Orioles are rocking
How often this year have you seen the Orioles chase a starting pitcher in the fourth inning of the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday? I guess if I had an ounce of initiative, I'd look that up, but why over-analyze things. The Orioles just ran Texas Rangers starter Derek Holland off the mound, thanks in part to a couple of the Sunday lineup guys. Chad Moeller has two hits and two RBI and Jeff Fiorentino has a big hit and two runs.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Guthrie continues his stretch-run salvage project. He looks like a completely different pitcher since he bottomed out in mid-August, and he's got a shutout going in the sixth inning.
Here's a quick stat for you. If Guthrie can complete a scoreless sixth, his ERA will drop below 5.00 for the first time in two months.
There's no World Baseball Classic next spring, so maybe he'll be able to carry this momentum into 2010.

Juan Samuel just caused another out on the bases, sending the slow as molasses Wigginton home on a short hit to right.. Wigginton was out by a mile.
I hope that blunder doesn't cost us. The Orioles and leads have not been a good match this season.

Guthrie is dealing! It's nice to see the O's be capable of playing spoiler for some playoff teams.
As I am watching, they are talking about Omar Vizquel, he has been playing baseball almost as long as I've been alive!

If........
Guthrie is returning to form and carries that into next year....
Bergesen picks up where he left off
Matusz and Tillman continue to improve steadily
the best of Hernandez Berken Patton etc..battle for the 5th spot
We get a legitimate power hitting corner infielder (30-40 home runs)
all other key parts stay healhy (markakis weiters, roberts)....
Those to me are not huge variables and sort of likely......
sorry DT....but a fresh set of coaches especially on 3rd base
playoffs next year?
Why not????
Yeah I know about the yankees and red sox
but can you say Tampa 08

Pete's reply: I still think you need one good veteran starter, emphasis on the word "good."

7 solid, shutout innings from Guthrie.
Now that's encouraging!

The cool-aid must be good in Hawaii

Pete's reply: I'm guessing everything tastes a little better in Hawaii.

well, one can wallow in the past 12 years or one can look ahead with optimism....I choose the latter....
this is not some hyped up front office trying to pull the wool over everyones eyes... these young pitchers look like the real deal and all the scouts and GM's from around the league will tell you such....
you can call it kool aid drinking but it sure beats wallowing in misery and consternation
go O's!!!
playoffs 2010!!!!!!!!!

O's won a Sunday game? Oh wow! I didn't watch the game but was Texas playing their minor leaguers too?
Go O's!

Wow Bill, Nice to see a post like that.
Larry It is just wrong to say cool-aid.
Well where are all the negative guys today? seven more wins and we do not have to see that 100 number. I know it is just a number, but really been too many people wishing for that, and I would love to see that not happen.
Great to see Jeremy Guthrie pitch another really good game. And to see the Orioles get a few hops going their way.

I know, really CB. Hopefully they're out enjoying another Sunday win (there's secretly been a couple lately).
It was good all around to see some guys due for hits get them and Albers and Mickolio work out some of their struggles in a relatively low pressure situation. Kam especially needed to keep that zero on the board.
All in all a great day and I even sold another 50 calendars for the MDSPCA while I was there.

CB Coach: Larry likes to piss and moan. Even when The Orioles play well.

OriAl:
Samuel needs to be replaced, but not for sending Wigginton.
It took a perfect throw, it was a CLOSE play (not out by a mile), and Andino ( batting .222) was up next.

Hey .... Orioles fan from colorado. Thought Baltimorons might like to chuckle about this: in the bottom of the 7th in the Rockies-Diamondbacks game today, Daniel Cabrera has made his Arizone debut: WALK, WALK, DOUBLE, SINGLE, HBP for the first five batters he faces. He has just been taken out. The guy couldn't make the Nationals, for crying out loud, and is embarrassing himself as a D-Back. So much for "giving up too soon."

bill frederick;
I agree with you 100%, but I do not see us sighing high quality free agents this offseason. I hope I am wrong, but it is going to be a tough sell talking about the potential of our young kids coming off a 12th straight losing season with close to 100 losses.
Bergesen, Matusz, and Tillman are going to have to go out and put up the numbers next year for the Os to become a popular destination for free agents.

It is good to see Guthrie come around down the stretch especially against contending teams because in my opinion he will be prime trade bait this off season. The Orioles have invested too much time and money into their young starters to just throw them overboard in some kind of a trade. All those people who now think Guthrie is back had better think again if he is brought back and we go through the same thing again next year. Then everyone will be yelling for managements scalp again. Sorry I think if Guthrie continues to pitch down the stretch like he is then he is trade bait and we may be able to get something valuable for him.

I too am glad to see Guthrie pitch the way he is now against contending teams but for a different reason. In my mind, this will make hime good trade bait for one of those corner infielders we desperately need. The way he was pitching he was no good to anyone but now someone might be willing to gamble he can continue this next season but the Orioles can't afford to chance it. What if he is brought back and has the same kind of a season as this year? Don't think the Orioles will chance it and don't think they want to dangle their young starting pitching as trade bait either. These guys are too hard to find and now that we have them we need to keep them.

Well everyone knows it is Kool-Aid, not cool aid. LOL
But really I grow old of the references to kool aid. Really no one is leading me to drink the Kool Aid, I just believe the Orioles are going in the right direction, yes they are still not where they need to be yet. But really if someone believes that there are good things happening does not mean they are drinking Kool Aid, it simply means they are a fan of the team, and see improvement.
Sorry Pete, I know you mentioned the kool aid in your next post.

I really love seeing Guthrie dominate entire games, it's incredibly refreshing. Not just being Mr Negative, but with rookie pitchers (And our entire recent staff minus Bedard) it never really happens. Good to see that he's not done and out.

Thought I'd send congratulations to Guthrie and the O's for a nice game today.
While a complete collapse would ensure the management, coaching, and certain personel changes I'd like to see; I don't want to see 100 loses any more than anyone else.
The optimist in me says that with such a young team, that a strong finish could be a good start for better things next year.
These players will have their chance against some stiff competition in the last couple of weeks. I hope we can take a few positives away from it, because as others have noted the free agent spending spree will NOT happen this offseason and like it or not this will pretty much be our team again next year.
