Patriots: Brady swings back

If you get a chance later tonight, you can check out my column in which Ray Lewis goes ballistic about the lengths NFL officials are going to keep quarterbacks from getting hit in the pocket. In fact, Ray might just get hit in the pocket for speaking out publicly about the officiating in today's game.

Hard to argue with him after the damaging penalty that was called on Terrell Suggs for brushing past Brady's knee during today's game.

Brady, not surprisingly, disagrees that quarterbacks are getting a free ride, but he may have made Ray's point with his light-hearted response to the complaints by the Ravens that he -- and some other marquee quarterbacks-- get special treatment from the officials.

"Certainly not,'' he said with a smile. "Are you kidding me? They've got to find ways...We're holding the ball, we're unprotected, just sitting there defenseless, so they've got to stay away from me. They deserve to get flagged."

He clearly was having some fun at the Ravens' expense, just as he did during the game.

Get real! what other player on the field, other than maybe a receiver, under certain circumstances, can be hit from the blind side, run at full speed while standing upright with the least amount of protection (pad's, that is), other than maybe, the punter.
Plus, it is OK until your quarterback is out for the entire season. Oh, I forgot that Russel is both a cry baby and sore loser. A loser is a loser. A winner looks at what needs to be corrected (i.e., how to better cover the receivers, etc.) and less time whinning about ref's.

duckie,
Are you saying that phantom roughing the passer calls should alter the outcome of NFL football games? It wasn't apparent to me that Brady was even touched on either play- yet thanks to the officials' boundless generosity toward the Patriots both drives went from punts to TDs. If you're okay with winning that way I guess that says more about you than whoever would complain about the horrible officiating.

One would assume from the use of the word "roughing" that roughing the passer penalties would require contact, and maybe even contact that approaches the possibility of being called "rough."

It is clear that the NFL has gone much too far in these rules- to the point that any intended benefit is far outweighed by the frequent, tangible impact it has on games. The Patriots scored 14 points thanks to drives extended by overzealous roughing the passer calls- that liberal contribution by the referees in two plays exceeded what the entire Patriots offense was able to accomplish over the entire rest of the game. And it handed them the win. Those two calls negated everything the two teams did for 60 minutes- all of their effort and good competition- as well as all their preparation and hard work in getting ready for this game and this season.

Same goes for roughing the kicker penalties. When a kicker can flop at the mere sight of a would-be blocker rushing by his leg, and thereby extend his team's drive rather than handing the ball over, that is one of the largest momentum shifts that can happen on a football field. And call me crazy, but I don't think the most important, game-determining moments in any sport should be calls by the officials.

I wish one of our esteemed sportswriters would take up this case, because I do believe a huge injustice is being done to the game and its fans.

I don't know what you guys were watching, but what I saw was an intentional attempt by Terrell Suggs to take out Brady's knee. He wasn't knocked into him -- he just went right at Brady's legs. The fact that Brady was able to avoid the full impact, doesn't change what Suggs did. It was an extreme cheap shot that may even cause him to be suspended. At a minimum, you are going to see a $25,000 fine by the NFL.

Duckie is a typical Patriots fan. God forbid anything bad happens to Tom Brady. This is football. A dirty, violent game. People like you and your D-bag of an owner are diluting and pussifying (yes I just made that word up) the game.

Suggs dove at Brady's knee which Brady quickly lifted, making Suggs basically miss.It was a cheap shot, and probably will draw a fine. There were a few cheap calls.Hell, refs handed Ravens a couple so Harbaugh would stop cryin-Call against Moss was marginal..Ravens gotta grow up.

I think duckie may be Phil Sims or Jim Nantz. They said the same thing every down every play all day.

They were almost as bad as the Refs.

Next year the Brady rule will be expanded to include a 15 yard penalty if the defensive team is either insensitive or otherwise hurts little Tommy's feelings.

I can't believe that no one is talking about the lack of pass interference call on the last shot into the endzone by flacco.
last 3rd down play of the game.

Clayton could have caught that ball.
the defender wasn't playing the ball and restricted the ability to catch by placing his arm across the Clayton's.

ridiculous non call in the endzone.

Haha, pleeease tell me Neal McCarthy that you are talking about the play when Moss literally bulldozed and pushed over a Ravens CB? If you think that was marginal you're not only a hypocrite since you're whining, but also a huge homer....like most Pats fans I know. I swear half the Pats fans I know wouldn't be able to name a single player who played for the Pats in the '90's.

Actually, Moss did the same thing in the 2007 game and the refs incredibly through a flag on the defender because Moss whined for one...and then the Pats scored the game winning TD like 2 plays later. There's a history of "convenient" penlaties for the Pats.

It's a joke you Pats fans are complaning about Ravens fans whining, your QB is the biggest whiner in the NFL the proof is the the replays.

Sorry. It was a pass to Mason I am talking about.

There are few players I hate as much as him

Hey douche...do you remember the penalty on Mike Wright for hitting Flacco's helmet with his hand. That negated a big stop and kept the Ravens drive going. Funny how I haven't heard any Ravens fans complaining about that one.

Apparently Ray Lewis is as big of a whiner as Ravens fans. The Pats OLine pretty much manhandled the Ravens D....you have to admit there wasn't much pressure on Brady much of the time.

I had no idea Ravens fans were such whiny little babies..."the refs...boohoo."

Did the Refs come up a yard short on the 4th down run? Did the Refs throw the interception that ended that drive deep in Pats territory. Did the Refs fumble the kick-off return? Did the refs drop that final pass on 4th and 1?

I hope you guys get pacifiers for Christmas.

BTW-the "Brady Rule" as you call it may just save your QB's knees from a cheap shot from a team that can't think of any other way to win a game other than blatantly going after a QB's knees long after the pass is thrown with NO ONE pushing them into the QB! Steeelers a couple of years ago found themselves in a tight spot against the Bengals and found an easy way to the Super Bowl-take out the QB! Without great QB's why are we going to watch the game? It would be like watching baseball where all the pitchers sucked. We could go back to football where nobody passed and it could be just a ground game. The reality is that America loves to watch football with great QB's going toe to toe. If any idiot can come charging at their knees becasue they can't think of any other way to win at the game then all great QB's would become targets to make up for other teams shortcomings.
This is probably the way football was played when it first started ala the movie "Leather Heads". It did not survive that way nor could it. It's called too dangerous. If you remember when Ultimate Fighting came out-anything hit was OK-including an elbow to someones head. That changed very quickly when some people seriously got hurt. Maybe if it was your QB that was taken out by a low blow last year for the whole season you would be singing a different tune? The reality is-this rule protects all QB's but still can't make up for poor teams that fumble, throw interceptions, etc. You still have to be a good team. Also, try being good sports too. If you fail-own up to it and try to make yourself better rather than blaming refs and badmouthing other players.

Are we allowed to hit Brady in his vag?

To Duckie, Glenn, and Neal

Are you trying to tell us Suggs 'Had Malice in his heart'?

Protecting the QBs from grievous injury is one thing.

Calling two roughing the passer penalties for a QB who is upright and smiling while asking for the calls is another.

Anyone who doesn't get that isn't a fan of competitive sports.

Quit whining everyone.

Here's the reality- the officials made a decision last year to stop trying to determine "intent" on a play.

Combine that with two new rules this year: You can't hit a QB below the knees and you can't hit a QB above the shoulders.

In both plays, he was hit below the knees and in the other play, his face mask was brushed backwards on a very light hit.

Bottom line? Regardless of intent, they were both penalities by definition.

Patriots fans were on the other side of the those calls during week 1 against the Bills with what I thought were BS Roughing the Passer calls, but when i went back and watched it on TV (as opposed to being at the game), I reazlied that it was too close to call so you have to err on the side of caution.

That game wasn't decided by those 2 calls. New England made more plays, Baltimore dropped key passes and we all saw the end result.

12 more weeks of football everyone. Moving along....nothing more to see here!

Seems like I remember the refs making up a rule a few years back in some championship game or the patsies would have lost? They get all the calls all the time along with the sissy QB. Hope Bart Scott nails him from the blind side.

Brady is adopting the new sissy rule open heartedly. The guy has never been a great quarterback to me. He and his records have been obtain by have a offensive line that has allowed him to for the most part sit in the pocket, drink a cup a coffee, have a bagel, survey the entire field and then deliver the ball. Any time he gets real heat applied by the defense he doesn't do well because he is as slow as my grandmother. Everyone knows that the speed and physicalness of the game does not bold well for a slow quarterback and Brady knowing it and knows his days are numbered is now lobbying the refs of the field to give him little tick tack calls that gives his offence the advantage. He is getting exposed by defences like Baltimore or the Jets and he is uncomfortable. He's not that great, just a average quarterback that benefited from a scheme and officials that are designed to protect him. It's sissy play and don't belong in NFL football. It's ruining the game.

THESE ARE THE RULES PEOPLE. DONT HIT THE QUARTERBACK IN THE HEAD OR BELOW THE KNEES AND YOU WONT GET CALLED...

simple.

Rodney Harrison said it best: "And Tom Brady if you're listening...take off the skirt and put on a pair of slacks."

and one dumb question.

Did Brady actually say, " we're unprotected, just sitting there defenseless, so they've got to stay away from me"

I thought the whole point of Football was to TACKLE THE GUY WITH THE BALL!

I forgot the first, and most important part of what Marsha said,

"We're holding the ball..."

"THESE ARE THE RULES PEOPLE. DONT HIT THE QUARTERBACK IN THE HEAD OR BELOW THE KNEES AND YOU WONT GET CALLED...

simple."

Steev said it best. Had Suggs not hit Brady in the legs, he wouldn't have been called for the penalty... wait... what's that you say... oh, well, maybe they'll still call it... look, stop "whining" and pointing out facts Ravens, obviously the Pats fans can't take it any more than Brady can take anyone coming within two feet of his precious anatomy. Can you imagine if he gets hit... what it might do to his modeling career later on? The horror!
