What could have been

Hate to play shoulda-coulda, but it's hard not to look back on the past week and a half and think that the Orioles could be on a pretty nice roll right now if they hadn't squandered that 6-3 lead in Minnesota in Tuesday and blown a lead in the ninth inning in the series opener against the Indians.

If the O's had won those two games, they would be in the midst of a 7-2 run with a chance to build some more momentum for their upcoming two-week run against the Yankees, Rangers and Red Sox. Instead, the O's are 5-4 over their last nine games and suffered those four losses by a total of six runs.

And, if we had scored more runs and given up less.... we would been on a 9-0 run!! :)

Regardless, still enjoying watching em play ...unlike last year....

It's getting easier to see where this rebuilding project could really be coming together. I'm not sure i'd trade the O's outfield for any other in MLB. And i think I'd look to hold onto all four guys.I realize it would sound ridiculous to call Felix Pie "untouchable" but between the four of them there is tremendous talent and versatility and they all have somewhat different strengths that could really meld together nicely. And Wieters is starting to look very studly and throwing people out. The bullpen has strong arms. Get the young starters progressing. The trick will be to add the big stick and a #1 or #2 starter w/out coughing up too much. As a 40year fan it's tough and probably at least 2011 for serious contention but with little exception the young and new players this year have been as advertised or better.

We have to solve 1st and 3rd, learn to run the bases and I think we compete next year right out of the shute!

What could've been?
1.) O's draft Chase Utley over Beau Hale in 2001 draft.

2.) O's draft Fielder over Loewin in 2002 draft.

3.) O's trade Brian Roberts to St. Louis for Dan Haren.

4.) O's draft Jered Weaver over Wade Townsend in 2004

5.) O's draft Tim Lincecum over Billy Rowell in 2006

O's consistently compete for WS title as a result of said moves.

That's what 'could've been'......

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I suspect we could do the same thing with a lot of teams and their draft choices. It's a pretty imperfect science. Nine teams passed up Lincecum. Eleven teams passed up Jared Weaver. And 14 teams passed up Chase Utley. Not just the O's.

...and if I was 7 feet tall, I could have been one heck of a basketball player.

If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas.

Hey, IF the Red Sox had sold Ruth to the Dodgers the Yankees would have moved to the West Coast with the Giants and we wouldn't have to play against them every year!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
