Markakis on MASN

Gary Thorne interviewed Nick Markakis on the MASN pregame show tonight and got his take on his increasing leadership role on this young Orioles team. Though Nick is not an enthusiastic talker, I was impressed with the way he articulated his desire to help in the development of the growing number of first and second-year players on the roster.

He's not going to be a big rah-rah guy in the dugout, but does lead by example with his patient approach at the plate and his work ethic off the field. Clearly, he gets the fact that he is a cornerstone player and that a lot of things come along with his big contract and growing stature in the organization.

fire trembley

Anonymous,

Have some balls and put your name out there. Constantly saying 'fire trembley' makes you look like an idiot and a jerk.

You likely have the social skills of a chair, and the type of humor that turns the opposite sex off at every turn. I can se you with your one liners now.....constantly being rejected.

Now go to a redskins or steelers blog where you belong loser!

Kakes didnt really say anything. He sounded better than Terrelle Pryor defending his Mike Vick eye black support message. All i know is this team needs somebody to clearly step up and be a leader ASAP.

As the season winds down, and the roster is expanded, why is Trembley playing Wiggington, Scott and Mora so often? And of all people, why is Mora hitting 5th-he of the .359 slugging % and with his 7 HR 40 RBI? Might as well hit Itzuris 5th..
It wouldn't break my heart if all 3 don't come back next year but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Pie!!!

Doug,
There's a reason his ubiquitous cpmment makes him look like an idiot and a jerk. It's because he is an idiot and a jerk. Just like the other names he usually goes by on another blog: Brummie/Jack/...same whiner who can't find a woman so he takes it out on Trembley and the Orioles.

Why did the O's bring Michael Aubrey up? Oh, wait I know the answer. To sit on the bench so Wigginton can play first base.

The O's pen will lose this game

I feel like Kirk in the Wrath of Khan.

ALBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matchups are so overated. It seems like mediocre managers do the righty lefty thing so often just because that's what you are supposed to do.
There are sometimes a lot more important factors that righty against righty, etc...

Please bring in a manager who plays sound statistical baseball and also has good instincts on pitching changes and making out lineups.

Dave Trembley has had two years and I just don't see that 6th sense you need to be successful manager....

of course I know he needs better players, but i still claim he doesn't do the best with what he has.

The lineups many times seem curious especially these last couple weeks with Mora still getting so many at bats...it's just ridiculous

Good job Baez!

Maybe we can use 10 pitchers tonight!!!

That would be so cool!!!!!

maybe kind of dumb but really cool!!!!

bill frederick:

I agree with your points on Trembley there. He has absolutely no feel about managing his pitching.

He said something the other day about the extra arms in the bullpen coming at a good time, since many of the regulars had made lots and lots of appearances this year. Then in this game, he starts playing stupid elementary matchup games in the 5th Freakin Inning. Now he's burned through 4 bullpen pitchers to get 6 outs and let in 4 runs so far.

Honestly not very many could have done better this year, and for that reason he may be back next year, but unless something snaps in his head, I don't see him managing any more in the big leagues after that.

In this bad situation we need to bring in Sean Henn.

"He's not going to be a big rah-rah guy in the dugout, but does lead by example"

We've heard that about way too many guys over the last 10 or so seasons and look what it's got us. We need a leader or leaders who aren't so called leaders by example only.

Pete's reply: People used to say the exact same thing about Cal Ripken.

screw it!!!! LETS GO RED SOX CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP YEAHH BOY!!!!

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

we have augered in...

I am so sick of this losing mentality we have. Yes, I know we are overmatched. But, when we have a chance to win a game, could we cash in once in a while? Of course not. The other team's bullpen can get our best hitters to choke ourselves out of a big inning, and then our bullpen and our manager can do everything wrong. I am really impress with those four pitch walks. We are losers, and it will continue until Trembley and every one of these coaches are gone. Every one! By the way, the loser mentality has migrated south to the Rays as well. They are faring as well as we are lately. However, I am sure they have next Monday circled on their schedule. By then they'll have an 11 game losing streak, but they will still kick our butts. We are everybody's cure for what ails them.

I recently moved back up to blow-sox territory and this is so painful. Actually I live half way btw blow sox and yankers.

Does it seem like that historic 9-run come back of ours was 5 years ago?

I love red sox nation!!!!

ok, would it have really hurt anything to let castillo pitch a couple of innings?...I mean really....one batter....then we play the dating game...

This is not hindsight.....matching up IS EASY AND OVERATED. if a guy comein and has good stuff....you mean to tell me he can't throw to 5 or 6 batters????

No, because then we don't get to see how good the manager is by bringing in a new pitcher for every batter

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Now I feel better....sigh

I love Varitek so much it hurts.

Me too Doug. Lets go out sometime

Really?? Why pull Hendrickson after he strikes out David Ortiz? Gary Thorne mentioned that Bay is 2 for 13 or 14 against Mark, but 1 for 2 against Baez. Yes, if Baez strikes out Bay, no one complains, so maybe this is just all in hindsight. But what's going on? Hendrickson's been pretty good out of the bullpen, not just against lefties but, also, in long relief. Obviously, we can't be too worried about preserving the bullpen with 13 or 14 guys out there, but we did use Ray and Bass last night and some of the others got knocked around a bit. Why the hell won't we leave a guy in if he's pitching well?!?!? Maybe it's good to give a few of the call-ups a shot, but this isn't Spring Training. We don't have to use as many players as possible each game. As hit-or-miss as our bullpen's been recently, IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!! I don't think I'm being irrational saying that Trembley cost us this game. Yeah, if Baez hadn't walked Lowell or if he'd pitched better, maybe the game would still be tied. Or maybe if the guys had been able to score more runs with the bases loaded, we might be winning. Yeah, the players are the ones out there, but the manager acted and now should take responsibility for a poor decision. LET THE PLAYERS PLAY!!! If someone gives up THREE HOMERS by the second inning or is overall INEFFECTIVE, PULL HIM!!! Otherwise, LEAVE HIM IN!!!

Trembly should pinch run for Wiggington and pinch hit for Izturis?

Bill Frederick, Earlier today in response my comment that the Orioles shouldn't trade Jones, because Pie could be a bust like ex-Bird Corey Patterson, you turned the tables and asked me what if Jones turns out to be the new Patterson. Fair question.

Well, if Jones stuggles then the Orioles can see if Pie is the real deal. Should that be the case, then they can make Jones the fourth outfiellder or get rid of him. No big deal.

But if they deal Jones now and Pie flops, then they have a huge problem, the kind of dilemma they don't want to have. Better to stockpile until things shake out instead of forcing things.

Why should they deal Jones before they know exactly what they have with Pie? It doesn't make sense and is ultimately just too big a gamble for a rebuilding team.

This team is just the worst-another game another loss. We are the Bad News Bears (Pre getting their act together) of the American League East.
The players on this team and the coaching staff should be ashamed. It is to the point when you are shocked if the team wins.

I hope this is the rock bottom: 100 losses and pathetic performances every night. Even Jim Hunter, aka Bagdad Bob, could not make this pile of garbage smell good. Of course, with this team each time you think it cannot get any worse it does.

For the longest time, the Nemesis of the O's has been pitching, whether it be starting pitching or the bullpen. I would not trade any of the current staff or the pitching prospects, the Brian Davis trade still lingers in the memory banks. The Yankess and Red Sox are not changing their ways, and MLB is not going to move the O's to a subset division of the AL East so they can compete.

We need to know who is head strong enough to pitch in the AL East. Berken was given up on halfway through the season, it appears he might have figured it out, and now be able to at least survive? I would have left him in to finish the 6th, just to see if he could make it through.

Bill and the rest of the coach killers,

I disagree strongly. What are you going to do?First as you know and every other person that is blogging on any system should know is that Dave Trembley did not pick this staff or the rest of this team. It is pretty easy to coach when you have Billy Wagner to setup Papelbon. Really easy to manage, when you have a stud catcher on the bench. Give me a break, get off of the talk that Trembley does not know how to handle pitching. He has kept the young guys healthy and has broke them in well.

I am not saying that Trembley is perfect but he is far from the problem. Take the Redsox everyday line up, take their rotation, take their bench and take their bullpen, match it to ours and I dare you to pick one Oriole that does not have the last name of Markakis over one of the Redsox players. Guthrie could fit into the 5th spot in the rotation for them.

Face it guys the Orioles do not have the horses that the Sox or Yankees have.
IT IS NOT THE MANAGER!

You guys think you know something about pitching? More than a major league manager and a pitching coach that has had the success ours has had? Your coaching is only as good as your talent that you coach*just ask Leo), believe me that is the way it is and how it has always been. Look we have run off like 8 pitching coaches in 12 years, cannot count the numbers any more and I do not want to. The young arms we have will take a few more years to be able to have a lot of success. This is the path the Orioles have taken. When they came out of spring training with the staff they had we knew it was not going to be a chance in hell that we would compete. What makes you think it is the manger, Eaton, ,Hendrickson, Koji Simon have you guys forgotten that. Our bullpen was shaky also, Walker, Baez and Ray were coming off major surgery, Akbers pitching with a tear in his shoulder, I can go on for hours.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I am tired of hearing the coaches are at fault. Really the Yankees and Redsox are so damn good, they could coach themselves and they would still be in first and second.

Do you guys go to work everyday and complain about the same thing? Bad boss, bad job or bad bowling team. Whatever it may be, you guys say the same thing every night and it gets old.

Some of you guys are probably right Trembley may not be renewed for 2010, but really if they do not go out and get a number one and two starter, three new guys that can pitch out of the pen and a guy that can drive in the runs, whoever the manager may be, you will attack his knowledge and his credibility.

Please guys understand that the owner and General Manager have more control over how good a team will be than the manager, base coach or pitching coach. Look at this way, the Redsox wanted a very good lefty out of the pen, they get Wagner, we get Sean Henn.
There have been some good things this season. Pie showing he has some potential, Reimold showing he has some talent, five new starters, Weiters getting to play daily, but we are just very short on talent, and the Yankees and Redsox are not. .

CB Coach, Thanks for providing a voice of reason. One slight difference of opinion. You talk about the need for the Orioles to get a run producer. While I think that's a good idea, I also think that we're going to see both Reimold and Wieters grow into that role next season.

Sean Henn? Oh, yeah, he was married to Fadonna. Right?

I've gotta say I agree with CB Coach. I've been a fan of this team since 1981. '83 was great some of the 90s were nice, since then, it's been a tough road. People used to want to play in Baltimore, now it seems no one wants to, unless they come up through the system or come in trades. Let's remember that the Orioles did go after Vlad, they went after Texiera. They've made some good efforts at signing people, but no one will come here until there is talent, it's a Catch 22. Our only hope is to continue to draft well and develop from within. When the talent shows we will be able to draw free agents. Signing mediocre (complementary) free agents is all we are in the mix for now (Wigginton for example), I think that's why we've been so bad for so long is that we simply haven't been able to sign anybody decent to this team for quite some time. The last time I remember the O's really having an effective free agency was when the year they signed David Wells (the first time), I think they signed or traded for about 3 or 4 pretty players that year, that helped propel the team into the playoffs (I'm talking about the Robbie "Spit" Alomar era of the team).

We've gotta be patient, as my handle expresses I'm from Portland, OR. My Blazers had to get pretty awful, before they could get better. I think baseball is tougher to grow then basketball, maybe Paul Allen could buy the team from Angelos. Tho' it seems Angelos is doing right by the team these days.

I agree and hope one day they fill that role. They are both real good young men with lots of talent, but I do not think that anyone would want them to have to be the cleanup hitter yet. They need someone with experience that has a proven track record. That will be a tough job for MacPhail to find the right guy, hope he succeeds.

CB and others,
The front office doesn't make dumb pitching moves and make out ridiculous lineups...not saying they would be a 500 team...
I'm saying a manger can lose you 5 games a year Trembley fits that bill pretty good..
next year we may need those 5 wins.

you can evidence being a good or bad manger on good and bad teams if you know what I mean

just see Petes next post...
matching up with this bullpen is incomprehensible

CB:

You make some good points. I haven't been a huge Trembley basher all year, because I realize like I think the majority of fans do that he wasn't given much of a chance to succeed. Of course when the players perform well, the manager looks like a genius. And this group doesn't have as high a chance to perform well as other teams with better pitchers, so Trembley is left looking like a moron more times than he deserves.

But the 5th and 6th innings tonight epitomized why so many people DO rag on him for his questionable decisions. The most egregious one in my opinion was taking out Hendrickson, who was bad as a starter but outstanding out of the bullpen. Which was mostly in long relief situations, where he got both left- and right-handed batters out.

3 days ago he mentioned that many guys in his bullpen were overused this year. So if someone like Hendrickson with the ability to go a few innings comes in pitching well like he did, why take him out after throwing 6 pitches?

I think that Trembley's option will be picked up, and we will see him lead these young guys again next year. With the experience they've gained this year, they should hit the ground running out of spring training and hopefully play well. If the team starts to tank, I could see MacPhail making a mid-season change... though If this happens I doubt the interim guy is kept on. At that point I think he would go get his own guy.

Anyway this is getting way ahead of what's important at this juncture, which is trying to win a few more games this year. Or, barring that, getting to pick Bryce Harper as the number 1 draft choice next June.

Jeff,

I agree sometimes guys over think the game. But at the same time it is audition time, and the team needs to find out in the next three weeks what they have (even though I am sure that MacPhail has seen enough) to go into 2010 with. Baez throws something besides a belt high middle of the plate pitch, no one would have cared, but he did not do his job. I do like having a lefty that can get people out, that is why I was so upset about Sherrill being shipped out. Maybe they are trying to get the Harper pick, but who knows he could simply turn down and enter the draft for 2011. It has happened before.

They play two good games, two bad games. It is what it is a undermanned team. And it is very obvious that they have a lot of work to do this off season.

Pete's reply: People used to say the exact same thing about Cal Ripken....and Cal played on a lot more losers than he did winners. Not trying to be blasphemous.
