Orioles: You figure it out

The Orioles had shot themselves in the foot so many times over the past two days, they didn't have any toes left. O's hitters had hit into five double plays in a span of six innings going into the third inning today, which isn't easy to do.

So, just when they look about as hopeless as they could possibly look, they bat around and score six times in the bottom of the third to make this a game again. The Red Sox have scored in every inning, so who knows what happens from here, but the Red Sox bench is thin and they're going to have to get into their bullpen early, too, so it really is anybody's ballgame.

There were a lot of key hits in the inning, but Adam Jones' opposite field double with the bases loaded to put the O's on the board for the first time after 14 straight innings of futility was huge. So was Aubrey Huff's double off the out-of-town scoreboard and, of course, Ty Wigginton's foul-pole homer to pull the Orioles to within a run.

The O's bullpen still faces the difficult task of holding things together for 7 2/3 innings, but at least the game is worth watching now.

Red sox were in control the whole time.

Nice tease, for a moment, but the truth is...the season was lost on Friday night. The team has gone south and they are not going to put forward any effort for this lame duck manager.

ALBERS FTL!

well peeter it looks like the o's bullpen is not up to it. they can't stop the bo sox in the 4th inning.

Pete it's time for dave t to get fired. They look like a circus out there. To many games left for them to play like this the rest of the year. There is player unrest and unless Andy handles this situation correctly this could really get out of hand.

i really don't want to see dave trembley get fired, but i have a feeling he will be let go. andy will still have a hard time convincing free agents to come to the o's this off season.

Trembley won't get fired. Everyone knows he is a lame duck keeping the seat warm for the next manager. Why fire him now? No great manager would want anything to do with this mess right now.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
