Pie hurt: Figures, doesn't it? (updated)
Felix Pie is absolutely sizzling at the plate, so what happens? He was in the midst of another big game when he came up with a sore hamstring after slipping on the wet grass in center field. He stayed around long enough to get his third hit in the seventh inning before leaving the game. He might have had a chance to hit for the cycle for the second time in 15 games if he could have stayed around for the eighth. He had a single, double and home run tonight.
To review, dating back to the night he hit for the cycle against the Angels, Pie is batting .386 (17 for 44) with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games. He didn't look terribly uncomfortable coming off the field, so maybe it isn't anything that will put him on the shelf for a significant period. He said after the game that his hamstrings already were tight after playing three games on the hard artificial turf in Minnesota.
"It's okay,'' Pie said. "It's a little sore, but I think it'll be okay by tomorrow."
With Adam Jones already struggling with a back injury, utility infielder Robert Andino had to take over in center field -- making only the second appearance in center of his major league career.
Instant update: Dave Trembley just said that the club is hopeful that Jones will be able to return to the starting lineup tomorrow night. He'll take early batting practice and go through some motions in the early afternoon before a determination is made on his status. If neither he nor Pie can go, the Orioles may have to bring up journeyman outfielder Joey Gathright a few days early.

Comments
I know that Hunter probably doesn't have editorial control over what high-lights they show on the post-game show, but those idiots didn't bother to show any of Pie's hits, not even the homerun, and haven't yet mentioned his injury. When the guy screws up, it's almost like he has his own camera crew, when he does well, to MASN, it's "Pie who?"
I hate Hunter.

It's getting easier to see where this rebuilding project could really be coming together. I'm not sure i'd trade the O's outfield for any other in MLB. And i think I'd look to hold onto all four guys.I realize it would sound ridiculous to call Felix Pie "untouchable" but between the four of them there is tremendous talent and versatility and they all have somewhat different strengths that could really meld together nicely. And Wieters is starting to look very studly and throwing people out. The bullpen has strong arms. Get the young starters progressing. The trick will be to add the big stick and a #1 or #2 starter w/out coughing up too much. As a 40year fan it's tough and probably at least 2011 for serious contention but with little exception the young and new players this year have been as advertised or better.

SkipC, you are channeling my thoughts. The plan is advancing, young players panning out. No reason Tillman, Matusz, Bergesen and Guthrie can't go minimum of .500 each, which means 82 wins. Yep, I said it.

Oops, obviously meant winning 2010 season, not this one.

Pete,
I will be the first to admit that in this blog back when the deal for Pie was made , I wrote that he would not make the O's better.
But the way he is stinging the ball lately, maybe Crow has found something in this kid.

I say move Reimold to 1B/DH. Not sure if Scott is going to work out at 1B and we all know he’s a nightmare in LF. They need to trade Scott and a pitching prospect early next year for a decent, MLB ready 3B. Lou M. or Gathright can be the 4th OF. Reimold can split 1B with Aubrey and DH with Wiggy.

Ken, it really does seem like Felix, only will be mentioned on MASN, when he messes up. He had the 2nd best game of his career as an Oriole tonight including his balancing act to stay on 2B on the double he hit.
I do think one positive out of this one sided "blame Felix, but don't call any one else out," has lead a lot of the fans to rally around Felix and he's delivered. He and Baez, have taken the blame on more than one occasion, when they falter which is more than I can say for the manger and the idiot 3B coach, who might be right that some guys don't belong in the majors, but I think the same can be said for the O's coaching staff, Juan included.

Pete, I hope they do bring up Gathright early. As well as Pie has been playing lately, I'd rather have him healthy. Same with Jones.

Pete:
Any chance they bring up Fiorentino? He's had a nice year in Norfolk, and I always thought he had the tools to be competitive.

Pete's reply: Yes, he has been mentioned too.

I admit that I was calling for Pie's head after the first 90 days of the season. But, at this point, it is abundantly clear that, his ever declining list of mistakes notwithstanding, he has continued to work hard, continued to improve and is making more substantive contributions to the team. Considering the abuse that's been heaped upon this man and his willingness to continue to work hard and improve without complaint or whining, I'd say he's worth keeping and developing further. I cannot point to one other player on the team that has made the significant improvements Pie has made. There are better players on the team, but, none of them have improved as noticeably as Pie since the start of the season.

Give us more of the Pie man. With the quick wrists, and speed to go with it. Felix is a real keeper. I agree with all that MASN applauds everything Reimold does, and criticizes or neglects to comment on the good plays that Pie makes. Don't let him make a mistake, however. Well, that's what our coaching staff is here to help with. If we let this one go, it's going to come back to bite us.

Why would you promote that the O's bring up journeyman outfielder Joey Gathright when Jeff Fiorentino, one of their own products is also hitting over .300 at Norfolk?
IMHO Jeff deserves another shot, is younger and better trade value than Gathright so why not showcase him in September instead of letting him become a Rule 5 draftee?
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I wasn't promoting anything. Just speculating.

SkipC,
Sort of thinking the same thing although it would be nice to have one of the 4 outfielders having a bit more power. I would also throw Fiorentino into the mix as he seems to be doing exactly what he should in AAA - similar to Reimold last year. You create a much stronger bench allowing later game substitutions and are protected against injuries somewhat. Best all of them came up through the O's minors or were acquired very early in their career as prospects/1st year players. So much more fun to watch than the slew of veteran past their prime free agents we have seen over the past decade.

..Andy McPhail is probably grinning like the Cheshire cat--his boy is finally showing up---and it IS impressive to watch. Yeah, so he needs to work on his baserunning. My theory is, that at lower levels of professional baseball, his sheer speed and ability got him by...and he may have become a little lazy in honing his instincts...was that Morneau who threw him out by a country mile the other night? Yeah, the surprise was on you Felix... Pie is showing the tools that McPhail knew he had...they overshadows his baserunning gaffes, in my book. I mean, think of some of the bone-headed baserunners in O's history...Pat Kelly, Andres Mora, Alan (RIP) Wiggins, and more recently, Mr.'s Huff and Mora(sorry Melvin)...and yet they were still on the team. The upside is too great to overlook in Pie's case...and he's still young by MLB standards. It's easy to see that as he plays more, his confidence and comfort are increasing. Hopefully,we will get to see a heckuva player for our future.

Pete,
A week ago I wrote that I could not believe that Trembley benched Pie after having two good games in a row. How is he going to find out about this guy if he keeps benching him?
Jeez.

Looks like the outfielder will not be Joey Gathright.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Guess not.
