Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

No worries, as long as your lack of activity didn't last longer than 4 hours..........

Schmucker, why do you assume we're not all big phony Cialis ad fans?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Fair point.

Peter
The Cialis ads are just as relevant as some of these kool aid drinkers posts.

I sent away for that Cialis once. All I got was a picture of Anne B.Davis,a rubber glove, and a small tube of Vaseline.......(see Alice)

The Orioles need some Cialis
Posted by: MIKE D | August 19, 2009 12:34 PM
Here is a interesting Point,
What is the one thing the O's really need?
Power.
So we trade away Huff and that new powerhouse Zaun.
Amazing isn't it?

Richard hopefully they are making room for Gonzo or someone with power... I hope..
Posted by: Lenny | August 19, 2009 12:39 PM
O f Course, Previous comment tongue in cheek. Who would expect Zaunie to hit as well as he has. I do miss him. Real Pro player.

For a boring Wednesday, here is a question for everyone. I have been to 6 O's game this season. They have won every game. Has anyone else had a run like this with 5 or more games? That means I have seen more than 10 percent of the team's wins in person and attended only 6 games!!
Posted by: frox | August 19, 2009 12:59 PM
frox - maybe you should have attended all of them. And some games against the Nats in DC as well.
It's all your damn fault the O's are as bad as they are!
Posted by: Bob F. | August 19, 2009 1:01 PM
Frox
I have been to 9 and they won 3
LOL
I saw them beat the nats in DC though
Posted by: John in Manassas | August 19, 2009 1:04 PM
Maybe we should all chip in to get frox tickets to every remaining home game? That would mean 20 more wins and, oh, wait, we'd still suck.
Posted by: john in south bend | August 19, 2009 1:10 PM
I've been to 1 and they lost. I used to go to 20-30 per season.

Get a Grip:
We need to look at the O's without emotion. I know its difficult, but take a step back and lets deal with reality.
If you are an optimist the team has 3 quality players.....Roberts, Jones, and Nick M. After these 3 everything else is a crap shoot. We have a pretty good short stop....no one at the corners.....maybe we have a catcher, but the jury is still out....no power hitters......weak bench.....and a bunch of kids for pitchers.
If we are lucky half of the pitchers will turn out to be ok. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we have not bottomed out yet. We are still in tear down mode...not fully into rebuild mode. We still have to get someone for first, third, then we need to step up the bull pen, determine who our starting staff will be, find a power hitter or two, build some bench strength, find a manager, new coaches and then we will begin to move toward a .500 ball club.
The fans who think this team is a season or two away from contending need to put down the crack pipe.
Peter Angelos and the previous regime of genius management have put this franchises in complete disarray. At least now we have a plan.....trade away vets and build up a young talent base. Some of the kids will succeed, some will not. Our challenge will be to make sure we keep the right kids, and not trade them away.
We have a long way to go....we need better leaders and players........and a nice big scoop of lady luck would also help.
It could be worse......we could be long suffering Cubs fans.

Pete; I read and liked your column today about Huff. It brings to mind something I have been thinking that I would be grateful to hear your opinion on.
It seems to me that when AM took over the Os they were little better than an expansion team. We had 5 guys who were good enough to envision as starters on a contending club. Roberts, Nick, Miggy, Bedard and Ray, just 5 guys on their 25 man roster. We had one third of an outfield, a terrible catcher, and aging vets on the downside of their careers at first and third.
After Bedard and Miggy got dealt to try to improve a horrendous farm system and Ray got hurt, it left us with just two guys, Roberts and Nick, that would be legitimate starters on a contender. If we were better than an expansion team, it was not by much.
To me, if you buy a piece of real estate with a dilapitated house on it, the only way forward is to knock down the house and set about laying the foundation for something you can build and be proud of.
Unfortunately, it is also true that for sometime after you bulldoze the house, you are left with something worse than what you had yesterday, something completely unliveable. It is however the only way.
The Os were never going to be turned around in 2 years. Probably not by next year either. What I see is the last pieces of the old being carted away, and AM setting in place the foundation of the future. He has done a good job so far, even if it has not shown up in the win loss column.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The analogy is a good one, but I think it's fair to ask whether the Orioles are building a three-bedroom house or a five-bedroom house. We don't know the answer to that yet, and won't until they have a chance to sign a couple of key contributors.

I wonder if Raffy had anything to do with all of those cialis ads?
Posted by: bms | August 19, 2009 2:11 PM
frox, home record is better than away. But since you asked I am one game under .500. The fact is you should go to all of them.
Let me ask you this. If Huff does not perform well in Detroit and they elect not to sign him back, do you want him back as a free agent for less money?

I think everyone has a win against the Nats. I went to opening day (Guthrie win), a midweek May game against the Tigers (D. Hernandez's first start and win), the friday game in Philly (Hill started and won), a Friday night game against the Nats (Bergeson start and win), a Saturday night game against the Blue Jays (another win by Hill which is also rare) and last week's Friday nighter against the Angels (Tillman's first win).
I am fine if you all pitch in and get me season tickets for next year. My wife may not be, but I would do it for the team!

All Oriole pitchers should be required to wear "SLUMP BUSTER" warm-up shirts while shagging until they prove otherwise.
Oriole's "great" young pitching talent...MYTH. Average at best...REALITY.
What do you get when you mix HOPE, DISPAIR, ANGER, FRUSTRATION, DECEPTION, DISTORTION and IMPULSIVITY together???
An Oriole fan still buying tickets.

Pete: What did the young boxer Cialis say to the older boxer Viagra?. I know it will be hard to beat you, you old stiff, but I am trained to last all 12 rounds and you will be lying on the ground by then!
Sorry that you had extra work to do.
