Tillman's time left

Manager Dave Trembley said the other day that Chris Tillman has a few starts left this season, but I wouldn't bet on that. I'm betting that if Tillman has a performance tonight like Brian Matusz had in his last start against the Yankees, the Orioles will call a halt to his first major league season.

Nobody told me that, but it just seems logical and it would be consistent with Trembley's original indication at the start of September that Tillman (and Matusz) would make two or three more starts.

If I were Trembley, I would want to keep him in the rotation as long as possible to maintain some semblance of competitiveness during the final weeks of the season, but Dave is a true believer. He really would put the future of the kid in front of his own chance to get his contract option picked up.

Well, we'll see won't we. I sure hope Tillman puts up a terrific line tonight. I think the possible damage to these kids arms may be being a bit exaggerated, I trust Kranitz and the training staff to know when a pitcher has had enough, and not push him too hard so I don't buy into the idea that fewer innings is automatically better for him. If he's feeling good, pitching well, and not having any problems I'd like to see him get those extra starts they first planned for him. If he does pitch well and the team wins again behind him, I think that is a bigger aid to his development than a little more rest, and the chance to get another win or two is worth the risk especially since that was the original plan.

Pete,

I am sure the Trembley decision has already been made for 2010, good or bad.

Do you think that three more starts for Tillman would change that?

Pete You said if i were dave t i would want to keep tillman in the rotation as long as possible. You also said that dave is a true believer and that he would put the kid in front of his own chance to get his contract option picked up. I don't doubt for one minute that dave t is a good caring man , but please don't kid yourself into thinking that this would be his decision , you know that andy pulls all the puppet strings on this team. Shutting down matusz wasn't dave t's decison and neither will this one. Why do you continue to make dave t out to be some martyr.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I didn't say it was his decision. I said he would concur with it. Of course that would be an organizational decision.

Any chance Mora will be shut down? Sure would like to see if Justin Turner can do something other than sit on the bench.

If you need further evidence of what i said, go to the sept 14th blog Matusz shutdown official. Pete why would you write a article trying to make it look like it's dave t decison i truly don't understand it.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't either. I always portray that stuff as organizational. Andy made the announcement.

Bob,

I am sure that Trembley and MacPhail collaborated on how to shut down the young guys.

I agree with Pete, Dave is the type that would not do anything to jeopardize a young mans future, even if it meant the end of the road for his managerial career.

Wouldn't the decision to shut down a player for future considerations come from MacPhail instead of Trembley? I'm not saying Trembley wouldn't have an opinion on the matter or wouldn't voice it. It just seems to me the GM would be making that kind of decision on most baseball teams (even though past eveidence points to the Orioles not being in with "most" most of the time anyway).

Cb coach you wouldn't agree with me if your life depended on it.You missed the whole point of what i am saying. The article specifically implied that it was dave t decison and all he was trying to do is get dave't saint hood. Wake up cb you seem to know your sports but i can't believe that you are always that maive about things. Whether you people agree or disagree with me i don't give a rat's a$$ but please tell it like it is once in awhile

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: For one thing, it is impossible to "specifically imply" something. I was talking about Dave's philosophy. Everybody knows MacPhail made the original announcement. You need to chill out and stop seeing a freaking conspiracy in everything. And, while I'm on the subject, I apologize to you for implying Dave is a nice guy. I know that offends you.

Like others have said, this is almost surely not Trembley's decision, and it surely shouldn't be. This is the front office's call to make all the way.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yes, it is. I guess it's my fault that I didn't repost Andy's original quotes on the matter. I was talking about Dave's attitude toward it.

Pete,

Will Matusz and Tillman retain their rookie status for next year? What is the total innings pitched that defines this point? It would be nice to see the two pitchers compete next year for Rookie of the Year. I know this is NOT that important an issue... but it would be nice.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Matusz will. Tillman won't.

Bob L,

I do agree with you, I stated that Trembley and MacPhail collaborated on the staff. Who continues and who is shut down.

Trembley has been very careful with Tillman and Matusz all season and to be honest, if they played their cards right and signed a few proven starters before the season started these guys would have never had to worry about being in the rotation. It would have been much better to break them all in as long relief pitchers instead of throwing them to the wolves. Pitching is so fragile, and yes they all learned by being thrown to the wolves. But none of that is Trembley's fault, he had to go with what was presented to him. All I know is there are three ways you can go. 1. The old George Allen way; "The Future is now", or the Yankee way; Develop some great talent then buy the rest or the way the Orioles are heading (and hope they go back to the drawing board) "Grow your pitching and buy your hitting"

Bob, really I hear you, honestly I do. If I had to put out hard earned money to go to the games I would not. In the old days before Camden Yards, there was a place called Memorial Stadium where the average ticket price was about 9 bucks, and you did not have to pay 4,000 dollars for a 29 game plan. Another thing, you support the team and you should be applauded because about 15 thousand ticket holders have thrown in the towel. Where you are misguided on your approach to wither you will support this team is because of the manager, and that is not how you should justify you spending money. Torre, LaRussa, Girardi and a lot of other successful managers have some say in the talent that is brought in, Trembley is not involved, and really I do not like that part. In the old days, there use to be meetings where the manager would go over what he wants, and the GM would run with it. Even though I am not privy to a lot of the goings on, I can tell you DT is just a pawn in the MacPhail world of baseball. Who will be held accountable? DT of course!

Pete,
I hate to see them put Hendrickson back into a starter's role, but I guess like they feel they have no choice. The guy really did a great job out of the pen, and you hate to screw up a good thing like that. What about some of these other minor leaguers they brought up, like Chris Waters?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's what I thought they would do.

To pete and cb, lets clear up something right now. The main reason that i don't want dave t back is just what cb implied that dt is just a pawn in andy's world of baseball. That being the case you can't win with that type of manager. All andy wants from dave t at this time is somebody that won't rattle the ship he wants a stable person in the dugout regardless of whether he has great leadership skills or talks out of both sides of his mouth. When dave t was hired i bought into his speech about fundementals hook line and sinker and in the 2 full years he has had with them in spring training there hasn't been one bit of improvement. If andy hires him back next year all he is really saying to the fans of this town is we are still lite years away from being competive. He is just a place holder and i can't tolerate that attitude anymore. Jim harbaugh is a nice guy but when he took over this team he didn't care if the players liked him or not he only cared about whether they bought into his way of doing things. He alienated a lot of veterans with his tough traing camp but he eventually weeded out those that didn't agree with him you can see the results now. while this team is different in that the orioles are just kids you have to have a manager that will set the tone for many years to come and dave t is not that guy.

I am with you, but remember, whoever the next manager may be, as long as Andy is here, MacPhail will call the shots. Who do you think the Orioles can hire to be the manager? Lets assume Trembley is done after the season ends.

Do you think that the Yankees would be in anything other than first if Trembley managed them?

Hey the Ravens changed coaches because we had a coach that wanted to do more than just coach. We went from someone that was a solid head coach with a super bowl win under his belt, to someone that never had been a head coach.

Cb you know as well as i do players have to respect the manager. Dave t in the yankee's eye's only would have been a career minor league manager who never accomplished anything.I am not saying that they wouldn't be good but i won't say that they would be the same team. Joe played for the yankee's and proved with florida that he had the skills to be sucessful.

I have to agree that Trembley future with the O's have already been decided by the powers that be and a extra start or two by a 21 year old would not make a difference.

Isn't there a career minor league manager/player who represents Baltimore in the Hall of Fame?

Bob,

Really, explain Earl Weaver then. What he had when he came here was a better team. I give up Bob, it is like beating a dead horse. With every manager I do not give a crap which one, you are only as good as the talent you have. ANY MANAGER can look as good as Girardi when you have the talent. Remember the year Cal Senior was fired after starting 0-6, Frank Robinson then went on to lose 101 of 155 games. Then the next year they made some big improvements in 89, but after that they started losing again.

I am not saying that Trembley should stay or go, but really you put too much emphasis on the manager. I remember when Dave Johnson was here, do you? Guess how many times after the season started he had infield-outfield practice? Maybe once every two weeks.

Talented ball players with savvy win games. That is what the team lacks. Bring in Buck and see what he can do, even though you will have changes in the team and you cannot duplicate this year, or last. Andy needs to change his plan, that is the bottom line. Last year we used 40 some pitchers. This year to remedy that problem MacPhail decided to bring in Koji, Eaton, Hendrickson and gave Simon the fifth starter job. How did MacPhail help him have success, and he was not supposed to win this year. If the President declares this is not a year to judge by wins and losses, and declares he has a plan for success in 3-5 years, is anyone really at fault?

Also the sad part is that going into 2010, the Orioles will have only four seasons out of the last 20 that they played over .500 ball. The previous 20 years before that only had two losing seasons. Awful direction this once proud organization has gone.

Cb i can feel your frustration with me, but it won't matter much longer. I am dead serious in my postion that if dave t is rehired i won't post on this site again nor renew my families season tickets. That will be my way of drawing the line. You or the many posters on here might not understand but it's something that i feel very strong about.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It doesn't count if you move to another Orioles blog, Bob, but we all know you would be back one way or the other. You can't stay away. You've tried before, but my blog personality is just too irresistable.

More and more every post, I hope against hope that they don't bring Dave back.

And this is coming from a guy who really likes Dave and wants to see him in an O's uniform next year...but sometimes we have to make compromises to get what' s more important in life.

Peace of Mind (Peace of Blog)

Hi Enzo,

I would not hold this against Dave Trembley, he is doing exactly what he has been asked to do. If your job is judged by something that no one would have a chance of success with, and achieving something that could never be achieved, it would be awful. Like asking the McDonalds guy at the grill, to make a quality steak like Ruth Chris steak house. Fire them all, fire every manager that comes through the door.

Problem is the Orioles took a long time to address a lot of problems, maybe this off season it will be better. But you have to look at the positives. They are only a few position players away from having a good offensive and defensive team. And the young pitchers are pretty good. The minor league system is not depleted any longer. They just need a reliable bullpen and two position players that have proven talent and savvy.

~~To pete and cb, lets clear up something right now.~~

Now I know how Moses felt when God answered all his questions and gave him the ten commandments. Now that the Lanced Boil has "cleared up" the meaning of life, deigning to come down from on high to enlighten us on the secrets of the universe, we might as well immediately stop publishing newspapers and dismantle the internet, for any opinions we might have are immediately null and void now that the almighty has "cleared things up for us". Has this nattering nabob of negativity ever posted without calling Pete names, trashed every and any thing connected, no matter how remotely to the Orioles? using over the top perjurative words and phrases or "specifically implying" that we all have a lot of nerve questioning his irrefutable proclamations?

Why am I afraid that all of the "fire Tremblay" posts has the same effect on Lancione that internet porn has on high school boys in puberty?

Lucky that was good!

pete... your last line sounds a little awkward as if Trembley would put his option ahead of the rookie's arm health...

...or maybe I misread I need to go to the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too

Hey Shamrock,

What he is saying is that Tembley would take the bullet instead of risking the future of a guy that has the upside of Tillman.

Or a little deeper translation is Trembley could be fired for following orders!

So Pete,

Your blog is to the Orioles blog world what Taco Bell is to the fast food world? Sometimes you want to stay away, in a moment of weakness you find yourself succumbing to the urge even though you know it's eventually going to make you feel sick inside and that you'll regret it as soon as you read it?

I can kind of see what you meant. It all works out in a way since we can then go and read your articles in the printed paper when we have to "run for the border" as it were.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I didn't realize my blog and column had the same gastrointestinal effect as a grilled stuft burrito, but I'll take it as a compliment.

CB- gotcha... just came across a little wierd

Gee, I have not seen so much confusion over what an author said in his writings since Joyce's "Ulysses". Have you ever written a column in stream of consciousness?

I just found your responses to Bob humorous.

There was a compliment in there somewhere though, you're correct.
