Luke's launch

Don't know about you, but I wish MASN had a stationary camera fixed on Eutaw Street, so we could see where the long home runs land. Luke Scott's mammoth three-run home run looked like it had a chance to become the first ball ever to hit the Warehouse on the fly in game action, but there was no camera angle that showed where it landed.

If it had, we'd know by now. The O's get a report from the ushers and other witnesses out there and embed a brass baseball in the concrete where the ball landed, but it would be nice to know right away. I realize there would be some expense involved in an extra camera, but I believe the Giants do it in San Francisco to for homers that land in McCovey Cove.

Bad baseball update: Adam Jones just got away with a real bad fundamental gaffe, his throw on Alex Rodriguez's game-tying single sailing well out of reach of the cutoff man and allowing Rodriguez to move into scoring position. Fortunately for Jones and the O's, Chris Ray struck out Jose Posada to get out of the inning with the score still tied.

The only real problem is that home runs on Eutaw Street happen so infrequently (the most in any single season is seven, done twice) that it would not really make sense for a dedicated camera.

Besides, as you mention, if it did hit the Warehouse the people on the street would tell the Orioles, and they would let everyone know.

I do think when someone finally hits it during a game it might actually be a bit disappointing. There's something really interesting about how close the building is to the field and how the wind patterns make it just short of impossible to get a shot that far out in that direction.

Not that I don't want to see Scott or Markakis or Wieters break a window...

camden yards looks like a wiffle ball park tonight..........

Luke's launch, Markakis this, Jones that..... Doesn't it get old Pete that your blog hardly ever points out an O's win? Instead, it's about saving young arms for the future or Pie has blossomed (into mediocrity). When they shut Tillman and Matusz down, leaving us to watch what's left of the farm, will fans get a substantial discount? I mean I 'get' shutting them down, but to put out what's left is.....well, simply embarrassing. Question: When DT gets fired, what will the media spin be about the genious plan? Can't wait for that one! Oh and by the way, how many Yank launches have there been since you wrote about Luke's? They may not have threatened the warehouse, but they'll lead to a W......something O's fans wouldn't recognize if it bit them in the ____.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It sure does get old, but it is what it is and this is a predominantly Orioles blog, so I'm going to keep writing about what happens and hope -- for the sake of the fans -- that the plan really works. I don't know that it will, but it might, which is more hope than there ever was during the early half of this decade. What I find really comical, however, is the blog fans who call the GM "McFail" because he didn't snap his fingers two years ago and turn a chronic losing franchise into the Yankees. Whether this is the right plan or not, whatever had to be done would have taken longer than this.

If you really wanted to know the answer, you could find out all the discounts and promotions being offered in September.

But I guess it's just easier to whine and act like you care when you obviously don't want to.

If the Orioles would have signed Adam Dunn and had him DHing, playing first and platooning with Scott in Left, that camera would have been a much more worthwhile investment.

At least Waring has a HR, double and 5 RBIs in his AA debut.

I saw Big Walter Young hit it in BP when he was here.

But yeah, maybe fix a camera looking out from that walkway up there.

DJ,

Come on man, all those September discounts and promo's are offered because there is NEVER a reason for fans to show up in the fall. That's not whining, complaining or anything else you'd like to say.....it's simply a fact! You know it, Pete knows it, and all the ushers making so few tips know it.

Now let's watch for another Luke launch. Maybe the O's will lose by only 2. That way, all the happy talkers can comment on individual efforts instead of W's.

Wayne,
The only thing that gets old is the incessant whining of people like you.

Pie has batted .362 since June 24 and the scary part is that he's still developing. His power and plate discipline have both been growing by the day- four home runs in his last seven games, eight walks in the last month (after just 10 all year before that). Clearly you need to look up the meaning of mediocrity, since any team in the majors would be thrilled to have such productivity.

It does make sense to shut Tillman and Matusz down and if you don't like that, don't go to the game. It's really that simple! Nobody wants to hear your whining, so just take the 100% discount and STAY HOME.

This team is turning a corner and the future is bright, and we don't need know-nothing pessimists like you ruining the good time. If you lack the patience to wait, or the wisdom to appreciate what's going on, go be a Yankees fan. They're all about immediate gratification, which should suit you well.

Hey Andrew,

Another L baby, another L.

I know Pie's numbers lately.....just like I know the individual performances of other Orioles.

Continue buying the hype. You were surely doing the same during the rebuilding efforts of 98, 00, 01, 03, 05, 06, 08 and now......

Here's where you explain how it's different now though.......The LeeMac 11 year Cub plan.

Another L baby, another L!

Enjoy watching the replay or Luke's Launch over and over tonight though!

Wayne,
Turn the channel, pick a different team. Go be a Yankees fan!

It's obvious that the Orioles franchise is rotten from top to bottom. Your contempt for everything associated with the team, from the ownership to other fans to the sportswriters trying to write something to entertain you with, is well-documented. It is clear how much disappointment and frustration watching the Orioles brings you, partially because you are clearly more baseball-savvy than anyone else within 100 miles of Camden Yards.

So just cut your losses and go root for the Yankees, or Red Sox. This is an obvious win-win, since you will no longer have to deal with something that is a cause of such suffering in your life, and the rest of us won't have to deal with you.

Andrew,

They'll be replaying the latest O's loss on MASN later tonight. Since you're enjoying the ride so much, I recommend it highly!

And by the way...the 'go root for the Yanks/Sox' rant is tired and old. It's not about them anyway Andrew - but you don't see that.

Besides, I don't need to root for the Yanks as there were enough at Camden tonight.... It's just good seeing fans having fun at the Yard again, even if they were from NY.

Another L Andrew, another L!

Back in the early 90's they used to have a camera on top of the warehouse in right field.

What they should do, is put a mini camera somewhere attached to that elevated crosswalk on Eutaw Street that connects the warehouse to the club seats in right field. That definately would show where each homer on Eutaw Street would land.

Talk about expenses??? The O's can't even put a radar gun for the kid pitch. For years everyone is told it is broken, what a joke. How much do they cost? So much for bettering the atmosphere for kids. i don't think they'll put a camera to see homeruns. pete tell them to get a radar gun for the kids, they use to love it.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I agree with the sentiment, but I hope they don't get a radar gun for the kid-pitch. I don't think they should have a kid-pitch, unless they're trying to drum up business for the orthopedic surgeons in the area. "Hey, it's a cold night in April and you haven't thrown a ball all year. Take this baseball, don't warm up, and throw it as hard as you can at that target." Great idea.

Shutting down your stars of the future when they are young during the ending of another meaningless September is the right thing to do. Want to see them at a discount? Go to Frederick, Bowie and/or Norfolk. That's what I did.

I'll admit "fun" was in short supply (but not absent) going to the Pettitte masterpiece game, but the Orioles are going in one proper direction--growing their own players on the farm. I think there are other directions to pursue, but at least do this direction correctly.

If anything, I thought they brought up their "future" too soon as it was ... but I was not surprised by that given the lack of quality in the 37-arm approach back in March.

This offseason may be fairly barren as far as free agents are concerned. (When they are available is never a guarantee anyway.) Let's see how creative MacPhail gets.

BobbyWoontz, that was Home Team Sports, the channel you cheer for. Not only do we get the woeful MASN we get a poor puppet show to boot. I mean I can see Jim Hunter's lips move when Peter Angelos speaks.

And since we are griping, what's the deal with Oriole Park selling Yankee crap? I don't care if I was the only Oriole an there (I wasn't, there were other loyalists). THAT should NEVER stinking happen. NEVER!

(A customer complained a cap said "Oriole Park at Camden Yards" and not just "Camden Yards." TOO STINKING BAD! Go to NY and buy a $3,000 seat and a cap.)

Of course, the sale of a handful of JETER shirts could pay for a Eutaw Street camera. Nah! We'll file it for future free agents in the Hip Pocket National Bank.
