Orioles: Berken battered

Every time I watch Jason Berken pitch, I can see how the Orioles keep thinking his luck is going to change and he's going to string together a couple of wins. He looked good early and still got dinged for a run on three infield hits in the second inning, then gave up three homers in the middle innings to seal his usual fate. Mix in the Orioles' typical lack of run support while he's on the mound and it all adds up to a 2-10 record that soon figures to be 2-11.

No great injustice. He gave up 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. You're not going to win a lot of games doing that.

Maybe the Orioles know enough about Berken's makeup to be confident that his psyche isn't being damaged by the mounting defeats, but you've got to feel for the guy. He won his first major league start when he was called up, but his brief major league career has been a nightmare ever since.

Two words that will help Berken. LONG RELIEF. Stop starting him now and let him pitch in games out of the bullpen, when the game is not going to be lost by him.

Pete's reply: Can't disagree with you on this. I think hitters catch up with him after seeing him a couple of times.

side topic, am I the only one that thinks the guy in the Southwest commercial driving the luggage around looks like Melvin Mora?

main topic- Long relief is needed for Berken, give Waters or Arrieta or someone else a shot to start.

If Berken earned a spot in the rotation by having a 1+ ERA in triple A, he de-earned it by have a +6.00 in the bigs.

Melvin Mora going 0-4 and leaving 6 runners on base didn't help him either. Getting him a few more runs would probably make pitching easier for him.

Jason Broken actually looked pretty decent seeing he’s at best a relief pitcher. Funny though seeing Zaun and Cormier.

Berken is only the symptom, not the problem. Counting Simon (2), Eaton (8), Hendrickson (7), Hill (13) and Berken (16), the Orioles have amazingly started 46 games, 39% of their total, with pitchers whose ERA is over 6.00! (Recall that Hendrickson's was 6.35 before he was moved to the bullpen.) It is a fallacy to lump together all ERAs above 4 together. The run differential between a 6.00 ERA and an "average" 4.00 ERA is the same as between the 4.00 ERA and a Cy Young candidate with a 2.00 ERA. No team can hope to be respectable with that high a proportion of completely ineffective starters. I don't know how much of the blame goes to each of McPhail, Trembley, and Kranitz, but it is overdue for the team to spend some of the money they keep saving by dumping veterans so as to upgrade the starting pitching in addition to adding power to the lineup.

again, O's couldn't get a ball to the OF with less than 2 outs and a runner on 3rd.

The red sox do stuff like that. Winners get the job done

Peter,
Not to knock the Crow because I'm a fan of his and any connection to a time when the Orioles were great but does it seem that his style of coaching is more built to produce a contact hitter and less to produce a power hitter?

Did Roberts really just strike out looking at 3 pitches in a row?? Really??

Hey Aubrey got a hit!

I don’t get why people hate Mora so much. The guy is a better all around player than Wiggy. Each time I see Wiggy I just want to puke. Mora haters I don’t care if you insult him on here but be sure to mix in some Wig insults as well because he sucks just as bad if not worse.

i think Mora is a great fielder, cant hit anymore, needed a fly ball to get a run in an struck out on a pitch in his eyes.

i really do think he looks like the guy in the SW commercial!

I wonder who on the O's is concerned about the fans' collective psyche. I feel for them too.

RE Cyril's comments: Eaton, Simon, Hendrikson, Hill and Koji were the sum total of Andy's offseason efforts to produce a starting staff to go with Guthrie. Quite a resume wouldn't you say. He probably could have done better throwing a dart at a copy of the free agent list.

I agree with the comments about Wiggy. If you're going to have a beer gut, you better be the guy that hits 40 home runs a year.

It's a amazing how athletic teams like the Angels and the Rays are. They do the little things it takes to win, like running down every ball and getting infield hits, diving to first Pete Rose style, hustle all around. If you don't have power, you have to play small ball. The O's don't do either.

Besides Brob and Pie, is there anyone who can run on this team? Mora, Wigginton, Wieters, Reimold, Scott can't run to save their lifes. Cakes and Jones are average runners.

Point blank, Berken needs to go to the bullpen, or the minors. The kid is just not ready. If the Os don't do anything or enough in the offseason, groundhog day at Camden Yards will be for years to come.

When are we going to stop punishing this guy?
