O's: Things change
I don't have to tell anybody here that it's been a long season, but I can think of a few things that might illustrate the point:
The 2009 season has been so long that Felix Pie has had time to go from being the most unpopular position player on the team to being the reason some people think the Orioles should move Rookie of the Year candidate Nolan Reimold to first base.
The 2009 season has been so long that Mark Hendrickson started the season as the embodiment of everything that supposedly was wrong with Andy MacPhail's winter strategy, but has had time to evolve into a valuable enough situational reliever to make a case for a new contract.
The 2009 season has been so long that the Orioles recent hired a shaving coach for Brian Matusz and Chris Tillman.
Okay, now it's your turn...

The 2009 season has been so long that at the beginning, we just had Markakis and Jones as the "foundation" of our youth movement. Now, we four walls (Reimold, Weiters, Tillman, and Matusz) and a really big "high ceiling" (Pie, Bergesen, Berken, Arietta, Snyder, Bell, Waring, et. al.)

I don't know weather you've noticed but Hendrickson has turned into one of out most reliable relievers. I think bringing him and Baez back would be smart. You can't have all twenty somethings out in the pen. Your not going to have 8 all stars in the pen either.

The 2009 season has been so long that now, whenever the Orioles are up with the bases loaded and nobody out, I simply turn off the game, close my eyes, walk upstairs in darkness, get into bed, and dream of an immaculate home plate, protected by an anti-spike force field.

The 2009 season has been so long that when Garry Thorne says “two- rbi” home run I no longer say, what the ….but instead say what an imaginative, innovative way this play-by-play man has given all of us who once loved the sound of “two-run home run” but now realize that the expression “two-rbi home run” is so, so, so, beautiful that it doesn’t matter if the opponent hits it and Gary sounds so enthused about the moment.
The 2009 season has been so long that I thought Plankton was doing play-by-play and Sponge Bob was doing color, but as Sandy told me from her field microphone, that was really Gary Thorne emoting from deep in his chest and Jim Palmer recapitulating every pitch from his career. If only we could get Squidward Tentacles to coach third and Mr. Krabs to manage the team. Bikini Bottom Magic, See it Happen. But look out for Davy Johnson’s Locker!
The 2009 season has been so long that my SciFi fantasy is for Buck (Elroy Jetson) Showalter to replace Dave (Captain Kirk) Trembley. Though my first choice remains that we open up Davy’s Locker and let #15 back into Crab City. Matt Wieters would gladly switch to #32, now that Jamie Walker no longer needs it on his hunting trips with Chris Hoiles, Ben MacDonald, Will Clark, and Jaimie’s best friend Bob L.

I don't see why the Baltimore media is suddenly making Pie a Star again. Yes he's had a few good games at the bat but he's also had 52 strike outs in only 224 at bats. and 5 in the last couple of days. He's had 1 SB and 3 caught stealing. To me it's still a little early to say he's going to make it as an everyday player until we see some consistency in his game. At 500 ABs he would have over 100 SO's which might be alright for a power hitter but Pie hasn't proved that yet. The local media is suddenly trying to make him out to be the second coming when in reality he hasn't proven more than being a solid fourth outfielder or platoon player IMHO.

Nic,
I do not see the media making Pie a star, he has improved in some areas, but no one has gave him star power. you earn that. Most think he is a fourth outfielder, and that is ok. As Pete points ou,t a lot of bloggers have gone to wanting to run him out of town, to wanting Reimold moved into the infield so Pie can play every day, none of that makes him a star.

Dave Trembley red faced and loud as he was did not approach any of Earl's worse (best) profanity laden umpire run ins 97 ejections (which used to be a MLB record). For starters it was too short ,he should have dragged it out --perhaps kicked clay on homeplate(to cover it) in front of Markakis . He should have turned his cap the way Weaver did to get right in the guy's face. Weaver small in stature but fearless,Trembley's bigger but lacks the gall .Trembley could have thrown his cap ,equipment onto the field and yes been fined but it would have made highlights for sure! Sorry Dave nice try . If he would read and digest "Weaver on strategy" and apply it as best he could in today's enviroment(dumping the hit & run for starters) we might have something , otherwise DAVEY JOHNSON is lurking . Just my thoughts.

CB Coach,
IMHO, Headlines like
"Sorely missed Pie gets a try at batting leadoff " and "O's seek spark with Pie's likely return" and statements such as
" Felix Pie has had time to go from being the most unpopular position player on the team to being the reason some people think the Orioles should move Rookie of the Year candidate Nolan Reimold to first base." is making more out of Pie than he has proven so far. Maybe using the Star word is a little strong but again IMHO, Fiorentino filled in quite well and has continued to hit in the majors so far.
I hope pie does prove that he belongs as a regular but lets not make more out of a few games than just that.
Posted by: Nic | September 18, 2009 2:15 PM
Fritz and besides the highlight film what else would that accomplish? Do you think Dave Johnson is wanted back, or vice versa? It seems to me if he wanted to coach he would have caught on somewhere else. He has had almost ten years of retirement since he managed in the big leagues. If he wanted to manage he would be somewhere, but remember Angelos and he battled often.
It will be interesting to see if Dave Trembley comes back, but who would manage? Really a lot of guys that I was hoping 10 years ago that would one day manage the Orioles, but will not; Dempsey, Eddie, Cal, Billy or Baylor. But who knows if Baylor, because of health reasons will ever be manager again. I understand why Cal would not do it. But I am sure the rest would. Another I would like to see come back and coach would be Al Bumbry.
Maybe Scotty can be the pitching coach, if Captain Kirk is rehired!

I agree, Fiorentino has done well. I find it humorous that people say the Orioles outfield is crowded. Maybe in right field there is a one man crowd, but the other two positions do not seem completely solved. I get a kick out of it. There was a time when the Orioles had a crowded outfield that included Singleton, Bumbry, Shelby, Roenicke, Ford, Landrum and Brother LO. That is my definition of a crowded outfield. Not Reimold., Pie, Jones and Markakis. Not to take anything away from those guys sometimes we over inflate what we really have, as fans, coaches or writers. So I know where you are coming from.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2009 3:00 PM
Hey, do we even know whether or not Reimold can play first base? Has he ever played the bag or any bag for that matter? Can Pie play first?
Are you saying the season is over already? That was quick.
I got another question: why on earth would Minnesota build a stadium without a retractable roof? Opening day a year or two ago it snowed more than a foot there. What are they thinking?

The Twins put in ground warmers, and I hope seat warmers! Since they are not tearing down the Hefty bag, I guess they could move games there, but before the baggie, they had an outdoor stadium.
Yes Reimold played like two innings in the minors and some in high school. PIe forget it, it is confusing for him in left field sometimes, think about how confusing first base will be. I guess we will see how Scott works out. Reimold is 6'4" it would make sense, but really he is a good outfielder, why would you move him, he also has a really good arm, not like Markakis but it is better than the rest and knows what to do with the ball once he gets it..

I can't believe we continue to watch Wiggington plat 1st Base - he's awful there and there can't be any chance he plays there next year. It is just another case of Trembley playing one his favorite guys. Wiggington and Pie continue to play and they didn't even activiate Montanez until they had no choice. All the guy did was win the AA Triple Crown last year and then come to Baltimore and hit 295, but Trembley doesn't like him from their days with the Cubs so he was sitting in Florida while we watched Pie and now AAAA player Fiorentino - even when the lefty Lester is on the mound. Oops sorry had to stop and watch Wiggy boot his 10th ball of the weekend.....

Somebody (Bill James?) must have these stats soemwhere: 1. how many 1-2-3 innings have O's pitchers had this year? Out of how many total innings? My guess is that we have the fewest 1-2-3's in the entire majors.
2. How many two strike base hits have the O's pitchers given up? My guess is that they have the most in the majors.
3. How many two-out runs have the O's pitchers given up? My guess, again, is that they have the most in the majors.
How agonizing that is for fans, and, I'm sure, coaches and players. Whew!

This season has been so long that the Boston Red Sox front office has appealed to MLB to, out of competitive fairness, spot the Orioles 6 runs at the start of each game, and allow the Orioles 4 offensive outs per inning as well as 4 offensive strikes per batter.
Posted by: jamie | September 19, 2009 10:18 PM
This season has been so long that once again the Boston Red Sox front office has appealed MLB to have their post season home games played at their favorite "home away from home", OPACY. Management looks to improve on their postseason chances, siting that their winning percentage is greater at "Boston's away park" than at their current home, Fenway Park, which is starting to feel like a "worn out old glove". The front office also knows their team will have no problem selling out to their fans, since the team has great attendance during the regular season. Plus, Boston's OPACY has greater capacity, allowing more fans to attend. The only drawback is how to name the new home park. The team is divided over two primary choices, RSPACY (Red Sox Park at Camden Yards) and FPACY (Fenway Park at Camden Yards). The name will be voted on by the team following MLB approval.
Posted by: jamie | September 19, 2009 10:47 PM
This season has been so long that for a record third time (in the last hour) the Boston Red Sox front office has appealed to MLB to approve their purchase of the Baltimore Orioles from majority owner Peter Angelos. The sale would keep Mr. Angelos as a minority owner of the team, but would release him from responsibilities of day to day baseball decisions. As a whole, Red Sox management was very, very happy with Mr. Angelos management skills, but thought it in their best interest to control the "baseball end of the business". Contingent upon the sale would be four primary items. First, the Orioles would basically become a "triple A affiliate on the major league level". The Red Sox would treat the Orioles as a "major league farm team", where they could develop talent on the major league level. Second, players could move between the two teams as needed, much like players move from ML to AAA. Thirdly, Mr. Angelos would be completely removed from any baseball operations and descision making. Fourth, the Orioles will guarantee and agree to never finish with a better winning record than their parent club, the Red Sox. The Sox see this as a very strong and necessary move, if they are to be competitive against the Yankees in the AL East.

CAN WE END THIS SEASON ALREADY??
While I do see promise in some of the young players, I hope that we add a couple of first rate position players and a pitcher. Not certain that Tillman is ready for Big leagues yet. May need a bit more seasoning. Matusz will be pretty good next year as will Bergensen. Hernandez, and Berken need a lot more seasoning in the minors.
