O's: Another minor move

Some of you are already commenting on this, so I thought I'd post a link to Jeff Zrebiec and Dan Connolly's story about the signing of journeyman left-handed reliever Mike Hinckley.

It's a minor move, but looks like it might be a decent minor move. Hinckley's recent Triple-A numbers are pretty good and he has held lefties to a .161 batting average over his 28 major league appearances.

While we're doing some housekeeping here, congratulations to former bench coach Dave Jauss for catching on with the New York Mets in the same capacity he held with the Orioles.

Inconsequential signing, but I beg to differ about "pretty good" Triple-A numbers.

In Triple-A, Hinckley's walked 4.5 per nine. If you're walking that many guys, you'd better post a strikeout rate north of 10 per nine. Hinckley struck out 6.2 per nine. Ouch.

In short, this signing doesn't really matter, as it's purpose is to add another arm to the bullpen race. But, regardless of a sparkly 3.24 Triple-A ERA, Hinckley's K and BB rates, which led to a 1.57 WHIP, are pretty ugly.

I expect mostly minor moves to be made this winter.

That said, unlike most, I wouldn't mind seeing Pedro Feliz in an O's uniform in 2010.

CRAP! Missed out on Andruw Jones. And at 1/2 million bucks? Cmon Andy, get with it!

He's dong, but even 500k seems cheap for 17 dingers and however many rbis he had.

oh yeah, Happy Thanksgiving Mr. Schmuck! Eat a leg...you already tore one up.

The Orioles lose Liz, but gain Hinckley; a wash, except Hinckely is a LHP. What surprises me more is the Topps Rookie All-Star team not including Matt Weiters. Gads, who chose that team by leaving him off in favor of a "no name" catcher from the Mets?

He doesn't have a thing for Jodie Foster does he?

Pete's reply: I'm surprised it took you this long.

My "Hinckley" comment was deleted at the other Sun blog. Oh well. Norfolk should field another marginal team for me to watch two or three times.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
