News item: Today's column is up
In another act of shameless personal cross promotion, I am posting a link to this week's "News item" column, which appears in today's print editions. You can read it right here, and I hope you like it.
Really, I'm only doing this to buy some time because I have to write my Sunday column on the Orioles and then I have to watch Navy play Ohio State, the Orioles take on the Rangers and Maryland's late-night opener against Cal. Full day of sloth, but I'll try to keep the blog stoked throughout the day.

Comments
Hey, Pete!! this relates to an earlier post about the featured comment. All I have to say is that if the owner's had any guts at all, they would lock the players out, but we know they do not have the stones to do it.

Things are so bad at the paper you have to pimp yourself?
Kind of weird that 3 offensive coordinators were fired in the preseason. I'm not sure when the last time was that even one was fired. It isn't as if you can redo an offense in a week or so. I guess it was personality clashes.
Haley at KC won't last long, just too volatile. Ditto for Ryan in NY. Some guys are just better assistants.

Pete's reply: Has nothing to do with the paper. There are a lot of people who come into the blog without going through the Sun website, so I choose to call attention to my column. But thanks for the gratuitous shot in a bad economy. I appreciate it. I hope whatever business you're in is doing well.

Pete - you know I am an outdoors guy, big hunter, fisherman and such. Even wrote my book "one Man's Close Calls" - would send you a copy if you'd like to read it. So here is a little story that I thin IS the Orioles at this point. A good old salty friend of mine in North Carolina was telling me about when he was a teenager he raised rabbits. He said he put a young female rabbit in a rarrit hutch then went a got a big breeding buck rabbit and put in with it. After a few days he noticed the big breeder chasing the smaller rabbit around and around the cage and finally got the smaller, younger one cornered and or it gace up and - bred it. He left the big buck in with the younger one and saw this scene play out a number of times, the younger one ran and tried to keep the big buck at bay but eventually it GOT what the BIG BUCK wanted! He took the Buck out and waited for the babies to come. Never did, put anothe big Buck back in - same deals over and over. Finally a fellow rabbit raiser came by and he told him of the events. The older friend checked and sure enough the young rabbit was NOT a female. Thus no babies - OOOPS! The Oriole connection is the young Orioles ARE the young rabbit. Fight back, run and dodge and do all they can - but at the end they still get screwed by the big boys!

As an Oriole fan I am not looking foward to the Ravens. I am looking forward to next spring training. Bad baseball is better then no baseball.
Of course it looks to me as if you gave up on the O's in about '05 so not suprising you have a different view.

Pete's reply: It's not for me to give up on the O's are have confidence in them. That's a fan function. I'm just trying to look at the situation and analyze it the best I can. Oh, and I can walk and chew gum at the same time, so I'll enjoy the Ravens while the Orioles percolate this winter.

Thanks for pointing to the column. I have several sports sites bookmarked, and sometimes I miss a link I'd like to see.
And what Lyndon Johnson told a reporter was that Gerald Ford couldn't fart and chew gum at the same time. That age being--at least on the surface--more genteel than ours, the reporter edited the remark. Johnson's biographer Merle Miller revealed the truth, and it does sound a lot more like good ol' Lyndon, don't it?

Pete's reply: It sure does.

Of course you can give up on them Peter.
An example would be the 24th of August when the O's and Ravens both had games. You posted about the Ravens eight times that day. The O's got one post. Not a single mention of the game played that day either.
To me you are telling your readers that you care more about the Ravens.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, I'm telling the readers that I chose to go to the one Ravens game that week along with commenting and blogging on the other six Orioles games. This is primarily an O's blog, but I've always blogged the Ravens on game days. Your tunnel vision is refreshing, however.

Hi Pete, bummer about Ernie Harwell, at least he's had good long run.
As for the Ravens/KC, cheer up Baltimore fans, at least we don't have crappy baseball AND football teams.

Navy down by six early in the fourth quarter. Come on Mids! Any chance to shut up the running at the mouth about the "great" Ohio State by Stanley White. Then again, Navy's already won the battle and once again, Ohio State will still CHOKE in a championship game just like they have the past few years. If they make it that far that is.

Well said Jeff. Everyone knows the Sun loves the Ravens and the "reporters" drink purple kool aid. I'd much rather watch a last place baseball team without any ex cons on the team than watch Ray obstruction of justice Lewis and the Ravens.

Pete's reply: Then you and the Orioles will be very happy together. I choose to watch lots of sports. Have a nice winter.
