Orioles claim Tiger
The Orioles claimed Detroit Tigers minor league pitcher Chris Lambert off waivers today and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. Lambert is a 26-year-old right-hander with decent numbers the last two years in the International League. He was the St. Louis Cardinals' first-round draft choice (19th overall) in 2004.
Don't know much about the guy, but this obviously is one of those no-risk moves that Andy MacPhail likes to make once in awhile. The guy ranked fifth in the International League last year with a 3.50 ERA for Toledo. He was 6-7 with a 3.55 ERA for the Mud Hens this season and has made a handful of appearances at the major league level. He struggled in two appearances for the Tigers this year, giving up 11 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Maybe the Orioles hope to catch Jeremy Guthrie in a bottle again. They claimed Guthrie -- the 22nd overall pick in 2002 -- off waivers in 2007 from the Indians and he pitched quite well during his first season in Baltimore. He also won 10 games with a decent ERA (3.63) last year, but has struggled mightily this season.
Lambert has decent ratios and gives the Orioles a little more minor league inventory going into spring training next year, but he obviously didn't impress the Tigers enough to hold his place in that organization. In that regard, the move is reminiscent of the O's picking up Red Sox prospect David Pauley after he went 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA for Triple-A Pawtucket last year.

might as well just claim anyone worth a look since we're in last and will get our choice of anyone who comes onto waivers.....sign a bunch of cheap guys and maybe one sticks......we got nothing to lose with this right Peter?

Pete's reply: Only if it prevents the O's from spending money on better options.

Looks like this guy's been waived more than a flag on the 4th of July. But with those major league numbers, he's definitely rotation material.

Peter, just a mechanics question here. Are you obligated to publish every comment you get, as long as it's not obscene? Seems like a lot of the gibberish could be eliminated.
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Good question. No, I can delete anything I want, but don't like to censor comments, even the goofy ones.
Posted by: Julie | August 20, 2009 3:31 PM
Your likening of this to the Pauley move a year ago is perfecty apt, Pete. Pauley's a guy (like Chris Waters in 2009) who hasn't impressed enough for a call-up even as Jason Berken struggles and begs to be taken out of rotation. I know, I know, once Bergesen comes back healthy (soon!!), then Berken goes down.

More to the point, there is never anything wrong with increasing the inventory of pitchers in the minors. No one is saying this guy will end up in the rotation but it certainly doesn't hurt.

There are a lot of angry bloggers on this site. Most are legitimate long term Oriole Fans who are tired of losing.
Let's have a look at the pogress the orioles have made in recent years to see if we can figure out why they are so pissed...
Year Losses
1998 83
1999 84
2000 88
2001 98
2002 95
2003 91
2004 84
2005 88
2006 90
2007 92
2008 93
2009 100?
Average 90 losses per year
And now these loyal fans have been promised a 5 year rebuilding program that shoul bring the team a winning record by 2012.
The only race the Orioles are in this year is to see if they can beat the Nats and the Parrots to the exclusive 100 loss club. Next year looks just as bleak.
Yes, I see the young talent in waiting, but potential is potential until it is realized. The old saying that we have no way to go but up does not yet apply to the Orioles, who are still descending.
I think Macphail is doing all the right things and as a long time corporate season ticket holder I have too much invested to give up now. But I understand the frustration and The owner of this team needs to show over the winter that he cares about the long suffering fans and go out, spend the money and acquire some legitimate free agent talent to add some respectability to the team.

Tough crowd here today!
Peter,
Whats the chances we grab Jamie Moyer for a one year deal to see how he works out? I read today he wants out of Philly cause the Pedro episode and the guy can still eat innings. What do you think?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Doubt it. It's the opposite of what the O's are trying to do.

LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT!!!!!
Posted by: jose feliciano | August 20, 2009 4:39 PM
John in Manassas - Jamie is eligible for the senior tour next year so that won't happen.
But seriously, the young guys will be able to eat innings next year once they are conditioned for a major league season and also once they learn to throw a major league fastball (ie movement on it).
And besides, 15 years ago when Jamie was here, he wasn't exactly lights out. (unless of course you were turning in early) :)
Posted by: Bob F. | August 20, 2009 4:45 PM
what about that guy mitchell from the article a few weeks back? why do the o's refuse to give him a shot? he has been mulling in the minors for years.. he cannot be any worse that what we have, bass for example.. give him a shot!!
Posted by: Oriolesfan21218 | August 20, 2009 4:47 PM
Wow, I see Garrett Olson allowed 19 Hrs in only 75 IP before being sent down. This guy was clearly Orioles material! How could they let him go??
As for the 'no-risk' move, I think I'm ready to see a few RISKY moves this offseason. MacPhail needs to be a bit more aggressive for a change and do something to help the team in the PRESENT.
P.S. FIRE TREMBLEY! (but not until after the season)

You do have a point LOL! Still if he is going to be cheap and wouldn’t mind coming here I think he could work in the pen or a starter just in case something happens.
He probably wants an NL East team to get revenge on the Phils

Mr. Worf, Fire (Trembley)!
Posted by: Dibs | August 20, 2009 4:55 PM
The whole Guthrie episode brings me to my favorite question of the last week or so. Is anyone working to figure out just what allowed Guthrie to pitch effectively with Zaun behind the plate, and get killed when Weiters is? Apparently all those in the know say that Weiters is learning to call games very well for a rookie, so what's the scoop?
I mean this shouldn't be rocket science. They have video of every pitch the guy has thrown. Can't Kranitz other members of the coaching staff figure this out?
Posted by: Roy | August 20, 2009 4:58 PM
Roy - It was Zaun's funky motorcyle helmet catcher's mask. Provided a better target. :)
He actually got killed early in the year when Moeller caught him too. I think Guthrie just trusted Zaun's pitch calling more than either Moeller or Weieters. Don't think there is anything more to it than that. He better learn to trust someone or he's going to be on the waiver wire.

20AUG2009 Lineup
Brian Roberts - 2B
Cesar Izturis - SS
Luke Scott - DH
Nick Markakis - RF
Nolan Reimold - LF
Michael Aubrey - 1B
Ty Wigginton - 3B
Chad Moeller - C
Felix Pie - CF

Pete,
With all the kiddies the O's need some vets! And he just won a WS... Even to bring him in as a pen guy I think would be good for the youngsters.
Posted by: John in Manassas | August 20, 2009 5:10 PM
Trembley must have hit the sauce a little early today.
I can't believe anyone would put this lineup together while sober.
Posted by: Chuck in Hawaii | August 20, 2009 5:10 PM
Are you kidding? That 4-12 record was a blessing in disguise. Now we are under the radar, no one giving us a shot. If Jones and Trufant injuries are not too severe, and if the Seahawks as a team avoid the plethora of injuries they suffered last year we should be good. Hey, here is to Denver having a horrid season as we get their number one pick! Woop hoo!

Posted by: BIRDMAN | August 20, 2009 5:21 PM
Out of curiosity , I looked up Adam Jones numbers against James Shields: 15 AB 6H, 4 doubles. That's a .400 avg.
But Dave T has this weird fetish for playing all the bench guys at the same time and guaranteeing a loss.
Posted by: Chuck in Hawaii | August 20, 2009 5:26 PM
This is a silly bunch today! It's a wonder we O's fans have any sense of humor after twelve years of failed promises. The move toward youth is good, but as I have said many times before, we need a couple "fiery" bats in the lineup. Experience to go along with youth. Palmer made reference to this a few nights ago. Way to go, Jimbo!

Dear Multiple Famous-People,
People think I'm nutz?
Here's one, the Birds have been on a downhill slide since Davey Johnson was fired.
Nothing seems to have worked. Neither signing free agents, bringing in new managers, nor taking a flyer off the wire--maybe it's time to release the franchise and start from scratch.
I guess that's the 800 pound gorilla.
Posted by: Anonymous | August 20, 2009 5:53 PM
I was thinking of Moyer too if they were going to try and go the cheap re-tread veteran mentor route. He's been here before, he's won and he's just a gamer.
I'd much rather see a legit top end guy come in here, but I'm just hedging my hopes.
As for the lineup, didn't we lose with Jones et al playing last night? Mix it up, see if something happens. You only don't try to fix it if it ain't broke.

chuck, i totally agree with you. after a night where no one really hit well, trembley sits wieters who went 2-3 and sits jones with a .400 against james shields. another guarenteed loss for the o's. thanks a lot trembley.

Hey Dave,
Did they not show the games after Pie hit for the cycle up in Buffalo?
0-3
0-1
0-2
I'm not sure how anyone going 2-3 guarantees any result the next night.
Posted by: James C | August 20, 2009 7:10 PM
Pete -
I agree with the others, this lineup is horrible.
Unless Jones or Wieters is hurt, play them.
Why does Dave continue to flip-flop 3rd-4th-5th? Luke Scott 3rd? He's a pure #5 batter - give him the #4 with Huff gone, I get that, but otherwise #5 maybe even 6th).
Can you tell us why Trembley is constantly resting players/rotating in other players when most other ballclubs are playing their starters with frequency?
I have said this before and will say it again - Trembley's skillset appears best suited for AAA and not the majors. Unless he and Andy are just auditioning, and if they are, I wish they'd just tell us so we can focus on the Ravens full-time.
Posted by: PeteyPablo | August 20, 2009 7:54 PM
People climbing on "Anonymous" just don't get it. Any poster who leaves a repetitive negative like "Fire Trembley" after every blog entry misses the fact that there are actually web-sites devoted to the removal of a particular coach or manager.
There have been sites for the firing of almost every coach in sports. Wasn't there a "Fire Paterno" web-site a few years ago? Another for Bobby Bowden at Florida State? I seem to recall a "Fire Girardi" site last year when the Yankees were struggling early.
This "Anonymous" poster is just another in a long line of internet commenters who likes to stir the kettle.
Really, it's one post, one consistent message. It's easy to ignore if you so desire. Reacting to it just feeds the continuation of the message. Leave him or her alone.....he/she probably won't go away, but will certainly not cease and desist if there is a reaction.
By the way, firing Dave Trembley isn't going to change anything this year. And he isn't going to be fired, simple as that. He may be replaced during the off-season, but it just ain't happening now. What's the point?
Posted by: Chris | August 20, 2009 8:02 PM
Chris -
I'm pretty sure most realize Trembley will not be fired this year, and I don't think Trembley warrants enough public focus to have bloggers influence Andy's decisions.
Personally, I'd like to see a whole new coaching staff next year. Baserunning, lineups, miscues, vocal leaders, and just not seeing good managing. Ex: we call up Chad Moeller who was hitting poorly in AAA, and tonight he's starting instead of our #1 prospect that we were told had to get playing time this year to learn the big leagues. After going 2-3 last night, Wieters sits. Nothing against Moeller, but why has he started 3 of the last 9 games? Is Wieters hurt? Remember Trembley saying earlier this year that when Matt got promoted, it wasn't to sit on the bench?
It's these types of decisions that have many of us leaning towards a new manager.
Posted by: PeteyPablo | August 20, 2009 8:22 PM
PeteyPablo.......
You are totally spot-on with the Chad Moeller insight. After he struck out with runners on 1st and 3rd, I almost screamed at the TV screen why he's at the plate in that situation.
Thank God for Brian Roberts just blasting a grand-slam.

Pete- What do you think of picking up Chone Figgins for 3B next year? He's a free agent.
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'd drive to California and pick him up myself. I'm sure the O's will take a look if he's still out there, but I think the Angels will keep him.
Posted by: Earl Battey | August 21, 2009 1:19 AM
No way the Angels let Figgins get away. He makes them go. They will re-sign him. Besides - we need a big bopper. If we don't begin next season with legit 30+HR potential @ 1st or 3rd base, with Luke Scott back to DH, we still cannot truly compete in the AL east.
