservatives really want that? Again, this really baffles me.
By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to all off my American friends. Tonight I will celebrate Thanksgiving at the house of some American friends in Riga, where we will watch live football at 7:30 pm (unfortunately the Lions). Because, ironically, I am the one with the graduate education in American history, I will give a brief synopsis of the Thanksgiving story. This has been part of my tradition now for the last several years. What a wonderful day!!

Pete (or is it Mr Schmuck?), I am a Baltimorean in exile (in New York -- I weep the whole baseball season) and read and enjoy your your blog. But I think it's OK to make Pelosi jokes, whatever they would be. After all, she's part of a great Baltimore political family, the D'Allesandros. (I may have spelled that wrong.) I was tickled when I learn that.
Anyhow you obviously pushed the button of some of the biggest nut cases in these here United States. Isn't that your job?
ps My parents told me that I was born in the Women's Wing of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The building no longer exists ... uh oh.

Yes, in fact, I do think it is sort of funny that I was accused of being racist by a dumb white buy because I did not back Obama. The person who accused me did not even know Jesse Jackson ran in 1988 he said. He is my age. Why didn't he vote for Jesse Jackson in the 88 primaries as I did? Should I have called him racist for not doing so? By the way, I voted for Cynthia McKinney. Time for a woman president, I said. Hope the well informed Obama people know who she is. They do...don't they? I hope.

You know I love the blog Pete and we have a very similar twisted sense of humor. Well I think it's normal, but my friends tell me otherwise.
I just enjoy any opportunity to poke fun at the rightgeous.
i.e. The birthers.
Oh and I enjoyed the Bush jokes as much as I do the Obama jokes. Lest we forget how any liberal was "UnAmerican" when they said anything bad about Bush post 9/11. Funny how bashing Obama is now just being "Fair and Balanced" or even more patriotic.
Couldn´t help it.
Now back to sports Pete.

Pete's reply: True enough, but if making jokes about Bush was unpatriotic, there probably aren't any patriots left.
