Matusz in the rear view

It didn't look like this was going to be a very good day for Brian Matusz, who gave up three runs in the first inning against the Texas Rangers, but he's got poise beyond his 22 years and he collected himself nicely. He got better as the game went on and didn't give up a hit after the third inning on the way to a solid seven-inning performance. He required only 93 pitches and allowed just six hits and one walk, which will cause some consternation if the bullpen gives it up, but everybody knows that the O's are going to handle Matusz with kid gloves. Very encouraging.

Meanwhile, Melvin Mora and Nolan Reimold manhandled Rangers starter Kevin Millwood as the Orioles came from 3-0 and 4-2 early deficits to take a lead into the ninth. Melvin, who struggled for much of the year, has 12 hits in his last 29 at bats (.414) and just got banged up making a terrific diving catch on a bunt attempt by Ian Kinsler int he eighth.

Have to admit I was a little scared, Trembley giving the ball to the bullpen starting the eighth, but Baez and Johnson did a great job preserving the one-run lead. It was also good that they took away the responsibility of preserving the game from Matusz. Aside from the first inning, he dominated one of the hottest hitting clubs in baseball and left with a win. If the bullpen coughs up the win, it might frustrate him, but at least he didn't give up the run going into his last one or two starts of his first season in pro-ball. Probably a real good decision on Trempley's part.

Mora was fantastic all game. The dive was awesome - showed off his goalie skills throwing his body at the ball like that! If Mora keeps up this pace, it'd be nice to see McPhail offer him something to play next year. He and Izturis make a great left-side of the infield, he loves the O's, and maybe he can turn things around and have one more good year in Baltimore.

A great game overall! Not a whole bunch of hits but they worked the count and earned some walks, despite the fact they weren't facing Millwood's best stuff. At least they didn't help him out. They all looked really good. Hopefully, they'll carry this into tomorrow and beat up on Derek Holland who hasn't been great against lefties (.294 BAA). GO O's!!!

It was good to see rebound after giving up three runs in the first.

I bet with Melvin's re-surgance at the plate, he gets a new contract for next year. That way we get to keep his glove in the line-up :)

Pete's reply: Don't hold your breath on that.

Matusz looks like the real deal. Great win.

Wiggy was brutal. Play Aubrey.

I blame Trembley for the win.

A whole six comments after a win?
Matusz looked beastly after that first inning.

Only took until September for Mora to decide to hit again.

If the O's give him another contract then they really need help.

I like that post punk flamingo

I don't care if Mora hits .400 for the rest of the year, I don't want to see him next year. I hope MacPhail agrees.
If he's serious about rebuilding, then Mora is the last guy we need. The guy sulks and his bat has been dormant for 6 months. I'm sure we can find someone else.

Good to see Mora END his time with the O's on a positive note.

Is it me? Or does Reimold seem to get a hit every game...also looks like he is getting his second wind to wind down the season....

"Blame Trembley for the win"...

Almost time to shut down the young guns for the year. Great finish for Matusz. We will have a good, young starting 5 next year but we still need a GOOD veteran to help out....and 2 big bats.

Why is Wig's playing 1st and not Aubrey? Lets see what A can do. Wig's is a backup, remember?!

Nice Game by Matusz today, could have folded like a cheap suit after the 1st, but showed a lot of resilience in shutting down the Rangers line-up after the 3rd. This kid seems to have the tools and the mental make up of an ace, all he needs is a little more time.

I know one comeback win doesn't change this season, but I hope people are starting to realize what we have here in the making. This is a really fun team to cheer for. It wasn't in April, but now that the young arms have been here and shown their promise, I have to say that I am enjoying this squad and am very much looking forward to 2010 and beyond. I know winning will cure all of the whining that is going on in here on a regular basis, but for the 1st time in over a decade, I honestly feel like there is really something to get excited about. I just hope all of you that live near OPACY take advantage of it and fill those seats next year. Go Birds!

A much needed win, and another fine performance from one of our young starters. That is one of the things I'm trying to pin my hopes on. I think your article summed it up nicely, I wasn't expecting much this year, but I was expecting to see some improvement at the end. Instead, I'm heading into this winter feeling largely the way I did last winter, wondering if this team is ever going to stop being "promising" and actually deliver on being a good team again.
This year's end of season collapse pretty much took all the air out of my sails, despite the number of encouraging developments like Matusz and Reimold and Bergesen and others.
We've been " a couple players away" from being a good team for more years than I care to work out. I'm getting so tired of being told that, I just want to see some positive motion in terms of actually winning some more games. If we're just a "couple players away", then find a way to get them, 'cos this Orioles fan is about spent.

I hope Trembly quits after the second to last game. During the post game interview, he can say he quits because this team is full of losers.

It would trump Andy from not renewing his contract after this season. It would also send a wake up call to all these veterans that are comfortable with losing.

If we had Joe Torre, we might have 2 or 3 more wins.

I like the humor among the blogs more after a win.

Especially punk flamingo and Ken.

I'm not sure why Mora is so jacked up this week. He dove headfirst into 1st base the other night too. Maybe he got some?

It seems like Matusz has an innate sense of balance as a pitcher. I can't put my finger on it, but the good ones just seem to have an innate sense of knowing which direction is up. They don't always go their at first, but they have a capacity to self-correct themselves. My take on Matusz so far is that he seems to be a pitcher with an all around game, who just has good instincts. Consider how many pitchers we've seen pass through here and at age 22-23 required a lot of support and defending.

I like Ken's humor too. 2 or 3 more wins if we had Torre? That is very funny indeed.

I didn't see last night's game, but you have to really like Matusz. He reminds me a little of Bedard, maybe not quite the stuff that Bedard has but a much much better makeup. Overall I see his upside as far better than Bedard's was.

Courtesy of Dean Jones's excellent work I noticed that Erbe threw a 7 inning one hitter last night. I realize he's at Bowie, but he seems to be making a serious case for himself. Pete, do you think he might be in the O's mix for next year?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I doubt he will be up that quick, but after this year's promotions, who knows?

A rotation featuring Bergy, Tillman, Matusz, and Erbe in 2010 or 2011 could be quite interesting.

Peter, I'm shocked; shocked I say, to see you write about the failure of the Plan. Now you say it's time to give up some of the stockpile for some injured vet to plug a hole? Two years Peter; that's all the time MacPhail has had to revamp a horrid farm system and organization and now you, of all people are whining like the idiots on this blog about it being a failure. Keep doing what you've been doing Andy MacPhail; keep stockpiling arms and the minors, and don't listen to naysayers who after ONLY two years say it's a failure. Yeah let's go trade our prospects for another Albert Belle, Fred Lynn and Will Clark. Let's trade Matusz, Tillman and Arrieta for Gonzalez! Yeah, that would be a great idea. Pretty sad that even you Peter have joined the whiners club.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I didn't label The Plan a failure. I'm asking whether the plan is to improve next year or the year after, and I'm not clear on that. This team needs a quality veteran pitcher, and I said that MacPhail might have to gamble on a free agent with an injury history. I wouldn't trade prospects for that. I would, however, trade prospects for Adrian Gonzalez or another big bat. Nobody in the player development pipeline has a chance to be a 40-homer guy in the next two years. At some point, you have to fill the holes that can't be filled from within.

Terry, I think Mora got word of what Josh Bell did today at Bowie; two home runs and five RBI.

Mora is trying to get the 3rd base job for texas while Young is hurt.

"He reminds me a little of Bedard, maybe not quite the stuff that Bedard has but a much much better makeup. Overall I see his upside as far better than Bedard's was"

He's also already not as much of a meathead as Bedard was.

Mora is not trying to get the 3rd base job for Texas. That is silly.

Good to see something good happen with this team. See if they can start a streak.

Matusz is going to be our "ACE" for many many years. Yep, I can already see that. Arrieta, Tillman, and Bergy are going to be right behind Matusz for years to come. Z.Britton, Patton, and Erbe can fight for the No.5 Spot.
A future O's rotation of Matusz, Arrieta, Tillman, Bergy, and Erbe/Z. Britton is going to be great, and very fun to watch. The O's will be in contention very soon. Patience, folks.

You can't tell me if theO's had a manager with a personality like Jim Harbaugh we wouldn't be better off. Trembley is just too complacent.Batting Roberts 3rd when he's been hitting 1 something since Aug 23rd is crazy. What is he trying to prove with Pie leading off when he's going to be the 4th OF again next year?

Matuz is going to be good down the road but he's putting too much on himself right now when he doesn't need to.He wants to be in the rotation next year, obviously. He looked totally uncomfortable last night in that absurd oversized uniform.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think comparing a baseball coach to a football coach is apples and oranges. If a John Harbaugh benched every player who made an error, he's have a mutiny on his hands in a few days. Baseball players and baseball rules are just different from football. Now, whether a different personality might motivate the O's better, that's possible, I guess, but you still have to have enough talent to win. They have never had that with Trembley as manager, so it's kind of hard to say what would happen.

Truth be told. I'm all for Josh Bell stepping in next year. We gave up a lot in Sherill to get him so why not throw him into the mix?
No matter what, there's no way there should even be any discussion about bringing Mora back next year. And those posts about him wiggling into Texas' lineup!! I'm sure those were made in jest!
