Ravens: How will you welcome Stover back?

mattstovergetty.jpgJust finished reading Jamison Hensley's story about new Colts kicker Matt Stover -- which you can read right here -- and it got me to wondering just what kind of reception he should get on Sunday when he trots onto the field at M&T Bank Stadium with a horseshoe on his helmet. Well, I know what kind of welcome he should get. The guy was a great player here for all of the Ravens history until this season and didn't ask out of town, so I think he should get a standing ovation. I realize that he signed with the one team Ravens fans did not want him to sign with, but the guy wanted to keep playing and that was the best opportunity. You know you would have done the same thing in his situation. I know if The Sun laid me off tomorrow and I was offered a job at the Indianapolis Star, I'd certainly have to consider it. Now, for the question. What kind of welcome will he get? And will your long-held high opinion of him change if he kicks a game-winning field goal as the clock runs out? Getty Images

Hey, he isnt a Steeler, THATS the one team I didnt want him to sign with.

I will give a standing O if he is introduced.

I will not cheer for his kicks though. If he kicks the game winner, I wont be angry with him, I'll be angry with the F/O and Harbs.

No question, standing O. Fortunately this game will not come down to a last-second FG. I'm with Schmuck, this game won't be particularly close.

I will boo Stover along with all of the other Indy players on Sunday. Stover was a great Raven, is a great person and very friendly. However, Stover plays for the enemy. Period. Every single player on Indy should be booed. Raven fans must bring their A game on Sunday since we never seem to be able to beat Indy. Indy fans should be given the same amount of respect you provide thief. None at all. The fans of Indy did nothing to encourage Irsay to change the team's name after we stole the Browns so Indy fans are no better than their prescription drug addict owner Jim Irsay.

Standing ovation, no question. And I hope he makes every FG to stick it to Harbaugh and Newsome. Although with Manning against the Ravens pass defense, I fear it will be nothing but extra point attempts for Stover all day.

I think the more interesting question will be how fans respond to the new Ravens kicker. If he makes his first FG I expect a (half-sarcastic) standing ovation for him as well, but how will the stadium respond to a miss? Will fans let loose a half-season of frustration with the kicking game and anger at the the Ravens letting Stover go by booing after just one miss? Hopefully we won't find out...

And as for which team we would have least liked to see Stover go to- I actually don't mind him going to Indy. Steelers or a division rival, or even the Patriots, would have been worse. Stover left on the best of terms- after patiently waiting for the Ravens to call all off-season while Harbaugh played out his cruel charade of a kicking competition (remember that he "had Stover on speed-dial". What a joke, he never intended to give Matt a chance). He's been loyal to this organization even since leaving and has said and done all the right things- so why not be happy for him ending up in a good situation?

Stover gets a standing -O. Manning and Irsey still get the special Baltimore version of the famous Bud Adams one-fingered salute, however.

I think we got the point beerman... after your first two posts.

I'm gonna agree with the standing ovation here. I'm gonna clap when he comes onto the field. I'm gonna clap if he misses. If he makes it, all I can do is take my seat and shake my head it the idiocy of the front office on bungling this one.

I want to cheer for him, but I can't muster any kind of enthusiasm with such a sadness over this state of affairs. I'd be happier to see Manning on the field than Stove-top in that blue and white.

Same thing I did when Trent Dilfer came back to town: a loud cheer to thank him for all he did for us. Then I will root like hell against him.

Hey Schmuck, I wouldn't mind you writing for the star. You couldn't be any worse than Kravitz.

As for this bizarre, irrational hatred for the Colts, give it a rest, already. That was 25 years ago, and you've won a Super Bowl since then. Can you imagine Michael Douglas pining for his ex-wife when he's married to Catherine Zeta-Jones? Besides, Robert Irsay is dead. Nobody on the team now had ANYTHING to do with bringing the Colts to Indianapolis.

They should have changed the name in 1984, but nothing can be done about that now.

I'm going to cheer for him. he WANTED to stay here, our front office pushed him to the side. I'm glad he is kicking well, and for a good team. I'm not old enough to hate the colts for leaving baltimore so I'm just going to enjoy what I hope to be a stellar game, between two good teams. Good Luck Stover, Good Luck.

I am SO glad that this is the big story this week, and not the tired old redredging of the Colts leaving Baltimore, blah, blah, blah. We love the Ravens and only want to beat the Colts. As Billy Ripken said yesterday, "The Colts are going down, down, DOWN!"

For almost 10 years the only offense the Ravens had was Matt Stover and Jamal Lewis. How can you not give him a standing O. I hope we crush the Colts, which would be a miracle, but No. 3 deserves a shout!!!

When introduced: YEAH!

When attempting an extra point or field goal: CHOKE!

Not to say Steve has no class (because some fans are just brought up that way), but it's great to the rest of the comments reflecting plenty of class. Hell yeah. Stover was OUR MAN!!!
Standing O all the way.

I won't be at the game, but I would hope Ravens fans would be classy enough to cheer for Matt. It's not like he didn't want to be here. The front office made that decision for him. I wish Matt all the luck in the world, except this Sunday.

I will always root for Matt Stover. This man has my respect as a man of morals, decency and character. Today's athlete should look to Stover on how to conduct themselves.

I hate to say this but I'm quite perplexed by some of the decisions that have been made this year. I was telling people before the start of the season, that the worst of the Ravens decisions would be letting Stover go.

I would love to know who's decision it was ? I have an idea who it was, and he's doing a lot of double talk these days. Matt is not 25 anymore, but I would still take him over most of the current NFL kickers.

It was a classless act to show this man the door after so many great years in Baltimore. This goes along with the Colts leaving Baltimore, Davey Johnson being fired after the 1997 wire to wire season and Trent Dilfer being shown the door after winning the Super Bowl.

I urge Mr. Biscotti and Ozzie to make this wrong right by bringing Matt Stover back home where he belongs. Lets hope it will happen in a few weeks from now. "Money Matt" is a Raven !

If they introduce him He will get what he deserves from the Ravens Fans. A Standing Ovation, I gave it to Dilfer because he deserved it. I will give it to Stover also. These two men made a difference and were cut with not so much as a walk on the field ceremony for the fans, This is our biggest chance to say Thank You. Will they cut Ray Lewis during the off season and that will be the end of his time as a Raven. Great players deserve better.

Standing O for Matt. Remember when our last coach wanted to do the same thing? BB tried to get rid of Matt too when he first got here. He only gets 30 seconds from me tho, after tht he will be just another horsefoothead to me.

Nothing but great memories of Stover...especially at training camp. He took the time to chat with me for a few minutes while signing a Superbowl XXXV football I acquired after the game. On that ball he took the prime real estate as not too many others players took the time to provide an autograph, let alone a little conversation.

CHEERS for Matt Stover!

Just don't kick a game winner...

MAYBE if he has the opportunity and he really still loves Baltimore and the Ravens, maybe he'll shank a kick or two for us!

@ Boat for Sale

Are you serious? You obviously aren't from B-More, and know nothing about how/why/when OUR Colts left. If you knew ANYTHING about it, you would understand why we still have extensive hatred for those imposters wearing horseshoes.

As for the topic, I will surely stand and cheer for Stover in section 126 when he steps on the field. Then root against him during the game.

Stover plays for the Colts now so give him a healthy boo.

yeah, what Beerman Cold Beer said!

Ok, time to stir things up a bit. I hated the fact that the Colts moved to Indy and for a couple of years I tried to not like them for it. But, I kept finding myself glancing to see how they did. In the end however, I stayed true to my Colts who in my mind will always be the Baltimore Colts no matter where they play they're games. You can't blame a team for something they're idiot owner did(hate the owner not the team). This is the same organization of Johnny U. and the rest of the boys. Now, I'm not saying you should root for them over the present Baltimore team, the Browns...I mean Ravens...But Hate...now thats an ugly word. In closing...GO COLTS!!!!
