Nick makes it stick
The Orioles announced today that Nick Markakis has been named the club's candidate for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given at every World Series to a major league player who represents the humanitarian ideals of the great Pittsburgh Pirates star who was killed in a plane crash attempting to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims.
The club also announced that Nick and Christina Markakis have made a $75,000 contribution to the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation. The donation will be split among the Baltimore RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City) League, Baltimore City Schools education programs and Shannon's Fund.
Lou Montanez update: Montanez will begin a quick injury rehabilitation assignment to Class-A Frederick tonight. He has been recovering from hand surgery and will spend the final regular season home series with the Keys.

Pete's reply: Sorry it didn't meet with your approval, which I crave more than life itself. I wish there were more courageous anonymous posters like you.

Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash?? Breaking news here!!!!!!

Nick's wearing Roberto's number and playing his position. All good stuff.

No problem you just have to work at it Pete.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I work plenty at it. Just thought I'd give Markakis his due. Please go away and don't come back.

Pete -
Thanks for the update.
Unfortunately, it seems to be that a few of your readers don't appreciate ballplayers giving to people in need.
Could you please remove zeke's post? We don't need that kind of crap here.

Hi Pete,
It is a good thing to have players who give back to the community, and Markakis and his wife are to be commended for their philanthropy. If more Orioles players avail themselves to such worthy causes and make themselves avaiable for more frequent public appearences, they can rebuild the team's personal bond with the fan base.
There was a time when the players were quite accesible and responsive to requests for their time.
This is another issue for the warehouse to address as the talent is rebuilt from the bottom up.

I'm amazed at how brutal some of these clowns can be. I hope the whole town is not like this group of a-holes. Beginning to sound like Philly. Great job Nick and Christina. Keep up the good work Pete. Those of us that are not Morons appreciate your insight.

Pete's reply: Thanks very much. There are always going to be a few miscreants on the blog who just want to abuse everybody else. Pay no attention.

Thanks for the post Pete. After all the talk on this blog about what a lousy team we have, it's nice to be reminded that some of these guys actually do give something back. Not everyone in professional sports is a heartless mercenary.
Posted by: Roy | September 1, 2009 4:15 PM
Apparently, some idiots out there don't give a damn, but I remember Roberto C. Of course, his 12/31/1972 death occurred just over a year after he and Steve Blass led the Pirates over the Orioles in the '71 World Series. Actually, a few folks in town were annoyed at him before that Series started because the press quoted him as being critical of the condition of Memorial Stadium's outfield after several Colts games damaged the grass.
But I'm digressing from Nick's recognition. As Gil Jr said, the team needs to rebuild bonds with fans.

Pete:
There are some real numb nuts that post on this site, but more good people who enjoy you insights and live and die as true Oriole fans.
Keep up the good work and congratulations to Nick and Christine Markakis for being classy people and solid citizens.

I didn’t mean to offend anybody with my last post but geez get off your high horse people! The Angelos Orioles have scammed struggling people for years they deserve to give much more back! I thought this was a sports blog not the Orioles PR website.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't see why you feel disadvantaged because I mention a charitable donation. I certainly let posters rip the team unmercifully 24/7, so I doubt you could call it a PR website.
Posted by: zeke | September 1, 2009 4:55 PM
I am actually pleased with the Orioles this year. I've been to more games than any year in the last 5. I'm very impressed with the young talent AM has brought up and hope it keeps up. I can't disagree with any trade he's made. Some have been brilliant some good and some are going to take several years to see if it was worth it. No problem with your posting Pete--hard to come up with stuff sometimes when nothing exciting is really happening. Very proud of Nick M. Roberto Clemente was a great person and any time someone's name is mentioned in the same sentence as his, they should be very proud of themselves.
Posted by: charlie metz | September 1, 2009 5:17 PM
Peter - You seem particularly sensitive today. Don't let anonymous posters bother you. Also, are they really that anonymous to you? Don't they have to post their e-mail? I know I do. One last thing. Are you "Anonymous"? I don't see how that guy can always be the first to post.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I can't explain that, or how "anonymous" has sort of become the guy's name. I do get cranky on column days, because I have to leave the blog unattended for a few hours and invariably somebody accuses me of dogging it.
Posted by: frox | September 1, 2009 5:18 PM
Pay it forward, Nick!
Now, I just want to see a gold glove award deservedly!
Peter, what are roughly the total payrolls of the Yankee$ and Orioles? Any idea what the Yanks pay in luxury tax?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The Yankees payroll is $201 million. The O's is $67 million. I don't have the luxury tax figure.
Posted by: gmac | September 1, 2009 5:20 PM
Zeke, the Angelos Orioles have scammed struggling people for years? Since when have they "scammed" anybody? Are you comparing a baseball team, A BASEBALL TEAM for Pete's sake to thugs like Bernie Madoff or those scam e-mails we all get from Nigeria or Liberia? Dude, get a grip.
The Orioles do quite a bit out there without fanfare, I know because I've seen them. Being nominated for the Clemente award is a big thing, every ML team has a nominee and all sports have their version of the Clemente award and so many more are deserving of recognition. So why not give kudos where due?
It's people like you and some of the other clods that post here that make me wonder why anyone would want to go to the effort to put a winning team on the field. The more I come across you people the more I wish I was still in Florida.
Tell you what, why don't you, "Q", anonymous and some of the other putzs take each other's hands and take a walk in the nearest mine field?
Posted by: ken | September 1, 2009 5:50 PM
I do compare angelos to all those you listed and even worse scum. Hes ruined a once great team and gets suckers to believe each year only to rip their guts out. He is the worst owner in sports.
Posted by: zeke | September 1, 2009 6:00 PM
I predicted that the O's had turned the corner and would take 2 out of 3 from the Yankees this series! It's certainly up hill now because I was banking on a win last night! But it is still possible the O's can beat any team on the night, they have improved that much in my very humble opinion.

Brian Roberts 2B
Felix Pie LF
Adam Jones CF
Nick Markakis RF
Nolan Reimold DH
Luke Scott 1B
Melvin Mora 3B
Matt Wieters C
Cesar Izturis SS
PIE AT 2!!!!!

Pete,
Keep up the good work and don't listen to the rejects. They're just sad because they know the season's ending soon and they'll have to go back to hating themselves since they won't have the o's to direct all the hate towards.
Anyway, I have a question about Adrien Gonzalez...what would a package have to look like for us to get him?
Could we do something like:
1. Brandon Erbe or Steve Johnson
2. Josh Bell
&
3. Either Brandon Snyder or Troy Patton.
That way SD still has a future at 3B and a bunch of decent pitching to go along w/ it, or maybe a decent 1B prospect.
I feel like to O's could live with either of those packages (especially if Reimold could work out at 1B) without taking away anything serious from the future plans and prospects. And, since a lot of those guys came from trades, it makes those deals look even better in hindsight.
What do you think?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't think that would be enough. I think they'd insist on at least one of the big three pitching prospects -- Matusz, Arrieta or Tillman.

People must be pretty bored to bash a post about the Roberto Clemente nomination...

Cesar Itzuris T-shirt night !!!!
Its nights like this when I really miss living in downtown Baltimore the most
Im sure Im never gonna hear the end of this from the NY contingent in my community
Pete you should do an article with the premise that someone has been in a coma since OCT 97 and just woke up to their 1st gm back at OPACY thats filled with SKankee fans.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's not a bad idea.
Posted by: jason c in south florida | September 1, 2009 6:30 PM
John... the AGonzo fantasyland comment was regarding trade offers like that... again, marginal prospects, sub stars, fantasyland hypotheticals, the fact that SD isn't going to trade him... If on the off chance they do trade him, it'll costus about what it took for Seattle to get Bedard... A LOT! They just are there yet.
I think what Nick is doing is great. How long did he wait after signing his big contract to start doing all the charity work? a month? Guy really does seems to care. Too bad about that lousy extra inning debacle making him late for his own fun run. Trembley should be fired for not yanking him so he could get to Patt Park earlier!
Now... back to being angry about everything that moves and erecting a Felix Pie Lifetime Achievement statue.
Posted by: SHAMROCK | September 1, 2009 7:04 PM
BAM! Pie should have played last night!!! Another homer!
Posted by: John | September 1, 2009 7:18 PM
"The Angelos Orioles have scammed struggling people for years they deserve to give much more back! I thought this was a sports blog not the Orioles PR website."
1. What does that have to do with an idiotic comment on Roberto Clemente.
2. The O's give quite a bit to the community. Have they screwed up on some things? Sure. I don't think they should have gone gucci cosmopolitan, but that is what the market wanted.
3. You are right that Angelos is a scammer, but only regarding his law firm shaking down corporations.
4. He has done whatever the fans wanted. Buy FAs in the 90's. Blow the team up and start over. Thats not working, get Miguel Tejada. That didn't work blow the team up again.
Pete... I 'd rather you be a bit of a homer, than a miserable hater. Keep on bloggin' in the free world! (and posting posts, unlike the Raven's writers.)

i'm with you John. How can Pie not play every day the rest of the way? Man, lets see this kid, please
Posted by: onceawarrior | September 1, 2009 7:25 PM
PIE for President 2012!!!!!
If there's a good chance Reimold will need surgery on his Achilles this off-season, why not DH him the rest of the way. Give Pie the everyday job in left and let Scott play at first. Change things up, here and there, but let that be the template for the rest of this season.
Posted by: christian | September 1, 2009 7:29 PM
Pie needs to play the rest of the season.
Posted by: Wayne | September 1, 2009 7:32 PM
Isn't it nice to NOT be paying $18M for Burnett and his 4.13 ERA?
Ugh... I just threw up a little thinking about how ugly that contract is going to look in 2012...
Fearless prediction:
2012:
A.J. Burnett (35): Injured, out for the season
CC Sabathia (31): 12 wins, 4.58 ERA
Yankees: 4th Place
Brian Matusz (25): 18 wins, 3.12 ERA
Chris Tillman (24): 17 wins, 3.30 ERA
Orioles: 1st Place

Fortunately Pete there are plenty of people who care about the stuff the players do...and there are some losers who just feel like sniping from the parents basement. Thanks for the info Pete and keep up the great work - and your diversity in posting material is one of the great things about your posts!

Given Pie's latest success Trembley and Samuel have a real problem at hand. The day before yesterday they met to discuss their plan going forward. It went something like this:
Trembley - Juan, we're in a bit of a pickle with Pie. You told me that your plan to call him out in the press would put an end to his success.
Samuel -- You're right Dave. I thought that calling out a rookie would ruin his confidence level, but it seems like he is on fire.
Trembley -- He is making us look like a couple of clowns Juan. We need to do something. This guy has nerves of steel. We call him out and he keeps hitting home runs. Isn't it something you could do? Give him the wrong signs or something? Get him caught steeling or something?
Samuel -- God knows I've tried Dave, but he stole second and third on the infield hit by Reimold. I don't know what else to do.
Trembley -- This long series of losses is killing me. I need a day offl
Samuel (in a Eureka moment) - Dave!!!! I got it. Give him the day off.
Trembley (light bulb goes off) - You know what Juan, you're onto something. This might even disrupt his hot streak at the plate. He'll play Wed against an Ace like Burnett, and he won't be able to hit for squat.
Samuel -- Absolutely Skip. Then we can go back to blaming our losing season on him again. This jokester thinks he can outsmart us. Everyone will see that he is a fluke and does not belong in the Big Leagues
Trembley - Amen Juan. You hit the nail in the head last week. If it weren't for the expansion the Pie guy would never be a major leaguer.
Samuel -- Skip, who will bat second against Pettitte?
Trembley -- Don't worry Juan. I got this one figured out. I'll bat Izzy second tonight.
Juan -- Izzy? Uh but Skip ... nevermind. Great choice. You're always two steps ahead of the curve Skip.

I love the predictions where Tillman Matusz will be better than Sabathia and Burnett in 2012. But remember, the Yanks will have signed another 2 big-money free agent pitchers by then, relegating CC and AJ to the back of the rotation. That's what baseaball has become, a sport for 7-8 teams to compete every year.
Posted by: Jon | September 1, 2009 8:05 PM
Slugger
That skit was funny but you have to have dave trembley eating or wanting food in it and Juan doing his windmill.

Thanks for the update, Mr. Schmuck. If the Markakises go into the inner city and beat up kids for their lunch money, not one of these anonymous jerks would say that's not news. This is a little throw-away story, and you quite appropriately handled it that way, writing 80 or so low-key words on it. How does it feel to have dozens of supervisors with not one gray cell or testicle among the bunch?
Posted by: Danny in WV | September 1, 2009 8:49 PM
Its time to rethink how we use starting pitchers. They make it 5-6 innings at best these days and the bullpen comes in.
So why just pitch them every 5 days? The standard was every 4 not so long ago. You may as well use the 5th starter in the bullpen since they are pitching near half the game every night.

It is rather disgusting to see the Yankees and all their high priced agents - its kinda like paying for sex, is it not?
Baseball needs a salary cap - I understand that the strong union will prevent this but that would be best for the game.
I have to go to work tommorrow and listen to my damn yankee fan co-worker drone on about this series.......
