NFL Replay follies

Once again, the NFL replay system proves itself to be something less than dependable. The Ravens challenged the spot on that fake field goal in the fourth quarter, which might have given them the ball before the final Patriots field goal, but there was no clear angle and the officials let the play stand. It looked like the Ravens stopped the play, but the Patriots got another in a long series of favorable spots and the Ravens lost a timeout.

To add insult to injury, after the replay was denied, the referees gave Willis McGahee a very stingy spot on the fourth down play at midfield, but the Ravens didn't have a challenge remaining.

of course very few other than me were watching the O's, but I can watch them and can't watch the Ravens, so what a lovely (albeit weird) way to end the season, on two throwing error on bunts, but I'll take it, a 4 game win streak, our longest this year. Congrats to Nick on his 2 run bomb for 101 rbi's, and so long and thank you Melvin Mora for being a good guy and a great ambassador for the O's for many years, we'll see you when you come back to be inducted into the O's Hall of Fame!

Stingy spot? McGahee was nowhere near the first down!

They may as well ban rushing Tom Brady. Maybe just give him a flag football belt.

Stingy spots (yes Mike, the spots were frequently wrong) were just the start of it. Two bogus roughing the passer penalties (was Brady even touched on either?) leading to 14 points, numerous calls coincidentally taking place on Pats third downs, inconsistent treatment of the same plays depending on which team is running them (Welker defensive pass interference, Mason offensive illegal contact). These refs should all be fired and never allowed to officiate a pop warner game, let alone an NFL game, again.

How can the Patriots be proud of "winning" this game? If it were called fairly it would have been a hard-fought 21-13 Ravens win, if that. It absolutely sickens me the special treatment New England ALWAYS gets from the officials.

Refs were as bas as CBS's coverage of this game.

To take the positive from this game:

1) we now know we can beat the Patriots in a fairly officiated game

2) we now know which receivers we can trust in critical situations (Mason, Washington) and which we can't (Clayton)

3) we now know that Flacco and the offense can hold their own against a top defense playing aggressively

4) we now know our secondary can hold their own against a good WR corps

5) we've seen better stuff from Suggs, continued good play from Jarret Johnson, and solid performance from our O-line (with Oher switching to LT mid-game and playing great)

Lots to build on, and great motivation to keep improving in the weeks to come.

I'm crushed about this loss, but for all the talk about the refs, two turnovers (the fumbled kickoff and Joe's interception in the red zone) were the difference in the ball game. We can't make mistakes like that against teams as good as New England.

You have to love the Brady rules, aka roughing the passer, blow to the head, and going for the knees rule. While the officials were on Brady's dick , Flacco was pile driven into the turf, and Gaither's head, a good 10 seconds after he threw the ball. Naturally there was no call. Oh and the Personal Foul on the ravens bench was classic. Bill Cowher was always running up and down the field screaming and ranting and never was penalized. Pats=0, Shoddy Officiating=1

since the penalty was illegal procedure the play is "dead" before the snap so you can't do much other than penalize the offensive team 5 yds and replay the down. it's not like the play was run and their was an infraction during the play. they ravens had a real chance to win the game at the end but when you drop passes right in your hands on 4th down you're not going to win. no big deal. you're unlikely to win every game and they were beat by a good team on the road. one nice thing they didn't rush or panic on the last drive just got beat. and the turnovers killed them.

You can complain about crappy calls all you want, but the refs had nothing to do with Mark Clayton dropping a wide open pass. That is just inexcusable.

Lets all chip in and buy the refs a bottle of scope. They were on Brady's dick all day.

Diablo - only losers claim the refs lost the game for them.

Baltimore should be renamed Babymore based on all this crying...."the refs boohoo!"

Brady begging for a flag every time someone runs by him is pathetic , and the media just loves the little pu**y.

He runs to the officals like a little kid who got pushed by a sibling.

Its not so much that we are mad at the refs, we're mad about the rules made to protect the QB. Its ridiculous how the QB is placed on a pedestal and isn't allowed to be hit like other players. This is a Man's sport. But with the rules the way they are, they might as well put flags on the QB's.

Enough about the ref's. What about 3and 1, 4th and 1????? Pats gave a touchdown to you. Finally Brady was knocked out for the year by a less blatant dive at the knee than this one. Look for a big fine.

LOL Ravens fans. Need some cheese with all that whine? Excuses are for losers, pure and simple. Great teams find ways to win DESPITE [insert multiple excuses here]. Good news for you ... this wasn't a playoff game, and Ravens are 3-1 early in the season. But give the whining a rest, seriously.

The Refs made a great interception of that Flacco pass to kill that drive. And don't forget about the hit the Ref put on Carr to cause that first fumble. What about when the Ref stopped McGahee a yard short on 4th down. And then the Ref got Clayton to drop that pass. And the Ref caming running across the field to knock away that TD pass from Mason.

Yeah...the Refs played a great game.

Yes...cry Ravens fans....cry....your tears sustain me....

it seemed like the refs HAD NO CLUE WHAT TO DO, so they just did NOTHING

I dont know whats more disgraceful, the refs in that game or the ownership of Peter G Angelos

Put some of the blame on the Raven's players. Did the refs cause Clayton to drop the ball???

The Ravens are way overrated.. SanDiego (8-8) is the only team the Ravens have beaten with a "winning" record last year. Cleveland and KC were 6-26 last year. Get real guy (and get a pass rush - if Brady were tuned up more you'd have gotten beaten by 3+ TDs)

To the "Brady is gay" blogger...how old are you, 10???

Oh come on, Ravens fans! More whining? How about admitting you just got beat? How about admitting the Patriots defense outplayed the vaunted Ravens defense?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: They definitely got beat, Ken, but it isn't just Ravens fans. Brady's former teammate, Rodney Harrison, said last night that it was time for him to "take his skirt off."

Outside the obvious miscues on behalf of the Ravens, they did get jobbed on several calls:

1. Mason was called for Pass Interference doing the same thing Welker did to Carr on the illegal contact call. They ran into each other. It wasn't like Carr kept Welker from streaking to the endzone.

2. Physics says you cannot roll over with control of a ball when only being held by the nose of the ball. the ball popped off the ground and into his crotch held only by the tip of it.

3. Suggs stumbled into Brady. The penalty was only called after Brady signaled to remind the Ref of the foul created to protect him. That is not in the spirit of why the rule was created.

4. How did the WR on the fake stretch the ball out of bounds to reach the 1st down? Doesn't it work the same as reaching around the pylon scoring a TD.

Hey Shamrock - I love the crying....yes cry into your little pillow....

That spot on McGahee was horrible - he should have lost a yard! He wasn't even close. That play was blown up in the backfield. The spot on the fake fg attempt - hard to say - the camera angles were bad, but that happens. I mean really - on a FG, the cameras are focused on the fg and are hardly expecting the holder to throw a pass to the sideline.

Look, the officiating in any NFL game is real bad at times because officials are unaccountable. That's true in every sport, in fact. They tend to be overweight, old, and too white. I'm white, too, but doesn't the overwhelming demographic stats tell you something? Their institution needs to be trashed and rebuilt.

Two, ignore any comments from anyone in or near Massachusetts. Just look at their politics up there. They're born with their heads up their bums.

Three, Cam Cameron must be from Massachusetts. Where was the running game, especially when we couldn't protect Flacco in the first half?

Four, I'm losing my faith when the Pats play better D than the Ravens, and who's an all-pro on that D? Like the Dolphins "No-Name Defense of old. We miss Rex.

Pete, this game was more frustrating than most Raven's games I have been used to watching. I know when your team loses, it is almost always bad officiating - at least by the fans standpoint. But after I re-watched my DVR recording of the game, I made myself believe somebody on the officiating crew was influenced to 'lean' a certain way with the calls on the field. I am not sure what the hell the refs were looking at on the replay, I think everyone could see that yardage that was made. The whole game was like this. Bad spot after bad spot. Then plays where their were 'ghost' penalties like Mason's offensice pass interference call and then Welker does the same thing and we get penalized? Where is the justice in that. A few bad calls and I usually just blow it off to human error, but this many biased calls? Then the inadvertant 'roughing the passer' calls that Brady got? C'mon! He wasn't even tackled by Suggs (more like slightly grazed) and the other one was even more objectional (against 'Nata). What makes this even more curious is that Brady gestured for a flag - and the official gives it to him (as he laughs afterward)! Plus his comments after the game kind of prodding the NFL (and Ray) for QB's (especially him) protection.

When does this crap stop? Who knows? Why is every 'important' game that the Ravens have, seem to be officiated like this? Sometimes we get the 'W', but when we don't...it seems more personal.

Bottom line though...we would have won this one if Mark Clayton would stop lubing his hands up before games. No excuse Mr. 1st rounder! Sad part is, he does it all the time!

Ughhh...frustrating.

To me the spot on the fake field goal was the biggest mistake call of the game. Think about it... The correct spot would have taken 3 points off of the board and allowed the Ravens to kick a field goal to tie it on the 4th down that Clayton dropped. Admittedly, the team that won the hypothetical OT coin toss probably would have won the game but I'd take that over the refs botching the spot and "stealing" the Raven's last challenge.

Bart Scott was right.
