He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in

Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

If we're going to use the rest of the year to evaluate players...Guthrie is every bit as bad as he's looked. Litmus Test: retiring the bottom of the A's order without any damage being inflicted. Grade: F.
He had all year to figure this out, and hasn't. Disappointing.
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Can't disagree. I don't know what to think of him right now. I think this point even more toward the need for a front-line free agent starter, but the pickings are going to be thin.

Obviously, we are not evaluating players if Mora is still on the team in anything other than a defensive replacement capacity. He should be used the way Belanger was in his last years with the Os, kept as far from the plate as possible. His post-allstar game renaissance has resulted in a .235 BA, a .284 OBP, and a .279 SLG.
Posted by: Bryan | August 10, 2009 7:51 PM
first and second no outs and the 2-3-4 hitters up against a rookie with an era 6+. The chances of not getting a run are pretty much near 0.
Not for the Orioles, who just stink with RISP. How else do you explain a 270 avg and near last in the league in runs scored.Forget bringing guys in.
Except for Mora, how do excuse the guys that are here?
Posted by: jim66 | August 10, 2009 8:10 PM
Did anybody see those stats MASN brought up on the worst drops in slugging percentage in baseball? Its like all Orioles (Mora Huff Luke), big papi, Milton Bradley and Josh Hamilton HMMMMMMM a Ranger former Ranger known roid user and Oriole players hmmmm maybe this is how you now identify users hahah

Unwatchable baseball. Thank god ESPN has the Sox vs Tigers tonight!
Posted by: Sicko | August 10, 2009 8:18 PM
This team f****** sucks.
Posted by: Thomas | August 10, 2009 8:21 PM
Guthrie already has 100 pitches LOL
Posted by: Greg | August 10, 2009 8:23 PM
Leave Guthrie alone!!!
He is still devastated that his brokeback cowboy Zaun is gone…
Posted by: Anonymous | August 10, 2009 8:26 PM
Pathetic
Posted by: John | August 10, 2009 8:27 PM
When is Weiters going to learn how to field his position? He just jumped out of his shoes on the full count curveball Guthrie threw, nearly standing up before realizing it was a curveball. His gaffe made the pitch appear high, however it caught the corner and looked like a strike. The ump called ball and the mistake loaded the bases.
His mental errors continue.

The MASN sales pitch is really wearing thin. Stop interviewing minor leagers and saying that "someday, they hope to be a part of what they're watching on the field."
Not if they're in their right minds they don't.

Oz
Everything is okay. This is a rebuilding year we are not trying to contend but to learn and gain players. The Orioles don’t have it turned on this season but I assure you next season they are going to flip the switch. They have the ability to do that man.

How could this happen to me
I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run
The night goes on as I'm fading away
I'm sick of this life
I just want to scream
How could this happen to me

Embarrassing! The Nationals figured out how to beat the lower echelons of their league, but we just get worse and worse. This game proves it...Trembley is done.
Posted by: Flaosfan | August 10, 2009 8:40 PM
LOL,
Those minor leaguers had this look on their faces like ummmm we are here because you paid us lady now do this interview so we can bail… hahaha
Posted by: Anonymous | August 10, 2009 8:41 PM
Pete,
I hope you had the courtesy to let Kelly Gregg answer a few questions before you dumped him like that. I'm surprised he would still come on your show knowing you were advertising his dismissal on your blog...
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Great catch there. I just went back and had to read it about three times to figure out what you were saying. Hilarious.

Oh look at this hahahah Mother Nature doesn’t even want the O’s to win!
Posted by: EDDIE | August 10, 2009 9:10 PM
what a sorry game to watch tonight. the a's have a pitcher with a 6+ era the orioles make him look like cy young guthrie looks like a pitcher throwing batting practice.jim palmer was comenting about guthrie not having a out pitch this year. he looks like he doesn't have anything to get the oponents out. the nationals are playing better baseball than the orioles have done lately

Why don't Trembley try and shake Guthrie up. Let him pitch out of the bullpen for awhile
Posted by: doc in baltimore | August 10, 2009 9:29 PM
Pete,
I was cracking up while reading these posts. You want to talk Kelly Gregg, while anonymous wants Trembley fired and the rest of the posters want to talk O's. I have to tell you the O's are a very lucky organization to have such a loyal fan base even after sucking for so long.
Posted by: Slugger | August 10, 2009 9:39 PM
Slugger,
Personally I don’t know why I follow this team. I Probably should go to therapy or something.. The leftover fans are a unique bunch of comedians and losers but cool people
Posted by: TED | August 10, 2009 9:49 PM
Doc in Bmore,
The sad thing is I don’t think we can even do that.. As bad as Guthrie is as of right now hes like our 2nd or 3rd best pitcher!
Posted by: John | August 10, 2009 10:00 PM
Ditto what Doc said, put Guthrie in the bullpen but it doesn't necessarily need to be the O's bullpen. Replace him in the rotation with any young minor league pitcher that needs experience, perhaps Erbe.
Get Pie and other young O's more at bats, no need to waste at bats on Mora, Huff, Scott or Wiggington. I still like some of these vets but the O's need to completely think about getting their young talent ready to play. Getting wins is irrelevant. In fact the more the Os lose the more they increase their draft status for next year.
The Rays were terrible for years but did that effect their World Series run last year? Fans just need to be a little more patient and really support the young guys and not worry about getting wins this year.
Posted by: Patrick | August 10, 2009 10:00 PM
I wonder if Pete even watched tonight’s game. He really needed to take good notes so he can spin it for us mopes tomorrow.. :) The poor guy deserves some kind of award for his Orioles imagination this season.
Posted by: +NO HOPE+ | August 10, 2009 10:06 PM
Trembley is making the case for him to be unemployed next year stronger and stronger each day. The Os have 2nd and 3rd with no outs losing 5 to 0 in the 7th and have their number 9 hitter coming up and he doesn't hit for him with his everyday cleanup hitter on the bench? What????!!!!!
I rrrreally wanted the O's to sign Adam Dunn during the offseason. He eventually signed for the reasonable price of 8 million with the Nats, and how has he performed? 30 homers, 84 RBIs and a .281 average and there is still alot of games to be played. This guy is a solid 40 homer run guy who is very very reasonably priced by baseball standards. He's only 29 and could probably get better in the future.
Posted by: Patrick | August 10, 2009 10:14 PM
Hey Oz - anyone who knows anything about baseball would not call a catcher being crossed up as a gaff? It happens to every team. It might have been guthrie that made the mistake? But I guess you sitting there with your beer know better? Frustration as an Oriole fan is everywhere - at least be rational when calling out a 23 year old rookie catcher huh?
Posted by: Gary | August 10, 2009 10:21 PM
Ted
Hopefully I'm in the lot with the comedians. And you already are in therapy, Pete's the therapist. But I think he's getting ready to jump ship on his patients.
Posted by: Patrick | August 10, 2009 10:22 PM
Patrick et al,
At this point fans have no choice but to be patient. The O's front office and ownership for better or for worse are not affected by fan sentiment as the team is going backwards rather than forwards. There is no urgency shown at any level in the organization. Fans are anxious, but the front office subscribes to the idea of "good things take time". Considering the team across the Beltway is doing even worse, they don't feel threatened.
There is no secret to what Tampa Bay Rays did in 2008. They did it with pitching. Their team ERA was a more than respectable 3.82. The O's in 2008 during the regular season scored more runs (782) than the Rays (774); however they allowed 869 runs whereas the Rays allowed 671. The difference is overwhelming.
Can the O's do the same thing? Yes it is possible; however for those who keep dwelling on following the Rays success you have to look at the circumstances under which they got to the World Series.:
1. The Yankees had an off year where their pitching was horrible, and their hitters were also struggling with injuries. They did not have enough depth. They are now loaded with hitting and pitching for years to come. Not to mention the new ball park that is home run heaven
2. The Redsox choked and started struggling with the bat at the wrong time during the ALCS
In short, yes the Rays were good, but they also got lucky. How likely it is for the Sox and the Yanks to have a bad season and for us to have a good one? Call me cynical, but I don't see all the chips falling into the right place for the O's anytime soon.
Posted by: Slugger | August 10, 2009 10:29 PM
This is getting old. Losing can happen to anybody, but it is the way we are losing. It simply looks like the guys are going through the motions out there. Of course it might just be that this team is simply not competitive at the major league level, but I cannot believe that is the case.
Oakland is showing how a young team, even while out of the playoff race, should play and improve. I just don't get that feeling from the Orioles. Of course, this is the norm around here after the Allstar break. The names on the jersey may change, but the results don't.
Posted by: Keith | August 10, 2009 10:30 PM
Tonight was a very educational game for me as a beleagured O's fan - Keith hit it on the head: This team is lazy and not hustling. Sorry Pete, you can't tell me they are giving their all out there. They'v checked out.
Hey O's - look at Oakland. They're out of the running, but still playing hard and working ooposing pitchers, fouling balls off, etc.
What a terrible game.
Posted by: yea | August 10, 2009 10:44 PM
Maybe we can just let Scott, Mora and Huff go at this point and let Bell, Snyder and one other young player come up...If we are going to rebuild with 23 year olds lets do it right. Mora can still field his position but he clearly is horrible batting. Scott is pathetic at the plate. Luke: Your job is to get the bat on the ball and hit it somewhere in the field of play.
Lets get Arrietta up and give Guthrie some time at Norfolk. Maybe the time there would help him for next year.
Posted by: Dan | August 10, 2009 10:46 PM
Good points Slugger. But I think in the years to come that the Yankees may again be struck by misfortune. Their closer, SS and catcher, to name a few players, are aging. A.J. Burnett has a history of problems, perhaps injuries will strike their pitching staff. The Os lost their 3 most significant starting pitchers this year for extended periods of time that can happen to the Yankees too.
Maybe I'll be wrong but I think things can work out for the Os in the not too distant future.
Posted by: Patrick | August 10, 2009 10:59 PM
Such an embarrassing loss at home.. If we cant play well against the A’s the Angels are going are going to make their series real ugly… Trembley might be a goner sooner than later..
Posted by: seth | August 10, 2009 11:00 PM
The Orioles are the team bad teams play to get better.
Posted by: Anonymous | August 10, 2009 11:02 PM
Here's hoping someone talks to Nick Markakis and convinces him to lift some weights this offseason. He's pretty thin at 6'2" 190lbs and I can't count how many homers he's missed by 5-10ft this year. Dude could have probably 10 more dingers than what he's got now. That would make his stats look more like .310 23hr 92rbi as opposed to .296 13hr 78rbi.
Don't get me wrong. I love Nick and he's one of the only reasons I still bother to pay attention to the O's at this point. I'd love to see him take the next step towards becoming the player we all hope he'll become though.

Total freefall! These games should not be allowed on television! They are cruel and unusual!! I think Oriole fans have been very patient considering the decade plus years of incompetence so please AM, Angelos and whoever is going to be our new manager make some trades and at least make a halfway respectable team for us to watch.
Posted by: Broken Wings | August 10, 2009 11:22 PM
This team is a big bowl of bad
Posted by: Anonymous | August 10, 2009 11:24 PM
2nd and 3rd, no outs, don't score.Clearing yet another obstacle from Futility Road, the tragic act rolls on.You can expect the beatdowns from the better teams. I guess from the bad teams too.How about a few pitiful postgame laments to wrap it up?
