Orioles bringing Trembley back
Schmuck is on a flight from the West Coast to Baltimore but will check in soon with his take on the Orioles' decision to pick up Dave Trembley's option for the 2010 season. What are your thoughts on the news?
Here's a look at some highlights and lowlights of Trembley's tenure in Baltimore.
June 19, 2007 -- Dave Trembley's debut as interim manager
The Orioles suffer their ninth consecutive defeat, a 12-6 loss to the San Diego Padres, a day after naming Dave Trembley as the interim manager when Sam Perlozzo was fired. "For me, I'm very aware of who I am, what I am and where I've come from, managing in the minor leagues a long time," Trembley said at the time. "In my wildest dreams, I could never imagine getting the opportunity to manage the Baltimore Orioles."
Aug. 22, 2007 -- O's remove Trembley's interim tag, get crushed
Before a doubleheader with the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards, the Orioles remove the interim tag from Trembley's title and officially announce that he will return as manager in 2008. The Orioles lose both games to the Rangers, including a 30-3 defeat in the first game. The 30 runs scored by Texas is the most in a major league game since June 29, 1897, when the Chicago Colts beat the Louisville Colonels, 36-7. "It's been a long day today," Trembley said. "Whatever we threw, they hit it. They say hitting's contagious and that certainly was the case in the first game. I've never seen anything like it."
March 31, 2008 -- Trembley's first Opening Day as O's manager
To start his first full season as manager, Trembley requests that the coaching staff dress with the players in the clubhouse. Previously, coaches had lockers in a separate room. "We're all together," he said. "That's the way they did it here in the old days. I don't like it when people aren't accessible. We don't have closed doors here." The Orioles fall, 6-2, to the Tampa Bay Rays on Opening Day before winning the next six games.
May 27, 2008 -- O's outlast Yankees, 10-9, in 11-inning slugfest
The Orioles hit five home runs, including two by first baseman Kevin Millar, to overcome two four-run deficits and four longballs by the New York Yankees in a 10-9 win in 11 innings at Camden Yards. After falling behind for a third time in the top of the 11th, the Orioles score twice to beat former Orioles pitcher LaTroy Hawkins. "That was incredible," Trembley said after the win. "This is the best game I've ever been a part of to win. I'll replay it for a long time."
Sept. 5, 2008 -- O's fall again after picking up Trembley's option
After announcing that Trembley would return in 2009, the Orioles fall apart in an 11-2 loss against the Oakland Athletics at Camden Yards. The Orioles allow eight runs on one hit, six walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the eighth. "I never doubted one bit that I was going to come back because I'm dealing with people who it's important for them to [value] hard work, being fair, being honest -- all those things we've always thought were important. ... It's never been about me," Trembley said about the Orioles' decision to keep him as manager.
May 29, 2009 -- Matt Wieters' debut
In front of an announced 42,704 fans at Camden Yards, Wieters makes his major league debut in the Orioles' 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Prior to Wieters' arrival in the majors, Trembley said: "Really, the best is yet to come. We have better players on the way than what we've had in our system in a long time." Nine players have made their major league debut for the Orioles in 2009.
June 30, 2009 -- Orioles' 9-run comeback win over Red Sox
The Orioles score five runs in the seventh and add five more in the eighth to overcome a nine-run deficit in an 11-10 win over the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards. It is the largest comeback in Orioles history. "That was probably the best game I've been involved in," Trembley said. "That was absolutely tremendous. When you talk about playing all 27 outs, that's tonight. Play all 27."
July 30, 2009 -- O's trade George Sherrill to Dodgers; Brad Bergesen hurt
Bergesen tosses seven innings in a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals to pick up his seventh win of the season. The 24-year-old right-hander leaves the game, however, after being struck in the left shin by Billy Butler's line drive. "Makes you sick to your stomach," Trembley said about Bergesen's injury. "It was a sight I'd rather not relive, and I don't really want to talk about it." Following the game, the Orioles trade closer George Sherrill to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two prospects -- third baseman Josh Bell and right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson.
Aug. 25, 2009 -- Base-running blunders doom O's vs. Twins
Felix Pie is thrown out twice on the bases, and Luke Scott also commits a base-running mistake as the Orioles blow a three-run lead in a 7-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins. "I take full responsibility, but the player should be accountable," Trembley said before the following night's game in Minnesota. "What am I going to tell Felix Pie [Tuesday] night when he's at second base and there's a foul ball right in front of the dugout? Do you think you're invisible? Come on."

I'm ok with it. As others have said, John McGraw or Billy Martin wouldn't have won with this team. He was brought in to acclimate the young guys to the bigs and he did. Matusz, Tillman, Reimold & Wieters all developed pretty well this year. (not to mention the "lost cause" Pie.)
I only hope that he replaces a few of his coaches, Juan Samuel & T-Bone at the very least.
Dave T. - you are a stand up guy and I'm glad you weren't the scapegoat BUT as A.M. said....you better show some results (W/L) Next year or the leash will shorten in a hurry.
p.s. Schmuck - your timing is impeccable

I called for his head but now that the decision has been made I congratulate him and wish him best of luck next year. We all know he's a decent guy who sincerely cares about his players.
No need to keep knocking the guy at this point, his retention is a fait accompli.

Congrats pete and all the other fans that wanted Dave t back you finally got your wish.I was going to save my final posting until after the last game on sunday but why wait. Some where along the line something drastic has happened to the fans and media of this town, they have excepted losing. Losing 100 games doesn't have any negative meaning anymore, all i heard all week on these blogs sites were fans hoping to get the 2nd pick in next years draft. At one time the stigma of accomplishing that would have been way to much to handle but not anymore. See Mr Andy has completley brain washed everybody into thinking that his plan is going to take this team to the promise land something that will never be accomplished under the current structure in baseball.I want everybody to read tomorrow's edition of the paper or go on there favorite interent site and look at the standings in all of baseball. What you will find if you look real hard is not the order of finish of teams but just how impossible it is to win in our division. We are 41 games out of first place with 3 games left, kc is only 20 games out with just winning 4 more games then us. Washington has won 5 fewer games then us and are only 36 games out. Pittsburgh has the same amount of wins and are only 291/2 games out. arizona won 7 more games and are only 25 games out. For all of you fans that don't think playing in this divison is a impossible task just please take the time and look at the results. And for those of you who think that this is going to change you are even further in denial then i originally thought. You will never spend more then boston and the yankee's and top tier free agents will never come to this town. Boston, yankee's california, dodgers philadephia will continue to get those ball players because they have a chance to win. Yes andy has made this team a lot younger but along the way has taken all the heart out of this clubs 2 best ball players. Nick is crawling to the finish line on life support. His 17 home runs are only 1 more then what brian has hit.The chase for the double record is the only thing that has kept brian from completley given up. I could go on and on but i only would be wasting my time and energy so i am just going end all this time consuming rambling and wish everybody good luck. I am going to follow up on my promise to never post again and to not renew our families 15 season tickets. All that i ask is when the orioles flounder again next year that you will honestly remember where you heard it. In conclusion there is a saying in life that goes something like this BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR and that will again hold true in hiring dave t back.Take care of yourself pete and lets hope that the river card treats all of us better in the future.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, Bob, I'm sorry you feel that way, but you're welcome to return at any time...and I'm guessing at some point you will.

If the Orioles lose 90 games next year, does the blame go back to the organization (Angelos and MacPhail)?
Posted by: gregb | October 2, 2009 6:58 PM
Gregb - Yes
Posted by: Bob F. | October 2, 2009 7:02 PM
This to me means another year of at least 90 losses, and possibly 100 (again).

I am OK with this move. I think he's been given nothing to work with. I just wish he would get it out of his head that he has a "seventh-inning guy" and an "eighth-inning guy." How many times do we see this: Seventh inning guy mows em down, 1-2-3, and is gone. Why? Well, because we have an 'eighth-inning guy.' Eighth-inning guy comes in and gets hammered. Lead lost. Game lost. Will these guys break out in hives if they work more than 1 inning? If a guy looks great in the seventh, trot him out there for the eighth.
Welcome back Dave. Good luck next year.

You know I had mixed feelings on bringing him back but I understand the decision. They need some stability and he's well-liked by the players so it's not a bad thing to give him one more year. If there is not significant improvement next year than he definitely needs to go.

WOE IS US!!! I was trying to locate Kevin Cowerd's blog but was unable to. Although noone feels as badly as I do, Kevin has to live another year with Trembley knowing Kevin was the one who spent a whole columd detailing why Trembley must go. You, however, took the easy route knowing that since, either way, the O's were going to suck next year you could stand by your argument that he DESERVED another year. Well not long into next year, maybe by the end of June, you'll realize that your argument had no legs and that Dave was kept on for two reasons (if you don't already know). First PA is spending quarters on this minor league hiree instead of spending big bucks to lure a capable manager to this woebegone franchise and AM is happy to have a mgr who is indebted to him for this coming year instead of a qualified mgr who would want a lot of input in player acquisitions unlike what has happened the past two years.
Since you are already on record I will state my feelings about the coming year. The odds are 50-50 that the O's will break 100 again (about the same odds that you have on the golf course) and DT will be gone by August because thousands of fans will show their displeasure at the turnstiles. This may be hard to prove due to the flood of NY and Bos. fans who will be drooling at the thought of seeing their team play the Birds 7/8 times in Balto. As NY and Bos found out this year nothing solidifys a post season appearence like fifteen or sixteen GUARANTEED wins against one club. If the O's starters are the same next year (and all of you sports EXPERTS have been touting most of them as almost ready since they came up), given their showing in Aug/Sept., what makes anyone think that next April they will be any different. Palmer, my choice for Manager as you know, acknowledges that it takes about two-three years for a young pitcher to learn how to pitch in the majors. This coming year, due to being rushed up ahead of schedule, will, at best, be year 1.5 for most of them. Since AM really isn't likely to improve the position playing cadre given that he now must stregthen the bullpen (which he was supposed to do last year) and also since AM will be extolling the merits of all the holdovers from this year, the young pitchers will have that "deer in the headlights" look again in 2010.
What a waste!

Good for Dave....next year will be make or break for him. The best thing about Dave T. comin back:
NO MORE BOB LANCIONE. What will he do to occupy himself over at Oakcrest?
Posted by: Rob K. | October 2, 2009 7:31 PM
As I have said many times on the blog, Trembley is not the root cause of the problem in the organization and I did not really have an opinion on his status.
That being said I think it means one of two things:
A. Macphail is trying to bring some stability to the team from the manager and coach standpoint. Whether the players respect Trembley or not, they need to accept the that he will be back, and somewhat empowered to deal with them when they don't hustle and/or pull bonehead plays. Trembley was not managing this year with confidence in his job stability.
B. Macphail is throwing up the white flag for 2010 and knows the team will threaten the century mark in losses no matter who he hires. Therefore, until he gets more talent on the field, Trembley will continue to serve as a caretaker manager.

Anonymous I'm still here!
You're fired!!!

I promise you i will never post again. I have never felt so strong about anything. Bringing dave t back is just a ommission on andy's part that this team won't be any better in the near future. Something that is not acceptable any more Good luck pete you are truly a gentleman regardless of what difference's we may have had.
Posted by: blancione | October 2, 2009 7:37 PM
Bob,
Please do not do that. I want to see you on here just as much as anyone else. I like the fact that there is not a revolving door. Bob, Who would have done a better job anyway?
Posted by: CB Coach | October 2, 2009 7:47 PM
Greg, It all matters what moves are made in the off season, if they do not fix holes, they could loose 90 again, but if they do sign someone like Derek Lee, Lackey and a closer, I would say the threshold of pain would be 87 games if they increase their payroll by 40%. It will be interesting.

I am fit to be tied to hear Dave Loser Trembley and his god-awful staff are returning next year. Dave and his excuses and alibis as well as his "gee whiz" attitude make for a long unbearable season. Anybody that thinks Trembley should stay should go to Ocean City with me and I'll sell them some sand.
I could wring McFail's neck and kick him as hard as I can.
What a NITWIT!!!
As of tonight I am boycotting everything Orioles.
WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!
Posted by: Gary K | October 2, 2009 8:05 PM
He's back and still doesn't know how to use pitching. Last night Waters gives up 2 hits, 1 run and out he comes. The reason- IT'S IN THE BOOK. 8th inning- must use "SET UP MAN" - 9th inning must use "CLOSER" - IT'S IN THE BOOK and Trembley has to go by "the book" or something bad might happen to the team. GOOD LUCK TO US LONG SUFFERING O'S FANS. A M, in my no account opinion, has made a terrible mistake.

You have lost me as a fan bringing back this manager. Just refer to the game in Philadelphia that he made a hash of and they won that one. I guess it is true. He is just the cheapest option. It is the straw the broke the camel's back for me. Tell Peter Angelos that if he wants to save money, I will do the the job for $100,000.00 a year on a ten year contract and I will promise better results. This organization is the pitts!!!!

Well I could count 20 or 30 games where DT did a good job managing and you can pin a few things on him, but give me a break, you guys are not blind are you? He does not have Palmer, McNally, Dobson and other former great Oriole arms, right now I do not put any of these guys in the top 25 pitchers of all time for the Orioles. Time will tell.
Posted by: CB Coach | October 2, 2009 9:16 PM
I don't believe that it is the right move and probably can be taken as a sign that the O's will not be competitive next year either. On the other what good manager would want to take on this mess. The loser's attitude is so ingrained here that a new manager with a new attitude is required. Until we turn that around, we will stay just where we are. Trembley may be the man to baby sit our younger players, but he is not the man to turn this team into a winner.

So many bloggers sympathize with DT because he has had so little to work with. Well, who's fault is that? I hear very little about the poor job AM has done since he got here. ONE TRADE, with the Mariners, is the main one and the only real player he got was Jones. I know, how about Sherril? Sherril was a lot of luck and became the closer because the O's lost their's to injury. Given that he was a one-inning pitcher on a club with no help and, I think, because the club thought at mid-year that it was now or never to get something for him before he wore out, he was traded. And what did they get for him? A major league player who could replace the loss of Tejada's power? NOOO. A couple of minor leaguers and Scott.
Oh, by the way. Miggy is 8th in average, 3rd in hits, 1st in doubles and, if I took the trouble to bring up his overall record for this year, probably in the top 10 in some other categories. I don't think that Izturis makes up for all of that. Scott may do it IF they give him a position to play every day. I said earlier this season that no 29 yr-old wants to be a DH all his career. The O's FINALLY found that he hits better when he's playing each half inning with regularity.
O's fans might be sorry in the same way as missing Miggy if Mora is cut loose and goes to another club. Dempsey stated last night that Mora could very well have a comeback next year. AM, probably afraid of a fan backlash, (since so many bloggers wanted to blame all the O's hitting problems on Mora) will either cut him loose or trade him for ANOTHER minor leaguer or two. Maybe PA should sell the club to Las Vegas and buy a minor league franchise. He probably would be able to keep quite a few of the players and the Mgr from this year's team.
You know, Markakis has been touted as a coming star but I see him as a .300-.310 hitter, 20-25 HR's, POSSIBLY 100-110 RBI's, not quite equal to Crawford or Guerrero or Young, etc., just a good AVERAGE player about like Roberts, not quite like Tejada. Jones is their big hope, along with Weiters, but neither of them, nor Markakis either, will stay with the O's instead of playing the outfield or catching for the Yankees, Red Sox or any of the other teams willing to put a first class team on the field.
Fans, it really isn't about the money and our city. Once you pass 5-7 million a year the rest of the money only enlarges the player's foundation/charity and as far as the city goes, look at the players on the Tigers, Rockies and Milwaukee's teams year in and year out. Do their cities outrank Baltimore in size, history, climate, etc.? Stop crying because the O's have to beat out the Yankees and Red Sox each year. The Rays did it. Blatant over-spending will force a correction in baseball sooner or later, so that shouldn't remain a problem, besides the two young sons in NY don't have near the machismo that Dad had. Sorta just like the difference between Larry MacPhail and AM. MAJOR!
Well I see Aubrey hit 2 HR, one a grand slam, and I can see AM saying to himself, "Now I've got a power hitting 1B and a coming Longoria in Josh Bell at 3rd so all I have to spend $$ on are low-cost bullpen pitchers. No sweat." That's how it will always be with AM. Don't upset the boss by spending $$ unnecessarily. Not him. Wonder WHEN this will all end!
Posted by: jayceeO's | October 2, 2009 10:24 PM
Wel,Gary K., I feel the same as you. I stopped buying PA's tickets because I was fed up with the way he has destroyed this franchise. Instead, when I want to see a particular team in town I buy tickets from the guys outside the park. Those tickets are already paid for so its not PA who is getting my money!
Just looking back on DT's record, he holds the largest disparity in scoring in losing the 30-3 game since the 1800's, over 100 years. He also has the third longest(by one) losing streak in the history of the team and the one, a 14 game streak, was in the first year of the franchise when the Browns moved here. The other one, the 21 game streak, came after management fired Cal, Sr. who, as strict as he was, was liked and admired by the rest of the players after seeing how well Cal, Jr. and Billy played the game. The O's COULD have had a good season that year if not for the early firing of Cal, Sr. Even Frank R. couldn't stop the bleeding so you know it was more than a poor team losing all those games.
The rehiring of DT was all about $$ and control, both by PA and AM.
Better days will come. Its just that at 79 I don't know how many more days I have. Good thing I can reminisce about the good old days of Robinson, Robinson, Palmer, Powell, Murray, etc. Aren't you younger guys sorry you weren't born earlier? In my humble opinion we had better sports writers then also, present company excepted, except for that column about DT DESERVING to be kept. How could you, PS?
Posted by: jayceeO's | October 2, 2009 10:56 PM
Hope they keep DT from seeing next year's schedule at least til this season is over. The Birds play the Red Sox, Yankees, Red Sox & Yankees TWELVE TIMES IN THIRTEEN DAYS end of April and beginning of May. How's that for finding out if those young throwers are improved from last year! By then the two teams ought to have AT LEAST a 5 game lead over the rest of the division.
Posted by: jayceeO's | October 2, 2009 11:51 PM
hard to believe DT is coming back -he is a butt kisser who is an inept manager -- it is not about being liked by the players -- it is about being respected. he is just overmatched and unqualified. Unbelievable.
Posted by: shortstop15 | October 3, 2009 6:44 AM
I do not think AM cares about fan backlash, if so then he would have fired Trembley and his staff long ago, and would have released every player except Nick, considering everyone else was attacked on this blog.
