My take: Nike re-signs Vick
Nothing really surprises me anymore, but I do find it interesting that Nike has decided to get back in bed with Michael Vick some two years after pulling out of his promotional contract because of his involvement in a reprehensible dogfighting operation.
I mean, what's the company's slogan going to be when it splashes Vick's face all over the sports planet? Oh, here's an idea:
Nike: Just don't do it anymore
Feel free to come up with one of your own.
I'm sure Nike has come up with a way to spin the whole thing into an interesting advertising campaign -- probably one of those dark, edgy shoots with Vick looking remorseful and talking about paying the price.
What I'm not sure of is whether Vick will ever regain his superstar status, as it relates to anything but his disturbing past. The Eagles used him in a number of situations last week, but he didn't exactly light up the stadium.

Pete
I heard Nike just signed Angelos on that ad campaign.

None of this is true. Nike actually signed Daniel Cabrera to a shoes deal.

Vick had been out of the game for two years, so to render a verdict on what he is capable of after a single regular season game is a bit premature.
It's not a definite by any means that he will regain his previous form, but it's far too early to tell. I would imagine that he still has a lot of rust to shake off.

What a sleazy attempt to distract people from the Orioles! Also that debate you did Pete had MASN productions written all over it. Just more propaganda to get people ready for Trembles coming back because Angelos is too cheap to hire an MLB manager.

Pete's reply: You're on to me, Q. This is all part of my sleazy attempt to convince you that the Orioles won 95 games this year and are going to the playoffs.

I think Michael Vick is truly sorry....that he got caught.
The American people have the attention span of a gnat. Vick is only one is a lost list of professional atheletes and politicians guilty of criminal and illegal behaviour who "take responsibility for their actions" but never really admit to anything.
Eventually most are rehabilitated with the help of the media and the public due to their star status.
Vick's actions are reprehensible due to the extraordinary cruelty of his actions, but it is unfair to single him out from all of the rest of the celebrities and congress people who have gamed and abused the system and either gotten away with it, or had their hands slapped.
I think the torches and pitchforks should be directed at the United Capital building where the real thugs work, not at Nike.

What you did was bully an old man in an attempt to sway fans to warm up on the Trembles idea because Angelos doesn’t want to pay. Now you are bringing up distraction stories on more polarizing figures than Angelos and Trembley. Great formula to sell it. I also love your rationale that even though Trembley has horrible numbers and should not have got the job in the first place you think he deserves to stay because the Orioles have fired people too soon in the past. That’s insane Pete. Trembley couldn’t manage the all star team and you know it.

Pete's reply: Who's the old man you're talking about? And what the hell does writing about Michael Vick have to do with the Orioles. It's in the football section. Hey, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there wasn't somebody behind that grassy knoll in Dallas.

Hey, it's all about the second chances. If Ray Lewis can still grab endorsements, why not Vick? Nike has probably researched this and found out that not too many dog-lovers are in their athleticshoe/ sportswear target market. I'm sure this decision was made with the bottom-line in mind and not just to improve Vick's cash flow. Who knos what the fall-out will be? Maybe some dog-lovers group will start staging protests outside of Nike!!

I guess Q thinks Connolly is an old man?
regardless, I wish posters would be less obnoxious here. We can disagree with Pete without calling him names or accusing him of taking bribes from P.A.

What I find interesting is that you're in the news biz but didn't bother to check the facts on a very fishy-sounding story before running it.

How about a magazine ad showing Vick about to get his left arm chomped by a bulldog wearing a Nike swoosh sweater-"Just chew it."
