Red Sox: Clay jarred

Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz didn't deserve to get the win in this game, even though Terry Francona gave him more than an adequate opportunity to squeeze a "W" out of a rocky performance in which he came within a run of blowing a seven-run lead before the Sox exploded on the Orioles bullpen.

All Buchholz had to do was get through the fifth without coming unraveled again to position himself for the victory, but he gave up Adam Jones' 18th home run, then walked Nick Markakis and gave up a single to Aubrey Huff to exhaust the patience of his manager.

If you're an O's fan, it's probably hard to fathom the fact that your team has scored seven runs in four-plus innings and only needs seven more to tie the game.

Instant update: If you're keeping score at home, Ty Wigginton just hit into the Orioles sixth double play in their last nine innings. I'm actually kind of impressed.

Pete,

It's actually not hard to fathom at all. If there is another way to lose that nobody couldn't possibly imagine, wait a couple of games, the O's will find it. Afterall, this is the team that lost 30-3 to the Rangers a couple of seasons ago.

I'm going to blame the double plays on the umpire today, he's calling pitches at the ankle strikes.

Doesn't really work for yesterday so much though...

Pete,

And to think the SOX didn't get Roy Halladay because they would NOT give up Buchholz???????? Go Figure!

Excellent game today. Scored 10 runs.
Oops, gave up a wopping 18.
I think the entire pitching staff could be swapped out with no ill effects. The team's supposed next closer has a 3+ ERA and can't keep the ball in the ballpark. But that's just par for the course. And someone is worried about bringing up Matusz? How can he be worse than this?

This team lost a 3 game series where Smoltz and Bucholtz pitched. How? Because only the Oriole staff started guys who managed to pitch worse than those 2.
AM knows this team stinks. He knows they can barely pitch, and are routinely clobbered by good teams. He also knows that when this team does turn the corner, it will do so with an entirely new infield and a bunch of new arms.

My guess is that before this entire team pulls a Gibbons effective 7/31/09'...McPhail has to let Dave go & bring in a manager that will not put up with this BS & call a dog a dog. This new manager will be asked if he wants in right now to stop the bleeding, assess the personel & make a game plan for next year & beyond. This is fairly unfortunate because Trembley did his best to make chicken salad out of chicken sh-t. However, we all know the name of the game & that is the manager takes the fall for underachieving primi-donnas.Personally, I would have loved to see Dave make it here when real talent came through & the Mora's of the team were sent packing. That may happen only because Andy was the one who hired him & has been the main cheerleader for patience. However, the Rodney Dangerfield of the O's with every manager he's played for may have accelerated Dave's departure with his latest salvo.
I think the odds are 60/40 Dave is gone within a week or two & the new manager will be Buck Showalter. I think he starts asap to ensure no ongoing pathetic quitting by these losers & the fire of Earl will be breathing down their backs.
Dave deserved better & if anyone was disrespected it was he for having way too much faith in a few too many losers on this team. Hope he can make it through this but, usually Mora's mouth is a sign the wheels are coming off. What would be nice to see is players coming out in defense of Dave to put Mora to rest...however, don't hold your breath.

With you Jack. The coaching staff needs to go too as the culture has got to change...Kranitz maybe the exception. The approaches have to change... hitting, baserunning, hustle, etc.. Being in Florida, I see a fair share of Rays games on the tube, and Joe Madden will bench ANYONE who doesn't hustle. Bj Upton TWICE last year. There is a long long way to go to even compete in this division. The Os can spend plenty, but they can't outspend NY and Bos, but they can out hustle them, can run the bases better, and can have a better approach in each at bat. They need a manager who demands it and will not look the other way no matter who doesn't follow the plan.

Oh yea, Jay Gibbons Mora.

I've always been a Mora fan, but I just can't support him here. It's bad enough that Trembley has to sit there and watch his team get totally outplayed by the Red Sox, but then he has to hear sour grapes from Mora because he's not playing. Melvin, you're not playing because you just aren't producing like you have in the past. Here you are judged by what are you doing for me now, not what did you did for me last year. It's a business, and Dave has to decide who gives him a better chabce of winning. After all, when the team loses and loses, who gets canned, the underachievers on the team, or the manager? We all know the answer to that one.

How does Mora not get released after that rant. And Ortiz, comparing the Red Sox situation to the Orioles? Just another foolish athlete who will be spending his brain matter disavowing or excusing his steroid use. Silly. They should both be quiet.
Masterson, who if he were on the Orioles would be on the "don't touch" list, gets traded for another potent bat to add to a good lineup. Let's see how respected Ortiz will feel when Martinez gets some of his at bats...
As for the Sox, I think they are in a period of their history when they just cannot screw up, no matter what they do. Bring guys up from the minors, they smack the ball all over the park. Mr DL, Drew, gets one at bat in the series and hits a 3 run double, then limps off. Epstein manages to unload a guy(Lugo) and his 13 mm contract when they were going to release him anyway. Lugo is not even out the door when Epstein says it was the worst signing of his tenure. Get away with having Smoltz in the rotation.
Think of this: Almost half of the Red Sox +20 wins are due to their ridiculous record against the Orioles! Red Sox nation should be thankful they have a team in Baltimore to beat up on.

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
