« Orioles: Can they get there from here? | Main | World Series: Yankees fall over a Cliff »

The Fall Classic...

...will be over by Thanksgiving -- I promise -- but the Yankees and Phillies might cut it close if this fall continues to be as rain-soaked as it has been the past few weeks. I'm particularly sensitive to that because I've spent the day with a caulk gun filling cracks around the foundation of the house and tearing out a bunch of soggy carpet padding in the basement. Please forgive me, but I'm getting a bit nostalgic for Southern California, where they don't have either rain or basements.

If anyone has any advice in this area, I'm all ears, but I'm going to take a break from proving I'm a Renaissance man to give you my quick take on the World Series, which begins tonight at Yankee Stadium.

First off, if I knew the Yankees were going to play host, I wouldn't have rooted for the American League in the All-Star Game, because I think the home-field advantage probably will be enough to put the pinstriped pariahs over the top. Both teams have star power and both teams can hit the ball out of the park, but the Yankees may be able to neutralize the Phillies' advantage at Citizens Bank Ballpark because they have nine players who can hit a long fly ball -- and you know what happens to long fly balls in Philly.

Yankees in six.

Sorry. I don't like it any more than you do. If the Phillies win and prove me wrong, I'll promise to root for the Eagles a couple of times this year.

Personal note: I'm heading over to Chipotle Grill before the game. I have a friend who won that promotion where you get to bring nine friends for a free meal. I'm guessing not one member of the current Orioles roster shows up, but I feel an obligation to be there.

Classic, Pete, classic.

For anyone keeping score re: Pete's ruckus he previously raised ..... at least he's kept his sense of humor .
Good job Pete !

Pete,

If you go back on Saturday dressed as a burrito you can get another free burrito.

Hint get one of those silver space blankets since 1) you don't want to deplete the world's supply of aluminium foil, 2) you can pass it down the line to all your friends and 3) you can use it again next year.

Pete's reply: That's a lot of effort to save six bucks. What kind of Halloween special is Qdoba running?

Pete,
I know why most Orioles fans hate the Yankees, but why your dislike?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Dislike is the wrong word, since I liked the Joe Torre pre-ARod Yankees. I just think the whole half-billion in free agents thing last winter got under my skin. Then you throw in the Yankees fans who would act all superior if their high school team won the Little League World Series.

hey, hate is a pretty strong word. dislike, not so strong.

why do most oriole fans hate the Yankees? The usual reasons...money, success, confidence, competence, professionalism, they get the best girls...
yea, i see your point

although I think that at this time it may be a close call between the number of Oriole fans that hate the Yanks and the number of Oriole fans that actually hate the Orioles.
Straw poll anyone?

I don't hate the yanks. i don't root for them, but i don't hate them. Hey, that Kate Hudson is a real cutie...

Pete- I feel your pain in the wet/flooded basement department. As for the Yanks, well at least they don't have band wagon fans as the Phillies do. Years ago you would not be caught dead in with a Phillies cap on, unless you were in Philadelphia, were it would have just been a coincidence. But now all through central PA you see them.
As for the Yanks, well they are an analogy for America. The world hates America, but secretly they all wish they could be America. The hatred of the Yankees is in direct proportion to the suckyness of the O's. Back when the O's were good in the paleolithic era, when PA was a teen, the hatred of the Yankees was much less.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I suspect you're right, but the recent over-the-top spending has created a lot of Yankee haters, and they are not just limited to Baltimore.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
