Stir crazy
The clock is finally starting to run down on my 2 1/2 months of home confinement, which seems like a pretty stiff penalty for one lousy rebound. I will not be returning to the basketball court any time soon, but I hope to be back in real action on Monday, when the Orioles return from their uplifting tour of Boston and New York.
The past 10 weeks has seemed like forever, but I will count my blessings. If nothing else, I'll come out of it a thinner, healthier guy -- at least until I can start driving to Burger King again. I'd like to say that during my recovery period, I had an epiphany about my eating habits, but what really happened was that I no longer could get to the fast food joints and the ice cream aisle at Safeway on my own and my family basically refused to give me anything to eat that was actually worth eating.
Haven't had a Dorito since June, and the withdrawal symptoms weren't pretty. Been forced to survive on a lot of green stuff, which the PETA people say is pretty good for you. I've adjusted for the most part, but nobody has seen the cat around here for a couple of weeks and I'm not talking.
By the way, I don't spend a lot of time plugging my competitors, but Roch Kubatko's morning post at The School of Roch is pretty hilarious, and since he took a quality shot at me in it, I'm going to link it right here. I don't think it's a real school, because the admission form only asked for my measurements and a link to my teen model Web site. I provided both, but I doubt I'm going to get accepted.

I know funny (sometimes), and that's funny! Nicely played, my friend.

Pete's reply: Thanks man. See you at OPACY on Monday.

Hey Pete,
At least you had your Diet Coke! Funny stiff.
Go splurge when you get out, go eat as much radishes and celery as you want. Use a nice balsamic dressing. What a treat that will be. Come on Pete you have to admit that is better sounding than a nice big juicy double Whopper with Cheese and a bag of ranch Doritos!

Pete's reply: That's good eating.

Pete: I have been following your achilles adventure closely. I blew mine out 100% in August, 2005 playing lacrosse (so "I feel your pain" quite literally). It gets better. Do precisely what the PT tells you, and keep stretching it when you get out of the boot. I did it, and was running again by February. Hang tough, get better, and stay away from the Whoppers. Lighter is better after these sorts of injuries.

Pete's reply: Thanks. I am trying to go lighter and I've been sticking very faithfully with the PT program. Got religion on that from the O's trainers and also my old friends with the Angels.

Pete
You finally said something smart by picking the Steelers to win the Super Bowl.
I think your bloggers are going to hammer you now.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Perhaps, but you have to go with what you think is going to happen, not what you want is going to happen.

Glad to hear you're doing better.

Pete's reply: Thanks very much.

C'mon Pete, Papa John's and Quizno's deliver. Did your family also hide your wallet and credit cards?
Seriously I am glad that you are coming of the DL and will be able to once again see a bona fide professional baseball team play in person, meaning whoever our opponents are.

Pete,
The Steelers are going to win the SB???
As a matter of fact, only 1 of the Baltimore sports journalists picked the Ravens to go to the Super Bowl.
Trying to get a job at ESPN??
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Stop it. I'll be happy to be wrong, but I have to go with my gut on the preseason predictions.

Fire Doritos.

Well,
In NY, and it just so happens I'll likely witness Jeter getting a hit that breaks the Yank record.
Begs the question: How can it be no Yankee, with their storied past, has ever had 3,000 hits?
Anyway, I'll applaud the dude while wearing my O's jacket. Derek's a class act and deserves the accolades.
Had this Sox/Yank trip planned long ago. Little did I know the O's would be this bad. No, I had no expectations this year....not even getting to 500. This however, is arguably the worst O's team in history, thus testing fans to the max!
Stir crazy indeed!

Well pete i am glad you are finally feeling better. That first double whooper is surely going to taste great. On another note your last response to my posting indicated that if andy didn't improve what amounted to a expansion team in 3 years you would revaluate the situation. You know what pete if the orioles were a expansion team i for one would except all of this losing , but never once did andy ever indicate that this was a expansion team and that whatever they were doing was going to make this team competive. Well pete that is were the problem lies this team is not even close to being competive and every off season we here the same old crap about being willing to do what ever we have to do to get better. I am trying very hard to seperate the losing from when andy took over from when the other incompetent leaders ran this team but it's a very hard thing to do. We are so far behind the top teams in our division i just can't see us ever making up that much ground. 72 games against the best divison in baseball only magnify's our problems , the won loss differential against these teams truly makes us look like a expansion team something that this once proud organization should never be compared with.

blancione:
I think the biggest problem is that when Andy took over from the earlier incompetent losers, this team was either on the same level or worse than an expansion team. There was nobody in the farm system with any talent to speak of, and our best players were either on steroids and getting ready to retire, or just overpaid wastes of cash. The types of veterans that expansion teams would get because they weren't worth protecting by their previous club.
If 2 years from now, year 4 of this "plan", we are still not competing and he has still not signed any free agents of any significance, that is when it can be deemed a failure.
But not at this point, when 4/5 of the rotation are rookies, 1B/3B are revolving doors, the entire outfield and our catcher are 25 years old or younger, and the off-season free agent signing with the most impact is a 29 year old slick fielding shortstop with a .250 batting average, .330 slugging percentage, and 1.5 home runs who is playing for his 6th team in the last 3 years.
Sorry, I should qualify that last statement... the off season free agent signing with the most POSITIVE impact.

Hey Pete, off topic, but you think maybe in the next two and a half months the "brain trust" at the Sun will do a story on the breaking news about the ACORN office in Baltimore? I mean, they send reporters and have stories about a lame #8 being stolen but they don't have the time to do a story on a MAJOR news event like this that involves taxpayer money and fraud amongst other things? Oh wait....it's Democrats with ties to ACORN, so doing a story about their fraud and breaking the law wouldn't help the Sun far left agenda.

Yellow J,
Unwritten rule on the Pete blog, no politics. There are plenty of blogs that you can vent on that have the appropriate venue.
I don't know if the regular posters are Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians or Rastafarians, Nor do I care to find out.

Gil
Agreed. There are about a trillion places to post political commentary. Take it there

Welcome back Bob L,
I still don't think the AL East is an impossible mountain. The Yanks reliable core is over 35 (Posada, Petitte, Damon, Rivera) and Jeter/ARod are entering the twilight years as 35 is coming up for each of them too. The Red Sox are hanging on, but look at what it took this year. They tried Smoltz, just reached on Byrd/Wagner and rented Martinez, Gonzalez, Kotchman & LaRoche (for a week or so anyway).
They've been very volatile clubs and that's just reacting to Tampa Bay and Texas. Imagine the response if the O's can rattle their cage too. We have about 5 wins against each right now. Imagine their reactions when we take about 3 more games each next year. Not a huge number considering the games we basically gave away this year. It'd rattle the cages for sure. That's how Tampa found success. It's like finally standing up to the bully.
That being said I definitely agree that we need to start being aggressive and applying more pressure. We still need at least 2 big additions to this club to get those extra wins next year. Add 2 more in 2011 and McPhail could change the significance of the number 11 that's associated with his name.
Bob M,
Very clever. I mean, I volunteer for the MDSPCA and have zero respect for you or anything you'll ever say again, but HAHA so funny. You take an act of class from the players and the Orioles organization that saves the lives of at risk animals and turn it into a poop joke.
Who let you near a computer?
wayne,
I hope the New York leg goes better than the Boston portion. I just hope Jeter doesn't pass Rose too while you're up there.

Still feeling good about the SB pick there Pete? Even before the Hines Ward fumble, they looked a bit off.
They're just lucky Bironas is on my fantasy team (a true kiss of death for a player I feel good about having on my team in August) and missed those kicks.
Oh, and blasphamy on the Burger King. McDonald's is my addiction.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: They seem to find a way. Certainly won't be upset if I'm wrong.

Pete,
I too have been closely watching your recovery....I was the one who suggested you keep a container for urine close to the bed..... I remember, during a PT class after my Achilles surgery, talking to a guy about your age who blew out his tendon a second time while chasing his dog in the back yard.....so take your time and listen to what they tell you.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks for the tips. I will definitely be careful.
