Reimold update

Nolan Reimold claims that a final decision has not been made on surgery for his sore Achilles tendon, but he's giving every indication that he'll undergo a procedure immediately after the season that will smooth over a spot on his heel bone that has caused the tendon to fray. He said today that the recovery time has been estimated at 3-4 months, which would mean he'll have about a month of wiggle room before spring training.

Manager Dave Trembley cited Reimold's sore ankle as the reason he was not brought on to pinch hit in last night's game, and the reason why Reimold is not in the lineup for tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I was not going to play Reimold yesterday, out of respect for him,'' Trembley said. "He was sore. He played a lot of games in a row. I told him I would not call on him unless it was an extreme emergency."

Reimold will be available to pitch hit.

"He said he feels a whole lot better,'' Trembley added. "He could play. The lineup has more to do with Reimold than that lineup being successful last night."

PLEASE get the surgery and STOP PLAYING THIS SEASON.

This season is a wash. Why on earth would he risk a monumental injury in tearing his achilles for this death march of a final 3 weeks???

Why not shut Reimold down for the rest of the year? There's no point in possibily making the injury worse by playing him. We should be able to give some playing time to the guys called up.
Guys are dropping like flies; in a couple of weeks, maybe Pete will get a chance.

Would someone please tell me what is the upside to Nolan playing any more this year.....he has done a great job.....we know how valuable is is going to be to the team next year......so why not get the surgery now. Give him more time to recover.

I still think we should give him a look at 1st base.

Pete, Any reson you know of that Mora is still playing everyday and we're not trying to see if Turner might at least be a stop gap at 3rd next season?

Pete's reply: Probably because Melvin plays good defense and they want the young pitchers to have a chance to finish strong.

Great start so far for Tillman.

One thing that baffles me though: What's up with his strikeout numbers?

After 9.9 K/9 and a 2.54 K/BB ratio in the minors, he's got 5.6 K/9 and a 1.6 K/BB ratio in the bigs.

Weird...

This is off topic but when has that ever stopped me.

Everyone is gushing over how cute this is; however, my take is that the kid's a Phillys' fan so I figure that she saw Santa in the lower deck and was trying to wing him since he brought her socks last xmas.

B, for one thing, it's always a lot easier to strike guys out in the minors. They chase. They miss at the offspeed pitch. Guys up here will at least make contact.

Reimold's injury sounds like something I had called Hagelunds deformity. Basically a bump on your heel that aggravates the Achilles tendon. I used to be a competitive runner but it caused me to stop that. It just gets worse over time to the point where I couldn't run at all with significant pain the next day. Eventually it got tender after just walking. The surgery cleared everything up though the recuperation period is long due to the slow healing process of the achilles area.

I wish I'd had it done years before.

From what my doctor told me I can expect it in the other foot too but I've nearly made it to 50 without a problem so far.

Based on my experience, I wish Nolan would do it now. The extra two weeks more than makes up for the extra ABs he get the rest of the month.

Well I have a few theory's on Reimold.
1. The injury is not going to be worse by playing now
2. The young rookie wants to still prove a point he belongs in the bigs everyday
3. There is plenty of time to heal if in fact he does have surgery

What does get me on this is this point; the Orioles are shutting down rookie pitchers that are healthy while letting a prized rookie outfielder play through the injury. Really should be shut down and deal with it now. Follow the docs advise. Remember the reliever Gregg Olkson that went against doctor recommendations to have surgery and look how his career fell apart and could never throw that knee buckling curve that he once had. .

I'll join the choir here and call for Reimold to be shut down. All players want to show that they are "gamers" who can play through pain, but there is no reason for AM and DT to let Reimold injure himself further.
I agree that it's at least as important to protect Reimold as it is to protect our young pitchers, and the risk to Nolan seems much greater than the risk that Tillman, who apparently feels fine will hurt his arm just by throwing a few more innings.
Don't worry Nolan, everyone can see you're the real deal. Give it up for this year, get healthy, and come back and start terrorizing AL pitchers next season.

I'm going to hazard a guess that Reimold's still playing because he wants to solidify his shot at RotY. He's still a long-shot, given the couple of rookie pitchers out there with great starting records. But maybe he thinks a couple more weeks of good numbers will open a few more eyes.
