Pie's big adventure (updated)

felixapcatch.jpgGuess Felix Pie's hand is okay, because he just came up for the second time in the seventh inning and tripled to become only the fourth player in Orioles history to hit for the cycle...and here's an even quirkier stat. Cesar Izturiz was on deck needing a home run to become the fifth Oriole to turn that trick.

The last Orioles player to hit for the cycle was Aubrey Huff on June 29, 2007. Cal Ripken and Brooks Robinson are the other two Orioles players who have accomplished the rare feat.

Izturis had a single, double and triple -- in that order -- before coming up for his opportunity at the cycle, but bounced out to first base to end the seven-run rally.

Pie didn't just help the Orioles with his bat tonight. He also showed off his five-tool talent when he made a fantastic diving play to rob Chone Figgins of a possible extra-base hit in the third inning (upper right).

Apparently, Pie got under the skin of Angels manager Mike Scioscia with his excited gyrations at third base after the triple. Scioscia stared him down as he went to the mound to make a pitching change, and apparently got the message across that you don't show up the opposition with a huge lead.

"I'm sad, because I showed too much emotion on the field,'' Pie said afterward. "I apologize to Mike Scioscia and the Angels for that. I just got too excited."

Mike Scioscia is piece of garbage. How can anyone sit there and stew like that after Pie hits for the cycle? Pie, the 24 year-old who has struggled this year to find his stroke and place in the line-up. Hitting for the Orioles, who are 25 games back in the AL East and hungry for positive developments to rally around. Scioscia is such a hot-headed a-hole; if he plugs someone for that I'll go to the game tomorrow and give him "a Victorino".

Seriously, how anyone can respect Mike Scioscia is beyond me. This is the guy who tried to pick a fight with 70 year-old Frank Robinson in 2005. The guy who knowingly allowed his pitchers to doctor balls. I know his teams have been winners (albeit in the only 4-team division in baseball, with much less competition than the AL East), but if I was an Angels fan I'd be ashamed of him.

First off. I'm not a Pie fan but give kudos were they're due. Great highlight for Felix. Now Mike Scioscia shows he has no class. From one old catcher to another, you could not expect him to stop at second when he has the extremely rare opportunity to hit for the cycle. I played until 45 yrs old and never had the chance. Mike Scioscia is bush league. I'll post this same message on the Angels website.

What exactly was Scioscia mad about? That his team was getting beat? Happens every night in baseball. Was he upset with something the Orioles did?

Coming up, one shaving cream pie for Pie.

Scioscia was mad that Pie stretched it into a triple when they had a insurmountable lead. Its an ols unwritten rule amongst ballplayers. But it doesn't apply when you have a shot at the cycle. Overshadowed by it all was Tillman's first win. Kudos to Chris. He'll always remember this night. He just got the 'creampie' in the clubhouse!

Wow!
Give Terry Crowley a 10 year extension....unless we get shut-out tomorrow...then fire him.

Seriously, Pete, Do sense the O's may have hit the bottom the last two or three weeks (after 12 years) and now are headed back up in the right direction?
It seems the game is all about starting pitching and being solid up the middle. You would have to say those areas are looking quite bright for the near future.

I know you can never read much into one game, but we do have alot more young talent hanging around the yard it seems.

Oh yeah... don't try to put Pie through waivers quite yet.
I won't say I told you so but where are all the Macphail bashers at tonight?

Yeah and all you guys who thought the Nats would surpass us and wouldn't listen to Dr. Pete say "no way Hozay"..how's that working?

Has Sciocia not seen our bullpen? It is hard to imagine a lead so large that I would feel comfortable with. Even the O's pulled off a 9 run inning to beat the Sox this year. Grow up! Unwritten rules are stupid.

Man...I'm pumped for Felix Pie!!! People on here have just been savage to the guy and he's actually been playing a lot better lately. Here's hoping he can keep it up!!

Good for Felix Pie!! Here's a guy who struggled mightily, made numerous, embarrassing mistakes and is mostly disliked by the Orioles fans - but, he took it all like a man, he worked hard, never quit and tonight he hit for the cycle. I am very proud of him. He has really showed a tremendous amount of character by working hard and ignoring the naysayers. Good for Felix Pie!!!

Great to see Felix have a good game, loved the enthusiasm he showed after successfully sliding into third base. That's the kind of hustle and love for the game I'd like to see out of the rest of the team. Guess sitting on the bench really makes you realize how fun playing the game of baseball can be.

Good to see Tillman get his first W, although I was a bit disappointed Dave didn't let him finish the inning. Last two outings he's been taken out after giving up a single when he had two outs. I'd like to see him given an opportunity to get out of an inning late in the game, especially when we had a big lead like tonight. Good confidence booster for the future. Although Tillman is young and both outings he was over 100 pitches so I can't blame Dave either.

I can't believe I'm saying this after what he did earlier in the season, but hopefully Pie will get some more playing time over the final months of the season.

Somebody send the Angels a package of Pampers and some formula because they have an oversized baby in their dugout.

And again Manfra turns in a lousy performance calling a triple...especially one for the cycle. "Pie's at first. He's at second. He's into third." Pete, the local kid doing York Revolution play-by-play puts Manfra to shame.

More Pie please....

I hope they can work him into the lineup a bit more frequently (and leave Luke Scott on the pine if he's going to continue to be in such a funk)

Tonight's lineup was more of what the Os need minus Mora. They need Pie and Nolan in the starting lineup every day. They need to develop these guys and give them steady playing time.

I'm surprised Trembley didn't destroy Pie with such irregular playing time and he really has shown alot of heart and character to have hung in there so well. I just think it's great that he hit for the cycle and the 24 year old now has a somewhat respectable .254 batting average. Of course if he was 30 something it wouldn't be too respectable.

But Kudos to Felix all around. And who wouldn't be excited to hit for the cycle and furthermore he showed super class to apologize to the Angels as well even though it probably wasn't necessary.

Is Anonymous out of town? A night to enjoy baseball in B-more. A big relief for everyone.

The guy even shows class by diffusing the situation. You gotta love this guy.

Don't bet against Pie not being in the lineup tomorrow. This is how Trembley runs this team.

felix doesn't have anything to apologize for. Somebody tell Sciocia that its ok to tip your cap to the other guy if he kicks your butt...what a d-bag. Kudos to Tillman...pitched tough and couldn't get his curveball over...and Jimmy Palmer's got it right when he's talking about how most in the bigs don't chase the big curve ball like they do in the minors...which makes Chris' outing a little more impressive because he was a 2 pitch pitcher.

Maybe the entire Os team showed up last night at M&T Bank Stadium. I hope they keep it up.

we have picked on pie all season let him have his time to celebrate no need for mike to get bent out of shape over it.

SCREW Scioscia, I was at the game and I'd be upset if Piehadn't got so emotional, what a moment for a player. I've been going to games since I was 5 years old and I'm 47 now and that's the very 1st time I've seen a player hit for the cycle live, what a crazy moment it was for us fans also, been a while since I've heard Camden Yards that emotional.

Heck, I turned to my son after Tillman was taken out and said the kid needed to learn some manners, that when you pitch a game like he did AND you get an exploding standing ovation like he did you tip your hat to the fans as you leave (not that it really affected me but to an old schooler like me thats just proper).

WAY to Felix, this is the 1st time my son actually treated me to a ballgame and what a lasting memory you helped give us of the night. Next time grab some dirt and throw toward Scioscia in the dugout in celebration. Poor damn loserw

I'd much rather see Pie push for the triple and "rub it in" on the Angels, than for him to backdoor his way to the cycle, like Jeff Frye for the Jays a few years back, who needed this single and stopped at first after hitting one to the gap.

Couldn't have happened to a better guy tonight. Pie needed that, and the O's needed this HUGE win.

Hey Pete...what do you suppose the Trembley bashers will jump on tonight? That he didn't get his boys to 20? :P

WOW - WHO were those guys wearing the Orioles unis out there tonite? Certainly NOT our bunch of SAD SACKS??!! NOW that's how you are SUPPOSED to play the game boys! Maybe Tremly DID take them all to the Ravens game last night after all and they learned a thing or two! Let's see who shows up Sat nite?! I have thought Pie was getting his act together fairly well the last 1/2 of the games they have played and tonite he really had a break out game! GOOD FOR HIM! If Trembley sits him Sat he SHOULD get canned!! Ya gotta reward a performance like that dontcha?? I only got one complaint - when did it become "cool" for the hometeam pitchers to utterly IGNORE their hometeam fans giving them a standing ovation when they come out of a game! SO impolite and SO short sighted and so UNclassy! Palmer needs to have a talk with them or better yet their manager needs to have a little closed door meeting and teach them some manners and etiquite!! What, you toooo good to acknowledge your fans? They should get BOOED for doing that and it needs to be corrected. ANDY, Trembly - you listening??

Congrats Felix for your hitting for the cycle tonight - especially since you had to pick up the triple to complete the cycle. I don't understand Scioscia beef (especially since his team has an expressway to the playoffs - see Texas' meltdown against the Red Sox tonight), maybe he was upset it wasn't a one run game and he couldn't play little ball. Two steps forward tonight, probably one back tomorrow - but it's all going forward.

Fire Pie.

Pie has character.... and now a cycle ... to go along with all his hard work. Great for ya Felix!
As I have said before, he makes a great 4th OF for us......unless he keeps improving and forces himself into the lineup!

A brief shining moment!
Watch! The zeros will nine runs and strand thirty base runners over the next six games!

Great job by Pie, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being excited about hitting for the cycle.

Scioscia can suck it. I guarantee one of his players would have done the exact same thing in the exact same situation and he would not stare down him down as he entered the dugout.

There were several glimpses of the future tonight. I can't wait till all those glimpses become an everyday visual.

Great game. Go O's!

Go O's!

michael whiteford;

Do not know where you have been since the beginning of May, but welcome back. While you were gone, Pie has hit 308 with a 494 SL%. Even excluding tonights great effort he has hit 280 over that span with a 400+ SL%. That is pretty close to what AJ did for us last year. Along the way his fielding has greatly improved and he is probably the most enthusiastic guy on the team. What is not to like about that from a 4th outfielder.

Scioscia just comes off from this looking like an idiot, and a poor sport. Pie was enjoying the moment (and that was a moment worth celebrating) and Scioscia has a problem with that? So Pie apologizes to Scioscia. He didn't have to do that, and I for one feel it was totally unnecessary. Kind of shows you the type of person Pie is. Shame on you Mike Scioscia!

wow!! those birds looked MAD last night--GREAT effort!!! no dogs out there last night...now do it again--see if we can send a good team outta town with a series loss..

Scioscia, What would you have done if the shoe was on the other foot? Same thing, give me a break. The fact is the score could have been a lot worse. If Izturis scratched out one more hit, and put it over the fence.

Anyway good for Pie, at least he is earning his playing time now.

Games like this show how foolish it is for O's management (AM, DT) to always profess such low expectations. As I've said many times, the O's talent level is equal to or surpasses most big league teams. Any so-called leadership who always talk about their expectation to lose should be fired on the spot. Trading the closer was another brilliant move that will allow AM to buy another year or two of losing while waiting for the Commissioner job to open up.

So Tillman didn't acknowledge the crowd; big deal. They're MLB players. They lost any respect of the fans a long time ago. Now their just millionaires that play baseball. Why should they show you any respect?

And NO, you don't stop at second because Mike Scioscia might get upset about it. You rub it in his face and see if he wants to start a fight about it tomorrow.
He's a classless a-ss before the game started and just showed it off for everyone.

Brian Roberts is on pace to be a 60/30 guy (doubles/stolen bases). He is on pace for 61 doubles, which would be the most doubles in a single season since Joe Medwick had 64 in 1936. The all-time single season record is 67 by Earl Webb in 1931. Roberts has a chance to become the first modern-day player to ever hit 60 doubles.

If he maintains his current pace, Roberts would finish the season with 13 HR, 70 RBIs, 118 runs, 61 doubles, and 33 steals.

Not to shabby for a "lazy" second baseman who doesn't hustle.

Being in Hawaii, I get all the Angels games on TV. When Pie finished the cycle the Angels announcers, Rex Hudler and another guy I didn't catch, were praising Pie' s achievement the entire time.

Scioscia's attitude toward Pie made me hate him a little bit more. You would think that anyone in baseball would praise the rare achievement of hitting for the cycle.

It was a very tasteless act by Scioscia to act the way he did.

Go O's!

Abc
You're a moron. No one is professing low expectations. That was for fans to be patient. No one told these players to go out and lose. And if you think we're more talented than most teams you're not watching this team. Who do you want running this team other than AM, Frank Wren who signed Belle to appease the fickle masses in Baltimore? If you want a keep a psedo-closer that would have eventually gotten exposed fine, I'll take the 22 yo that is mashing the crap out of the ball right now any day of the week. Not only are closers overrated they are not that difficult to find.

I only hope the Angels throw at Pie for "showing them up". What's been missing this season from the Orioles is that visible burning desire to win, and likewise a visible disgust with losing. Pie hustles his tail off, as does Reimold, and hopefully that spreads through the team.

The Orioles need to play with a chip on their shoulder, and maybe the Angels are just the team to put it there . . .

I was at the game last night. It was a lot of fun watching the Orioles finally play a productive offensive game, where they scored in more than 1 or 2 innings. There were still a couple of bone head plays made, but both guys (Pie and Wieters) made up for them, Wieters with his arm and Pie with his bat, and a spectacular catch.

Pie is starting to show why he was such a high level prospect. The ball is really beginning to jump off his bat, and he is flashing some speed, and an arm in the outfield. I still think his instincts are questionable, but he looks like a very good option for the fourth outfielder. If he continues to improve, he will start to make the other outfielders uncomfortable with their job security. Keep it going Pie!

A final note on the fans. They are not nearly as vocally supportive as I remember from days at Memorial Stadium. I understand the lethargy produced by so many losing seasons, but we should be doing what we can to keep a positive atmosphere in beautiful Camden Yards. It is also a helluva lot more fun to watch a ballgame when the crowd is excited and vocal and having fun with the game.

Good game, good win, good for Pie, bad for Soscia... still....

- so we are now 9-19 since the break
- Wieters is not powering up and Reimold has seemed to have lost his power
- how many games in a row has Albers come in and given up runs

Let's not think the season has been salvaged because of one blowout in our favor for a change...

Great night for everyone! 'The cycle" is a bogus accomplishment--wouldn't a HR, triple and two doubles be better, or four homers?--but it's four hits and ten bases so it's quite a game. And again, I'm puzzled and frustrated that bloggers here were ready to get rid of Pie a month into the season, but they're very positive that Tillman and Matusz will overcome their horrible beginnings. All our young players may work out, or none of them, but let's give them a chance.

If one of the O's gets hit today. If I was the Oriole pitcher the next inning I would toss one right at Scioscia in the dugout. He is the Roy Turner of MLB! He should apologize to Pie, and say he was just mad his pitcher could not get an out.
Scioscia is a classless ass!

We were at the game last night and it was just terrific! Everyone was so excited including the players. It felt like the old days.

... and the fireworks after the game were truly amazing.

David -- Thanks for the message...everybody loves a buzzkill!! The generally positive comments on here today (which don't happen very often) are fans celebrating a nice win, not proclaiming changed expectations.

I might have been mad when Huff took third on the fly ball to center with a 9 run lead. Dont need to do that, but you don't pass up a cycle. Maybe Scocisia didn't know hit hit for the cycle?

He was a happy guy, let him enjoy it...

Whatever the O's did last night, it was far classier than the Rangers running it up with 30. I would have drilled someone in the a$$ that night.

Wayne Hicks noted the difference in the fans at OPACY from those at old Memorial Stadium. I agree. We would sit up in Section 34 and would "call out" opposing players and coaches all game long. We made the opposing base coaches stay in their coaching boxes. Just a reminder of whose stadium they were in. I challenge the fans this weekend to "call out" Mike Scioscia and let him know whose stadium he's in. Don't tell us when he thinks there is too much celebration. We need more exuberence and hubris from these young guys. They should be offended by Scioscia's reaction to Pie's cycle. The O's and their fans need to show some backbone.

Rumor has it Trembley is a goner in a few weeks

Dave Trembley will now bench him for 3 games to cool off.

Strange game. Orioles paste 16 on one of the better teams in baseball. Pie hits for the cycle and draws ire from opposing manager. And Vlad gets a hit off a Tillman curveball that had bounced in the dirt.

Nice win and fun, but the key to winning for next year is still: 1) Replace the coaching staff, 2) get a power hitting corner infielder, 3) get a veteran pitcher who has won. One win does not change the reality of this season.

Great game Pie, keep playing hard when you get to play. Maybe others will follow your lead. The heck with mike scioscia, keep having fun. And the next time throw correctly to your second baseman. Other wise good game

There are a lot of quality hitters not on the list of those who have hit for the cycle. For Pie to do it with the toughest hit of the set in his last at-bat, heck I'd celebrate too.

Baseball IS a strange game but the Orioles are as strange a team and franchise as I have ever seen. Its hard to believe any team can be that inconsistent so consistently.

Against Oakland they couldn't hit their plate with their folks and against the Angels and a red-hot Weaver, they pound the ball all over the park.

Nothing they do this year surprises me anymore.u

Baseball is indeed a strange and humbling game. We like to think that Pie and the Orioles can use this game to build something for the future but just as likely, it's possible the Angels win tonight 9-1 and Pie goes 0-4 with three K's. That's just the way it is. That's baseball.

Earl Weaver used to say that momentum is only as good as the next day's starting pitcher, and he's right. That's why Zach Greinke is 11-7 for a Royals team that is 25 games below .500. Give me a team full of Zach Greinkes and we might win something.

Luke Scott was so hot he could have supplied power to Dundalk for a month. Now he's so cool he can't get anything started with kerosene and hand grenades. All we can do is keep at it and hope the little things start to go in our favor.

BTW, did anyone see Kyle Boller go 3-9 for 25 yards in the Rams' 23-20 win over the Ryan Jets last night? Morbid curiosity made me switch back and forth between that game on NFL Net and the O's win.

Pete: Do you think Pie is back on the O's radar as a possible future everyday player or are they still looking at him as a career backup outfielder?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't think they see him playing ahead of the three guys out there now.

I have a different take on Tillman's not tipping his cap to acknowledge the crowd:

He probably felt it was not his best performance and didn't feel the crowd reaction was fully warranted. In other words, while the crowd was happy Tillman had not met his own high expectations and therefore didn't want to agree with the crowd's assessment.

I wouldn't be surprised that, when he really has a fantastic performance, he will in fact acknowledge the crowd.

Just my 2 cents.

Seems to me, not many starters tip their cap anymore. Maybe it's because they work that deep into games like they used to, or if they do go seven or eight, someone else comes out to start the next inning.

Just one of those little things sports has lost over the years, just like a basketball player raising his hand when charged with a foul, used to happen all the time, now, never.

Don't work that deep into games, sorry.

Scioscia has no class. I can't stand that guy. He is a big baby.

Scioscia shouldn't have been mad a Pie, he should have shaken his hand and thanked him for stopping at third when he probably could have scored! Can that guy fly or what!

Maybe he wasn't glaring at Pie.... I think the bench coach who positioned the RF in the corner and the CF practically playing left field shares some responsibility for that result too.

Hey pete great artice on the veterans having to step it up the rest of the year. A little over do for my good but a great article indeed.I told you once before that i would have liked you as my boss as you always somehow make excuses for the guy's. You had to give Brian the benefit of the doubt didn't you,it would have been great just to leave it the way you did for the other players, Mora , huff, widdington, but some how poster boy always gets special treatment.

Sciosia's a moron. In case he didn't notice, the Orioles, one of the AL's lowest scoring teams, overcame a nine run deficit late in a game to beat Boston. Cleveland overcame a 10 run deficit late. Whatever the score, you don't stop playing hard.

I'm sure Sciosia didn't tell his players to stop trying just because they were behind by a large margin. This isn't football, where the team with a lead can just milk the clock (and the Prevent defense often prevents victory.) In baseball, each team gets 27 outs, which is why big comebacks sometimes happen.

Hey Pete, I just had to pop in to see where are the Pie, MacPhail, Trembley, etc haters are and wow...I just don't see them today. Come on Slugger, KyleProBoller, Anonymous...et all. Guess they'll come back next loss and game when Pie goes 0 for 4. Congratulations Pie on a fantastic game, and to Trembley, Tillman and the entire team.

Bobby,

See your therapist as soon as possible. Your anger needs to be treated. Why is it too much to ask for management to preach the need to win now at the same time they're building a team? High expectations are the key to success for any human endeavor. Am I a "moron" for believing that too?

I think it is stupid for any major leaguer/manager to be upset with trying to continue to score. It is ridiculous.

The Seattle Mariners had a game against Cleveland a few years ago that had the Mariners up like 13 runs and then they ended up losing it in the late innings. So, don't tell me that you don't "pour it on" and it is unprofessional. What is unprofessional is whining about a professional trying to to the best they can at their job, which is to beat your @$$.

Someone needs to ask widdle Mikey Scioscia what he thinks the maximum lead for an opposing team should be before his Angels give up, forfeit, and the umpires call the game.

In fact, every manager or player who ever had the foolish impression or belief that an opponent should stop trying at any point in any game no matter what the score, should be given the option to just surrender and try again the next time, or to hang around for the entire ball game and take his beating like a man.

Hey Mikey..... it's BASEBALL... and not only is there no crying in baseball, but there's no KO's, TKO's, or Referees stopping the game because one team has gained an unfair advantage or because one team has slipped to a deficit from which in his opinion cannot be overcome.

And please.... take your Sicilian voodoo staredown and stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

Felix Pie showed your team up ?

Damn right he did.

The whole Oriole team showed your team up.

It happens. Grow up and accept it.

And I'll tell you something.... if a guy needs a triple to complete a cycle and you think he's good enough to have hit one on demand just to spite you, then you're paying that guy one helluva compliment that even your phony staredown can't contradict.

Oh and Lackey throwing at Pie tonight should have guaranteed you and Lackey both an ejectionnand suspension.
LACKEY, eh?
Very appropriate, since he's apparently yours.

Next time I'm in the stands and your team falls behind by ten runs I'm gonna holler, "Hey Mikey.... should I order another beer or do you guys give up now ?"

Jerk.

Say what you want, guys, but a lot of successful managers manage with a chip on their shoulder. It's a tool they use to keep their guys motivated and paying attention.

I'd rather have a "jerk" manager who gets maximum effort out of his guys than a guy who preaches "respect the game" while his players are getting walked all over by opposing clubs.

Mike Scoscia is a fat hotheaded turd who brings down the game, and deserves zero respect. I hope other teams run up the score every chance they get against Fat Mike. No class garbage through and through.
