Today's nit pick: Aubrey's at-bat

Okay, this is the second time in the last couple weeks that I've nit-picked an individual at-bat, which I'm normally loath to do. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Nick Markakis just walk and didn't Aubrey Huff get ahead 3-0 on the count against a tiring Rick Porcello with a chance to load the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning?

So, could we at least expect the veteran hitter to lay off the low strike until the count is full and make the rookie throw him a hittable pitch? Of course not. He tried to dig out that 3-1 sinker and hit into the easy 4-6-3.

I can't remember a team that is so automatic in the situations where a double play just knocks the wind out of you.

b,

Good point about the previous Oriole busts. What I am trying to get at is, we have been singing the same old song the past 4-6 years. It seems we have "been so close" and we just had to "wait for the kids to come!" Remember when Hargrove was managing and we were "on the brink" when guys like Hairston, Kingsale, Ponson were the new wave of the future? I mean seriously this group we have right here has more potential and hopefully next year they all make the same jump Adam Jones made this year. I look at Hernandez and see Cabrera. I look at Berken, Waters, Liz, Pauley, and see Heathcliff Slocumb in an O's uniform all over again. If we do not go out and sign MAJOR LEAGUE READY AND PROVEN players, then I just can not see this team kicking butt ever. I just do not see us going from cellar to stellar like the Rays did. . .let's hope MacP-diddy proves us wrong though. I am just agitated we stink worse than the new Family Guy episodes

This is just absolutly unacceptable. Huff needs to go. He will not take a walk for some reason, and he has killed so many rallies. I said in the previous post that the O's still have a lot of work to do before contending. A new, better hitting coach and manager should defiently get things started.

The Orioles remind me of the New York Knights in the movie "The Natural" before Roy Hobbs gets a chance to play. I swear if the camera stayed on Trembley all game you would see him mouth the words, "I should have been a farmer."

Milwaukee -

FIrst off, I'm not sure why you see D-Cab in David Hernandez. Check out their minor league stats:

Hernandez: 529 innings, 3.88 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 2.63 K/BB, 10.4 K/9, 3.8 BB/9

Cabrera: 288 innings, 3.97 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 1.88 K/BB, 9.4 K/9, 5.2 BB/9

I know. The ERAs and WHIPs are almost exactly the same. But look at those last three numbers. Hernandez's K/BB is almost a full point better. He strikes out one more guy per nine and walks more than one guy fewer. That's the biggest difference. Cabrera never had good command. After only 8 bight league starts, Hernandez is already much more polished than Cabrera ever will be.

Oh, and check out Hernandez's strikeout and walk numbers in AAA this season: 4.39 K/BB, 12.4 K/9, 2.8 BB/9

Moving on to the Heathcliff Slocumb comparison... I completely agree with you there. But I couldn't care less. Berken, Waters and Pauley have never been projected as solid major league starters. They're just spot starters and AAA roster fillers. Liz has been a bit of a disappointment because he's been unable to harness his talent and build upon his success in the low minors. If you're looking for a Cabrera comparison, Liz is your man. Check out his minor league numbers. He was freakishly good in Rookie and A-ball, but the K numbers dropped dramatically after his first stint in A-ball. There's your Cabrera.

As far as signing proven major leaguers, that's not going to happen until this team shows it's talent and promise. I don't expect Andy Mac to sign any big names this coming offseason. But if the core remains in tact, the young pitchers improve and we get a solid third baseman, I can see this group breaking the .500 mark and making Baltimore a much more desirable place for an impact corner infield bat in the winter of 2010-11.

Hi Pete,

Well normally I would have been upset with Huff's AB too, and the fact that he and Brian Roberts have already packed it in for 2009.

But you put everything in perspective for me earlier today, and I am no longer stressing over these little things, and even if we lose all of the remaining games, I will be focused like a laser beam on how the young kids are doing.

I'm sure that Jim Hunter and Rick Dempsey will give me a further lift when they convince me that the Orioles actually won today while losing.

Nope, I no longer have any expectations for this team, other than hoping that no one is killed by a foul ball while sleeping on the bench. I am one happy Dude.

In fact,Hernandez actually pitched well today, the umpire squeezed him and the Detroit hitters were so fooled by his explosive stuff they couldn't get the bat off of their shoulders.

I can't wait for the next game, I am pumped!

Pete-- that's not a "nit pick". That's a valid point.

Now we lose with Berken tomorrow LOL!

What about Huff pulling up when running on an eventual double play? Great example to the youngsters you lazy jerk!

@O's fan in Milwaukee...

I have to agree.... the most recent season of Family Guy was a major disappointment. That's why I find it a joke that NOW they finally get nominated for an Emmy when they really arent deserving.

Oh yeah, and the O's suck too...

Pete-- That was not a "nit pick" That's a valid point.

why do I hit post one time and have my comments come up 7 times?

It's called plate discipline. O's don't have it, and haven't for years.

How many first and second, none out chances have we seen turn into nothing, just since the break? Trying to pull outside pitches leads to DPs, or swinging at balls results in strikeouts or weak popups.

What did w hit w/ RISP today? I lost count.

b,

I definitely hope you are right about Hernandez and his more polished resume coming into the big leagues translating into more success than D-Cab, if that is what you are implying. I hope Hernandez proves me wrong and absolutely destroys this league next year, because I WANT him in the rotation next year succeeding. All this losing has got the best of me.

As far as Family guy goes (to the previous blogger), it truly is a shame. At least we have American Dad :-)

What are these double, triple, quadruple posts?

Huff needs to go. NOW.

and Dan - awesome Natural reference.

Pete, a "nit-pick" is when one complains that Robert Andino doesn't bend his knees properly at shortstop.

Your point about Huff is not a nit-pick, it's a 100% valid point.

OCJay -

What's even more amazing the wording was even changed in that one push of the button :)

Pete-- that's not a "nit pick". That's a valid point.

now that brandon snyder is starting to tear it up at AAA, why do we even need huff? pete, do u see any way the O's bring him back next year?

I know Mora has been big news lately with his whiny complaining but whats up with DT's man crush on Wigginton? Aside from a slugging advantage (.412 to .313), everything else on offense is nearly identical while I think Mora is better defensively at 3rd.

I say they both suck.

Huff is just another great example of the O's not trading a player at their peak. We didn't trade Tejada, Cabrera, Sherrill, Penn, etc. until they had hit rock bottom. We need to start selling younger players short by taking a risk on them not becoming stars and getting a more proven player in return.

Pete,
I agree with you on all points about that particular at bat. This has been a pattern of many Orioles hitters over the last 6-7 years. It is time for Terry Crowley to go......maybe he can't coach each player pre at -bat, but that needs to be brought up the next day with video proof.....and the coaches job is to demand/encourage a better effort. It's time for the Crow to go.

Pete,

My grandfather taught me two important lessons before he passed away: 1) You get what you pay for, 2) You'll go blind if you keep doing that!

Well at least the first one applies to the Orioles!

I didn't hear the game today (vacation) but I see that Adam Jones didn't play. Why DT why? Is he too hot and we're sfraid we might win? Ridiculous that a young guy needs a day off..Huff needs the day off. Goodbye Dave

Off with all their heads! Folks this team sucks, get over it! They are NOT going to cut every guy everyday they have a bad game. They had a great opportunity to axe Mora and bring in some new blood but what did we do, kiss and make up and let him bitch for the next two month or DT give in and let him play every other day! We need an ass kicker! Most of the vets have seen this before and the tents are packed and their getting ready for their long break. Same song, 11th verse!

hate to say it, but we need a manager who isn't afraid to get in Huff's face about that.

Trem kisses all his players butts because he looks up to them.

I'm sorry but we need a real nasty manager in here soon, or all this talent is gonna be wasted.
