Ravens: More Cowbell

Not sure what it is about Kevin Cowherd, but he seems to take some perverse pleasure in delivering the opposite opinion whenever I take an unassailable stand on an important local sports topic. Today's column, which you can read right here, basically is another case of Cowherd just being difficult, and you know how these disputes always turn out -- with me strutting around like Chad Ochocinco. I'm working on a special touchdown dance to do at his desk on Monday.

cowherd.jpgRemember what happened the last time he tried this. I believe he wrote that Dave Trembley would -- or should, I can't remember -- be fired at the end of the baseball season. I, of course, delivered the eloquent, winning argument that Dave should be retained, which I'm sure was the deciding factor in the club's decision to pick up the 2010 option in his contract. If that wasn't enough, Kevin and I had a video debate, which may still be floating around cyberspace somewhere, in which I had to browbeat the poor, feeble old fellow to a bloody pulp.

Obviously, he's not one of those guys who learns from his mistakes, so after I wrote that the Ravens would go into the Metrodome and toast Brett Favre and the Vikings, he comes back today with a column talking about how the Vikings won't go down quietly (sweet play on words by our headline guys, by the way) because of the noise at the Metrodome.

We'll see, but if the noise is such a big advantage there, why are the Vikes only 16-10 at home over the past three-plus seasons?

OK, to be fair, Kevin does not have a blog to defend himself, so I'll offer him this space for a rebuttal in the next day or two, and he can have a chance to dance if the Ravens all come back from Minnesota wearing hearing aids.

Free Cowherd plug: If you want to hear Kevin debate someone who has never won a sports argument in his life, check him out when he joins Jerry Coleman on the radio. Here's a link to a video of a recent show.

Farve, Noise, blah, blah, blah.

Sure, the Vikings are 5-0, but who have they played?

Cleveland: 31st in Total Offense, 29th in Total Defense

Detroit: 21st in Total Offense, 22nd in Total Defense

San Francisco: 29th in Total Offense, 16th in Total Defense

Green Bay: 14th in Total Offense, 18th in Total Defense

St. Louis: 28th in Total Offense, 23rd in Total Defense

The only semi-decent team the Vikings have played is the Packers. The rest of their opponents range between bad and horrible.

The Ravens, on the other hand, are ranked 5th in Total Offense and 10th in Total Defense.

Sorry, Minnesota, but you're about to get one in the loss column.

Wow. First Cowherd, then Coleman receive the full blade of the sharp Schmuck wit.

What's next, beating Nestor Aparicio over the head with a shovel? And if so, can THAT be posted too? Please?

Pete's reply: Sorry, I only see Nestor at the Ravens games, and they won't let me bring a shovel into M&T Bank Stadium.

That goes to show you guys really play some power house team as well..

let me see...

KC - the second worst time in NFL
Browns - Hey Vikings played them too...
Chargers - What... they just stuck somewhere in the middle with the Packers...
Lost to Patriot - .... sorry but they are as good as the 49er's at the moment...
Lost to Bengals... who I think is just as good as the Packers....

I guess... you guys played no one as well....

At least we BEAT the team we ARE suppose to BEAT UNLIKE YOUR TEAM! Come Sunday... Your team will be another team that we are suppose to beat again.. and the media will say... well.. WHO HAVE THEY BEATEN!! CORRECT! A BUNCH OF NOBODYS! INCLUDING YOUR RAVENS! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

What a SCHMUK Comment you made just made...

Oh, Pete, I just love you and Cowherd!

Pete's reply: And we love you.

A Fan... To say the Pats are as good as SF, then that you think the Bengals are as good as the Packers is just silly. You aren;t even using the same criteria when comparing.

Hey Pete,
I'm off to South Bend for USC-Notre Dame tomorrow. (I'm ND Class of '08)
I know you're a Southern Cal guy so I thought I say GO IRISH!
Enjoy the game tomorrow and Go O's!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It should be a pretty decent game this year. Have a great time...just not too great.

A Fan -

Alright, so both of our teams aren't as good as their records.

That settles it.

Is arguing about Dave Trembley's future with the O's (and/or the O's future with Trembley) really something worth crowing about? That's like arguing if zero times zero is bigger than zero plus zero.

I hope the Ravens can beat the Vikings. Both are good teams. It may come down to whether the Ravens can reverse their self-inflicted trend and/or if the Vikings can continue to overcome thier flaws that belies their perfect record. It probably won't come down to noise.

I've never been to the Humphrey Dome but I saw a baseball game at the Kingdome once. There were at most 15k fans (probably less), and it was L-O-U-D. I couldn't even imagine a Seahawk game there. It was said the quietest event ever at the Kingdome was its demolition.

Last time the Ravens played Favre, Boller led the Ravens to a 48-3 victory. Containing Peterson and schooling Favre is what I'm looking for.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
