The Schmuck stops in LA

I’m headed out to Los Angeles today to attend to some personal business and to escape the torch-bearing mob that almost certainly would have been waiting for me in Baltimore now that I’ve come out in favor of retaining Dave Trembley.

So, if you’re looking for me – and I mean you, Bob – you’ll have to fly west and guess which In-And-Out Burger location I’ll be frequenting over the next couple of days.

From California, I’ll be headed to New England this weekend for the big game between the Ravens and Patriots, so I won’t be back until the Orioles season is over. And it won’t be long after that before we know for sure whether the O’s will pick up Dave’s contract option.

Today’s WBAL plug: Former Ravens receiver Qadry Ismael will be filling in for me tonight at six on Sportsline (WBAL 1090AM), and you can stick around for “Ravens Report” with Qadry and Jerry Sandusky at seven. Greg Bianco will take my place tomorrow night. I’ll be back on my regular radio schedule on Tuesday.

4x4 monster style?

Pardon me, Pete, but isn't Sandusky's first name spelled "Gerry"?

Keep up the good work, and I agree with you about DT. He did what he could with the hand he was dealt.

That's alright Pete, the torches will keep, and so will the matches, we'll keep an eye out for your return;)

I cant believe the Indians have fired a playoff winner Eric Wedge and the Orioles still have Kirk

i like the fire you displayed in that face off with cowherd. any interest in managing a major league club?

Just read your article about firing Trembley. You are such an Trembley apologist that it makes me sick to my stomach. I barely made it through the article. Your argument about consistency is irrelevant when judging a manager's in-game decision-making. Why keep a manager whose feel for the game is as questionable as Trembley's. I don't care what kind of talent you have, a manager can still be evaluated based on how Trembley conducted himself while the games were being played. He did a piss-poor job this season and should be fired as a result. Fresh start at manager with fresh young faces in the lineup next season. That is all.

Israel, LA......blah, blah, blah.......

You're just looking for excuses not to have to watch the O's swoon. (OK - I'll give ya N.E. for the Ravens games)

Didn't your doctor tell you that you shouldn't be jet setting around the world in those cramped airline seats right after recovering from an achilles injury?

But seriously, I say *gulp* keep Trembley and fire ALL of the coaches and let him pick his own. Just one rule, he can't hire ANY of them back. (ie. Crow or Kranitz)

Pete, I have no problem with you defending Trembley, my only question is who in the world is going to replace him that's going to do so much better next season?

I still think the Orioles should make a run at Bobby Valintine as manager if Trembley is let go. But I don't think it will make much of a difference in the W/L column. I don't see how another manager will solve anything, at least for this season.

Issue with new manager same as with free agents - no one with above average ability will come here to lose (games, their job, and reputation) - maybe not even if O's way overpay.

My issue with Trembley is more with vets laying down - stupid mistakes (Wigginton baserunning again last night) and lack of hustle - but not sure what would be achieved with another retread in charge. Next year will be another 5th place result regardless so I think it all comes down to how AM thinks the young guys will respond to DT.

Besides, I think it's even worse to just keep changing managers every other year - does anyone really think the results would have been different with Perlozzo (or Dave Johnson or John McGraw)?

JAS,

I agree with you. It also makes me sick to my stomach with the Sun's so called writers that use the website and sports columns kissing up to people with the sole intention of expanding their social and professional network.

There is no reason other than that as to why these yahoos won't show whatever bit of integrity they have left and tell it for what it is.

Use some constructive criticism, instead of playing to Andy MacPhail damage control tunes all season long. It has gotten old. Take your Angelos knee pads off and show some integrity Sun writers.

How can you defend anything Trembley, MacPhail or anyone in the O's organization has done this year? You don't have to agree/disagree with me. The fans have spoken. Look at the attendance in the games. It will only get worse.

Saddam Hussein would have probably won the war if he had a Ministry of Information comprised of the Sun beat writers.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Is it possible that I just don't agree with you? Is it really necessary to challenge my integrity? This blog allows you to say pretty much whatever you want. That's going to have to be enough, because I'm not here to give your opinion. I'm here to give mine.

Hi Pete,

Great idea to stay out of town ostensibly until the season is over! First to Israel and now to the West Coast. It's pretty sad when even our sportswriters can't stomach it any longer.

I am going to do my penance and attend Friday's game, along with another couple hundred prepaid suckers.

I'll be the fan in section 64 with the bag over his head.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Have a good time. My son will be representing me there.

Put my guess down for the In-N-Out in Tustin in the O.C.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Which one in Tustin...because you're very warm.

It is my hope that we don't see video tape of Pete eating his In and Out burger off of the floor of some seedy LA police precinct station!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think that's a plausible scenario.

Your points in defense of Trembley are fine and can't really be disputed, but even before the collapse and setting aside the lack of depth or talent and the gaping holes which made his job harder, what about things like the constant baserunning mistakes or lineup juggling that never allowed anyone to find a groove? I get he was trying to spark things, but it's a lame excuse. How many months were Huff and Mora in the 4, 5 spots while Scott was white hot and Reimold was the only other player on the team besides Scott going yard? What about Jones at 2 and Markakis at 3 when clearly that should be reversed and they should get used to it? He's just not a good manager and your argument presupposes that with talent, he would be. You mention Lasorda...are you kidding me? You really believe that with the right roster, Trembley is the next Tommy Lasorda? That's where your argument goes off the rails for me. Look at the Rays and Joe Maddon. His name came up as well. He came from a winning club, having learned from a great manager in Anaheim. That's what we need. What about someone like Don Mattingly who won't get his chance in NYC now and has been learning behind Torre for all these years? The players would both love and respect him. I agree that this finish isn't Trembley's fault. There isn't a manager alive or dead who could win with the team we are putting out there right now, but Trembley's fate was sealed a long time ago...in my opinion....and it's time to move on.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don Mattingly is an interesting name, I have to admit. If you want the next Joe Maddon, however, it would be Ron Roenicke, who is the current bench coach under Scioscia. But I wasn't blowing smoke when I used Maddon as the example in my column. He was very much a Dave Trembley type in the Angels organizaion.

You either have the talent to compete, or you don't. Why blame the manager when the talent doesn't meet the standards of play set by other teams in the division. If the Trembley managed O's had won half their games this year then you'd be forced to classify him as a genius. The 09 Orioles had no starting pitching to speak of, limited power in the middle of the lineup, sporatic defense, and a suspect bullpen. Trembley didn't put this team together. Let's say for the sake of argument that, in 2010, MacPhail gets him a couple of quality starters (they're out there in the FA market this year), a power hitting catcher to DH and backup Wieters (Jake Fox?), a cheap, young, power hitting first baseman (Garrett Jones?), and a couple of relievers who know what they are doing on the mound. If Trembley is provided with these player additions and doesn't produce a winning record, then we should complain about him. Right now, no manager, except for maybe the late Billy Martin, could have produced a .500 season with the current Orioles' thin talent base.

Keep making them sick Pete.

I'd still rather not be staring at 100 losses, but this team needs Free Agents, then worry about the manager. It's all just lipstick on a pig otherwise.

Jay,

Thin talent base? What kind of baseball have you been following? You don't think Markakis, Jones, Roberts, Weiters, Reimold, Bergeson, Matusz, Tilman, Sherrill, Johnson, Guthrie have talent?

Trembley did not chose his players, MacPhail did, but he puts the lineup together, and he is the guy responsible for getting the players to play the game right.

He is the one who pulled a starter when he is having a great game and start the bullpen musical chairs to see who would be the reliever du jour to blow the game up.

He is the idiot who kept Huff and Mora in the lineup when they did not deserve to be in any MLB lineup.

He is the only manager I know who would bench guys like Pie and Reimold while they're hitting home runs every other night.

Trembley is not a minor league career manager by chance. That's where he belongs. Sure a great team such as Yankees would probably make a turd like Trembley look polished, but the O's have underachieved in a year when they were expected to show real progress, and that lies squarely on Trembley.

This core of players that you think are talentless, will be the ones going to the playoffs in years to come, and fans like you will probably attribute that to Trembley when that day comes.

Give me a break.

This is hilarious. The Orioles are about to eclipse 100 losses, and the Orioles blogger skips town.

Surprising? Not really. Kind of captures the overall feelings of the city toward its embarassingly bad baseball franchise = total apathy.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, I skipped town for a funeral, friend, so it's not really funny, but I get where you're coming from.

I simply do not get the whole Trembley debate at all. It truly is a mystery to me.

Wether or not he had good players I don't understand why everyone can't take that out of the equation and judge him by how he's performed HIS duties as manager. Besides the final numbers in the win/loss columns, there are so many other ways to evaluate his performance. You can not deny the fact that he's made mistake, after mistake after bad decison, after mistake this year. Combine that with his lack of fire, leadership, presence, or ability to inspire and/or teach and I can't understand why we're even talking about this.

Maybe I'm just so jaded and I can't stand the man for some reason that's unique to me personally, but I really don't think that's the case. I believe that concerning matters in which Trembley or any other manager has the ability to influence the game, that his contribution was consistantly negative, stubborn and foolish.

Hey Pete is it DT's funeral? That got moved to LA? I thought it would be here in Baltimore....

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Now, be nice.

Sorry Pete. Wasn't to be taken as an attack on you. More like "not even the blogger is going to be around when they lose 100". A funeral is another matter altogether.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No problem. I knew what you were trying to say and I did play it for laughs in my entry about it. Wasn't trying to shame you.

How the hell did Dave Trembley not get fired before Eric Wedge??!

I can’t believe we missed out on Sano! Baseball needs to institute a salary cap immediately. The Orioles can simply not contend with big money juggernauts like the Minnesota Twins. We can’t win against big time markets like Tampa, Toronto or Cleveland. This cap needs to happen soon because gosh darnit we need it to be good again!!!!

James C.

A lot of hot air is expended on this blog, including mine. You just captured the root cause of the collapse and the antidote in one sentence.

Unless Peter Angelos and Andy Macphail heed those words we will be having the same conversation this time next year.

Since the Mayan Calendar ends on December 21st 2012,
there is some sense of urgency for Angelos and Macphail to act on your suggestion within the next 24 months.

Baseball needs to make more rules to protect the fans from dictator bad owners. If an owner does 12 years of questionable things they should have to come to Selig and answer some questions and give briefs on how the team is headed into a better direction. If not MLB steps in and takes the team away. If fans petition every year for 12 years MLB should maybe investigate what is going on with this team. If teams make bad trades and field AAA teams but charge ridicules prices it needs to be investigated. We all know the issue here people. Peter Angelos is dead weight and keeps us years behind baseballs power curve. Every team with the exception of the nats (which he is connected to) seems to get it more than we do. Angelos needs to sell the team before it gets better.

One thing I've noticed is that former catchers make pretty good managers, because they know and understand the pitching side of things and can best relate to all players on the 25 man roster. I like DT, but it has been extremely rough since July. Maybe, a strong free agent veteran player can help things. The question is, has DT been given a fair chance with this youth movement. Anyway, speaking of former catchers who are managing in different levels hoping for a chance are John Stearns and Gary Carter. Chris Hoiles may even be worth a shot. But please, no Manny Acta - we seen that act.

Welcome home, Pete. Too bad it is not under happier circumstances. My condolences to you and the family of the deceased.

I'll keep my eye out for you at the In 'N Outs.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks very much. Somebody here predicted I would be at the one in Tustin, and he wasn't far off.

I always wonder where the lack of fire comments come from regarding the manager...just because he chooses to sit down during the game? Joe Torre sits during the game, so does Bobby Cox...they've won a little. Tremblay is fun to watch when he unloads on an umpire...its like the Miguel Tejada is a cancer in the clubhouse talk...no player ever said anything publicly, and 1 out of the other 24 would've said something. Should DT be fired? Probably along with the whole coaching staff. The youth movement is going painfully slow but its going and a new manager, not a yeller and a screamer but someone who holds players accountable, is what the Os need. You don't want to run out a ground ball, you sit. Joe Maddon did it to BJ Upton twice last year and didn't yell at all. Just talked to him, explained what he expected, and sat him. When he failed to meet the expectation, he sat him again. Simple. Next year could be rough as there simply isn't a plethora of FA starting pitchers available. The bullpen can be rebuilt with some of what we have here, and some of what we don't. To compete in the AL east the Os need a lineup that has Reimold hitting 2nd (he'd hit 5th in the NL) and Jones hitting 6th or 7th. An order of Roberts, Reimold, Nick, CLEANUP, Weiters, Jones, etc looks tough although i'd like to see another stick hit 5th and push everyone down a spot.

The Indians just made a great manager available.

If Trembley is fired, Eric Wedge should be at the top of the O's list for a new skipper.

Good debate on Trembley, although I had assumed his future was a moot issue months ago. I don't know what the odds on his return would be, but I'd have to guess it's a long shot.

I agree that in the major leagues talent is the most important driver of performance, manager quality can inflect this up or down but overall performance is still anchored to the underlying talent base.

I would not argue for Trembley's ouster based simply on the W-L record, recognizing that he's had to play the hand he was dealt. However, I do think there are meaningful, justified reasons why Trembley should be replaced, starting with his failure to instill discipline, smart play, and discipline in his players, and ending with his weak in-game management (with a number of other reasons in between). I also think a new manager would have signal value to the fans and players, and help everyone psychologically turn the page and start fresh in 2010. I don't agree with all the "Hire Davey" mob that there is a far superior candidate out there- but by now Trembley is a known quantity, and we have to at least see if we can do better.

Why can't MacPhail thank Trembley for his service, pay tribute to what he has contributed to the team's turnaround efforts, and part amicably? I think a press conference might go along the lines of "two and a half years ago we began a comprehensive rebuilding plan, with the goal of turning around this franchise from the bottom up and position it to be a sustainable contender in the AL East. Though the last two seasons have been difficult, we have reason to believe this club's upward trajectory will begin in 2010, as we planned... Our front office is finalizing its plans for an active off-season, when we expect to add key pieces to the base of talent we've secured over the past two years... One critical element of this is to put in place a leadership and coaching team that is well-aligned with the team's current position and our expectations for the next 3-5 years and beyond. When we hired Dave Trembley his job was to do X, Y, and Z to help our rebuilding over the last 2.5 years, and he has made many important accomplishments. His tenure with the Orioles, as measured by what we asked him to do, has been a success...."

That is to say, why not thank the man for being a good placeholder for the last 2+ years, recognize the constraints he worked under and highlight his successes, and position a move not as a decision based on his performance, but rather as one aspect of the logical transition of the team from rebuilding mode to competitive mode?

The question is did Tremblay get the most out of his team? The answer is a resounding NO! His handling of the bullpen was horrible. His lineup too often had us scratching our heads in bewilderment. Lack of stressing fundamentals was appalling. Not holding anyone accountable not acceptable. It's time for dave to go!!!

Anybody watch Trembley just give his last game-time speech, trying to get a bit of our sympathy?? He's done and he knows it. He said this is his last Wired Wednesday talk. Maybe that just means for the season, but he had a tone, the entire time, that this is it. I bet McPhail's already told him.

Pete...you responded to my earlier post and I wanted to counter your point. Regarding Maddon as a Trembley type in the Angels org...I grant you that, but what you aren't seeing and what is the MAJOR difference is that while an organizational guy for many years, he still ultimately learned under a winning manager and came from a winning organization. Who did Trembley learn under...Mazzili and Perlozzo? He rose through the ranks of a losing organization to become an assistant to two bad, first time managers. Not exactly the same situation as Maddon. I have no problem with Trembley having been given a shot, but can you really say he elevated our team at all? Was he worth five extra wins a season or five extra losses? I'd have to say the latter, but more importantly, as the team moves towards next season, can you honestly say the 2010 O's will fight for him next season? Forget what he's owed or what hand he was dealt...Will Roberts, Markakis, Jones and the others give 100% for him? Will any free agents be even remotely excited to come play for him? You're not wrong about his never really getting a fair shake, but tough. He got to manage in the big leagues and now it's time to retire to West Palm.

I'm a native Baltimoron living in Laguna Niguel, and it kills me to read this stuff. The town deserves so much better than the pathetic product that's passed for a baseball team the last ten years. After watching the Angels day after day ( a first class organization in almost every way), it's obvious that the manager and players are only part of the problem. Whether Trembley stays or goes is irrelevant, and that may be the saddest reality of all.

There's a killer In-and-Out on La Paz down here in South OC, Pete. Check it out!

djph--You've stated it well. Dave T has demonstrated his limitations as a Major League manager. For those of us who have watched every game, it has not be pretty.

Nor has it "been" pretty.

Hey Pete,

Catch an OCC game, and give a report of the finest JC football played in the USA.

Trembley is not responsible for the 100 losses, but his poor leadership and lack of understanding of strategy probably cost the team 10 of the 100 losses. Either way this year's team finishes last in the division. But if personel improves through rookies' maturing and acquisition of useful free agents (no more pitching castoffs with lifetime ERAs over 5, please, Andy), then 10 manager-caused losses is the difference between 1st and 3rd place. Trembley must go. How about hiring a manager with actual ML experience this time--unlike the last three.

Pete, I loved your response to Kevin Cowherd. Manny Acta? Hilarious. He's really great as your straight man, maybe you guys should do the comedy club circuit with that one. I'm sure you'd floor them in D.C,

As for Dave Trembley, I can see it both ways. I don't think he's done enough to either get a strong vote of confidence or the axe. Really a coin flip to my thinking, but I think your argument is a bit stonger unless the Orioles could sign a Tony LaRussa-caliber manager here I'm thinking someone like Ozzie Guillen, Joe Torre or Mike Scioscia).

Bringing another apprentice in doesn't make a lot of sense. It all depends on how Andy MacPhail deals with managers. In Minnesota he fired the inherited Ray Miller and brought in his own man, Tom Kelly, who would manage the Twins to to World Series and outlast MacPhail there.

In Chicago he arrived at the same time the team fired Tom Trebelhorn, so he was able to install his own manager in Jim Riggleman, who lasted five seasons, most tenure of any of the three managers during MacPhail's 12 years with the Cubs (this doesn't count a couple of interim managers in 2001).

Don Baylor had the shortest stay with the Cubs at 2.5 seasons, When he was fired midway through the '01 season, it was less than a year from when he led the team to a winning record.

Explaining his decision to let go of Baylor, MacPhail was quoted as saying: "When the talent on the field does not equal the amount of victories in the standings, that is the criteria (sic) for making a change."

Now, Trembley was not MacPhail's choice as a replacement for Sam Perlozzo; that decision was made by Mike Flanagan, but if the criterion MacPhail uses above is his sole one, then I can't see how Trembley will be fired, unless MacPhail is factoring into the equation how the bench is used, wherther starters get relieved too soon or not soon enough, that sort of thing.

Like I say, this looks to me like it could go either way. I'm not sure Trembley's out of the woods yet, but we'll know shortly.

Peter,

Simply put, you stepped up!

Not only did you properly defend DT, you spoke up for many of us who have a deep understanding as to what's been happening around here for a long time.

I honestly didn't think you would do the right thing, but I was wrong! Not only did you base your opinion from facts, you showed you have enormous class...

Reading the many post from the DT naysayers truly confirms how baltimore baseball fans, by and large, are the least knowledgeable in the country.

I travel the country, and it's striking how, compared to cities like ny and boston, balt fans miss the finer points of the game.

Coming out and defending DT took xxlls Pete. You knew you would get heat, but you did the right thing regardless.

Thanks for stepping up!

This is getting really pathetic Trembley needs to go. Lets Jauss take over the last games at home.

I have a suggestion for the Orioles management. Use the Dick Cheney method and have the fans killed. It will cause them to stop complaining. Its only been 12 years since this team was worth watching! How dare they be offended. Instead of hiring a MLB manager and MLB players just kill the fans and keep the AAA team in Baltimore. Some freako suncultre finds these games entertaining for its dark comedic value.. The games remind me of Chuck Palahniuk books.

Hey Pete it was fun to see you bully an old man in person like you do people on your blog. I was scared that dude was going to have a heart attack. You baited him like they did TO the other day hahah. Oh well I guess when you pick a bad position you have to be a bully and say words like "aint" to make the cows follow.

Well its good to see that Bergy cant run yet. He seems to be coming along nicely....

Hey Wayne,

You stepped up as well!

I may not agree with you about baltimore fans, but I get your point. So many of these post are absolutely formed from ignorance.

I for one didn't believe Pete would step up either, but like you, I applaud his doing the right thing.

Slugger, You are correct the ones you mentioned have talent. but it is not enough. They are short on pitching, starters and relievers. They are starting Waters tomorrow, does that tell the tail? They are short on talent and that is the bottom line. Trembley sent Wigginton to the plate as a pinch hitter tonight, hit a two run blast, who gets credit Trembley or Wigginton? The pitchers they brought up, most were not ready, in fact you can argue that Matusz was the only one close to being ready. This has been a disappointing season but what was it like 7 or 8 games worse than everyone thought. Well Jones, Koji, Pie and Reimold being hurt, Pitchers being shut down. Trading Sherrill hurt and believe it or not Huff being traded did not help either. If all stayed healthy and a little more offensive performance out of Wigginton, Huff and Mora, there would be no discussion. I really do not care if Trembley comes back, I prefer to see him get another chance, but I do not know. Do you think that Wedge would have kept his job if the GM did not strip the Indians? Same thing fire the manager because the GM cannot keep winning without talent. Wedge was ripped off and he was a manager of the year two years ago. He cost too much money for the Indians to keep, so the Indians cut loose with five games to go, Shapiro was classes on that one. At least MacPhail is not interfering until after the season.

Wayne -

You choose NY and Boston fans to 'pick out the finer points of the game'. The two franchises who have the biggest payrolls and are a combined 69 games over .500. Wow, those fans are as intelligent as their teams are good. Funny how that works.....

Many knowledgable O's fans feel Trembley should be gone. Pete said in his article Trembley should not be measured by how many wins the club has, but by how he has developed the players and helped build the foundation.

I agree with Pete. So did he accomplish some of that developing and foundation building? Since Huff and Sherill were traded, the club has taken steps back NOT because of those two players, but because the development stopped. Earlier in the year, yes, Bergeson, Jones, Reimold, Wieters were developing. But not lately, and the excuse has been that his hands were tied because of trades, lack of talent, and tiring arms.

Put all of that aside and let's evaluate his decisions, his leadership, his motivational skills. If you see it, tell me where it is please because I don't see what he's added to help solve the problems. I've seen questionable decisions regarding lineups, use of relievers, baserunning, use of sacrifice bunts, choice of players at first and third, and excessive use of backup catcher.

Simply put, did Trembley accomplish certain personal, team, or organizational goals that made this group better, and what value has he added to better prepare this team for 2010? Maybe we should ask a NY fan for the answer.

Now that the Pittsburgh Pirates have passed us in the standings and we are line for the #2 pick I say we spend 3 million dollars on extra scouting instead of signing 2010's version of Ty Wigginton.

Dave Jauss next Orioles manager

I love the Orioles.

Ahhhh In-And-Out. A double-double and a strawberry shake got me through college. Much better than dorm cafe food. I miss LA.

I think Trembles is coming back. Who on earth would take this job after watching the way these bums are closing out the season?

Brace yourselves. Trembles shall return.

The Orioles need to stay within if they change managers, and there is one that wants to manage that once was a part of a great organization. Since there is no way you can pin this season on Trembley all you can do is go back and look at how he has handled the young arms, young call ups and keeping them focused on the game with constant shift of personnel. Since there were so many losses this season, fans only remember the bad that happens and that is normal. But there was a lot of good that happened, just not enough.

Hey Pete,

I have to admit I was angry and perhaps shouldn't have questioned people's integrity, but rather motives. And apologies for that. I think you have been fairly critical and supportive at different times, although less critical and more supportive that I would have liked you to be, but you are your own person with your own opinions and I respect that.

The thing that I have been frustrated with this season is that the Baltimore media has not reflected how the majority of fans feel, but rather have tried to be upbeat even when it does not stand to reason.

It didn't help, that I read the Sun articles on Trembley after I listened to Viviano and Yaffee mouth off on their daily radio show supporting Trembley. It seems to me like an orchestrated drumbeat that only Andy MacPhail has the ability to put in place.

Nevertheless, I probably let my emotions get the best of me. I have to realize that Baltimore Sun writers and 1057thefan and others are not O's fans. They grew up watching and supporting, and probably still support other teams, so they don't look at the O's or Ravens like we (fans) do.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I certainly did grow up rooting for other teams, though I always loved Brooks. I don't know if that has an effect on my opinion in this situation, but I have been around long enough to know the passion of the true Orioles fans. I know they are frustrated, but you also have to understand that the newspaper and Web site (and the radio stations) have a different role than the message boards and blogs, which give fans an opportunity to voice their passion and frustration. I've pointed out many times that the reason I don't pander to the most frustrated fans by writing every column ripping Peter Angelos and the team is because I've already done that many times over the years, and you can only go back to that well so many times before it loses any real meaning..

I bet Peter is at In and Out Burger #1

Pete,
My condolences on your loss...

As for the idiots who are ripping you, that's exactly what they are and they need to be ignored.

So, what's your favorite In-N-Out menu item? Or do you go off-menu? There's an In-N-Out opening soon thats a 10 minute drive from my campus and I can't wait! And I don't buy fast food burgers very often.

He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
