Orioles: Matusz time

The probability of Brian Matusz being called up next week has gone from possible to likely. Orioles beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec has just posted a story including a comment from Andy MacPhail conceding the definite possibility that Matusz will be the guy who will come up to take Brad Bergesen's place in the starting rotation. Take a look at Jeff's story here.

Depending on when Matusz would start, he could be scratched from his scheduled start for Bowie against New Britain tonight at 5 p.m. or pitch briefly to stay sharp for a possible Tuesday matchup against the Tigers.

This is a great chance to show the fans why they should keep coming or bail on the team

Wow, did not expect this one Pete. I'm excited to see him come up if he does. I just hope it is not too early but his numbers have been so good you cannot deny him. You hit it on the head last entry, for a last place team this team keeps it exciting. I say go for it, how about you Pete? Any concern over the move if it happens.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Of course, there's some. He's a young player, but not that young. Comes out of a college program. And I think it'll be a short audition, just to get his feet wet.

If he does get called up, I hope my concerns are in vain. If he is not ready to play in the MLs, then the worst thing that can happen is that he has a good start. In which case, the Os are maybe forced to keep him in the rotation and eventually overexpose him. He becomes the nest Loewen or Penn.

If he is ready and he hits the ground running, then all issues vanish.

This is great, Matusz probably has a ton of confidence right now. Even if he is only up for a start or two, it will be fun to see the kind of stuff he has.

Pete, I'm sure there's no need to ask, but can you give an update on what Matusz does tonight? (Gets scratched, only 2 innings..) Thanks.

Excellent. Even though it is only for a game or 2, it is deserved because he earned it. The worst that can happen is he finds out what he needs to work on the rest of the AA season. Matusz is the real deal and now hopefully a chance to prove it.

with the situation the orioles are in at this time they might as well bring him up. peter what about trying cla meredith at closer. what do they have to lose at juncture of the season.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Not much, but I think they need to see how Jim Johnson fares in the role, and I think he'll be great once he settles in.

This is happening faster than I'd expected. I like it. Gives me something to be interested in, given that the standings are a given.

Well, I wouldn't have done it, but that's why Andy makes the big bucks. If he thinks thats the right way to go, well, it won't be the first time I've disagreeed with him. So far I think he's been doing a great job, so what the hell.
Welcome Mr. Matusz! please prove that Andy was right and I wasn't.

Why does every rookie pitcher who is a starter have to be thrown into the rotation? Whatever happened to earning a start at the major league level by getting out major league hitters first? Palmer, Flanagan, Martinez.....

Welcome Tillman and Matusz. Added to Hernandez, Bergeson, Berken and Guthrie......... Now lets win some ball games. Let's see what our record is now between August 1st and the end of the season. This is a whole new BallGame !!!

Pete, I agree with you on JJ as closer. I expect him to do fine.

On Brian, you said you think this will be a "short audition." Do you really think that if he does very well in his first start they will then send him down? I personally would doubt that. Of course, if he struggles a bit it might be a different story.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, I really meant that he would not likely pitch all the way through September in his first professional season. There's a reason that the minor league season ends in early September. I would guess three or four starts.

Wow. That's all I can say right now. I can't even bring up the DCab, Penn or Loewen comparisons because this guy has much better make up then those three. I hope they know what they're doing...

Wooohooo! I hope he does well.

I am defiently excited that Matusz has a high chance to be called up. The kid has earned it and he has the stuff to be the future ace of our young pitching staff. I remember that some people say that Mr. Matusz is already ML ready when he was drafted. By the way, when/if Matusz is called up, he will probably stay in the rotation. It is not going to be a short audition. He is here to stay. Good luck, Brian. The future is here.(almost here) Imagine, 6 rookies in the rotation with the chance that Arritea might be called up next month. Matusz, Tillman, Arritea, Bergy, D.Hernandez, Berken. Go O's.

Pete he seems to be a very mature young man, who pitched in a good college program. I think it would be a great idea to have all these young guys come up at once. It would create sort of a competion among them and also create a bond that might carry on for many years to come.Nothing ventured nothing gained. All they have to do now is weed melvin out of the line up, sign huff to a contract extension to take the pressure off and help solidfy the line up for next year. Huff is good if not better then any alternative that the orioles would have. I say 3 years for 30,000,00 would do it.He still will knock in over 100 runs this year.

just curious, why matusz over arrietta? Is he hurt?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, not hurt, but he has struggled some lately.

Pete --

It's curious that their argument for not bringing up Wieters earlier (he only had one season in the minors, etc.) doesn't seem to apply to Matusz, who is overpowering the minors the way Wieters did as well.

This is exciting, but also doesn't it mean that Wieters, Matusz and Bergesen will all be eligible for arbitration/free agency the same time? Sounds like a whopping bill will come due in four or five years, but it will be exciting to see how they do.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yeah, I guess so, but free agency would be nearly 6 1/2 years from now.

was he scratched? yanked?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yanked after one inning.

Well, if this is any indication...Brian Matusz piched one inning before being taken out this evening...mmmmmmmmm. :-)

Since the organization has put Matusz on the fast track instead of working on developing his fastball & mechanics in the minors they might as well bring him up. He needs to see if his repertoire (some scouts say his fastball is his 4th best pitch) is going to fly against major leaguers.

At least statistically, Matusz was outdoing David Price's minor league performance last season (both being top pitchers from the previous year's draft) and his promotion turned out to be pivotal. Obviously, the O's aren't in a playoff run like the Ray of 2008, but he is definitely in a position to be successful and gain confidence for 2010 (and set himself to break camp with the team). The White Sox are reaping the benefits of Gordon Beckham, who was also a 2008 draftee, so we're not exactly making new rules. Let him pitch for a month and then shut him down before he logs too many innings.

As for the free agent deluge of 2015 that everyone is concerned about, let's hope that is something the O's have to worry about (it'd mean they were all successful and the O's are no longer the AL East's joke). Besides, if that's the case, I imagine there will be a lot more Markakis-like lockups ahead of that time.

Oh, and for trivial buffs out there, Mike Mussina made his major league debut on August 4th, 1991--18 years to the day before it looks like Matusz will make his. Mussina was also just over a year out of college. He never looked back. If the guy has his head screwed on right, it can work. Sir Sidney, DCab and Riley did not, so we can end the comparisons there.

This could be the second coming of Sandy Koufax.

With the Orioles lack of clutch hitching, he better be the second coming of Koufax, 'cause he's gonna have to have a 1.30 era to be successful on this team.

BTW - Guthrie should be sent down to work on his mechanics rather than padding all of the other teams home run stats.
