Orioles: Wake up call
Faster than you could say "Here we go again," the Orioles rebounded from the Angels' weird two-run rally in the first inning to bat around and score six times in the bottom of the first. And, believe if or not, they actually added a tack-on run in the third when Felix Pie launched a solo home run well into the right center field bleachers.
It was Pie's second hit of the game. He also had an RBI double in the six-run first. Not bad for a guy O's fans wanted to run out of town when he was batting .158 back in early May. Since May 10, he now is 25 for 81 (.309).
Ex-Oriole update: For those who thought Adam Eaton should no longer be in the major leagues, he currently is warming up in the bullpen for the Colorado Rockies at LandShark Stadium in Florida.

Some fans wanted to run him out of town.. not all of us

I never wanted to run him out of town, just out of everyday left field. He was tough to watch as a regular, and without options it made it tougher. But I like him in a reserve role, especially if he learns how to tun the bases a little better.
Of course Eaton is back, you know how weak pitching is, saw that he pitched the other night. The Rockies can have him. Question is, why didn't the Orioles send him down to the minors to work out his stuff and work out of the bullpen on his way back up?

Pete's reply: Because he would have clogged up the roster with no real upside.

Uh oh, Tillman's out. Here comes Albers. And there's a double and an RBI. Another IS. And another hit! Oy Vey!
I still believe Pie can be a useful ML player, maybe even a starter some day. He is only 24 and has yet to have regular extended playing time in the bigs. Maybe now that he is settled in, he could be that player, if given the chance.
Adam Eaton has made 26 million dollars in his ML career. His record is 70-68.
Hey, Pete, a buddy of mine in Chicago, who follows the Birds, says how about Reimold for Jake Fox? Fox is a man without a position, a perfect DH but unlimited power for the better fielder but not quite as powerful Reimold. And they need OF help on the Northside.
Whaddya think?

Pete's reply: I think the Orioles love Reimold, so that would be a tough sell.

I never wanted to run him out of town. I thought then (and now) that he hasn't been given enough chances at the MLB level to see if he can be successful or not.
I do commend him for continuing to play hard and play well despite very limited playing time. He's had only 81 AB in nearly three months? It's amazing he still knows where the batter's box is.

Pete,
Do I sense a convenient memory on your part regarding Felix Pie? The drumbeat continues to increase for the Orioles to pull the plug on the Felix Pie experiment, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Andy MacPhail said Pie would get at least a couple of months to see if he can settle into the starting lineup and become a productive and dependable player. MacPhail is a stubborn guy and he's probably going to let the thing play all the way out. In a weird sort of way, I like that about him.
Maybe it would have sounded better had you said many of US!
I sure didn't feel any love for Felix from the chief blogger!

Pete's reply: I was not a big critic of Pie or the Pie experiment, though he didn't do well as a starter. I was answering people who were asking if it would be cut short.

Just watched Andy's address to the multitude at Camden Yards today shrugging off the O's poor showing by pointing to the quality of young players on the team. Hey Dave, the four young starting pitchers on the roster are a result of the EXCEEDINGLY poor job that you did in acquiring quality pitchers in the off season. There were at least 30 free agent pitchers and I don't buy the argument that the O's couldn't have interested at least 3 or 4 by offering quality $$ for quality arms. I'm not talking about the top level pitchers but the ones below that would have been much more help than what the O's started the season with, along with Guthrie (Koji is proving to be a desparate public relations acquisition). Maybe Andy will go before Dave. Might be a better move.
