Orioles: Roberts rocks again...and again (updated)
Brian Roberts went deep in the third inning for his third home run in as many games. It wasn't as grand as his slam on Thursday at Tropicana Field, but it put the Orioles in front and kept Roberts on a major roll.
BRob has been hammering the ball for awhile now. He has hit in ten straight games, going 19-for-49 (.388) with eight doubles, four homers, seven runs and 11 RBI.
There are some posters who are wondering why he looks so inspired now, when he looked defeated a few weeks ago. It might be that he wasn't so much frustrated earlier in the season as banged up. He had a lingering bronchial infection for several weeks and has had a variety of bumps and bruises -- most recently that nasty foul tip off his shin two weeks ago.
If he was simply discouraged, his terrific performance the past two weeks makes little sense, since the situation is worse now than it was when so many people assumed that he was letting down because the O's were so far out of contention at midseason.
Instant update: Brian just did it again, launching his second homer of the game and fourth in the last three games to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Jeremy Guthrie has been terrific, but his pitch count is getting up there and Danys Baez is warming up in bullpen.

I dunno, Peter. I thought he was sort of loafing around the bases after he hit that ball into the seats in the 3rd. He's one of the best 2B in the world and might break the ML record for doubles but he's obviously the problem with this team.

Luke needs to get back on the roid program.

Okay the Luke Scott experiment is over. Lets move on and put in a rookie at first and if that doesn’t gel its free agent time.

Okay I am not joking now Roberts should bat cleanup.

Roberts is unconscious right now. Wow.

It looks like Roberts took Mr. Schmuck's challenge to heart.

id like to see mickolio in the 8th and JJ in the 9th, but mickolio threw 34 pitches yesterday, so I guess he wont pitch tonight.

Another one!

Pete
Perhaps you are correct.
But I see and hear a different man in Roberts.
Body language. His interviews.
The other night we lost late in game and Nrian stood looking out with a determined face, not pouty not running off.
He has grown up. He is leading by example in his all-around approach. Maybe he finally realizes nobody feels sorry for him. He has manned-up and I give him his due.

I really hate seeing Baez in any games at this point. He seems to always pitch to a loss and there's no way (I hope) he's on this team next season.

So nice to see Guthrie pitch a good game. Seven innings, one run is a sea change for him. And the Roberts story is cool, too. Hopefully Chris Ray can seal the deal.

Pete,
Isn't it interesting to see how this team looks when it's getting clutch hits and great starting pitching? Almost looks like a team out there.

Wow that was a mean stare down by Adam Jones. Lesson learned - don't try to take his fly balls.

Pete--It's all in the black jerseys. Next season, let's wear the black as the regular uniform, use the white and gray as specials.

guthrie really pitched a good game along with some good defense. don't know what is happening with b rob,but it sure looks good. can't get too excited yet, just maybe chris ray is working himself back to the form he had before his injury. i liked the interview that givins gave the other night with amber theo harris.he didn't use the words (you know).like many of the athletes use during a interview.

B-Rob is locked in right now. They did throw him cookies in the middle of plate, and he surely didn't miss.
Guthrie was pretty good to, but had to give up the home run so he can keep his lead in the Majors.
On the flip side of this. If B-Rob doesn't carrry the whole team on his shoulders tonight, we'd be talking about the horrible team base running, again, tonight.

Pete, on the postgame show, Amber interviewed Felix Pie, who appeared to be wearing a Melvin Mora jersey t-shirt...were my eyes deceiving me, do the O's often wear each other's shirts or is this just an anomally? I know it is kind of a stupid thing to wonder about, but it struck me as pretty funny.
And on a side note, I am vacationing in VA Beach, and drove up to see a Tides games the other night (they lost), but Waters looked quite good. I also got a chance to talk to Justin Turner, who had a 3-hit night...he seems like a great dude, and really impressed me and my dad and sister (who are both serious Yankee fans)...any chance he enters into the conversation for the Orioles future plans?
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I don't think he's that high on their list, but he's not going anywhere, I don't think.

Tim Kurkjian said on espn two nights ago: 'You just can't throw a fastball past Brian Roberts.' That's pretty high praise. The Granny Thurs night was unreal -- how much recoil he can get for a guy his size. Very Alomar-esque. And doesn't spit on umps.

Justin Turner should be brought up in Sept. to play third for the rest of the year. He's one of the few legit position players the o's have in thier system. And why in the world is Waring still at Frederick? If he was moved through the system this year he might be in the mix for 1st next year. He's a better prospect that Snyder,Aubrey and Hughues.

Brian Roberts has more home runs (5) in the last six games than Melvin Mora has all season (4).

Last night's game might be the beginning of Guthrie saving his O's job. If he follows up over the next six weeks he might stay to play next year. Otherwise he'll be included in a multi-player trade for a big bopper.
I complained a week+/- ago that the veterans players on the MASN staff haven't spoken out about the O's lack of playing basic baseball. i.e taking a strike, stealing, bunting, etc. etc. Finally, last night Palmer took the managing staff to task for, at least, the lack of stealing and bunting to level the playing field against good pitching and good power hitting by the opposing team. I got to thinking...with his status as a Hall of Famer, his tremendous knowledge of the game AND of the players of today, would he...could he...should he... be just the guy to replace Trembly? IF Trembly has to go there will be a lot of backlash, both from the fans who don't want the O's to take that step back and those who (perhaps justifyably) believe it's all the player's fault. Hiring an icon like Palmer would sooth the feelings of most fans and would really be a change from the practice of hiring little-known managers as has been the case ever since Hargrove was banished. For a couple million/year over, at least 5 years, I believe Palmer could be enticed to leave the comforts of home (in his several homes throughout the U.S.) to take over the task of bringing back the O's of old. He might even be excited about the challenge of it all, to change ten+ years of futility and enter into the exciting world of going nose to nose w/ the Red Sox and those hated guys in the big city. What a footnote to add to his legacy.
Come on, lets start a campaign to convince both Palmer and the O's front office that they need each other in order to bring back those glory days of Orioles baseball, from the mid-60's to the early 80's. What a ride that was! Palmer MIGHT even top Earl's record. That would really be an asterick for him.
GO O's!
