Adam's out

Adam Jones has been removed from the game after a freak play at first place that may have left him with either a sprained left ankle or a hyper-extended left knee -- or both. He turned the wrong way after reaching first on an overthrow and then jammed his leg hustling back to the bag.

Jones went down hard and looked like he was in serious pain, but eventually got up and tried to stay in the game. Though he seemed to be walking all right, when the Yankees decided to go to their bullpen, O's manager Dave Trembley sent newly promoted Jeff Fiorentino in as a pinch runner.

Pie chart: Felix Pie has six home runs in his last 49 at-bats, dating back to Aug. 14. That means he has hit more home runs in his last 17 games (six) than he hit in his 395 previous major league at bats (five).

fire trembley

Another winnable game, horribly mismanaged, bungled by supposedly good pitchers. They get so excited about five scoreless appearances, but when it counts......KABOOM! This team and its manager..........they do not know how to win! Bring in someone who will teach them how.

Fire Pie!

I predict he will have a baserunning blunder with a little help from Samuel. Samuel will talk to the press later re-iterating why Pie still does not belong in the Bigs, whereas Trembley will take a more cooler approach by referring to the player as "Felix being Felix".

Peter-
I am just right back to nothing really matters.
We just will never win. We keep sending guys like Ray out there, and Sarfate, and ALbers, and so on and on, and they just are not any good.
Every year, the Yankees just beat the hell out of us. That says something about our whole franchise.
We have to just release everyone in this bullpen and start over.
Again though, until there is a salary cap in baseball, it doesn't matter. The yanks will at least buy the playoffs, and then some will continue to spout how it is fair.
Angelos has to be like 80 right?

Gutless wonders....can't throw a strike. Bring in someone who will show them how? I am tired of the same old losing. We are a laughingstock. Fire Trembley!

Someone said Chris Ray was back...

Yeah, it's a long drive, deep center field, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back!

Charles

LOL!

Pete,

No way is this team winning 14 more games this year. If the Orioles win more than 65 games this season, I'll buy you a case of your favorite beer.

Charles

I agree. Especially with guys like Rhadames Liz coming back up to replace the youngsters being shutdown.

Something is telling me that this rebuilding plan is NOT on schedule ;)

Unless management is willing to spend money in the free-agent market this offseason, things are not going to improve.

pete,

it sounds like cardinals pitching coach dave duncan is unhappy in st. louis. his contract is up after this season, so is there any chance the orioles go after him if he leaves? i think he'd be great for the young pitchers.

The Yankees lineup doesn't seem to be quite as intimadating as years past at first glance. When you look at the numbers though, it's interesting.

They have 6 guys who can reach 30+homers and 90+rbis this year.(Damon, Teixera, A-Roid, Swisher, Matsui, and Cano) And a total of 8 who will get 20+hr and 80+rbi. (Jeter, Posada)

Where as the Orioles have zero in the first category, and maybe 3 in the second. (Markakis, Jones, Scott)

Pretty big disparity. On the positive side though, if Riemold, Wieters and possible Pie live up to expectations then you've got 6 next year. Add a couple through free (DH, first or third) and you're right there. A little optimistic, but not out of the question.

I know what you're gonna say, but it really is me and not Pete posting under my name!

Dave in buffalo

that question has been posted on here many times and ignored by all...

Screech returns!

Peter-
What did you say about Ray being back in form?

Why is Sarfate even on this club right now?
He couldn't throw a strike when he was getting innings, why the heck is he playing now when he's done virtually nothing over the past 3 months. Give another kid a chance!
Chris Ray? Chris Ray? He couldn't hold a paper bag how can you really expect him to hold a lead?
The bullpen of the O's is beyond bush league...it's actually nausiating to watch.
Even in a perfect world if we could sign Figgens to play 3rd. & got Adam Dunn in the middle of the lineup...how can we ever expect to move to the next level with such minimal talent in the pen? The Baltimore Oriole bullpen really are the not ready for Prime Time players! Actually, more like the Bad News Bears. How lousy it must feel leaving the game as a starter & handing the ball off to Ray, Sarfate or Albers.
I actually right now feel sorry for Trembley...he has to sit there & watch this crap inning after inning , night after night. At least we can leave & mow the lawn & check back in later & miss half the garbage that happens on a supposed Major League team but, trembley has to be there & find excuses for these misfits...God bless him, in another week he'll be sitting in his spot laced in a straight jacket sucking his thumb...this team is that good!

I was listening to Tom "The Tool" Davis during the O's pregame show on 105.7 making excuses for his boss Angelos. He shamelessly pulled some stats where the O's were something like 3-30 against Yankees, Redsox and Angels but we are only 2 games under 500 against the rest of the MLB teams we have faced this year.

The moral of the story as per Tommy boy: We can't compete with those who have more money to spend.

And Dave "The Yes Man" Johnson was shamelessly agreeing with him, but at the same time saying that they are not making excuses.

Just when I thought the O's ministry of propaganda could not out-do itself. Never fails to amaze me.

Just realized my plan wouldn't work as you have too many OF/DH types and not enough places for all of them. You're always going to miss that kind of productiion from SS and 2B. Though he might not hit 20+ Roberts adds a lot more though. More than a guy like Swisher and his 30 homers.

Okay, new plan. Get Hanley Ramirez here and Adrian Gonzalez and presto, look out Yanks!!!

A crap, I forgot about pitching.....

Look, Some of you have to stop saying 'fire trembley'. It truly makes you look like morons. The guy has zero chance of winning with the team he must field.

And yes..... LeeMac is on schedule. He took 11 years to turn the Cubs into anything. That puts the O's at about the year 2020 or so. That should keep most of you happy talkers excited through the next decade of losing.

And HERE WE GO.... The O's postgame where MASN tells us all the good things the O's did. Like clockwork!

Another L people... Another L!

Dave in Buffalo and John,

You really mean you haven't noticed that one of the few very bright spots this season has been our young pitching (Bergesen, Hernandez Matusz etc)

I hardly think Kranitz is the problem.

What in the world would Dave Duncan do?

Unless you want him to make out lineups and do pitching changes etc.
We definitely need some help in that dept.

Yes, the bullpen is bad but we traded one of our best relief pitchers(Sherill)-a sacrifcial lamb for the sake of our rebuild, we gave away Chad Bradford last year for presumably 20 thou and a bag of balls and we have been playing Russian Roulette with most of the arms down there.
The only semi-dependable arms have been Johnson and for the most part(surprisingly-Hendrickson). Baez has been decent but showing signs lately of declining, Ray teased us for awhile but looks terrible. The struggles of Safrate, Bass and Albers are all well-documented so what we have is chaos.
In all fairness, getting only 5 IP from the starters exposes the 'fraility' of the 'pen and experienced teams like the Yanks are licking their chops and running up to the plate once the bullpen door opens.
It's too bad because we should be able to win most times when you score 6 runs but I've lost count lately with the number of losses in those type of games.
All in all, another brutal loss and a rude, cold awakening about how far we have to go to even sniff competitiveness as there are too many weak spots on this team that likely can't easily be fixed. With the 'pen in particular, it seems like it's addition by subtraction in that we can hope to get better by shedding Bass, Albers, Safrate over the winter. Then again there's no guarentee the replacements are going to be much better. Is the current crew any better than guys like Cherry, Liz, Zambrano and Walker?
Oh well, MacPhail has a 'plan'...

bill frederick

You do have a point. We have far worse problems to address......

WAAAAAH! I am so sick and tired of all the griping and whining.

This is a losing year for the O's. This month they're going to lose a lot- they have the toughest remaining schedule in the AL and they've shut down two of their most promising picture. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, or cause for daily bitching with the same tired refrains and scapegoats.

Angelos, Trembley, "McFail"... You hate Pie until he's hitting, you rag on B-Rob when he's hurting and having a slow month but then love him again as soon as his bat warms up. It's hard to keep up with who everyone thinks is a prospect "bust" or a veteran who should be cut, because the posters here seem more fickle than a high school girl- the next week we all love them.

Show some loyalty to your team. Show some patience and perspective about recognizing the foundation that's being laid for future success. Show some humility about the fact that you don't know everything about everything. And please, show some mercy to other fans who are sick and tired about seeing the same stupid bitching posts from the same people every day. At least come up with something interesting or original to say.

Okay, now you can go back to your effing stupid "fire trembley, run angelos out of town, I hate/love/hate/love [insert Orioles player here] posts"...

It gets really old to

Terry P

The "plan" that you deride is primarily about starting pitching...so the question should be "Is the current crew" of Matusz, Bergesen, Tillman Hernandez, Arieta, Patton and on and on any better than Cabrera Ponson Liz etc....?
The answer to that is pending but looks like according to what we've seen and everyone that knows baseball is saying it's WAYYYYYY better.....

or you can just go on and bash Macphail.

Andrew,

Most of these people "bitching" are true Orioles fans who are fed up with the losses, the excuses, and the propaganda.

Loyalty? Patience? How dare you question Orioles fans who have endured over a decade of misery.

But you know it all guy.

Laying the foundation for "future success" in a division with New York and Boston?

Andrew, kid, you're making me laugh...

Oh wait on that thought.

Masn's own Amber Theoharis relaying the news items down from Angelos ministry of propaganda just pointed out that the O's had the same number of hits as the Yankees tonight. Add that to the moral victories column.

Jim "The Glass Half Full" Hunter is pointing out that Michael Flacco is the Appalachian League player of the week.

Things are looking up!

Now back to my thought:

Just to put into perspective for all those upset about the loss tonight or the night before. We saw the best team in baseball put a beat-down on the worst team in baseball. Why are you upset? Were you expecting a different outcome? Did you bet money on the O's? I didn't think so. Cheer up. The Ravens start playing for real in a week.

bill frederick,

ya ur right. plus, last time we got a big name pitching coach (leo mazzone), he didn't do much

Andrew is probably a happy Yankee fan

Charles,
If you don't believe the Orioles can field a contender in a division with New York and Boston, why are you wasting your time with it all? A lot of baseball people smarter than you or me have been mighty impressed with what MacPhail has done in just two years, and the direction of the Orioles organization. Sorry if I don't take the word of any moron with a computer who confidently declares otherwise.

And I will question the loyalty and patience of people who turn on young prospects and long-standing veterans at the drop of a hat. A few months ago everyone here said MacPhail was an idiot for bringing in Pie and Trembley was an idiot for playing him. Now everyone is writing to complain that he isn't in the lineup every night, and they don't even realize that the only idiots in this entire equation are them!

Roberts has been a dependable, hardworking and productive Oriole for years, giving his all to this team and its fans. Then this season he endures a slump, possibly because of illness, and everybody is writing every night about his lack of heart and subpar effort, and ripping him after every single game.

Do me a favor and print out these postings and keep them somewhere in your desk, and I will do the same. If this team doesn't grow into a contender I will look at these postings and admit that I was wrong, and if it does you should do the same. Don't act like you were onboard all along.

Charles, Don't bother printing the post.

For years, guys like Andrew have been suggesting such, but when they're wrong (and when it comes to the O's, they're often wrong), they never follow through.

Instead, they jump on the happy ship again the following year, forgetting their promise.

The one thing you have going for you though Andrew? You'll eventually be right! One year (even if it's another 12 years), you'll get it right. When you do, you'll say 'I told you so'....and guess what?

I'll give you your due...you will have earned it!

No, I do not think McFail's plan will work here without free agency.

After two years I see no progress. The faces have changed, the names have changed, even the jerseys have changed, but I still see the same problems that have plagued this team for a decade.

  • Poor starting pitching
  • Disregard for fundamentals
  • Inexplicable base running blunders
  • Poor coaching
  • Relief pitchers throwing batting practice fastballs
  • Meltdowns after the 6th inning
  • Excuses
  • More excuses

Charles,

You don't get it....... This is an 11 year plan dude. See the Cubs!

We have 9 more to go.

Come on man, losing is cool! I mean if the Pirates win in the next couple years, the O's can go for their record of losing seasons.

Glass half full man....... half full!

Good news everyone.. The O's loss tonight will be re-broadcast in HD in a few hours.

half full everyone!

Andrew,

You do realize that many fans have had these positive thoughts you have for over a decade and are getting fed up? Do you want to believe in someone or an organization in this case who has broken promises for 12 years? You'd like to, but at this point you'd like to see some real results before you buy in. Talk is cheap. This is not about who is right and who is wrong. You can't question fans loyalty because they don't see it the way you do. The fact that we're all here is because we care in our own way. Being a true fan sometimes means taking the unpopular approach. Stop acting like some kind of "Patriot" holding the "support the O's" banner as everyone else is either with you or against you.

Charles,
according to your post we actually look to be in pretty decent shape

1 and 5 is probably just a matter of more seasoning for our young arms and some key adds in free agency.

The rest should be resolved with the coaching shakeup we all are anticipating at the end of the year.

That was one of the more optimistic posts I've see all year. I'm proud of you

Slugger, you're right about the credibility and goodwill this team has lost with fans over the last 12 years. I'm with you, I've been through it too.

And I recognize that people have different opinions on where the organization stands now. Some see the pieces starting to fall in place, while others see the holes that remain, and the continued gap between us and the real contenders. As you said, it's not about right or wrong, and I think there could be some great debate and discussion on this.

What grates me is the lowest common denominator level of discussion that persists here, which isn't particularly insightful or interesting. Everyone knows Trembley is gone but people sign on and say the same things about him night after night after night. Everyone knows Angelos has made mistakes, but to hear people here you would think every dropped fly ball was his fault. I'm not waving a patriot, "with me or against me" flag, I just think B-Rob deserves better than to be thrown under a bus by half the people on here the moment he goes through a slump because of a respiratory infection. I think the younger players deserve better than to be treated as "busts" if they aren't cy young or Johnny bench the moment they arrive. I think it reflects poorly on O's fans that the overwhelming popular opinion of any player on this blog seems entirely determined by his last 50 at bats. And I really dislike when the fringe complainers bash Schmuck and the people who are doing their jobs in trying to inform an entertain all of us, and doing it well at that. We are better than all of this.

I am just tired of signing on every night and seeing the same posters launching the same tired tirades against trembley, angelos, and whatever players haven't batted .300 that week (while they suddenly love whoever they previously bashed who is now on a hitting streak).

Some optimism would be nice too, there is much cause for hope in the midst of this losing season, and it would be nice if people could see that sometimes. (I think the only time the term "glass half full" has been used here has been sarcastically. I don't even think the poster realized the irony, either, that he was trying to be so contrarian but just ended up with the same old spiel)

Andrew,

Have some fun with it baby! Cheer up! You're taking this whole thing too personally. We all love the O's in our own sick ways. You can't please all the people all the time. Let people blow out some smoke when they feel like it. It would be a pretty boring blog if we all kept dancing to the same drumbeat. Winning cures all bad thoughts. People pay for their mistakes. The attitude of fans is a direct result of the franchise's product.

Here is a tip for you. Pick a guy that you disagree with the most and engage him in arguments every time he writes something. People do it to me all the time :-).

Good to have you here.

People chill out! Mcphail has only been here a couple of seasons. Rebuilding a MLB team from the farm takes time. In 2011 if Mcphail's plan is not working then we could be talking about pulling the plug on it. If we pull it too soon it will set us back years to get back to where we are now. This season was never gonna be anything anyway, so let it be. let the young pitchers play (badly if needed) so maybe they have something to think about during the off-season. I am pretty sure trembley is done so we will see if the manager is the difference for this team.

Anonymous. I get that the 'plan' is based on starting pitching but unless we somehow assemble a bullpen, the O's aren't going to win too many games. The trend is to baby the young ptichers and I can see the logic in that . Hopefully, these guys can go deeper into games, they all stay healthy and we have the makings of a decent rotation.
Not too many starters go past the 7th inning and in fact, a 'quality start' is defined by 6 IP and 3 runs or less. That still leaves 3 innings to fill and right now, we are lacking in that area.
Case in point, the Yanks bullpen shut us down last night after Burnett left; we coughed up yet another lead.
McPhail has to shore up the 'pen, add some corner bats or his rebuild is going to end up failing.

I picked a good night to take a needed break and do something different.

After looking at 300 post, some of it relevant, some of it venting and some just wanting to see a better product on the field is all fine. But this "fire somebody" stuff is childish, really gets old. Fact is the Orioles have management from AM down that are there for a purpose, to get through this season (that they were picked for last) and find out what they have, and what they need. It was never a year that anyone should judge by wins or losses. Everyone gets down on guys especially Trembley and McPhail for trying to build, not buy a winner for Baltimore.

Unless I am wrong, I do not think that any of you know how difficult of an undertaking it is to build from the bottom. You can look at the Yankees, and say they what you want to say about them and buying players with ridiculous amounts of money, but they will be faced with problems over the next few years, some of the true home grown playes and some they brought in by free agency are getting older. Rivera, Pettitte, Jeter, Posada, Damon and Matsui come to mind, even though Jeter never seems to slow. Who knows how long A-Rod will be as productive with his injuries, hard to believe he has 16 years now in the big leagues. But the fact is the Orioles have something going for them right now that the Yankees do not, they do not have to win in 2009, the Yankees do. So if the Orioles make a few moves in the off season to make the team get to .500 or better baseball for 2010, that is great, the fact is we have only one player that is on the wrong side of 35, the Yanks have many. If you want to be miserable during this time of rebuilding that is fine but personal attacks and "fire somebody" is not a good path to take. Also respect players like Roberts and Markakis for what they do in the community and when a professional writer brings it to your attention, give credit where credit is due. You can disagree with moves that the GM or manager makes, that is great stuff. You can suggest trades for players that you would like to see in the orange and black next year, that is great stuff. One last thing, I get a little tired of people getting down on Angelos, he has made some mistakes, but being cheap does not describe him. Sometimes he got unlucky with players that he spent a lot of money on like Belle and Ponson. But it is not his fault that Belle got hurt so bad he had to retire early. Also when he likes a player he stands behind him. Remember how many trades he vetoed, like most recent the Roberts deal? He has turned the team over to McPhail to build and Trembley to manage, both really tough jobs. But imagine the pain that Girardi and Cashman will have if the Yankees do not make it to the world series, check the New York blogs then, it will be awful, we do not want to turn into that kind of town, grow the talented young pitchers get a good run producer that is under 30, and see what can happen in the future. Some of it makes perfect sense some of it does not, like the Sherrill deal still gets me, but he finally gave up and earned run.

While I do agree that it is fun to engage in some spirited debate with specific posters, I didn't see any comments on Juan Samuel not being in the game last night. I believe Shelby was at 3rd, but I didn't recognize the newbie at first. I could have missed it, but I thought for sure someone would have mentioned it on here.

Oh and I forgot yesterday, how about Joe Girardi on Monday night? I mean Trembley benched Pie, but Girardi benched A-Rod. Trembley gets ripped, Girardi gets a free pass though I guess. Pie did pretty well with the day off though huh? In all fairness to the A-Rod benching, I think Girardi felt bad that he was sending Petite out there to smoke us.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: To be honest, it'll be another week or two before I can go to the games again and ask those questions. Hate to admit, I didn't notice.

Don't worry you bob lancione haters i am here. 0 and 2 pete and James C on my $100.00 donation to the SPCA. 30!/2 games out 9 and 30 against the yankee's, boston , and california. They will finish with more then 100 loses, they will be 40 1/2 games back by the end of the year, and we are going to start our plan next year and all will be well. The yankee's will have 8 players in there lineup with over 20 home runs in it and you day dreamers think we can compete in this division. Tampa bay is 11 game sover 500 and they are 12 1/2 games back. And on a closing note Chris Ray found his arm slot last week but on his way to the ball park he lost it again. All i ask of you fans that bash me everyday make sure you remember who you are so this time next year we can have this same conversation again. You won't have to worry about 2011 because andy won't be here to talk about his plan anymore , but you all will have a chance to say that he left this organization better then when he got here.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't care whether you end up being right or wrong. I think it could go either way. What is sad, however, is how joyous you are that they are failing, and that you are rooting so hard for them to lose, just so you can say you were right. That says way more about you than it does about them.

Hey James,

Nice comment on Girardi and Trembley, especially when no one has stated that Pie is a regular every day player on this team (until the latest injury to Jones) and A-Rod is on the Yanks. Maybe A-Rod had some stomach pains thinking about eating some seafood in Baltimore. But I guess if you are going to give A-Rod a day off it makes sense that Girardi does it in Baltimore away, rather than at home against better teams..

I did not go to the Orioles game last night or watch on TV, I also did not Tivo it, so I have no idea what happened with Samuel.

cbcoach-
"One last thing, I get a little tired of people getting down on Angelos, he has made some mistakes, but being cheap does not describe him."

Check the payroll decline over the past decade. About in-line with the attendance decline that he inflicted.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: What a simple-minded analysis. This team had one of the biggest payrolls in baseball in 1998 and 1999 and went into deep decline anyway. The size of the payroll will be relevant in a year or so, but not now when they're transitioning away from a lot of expensive, non-productive players.

djph -

Seeing Johnny Damon's name in your comment about Yankees heading for 30+ homers made me wonder...

Johnny Damon:
2007-08: 29 homers
2009: 24 homers (Home: 17, Away: 7)

Derek Jeter:
2007-08: 23 homers
2009: 17 homers (Home: 12, Away: 5)

Think the New Yankee Stadium has anything to do with these two 35-year-old rediscovering some power?

Trembley has to go

No pete that is where you are wrong. I really don't want them to lose, it's just about time people wake up and realize that while it's a plan in place it can't work without obtaining top level free agents and they won't ever be able to get to that level.

Bob,

It must have been your delivery. Not that it matters but who are you referring to when you say "t's just about time people wake up and realize that while it's a plan in place it can't work without obtaining top level free agents and they won't ever be able to get to that level". Not everyone hates you by the way, that is your assessment, and as momma used to say "hate is a strong word". I agree they have to go after some free agents in 2010. In 2009 they did not have to go after free agents, why? Because they were cheap? or they had a lot of holes and it would have cost them close to 100,000,000 in payroll to obtain the talent they would have needed to make this club compete for the wild card. The Orioles found out some things this year and they are closer, and really have nothing to trade to bring a big name star in to Baltimore. The starting pitching is being groomed, and they have a lot of filled some holes that they had last year. Do you remember Payton and Patterson? How about our six shortstops from last year? How about our catcher Hernandez? Cabrera? Penn? Ponson? Loewen (unfortunate)? Benson? I do agree with you bring in a few guys that will help make them more competitive, I guess we will find out.

Bob,

I definitely agree with you actually about the FA's too. I'm just not sold on anyone in 2010 really being "top flight" in the categories we need and we can only swing so many trades with some young talent to where we're right back at ground zero circa 1998.

Plus, the FA market has been crazy in the past. Some of these guys get INSANE money because a team is desperate. Alex Rios was signed for $63 million and he'd be our 5th outfielder right now basically. So even though it meant taking a Bobby Eaton this year, I'd rather pay him $2 million than a Carl Pavano type $15 million just because ESPN says the Yankees might be interested in him.

It's a fine line on how you want to take the risk I guess.

Pete to be perfectly honest just a very little bit of me wants to see this team lose, and it's not for the reason you think. I am not going to defend myself over my feelings except to say that i firmly believe that Dave t is not the type of manager that this team needs and if they finished strong it might give Andy the wrong impression and he might keep him on. But after reading your reply to me you have taken this to a different level by saying that it says more about me then it does about them. Pete regardless of how a person feels about the orioles or any other subject for that matter you shouldn't ever attack my character or anybodies in any way shape or form. I think you crossed the line just a little.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Sorry if I offended you, but you threw down the gauntlet about the team losing 14 of those 18 games and you sounded so gleeful that the O's lost the first two to the Yankees. That just didn't sound like somebody who is hoping for the best.

blancione -

Teams can compete and succeed without signing high-priced free agents.

Look at the A's from 2000 to 2006. They gave up about 30 top free agents and signed zero, yet they were very competitive and made the playoffs in five of those seven years.

Look at Tampa. Who was their big free agent in '08? Cliff Floyd? What about this year? They signed Pat Burrell, but he hasn't done much.

Look at the Angels in 2002. I don't think they spent much on Kevin Appier and Scott Spezio.

Look at the Cardinals, Tigers, Twins, Rangers (post A-Rod), Marlins, Rockies and Giants. None of those teams have spent big bucks on big free agents and they all have been or are set to be perennial contenders.

You know why? Two words: Young. Pitching. And how do you get young pitching? Do you buy it? Nope. You build it.

Very true in all other divisons in baseball. Why is everybody so stubborn in not realizing we are severly handicapped by who we play against and by what it takes to win in this divison. Once again for anybody that might have forgotten we play in the best divison in ALL of sports and the only way to win is to supplentment your home grown talent with top free agents something that we can't do.Wake up guys this isn't that hard to understand.

So did Tampa defect from the AL East while I wasn't looking?

And look at the 2007 Blue Jays before Shaun Marcum and Dustin McGowen went down with injuries.

I'm so sick of people whining that it's impossible to win in this division without spending tons of money. Especially after the Rays did it last season. Obviously, it's impossible to win in this division when you have a string of inept GM's spending money on past-their-prime chumps. But when you have a good baseball man making good baseball decisions and you're bringing up solid young talent every year, you can win in the AL East without spending a billion dollars.

~~you shouldn't ever attack my character~~

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
