Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

Pete--Yes, you are right: it hurts.

Ouch
Posted by: Rusty | August 25, 2009 11:39 PM
Why on earth did Trembley let Mickolio toss 39 pitches LOL! Hes going to get fired in 40 days and its well deserved get this guy out of here!!!
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: God, this has gotten lame. The same people write the same stuff after every loss. We know, you think Trembley should be fired. Please send a joke or something once in awhile. I have to read every one of these ridiculous second-guess posts every night. Entertain me for a change.

As has happened many times in the past, the O's are the cure for all ills. When the Twins vault to the pennant, they will look to tonight, when the Orioles were totally outplayed and especially outmanaged. Totally outclassed. What's next? An home wipeout at the hands of the Indians in front of 5,000 fans?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Just a question. How can you be totally outclassed in a 6-5 loss on the road? I agree it was a crappy loss for a hundred reasons, but you can't be outclassed in a game where the other team allowed 17 baserunners.
Posted by: FlaOsFan | August 25, 2009 11:43 PM
LOL!
Posted by: Frank | August 25, 2009 11:45 PM
Another example of a game the opposing team practically handed to the O's and they still couldn't find a way to win. Losers always find a way to lose and the O's have been masters of that for a long time.
Posted by: Jon | August 25, 2009 11:46 PM
Let's call it correctly. The Orioles, day to day, do not do the little things right to win ball games. Their best ball players do not take the correct approach, e.g,, hook a ball to the right side to get the go-ahead run to third when there are none out.
The manager has no feel for the flow of a game.
As dedicated, die-hard Baltimore Oriole fans, we deserve better.
Posted by: Barry | August 25, 2009 11:47 PM
Trembley should be fired immediately. Nobody will trust his decision making the rest of the season after tonight. Hes a joke.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You know, I usually let this mindless stuff pass, but if you had an ounce of humanity, you'd feel sorry for Trembley tonight. He didn't lose this game any more than you did.
Posted by: Chris S | August 25, 2009 11:47 PM
what's funny about that is it happens on a night when the Sun has an article about limiting the young guys innings. I get the feeling that DT is doing very little to help his cause.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: If a kid needs 99 pitches to get through five and gives up comeback runs in back-to-back innings, I don't see any reason to send him out for the sixth. Now, if I knew Bass would allow five straight batters to reach base, maybe I would think differently, but it's late August and the kid is in his first pro season.
Posted by: jim66 | August 25, 2009 11:48 PM
ok pete, before you beat the hell out of me...did I say anything about leaving Matusz in the game? How about this: when Bass goes out there and stinks up the joint, get his ass out of the game before he blows the whole thing. And my comment was about Mickolio throwing 40 pitches.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Jim, you know as well as I do that if Trembley had pulled Mickolio after the eighth and Baez had coughed it up, you would have wanted Trembley's head. And if he had brought in Jim Johnson and he had coughed it up, you would have wanted Trembley's head. And if he had pulled Bass after one batter, somebody would have said, "Hey, Matusz only threw 99 pitches, he could have gotten one more guy, so the manager should be fired." It has gotten tired and lame. The team is going to win 66 games this year and that 's commensurate with the talent. And you'll probably get your new manager in a few months. So why beat yourself and Trembley up every single night?
Posted by: jim66 | August 26, 2009 12:05 AM
i agree with taking matusz out. 99 pitches in 5 innings and some tough situations is enough for the rookie.
letting Bass face 5 batters for an out, i don't agree with.
Pie trying to move to 3rd on a pop up to the dogout, not Trembley's fault.
Also, no one can predict that Markakis and Scott are going to pop out and Weiters is going to strike out. I know that you don't want to take the bat our of Markakis's hand, but would anyone else would have considered a sac bunt in that situation?
Also, the way Mickolio has been pitching, I would've left him in too against the bottom of the lineup.
I'm not saying all the loses, or this loss, are Trembley's fault, but he is an easy scapegoat with each continuing loss, and I don't believe he is the one that is going to get us to the next level. I've liked him as we've rebuilt, but its getting to be time for a change.

Pete, it's amazing how you do my thinking for me. I for one think DT has done a credible job with this team, and I don't beat the hell out of the guy every night. And no, if Baez had coughed it up I would not have gone crazy.Ditto Johnson. And 99 pitches was enough for Matusz. So I wasn't bitching when he took him out. If he took Bass out after a couple of hitters, I would not have had a problem with that either. But he didn't.
What, you think I like to see people fail? You think I like to see people lose their jobs?
Am I the nitwit posting Fire Trembley 50 times a day? Give it a rest.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm a little cranky, I admit, but my point was about all the nightly second-guessing by just about everybody here. I realize that's what happens on a blog, but you and I both knew how this was going to end in the third inning, so how could it be Trembley's fault.
Posted by: jim66 | August 26, 2009 12:30 AM
Pete--I did not know in the third inning that the Orioles would lose this game.
Is that because I grew up with the Baby Birds and celebrated the 1966 Orioles World Championship when I was 13-years old?
I've never relinquished my optimism. I see go things ahead.
I think there are young Orioles right now who expect to do great things.
I believe they will.
The Orioles--still growing now with a lot more to do--should have won this game tonight.
This game was not over in the third inning.

lf Crowley is such a great hitting coach, why do the zeros always choke with the bases loaded?? Hummmmm??
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Perhaps because a hitting coach is not a psychiatrist. The Orioles had 17 baserunners last night. That means the hitting coach did his job. He's paid to help them go to the plate and get on base. Those same players under that same instruction cannot hit in clutch situations, which is a function of their youth, inexperience and a variable no one can control -- the opposing pitchers understanding that the O's are not a good team and do not have anyone who forces them to pitch to the rank and file hitters. I suppose the hitting coach could have some impact on all that, but I don't think it's fair to single him out when they scored six runs and left nine runners on base.

A team that can never get a clutch hit is not very much fun to watch!

Fire Trembley!

Pete,
I enjoy your blogs and usually agree with you. I have been a die-hard Oriole fan for over 40 years and I am not going anywhere. After so many years of losing it is frustrating especially having grown up with the glory teams managed by the genius Earl Weaver.
I am not too down on DT because he does not have the talent to compete in the AL East. I do think there are times he makes moves I don't agree with. But what gets me is the dumb fundamental mistakes the team makes. Does Felix Pie even have a clue how to play this game? Getting thrown out at third base on a foul pop up is just stupid!
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Pie does not have good instincts, but I'd rather he make that mistake today than when the loss might actually be significant.
Posted by: Mike | August 26, 2009 8:28 AM
Since we are all being negative about this, I will add my two cents. Please get Luke Scott, the rally killer with poor base running early in the game, out of here I don't care how popular an Oriole he is. He is now something like 9 for 112 since the all-star break and he continues to play? Why? Why? Why? The Orioles missed the boat when there was interest in him at the trading deadline because he had a good first half and that about sums up this team that is full of players who pitch, hit, run the bases, about half the time.

All of you screaming from Trembley's head are clueless fair-weather fans. His job is to protect his young pitchers for next year and still give them experience. Do you really think any of the managers from any team in first place could have done better? Get real...it's rebuilding people, not buying the world series with a bunch of over-paid "roid-boys". Trembley is old school and I love that. I'd rather have a bunch of young guys with talent who play the game right even if they do lose than a bunch of high-priced names who only play hard 1/2 the time.....GIVE TREMBLEY AN EXTENSION NOW ANDY!

"I'd rather have a bunch of young guys with talent who play the game right even if they do lose than a bunch of high-priced names who only play hard 1/2 the time".
Are you referring to the Orioles? I would also like to see those who "play the game right", but I've rarely seen it this season.

Some entertainment for you Peter:
A Post Turtle
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.
Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President. The old rancher said, Well, ya know, Obama is a Post Turtle. Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'Post Turtle' was?
The old rancher said, When you are driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, well that is a Post Turtle.
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor s face so he continued to explain; "You know he didn t get up there by himself, he doesn t belong up there, he doesn t know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there in the first place"?
End of story.

I'm not saying that Trembley has not made his share of mistakes, but is he responsible for terrible baserunning, utter lack of clutch hitting, and multiple rookie starting pitcher along with a disappointing veteran?
How much different would this season be if Tex and AJ had signed? We need that big bat in the middle. As good a hitter as he is, I don't know that Markakis will ever hit for alot of power.
